Opinions de The Sentinel San Francisco
My new favorite lunch spot. The phenomenal sandwiches are on par with their wonderful staff. I’m working on trying each and every sandwich. I’ve got four down, and each one is better than the one it precedes. Thanks so much for creating such an awesome spot to recharge.
This place is a gem. A true FiDi institution. My go-to spot for a morning muffin and coffee for 25 years! Sandwich’s are great too. This place IS San Francisco. IYKYK
I've gotten the spicy chicken salad here before, but never has it been as good as it was today. RARELY do I order a salad, and even more rare, one without bacon in it, but this salad is LIFE CHANGING. Delectably spiced chicken! Leafy greens! MANGOES!!!!!! It was literally the first time I ever finished an entire salad, I didn't even know it was possible. Pro tip: Order ahead on the phone and then grab people's butts as you push ahead of them to the front of the super long line to pick up your food! The death stares you would have gotten as you cut the line will easily be replaced with sexual confusion, which could even lead to an after work date!
The Sentinel is a great sandwich spot in SoMA, very close to the financial district. The line can be long at peak lunch hours, but it moves relatively fast. You'll definitely be in and out in under 15 minutes. The big differentiator here is the bread. The bread is baked fresh every single day, and it's delicious. My favorite sandwiches are the trout with fennel and apple, the corned beef (which is basically a Reuben), and the roast beef, which is served extremely rare. The agua fresca is usually pretty tasty, and the women who work here are always super friendly. I'm a fan of service with a smile.
Highly recommend this place for sandwich connoisseurs. They have a very simple menu that gives you some great options to choose from. The line moves fast so don't worry about waiting too long. If you're a Subway kind of person, this not for you.
I took a coffe and an breakfast sandwich before my BaRT to the aiport. It was 10$ great combo nice price and awesome sandwich. Nice fresh crumble bread pesto sauce turkey and egg.
Love their sandos. The bread is the best. Usually go for the roast beef unless I opt for a special. They're always delicious and they have the best pickles.
Really good sandwiches! Try to go a little early or late at lunch time to beat the line, although it does move quickly. I hear they have good breakfast too.
always surprised by how quickly the line moves. The corned beef is one of my favorite sandwiches in the city. I work blocks away and enjoy making the trek for a good sandwich
Just had a delish fried chicken sandwich with habanero mayo. Delightful!
The Corned Beef Sandwich is absolutely delicious. Give The Sentinel a quick call before you go, so you don't have to wait in the line and get your sandwich ready!
Best sandwich I’ve had in SF! I’m coming back to try everything on the menu. I love sandwiches, and the best ingredient in a great sandwich is the bread. This spot has bread to die for. The spicy pork loin was glorious. They even threw in a loaf of cinnamon bread as well as a chocolate mint 👌🏼Chef’s kiss
A corner for a flavor and good Aroma! I ordered a beef sandwich here at this location and the service quality and the people that work here are very incredible, I couldn’t ask for more this actually got me very excited and the sandwich was extremely delicious highly recommended to all of your people that want something fast and cheap at the same time!
Favorite sandwich place in the city. Pictured is the mortadella mozzarella pumpkin pesto. It was very amazing. Usually I get the roast beef. It has these pickled red onions and horseradish creamcheese. I want one now. But next ime I'm getting the corn beef, it looks like it's on foccacia, with swiss cheese and Russian dressing. ALSO awesome thin pickles you can grab and eat with your sandwich. I'm very impressed with the pickles.
Wow! They put the Deli in DELI-CIOUS! I finally decided to stop by at this wonderful place after passing by it so many times and smelling the enticing food that just tingles the taste bud senses. No regrets! I order the corn beef sandwich and paired it with a watermelon-lemonade drink (I believe it was called watermade or something like that). The drink itself had fresh watermelon juice and lemon juice. Simple, yet refreshing on a warm day. As for the sandwich itself it comes out fast! Like Jimmy John's can't touch them fast (could be pre-made, but you won't know the difference). The bread was perfectly toasted and the Russian dressing added a good tang to it. The swiss cheese was melted perfectly and the corn beef was tender and flavorful. Kind of like a cuban sandwich. Or as Raj said in Big Bang theory, "Sweety and meaty!" They also provide a slice of pickle and to top it off an Andes mint chocolate! Price: $15 ish for Sandwich and drink.
delicous, laaaarge, homemade, and affordable blueberry muffin! no frills, great place

Great food ready in minutes! Be prepared to stand in line and wait for your meal on the sidewalk, there is no "storefront" to this place! Super convenient for a quick lunch stop. The reuben corned beef sandwich is delicious, served on a buttery bread and very cheesy! The sausage and polenta stew is delicious when it's served, but isn't always on the menu.
Love this cozy streetside shop. Reminds me of NYC. Get a hefty and tasty breakfast sandwich on focaccia for a hefty price but well worth it. Blueberry muffins are bomb. Wish there were drinks besides coffee but there is a shop just down the street where you can get some Martinelli’s. Bada bing bada boom.
Five stars! I'm in love with the barbecue short rib sandwich. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, and the sauce was perfection. I'm officially obsessed! Plus, the service was fantastic. Highly recommend this sandwich shop to anyone looking for a delicious lunch.
I come here for breakfast at least once a week. I love the muffins! I know everyone loves the classic blueberry, but my favorite is the strawberry muffin. Their muffins are about the size of a softball, so if you want you can easily share with someone (but who wants to do that!). They are nice and crunchy on top (no streusel toppings here) and super moist and full of fruit on the inside. I haven't been here for lunch yet, but I've heard nothing but praise for their lunch specials.
This place has always had steep competition with working girls and now the bird, but it is unique among them with the simple artistic elegance of its sandwiches. The simple descriptions bely deep thought on ingredients combinations. The turkey for instance is sandwiched between a spicy chipotle mayo and a sweet and tangy cranberry jam and everything in between is designed to make you go from craving the spicy of the mayo to the sweet relief of the jam. The roast beef by contrast has nothing unusual, but it is designed to cater to lovers of roast beef with its piles of delicious rare meat being emphasized above all else. The fermented pickles they serve on the side come with slivers of fresh dill that flavored them, they aren't too salty or vinegary.
I'm a humongous fan of this place. It's not far from work and their sandwiches are HUGE! I only eat a half at a time, so I get two lunches out of it. Everything on their menu is awesome. The rare roast beef is my favorite, with the corned beef being a close second. I've tried the spicy pork (not spicy, but still tasty), the coppa, and the cauliflower curry. I recommend going with a few people and then splitting a bunch of different sandwiches.

Corned beef hash sandwich was OFF THE HOOK! I loved every minute of it along with a crunchy pickle. We came around 12:45pm and the line went by quick. Beware if you are planning on paying with a card, there was a $10 or $12 minimum. Sandwiches were around $9.
inexpensive gourmet sandwiches made right as you order them.. we love trying out the daily special. not fancy, but delicious. right in the financial district, so it's good for a quick lunch.
I enjoyed the corned beef sandwich as this shop. It's one of about 10 sandwiches on the menu and is very different than what you might find in NYC. No rye bread, mustard or mayo. But it comes with a delightful mix of cabbage and Russian dressing.
The Sentinel is always busy during the work week because it offers some great items and at a rapid pace. My favorite thing about the Sentinel is the Americanos. The coffee is delicious--not too bitter--and they come steaming hot. I haven't had much of their food but what I have had is delicious. I would highly recommend their pastries as they are large and very sweet.
Line was about 10 deep, but moved very quickly. They have a pretty efficient system of order taking. Waited no more than 10 minutes, including the line to order. Sandwiches are filling and usually offer up something different from the usual flavor.
Tiny counter to order sandos packed with big tastes! Menu is a regular rotation with only a few (4-6) options to pick from daily. Order from the counter and after pickup make your way over to Crocker Galleria to the public rooftop terrace to eat your lunch. The corn beef hash sandwich is addictive. You've been warned.
Excellent place to order to go sandwiches. I often order large orders when I have to feed many people, not only the cost of the food is more than fair but also the sandwiches are flavorful and tasty.
Just tried it for the first time - very delicious and very quick. Would've given it 5 stars if the pricing was a bit less, but i guess that's standard in FiDi. Lamb and eggplant sandwich was perfect.
A good sandwich place. The Reuben isn't too shabby and the cookies are always on point. The staff is friendly and efficient. Keep in mind there is nowhere to sit here so you have to get it to go.
Tried the lamb and eggplant sandwich; it costs $16 and it tastes strange (I.e. not good). Heard good things about the short rib and roasted beef sandwich. Will try next time.
Looks like a a tall , green , corn chip dipped into a red salsa sauce. It does not have the grace of Flatiron in NY; and hence it relies on reputation of hosting a restaurant, Cafe Zoetrope, frequented by the great film director Coppola ; it’s a building that lives on the fame of another person. It’s a side show but at least it’s not an eye sore.

Finally got around to trying this place, after sitting in my bookmarks for some two+ years. Hey, like I said, sandwiches aren't something I really seek out anymore. But, coming about a quarter after noon, I was surprised to find that the line was only about five people long, and that it moved very, very quickly. A few minutes later, I head out with my spicy pork on wheat sandwich, which was, overall, pretty solid: good flavors, a bit (just a bit) of kick, and filling, with half the sandwich enough to tide me over until dinner. That said, they're definitely on the pricier side, all around the $10 mark. So, imagine how bummed I was when I woke up the next morning, having blacked out the night before, to find that I had left the other half of the sandwich in the microwave and passed out before I had a chance to eat it :( ***Accessibility Info*** Venue - A small shop on the corner, without any noticeable seating. You wait in line on the sidewalk, go up to the counter to order, and walk out with your sandwich. Plenty of space inside the shop, so no real accessibility issues here. Bathroom - Give the aforementioned, I'm not entirely sure they even had a public one.
This tiny sandwich spot always intrigued me when I walk to my gym right around the corner and very attempting too for the long line that goes around the block during lunch hour. Today I finally had the time to step in to see what is all the wait is about. To my disappointment, their famous pastrami sandwich was already sold out at 2PM.... So, I went for their Vietnamese BBQ Pork Sandwich. It costs me $10.50. The end result you might ask? It was surprisingly good! Does it taste authentic? It doesn't. Still, it is a good sandwich on a dark kaiser roll lightly toasted with nice dressing and damn good BBQ pulled pork. It was also a satisfying portion. I saved half for another day. I am excited to return to try their signature sandwich another time, hoping it will not run out!
First time coming to this place! You might think twice about this place when you see the line outside this small sandwich shop but you don't have to wait in line that much. I ordered the corn beef sandwich because i read that it's their best, gotta say it is! They serve it on this focaccia type of bread except this kind tastes like it just came out of the oven soft & warm! They do put enough meat as well as cabbage, what i really liked was the sauce its a bit sweet. I didn't give this place 5 stars because i thought the price is a little bit too much but it is in the heart of the financial district so can't complain. They really should change the price online for this sandwich because it said $10 but when i showed up at the place the price was $13.
This place is a whole in the wall with fast, friendly service. I always try to order the roast beef sandwich when I can. It is very rare, just how I like it. The only issue I have with this place is they almost always run out of chips. Other than that, they do include a chocolate mint, and pickle with each order which they seem to never run out of. Also, although there's always a line at lunch time, the line goes really fast.
I prefer to stop by here in the morning now, and it's all because of their muffins. Just the right amount of fluffiness and not dry at all. The fruit to muffin ratio is just right - not too much fruit nor too doughy. The sour cherry muffin is my favorite since it is sweet and sour and goes well with a flavored coffee. I have also tried the strawberry, blueberry, peach, and tart apple - all are good really. Note for lunch, it is all about the corned beef sandwich. The version with gruyere is so much better so ask for it. Strictly a to-go spot since there are no seating. It is like a kiosk, and I wish there were seats because I don't like bringing soggy sandwiches back to the office.

They don't have much of a breakfast selection. It's basically just oatmeal and a muffin. That being said the oatmeal and muffin were good. It's just one lady behind a counter and she was pleasant. I know it's different at lunch and I recall having a great sandwich there before. I will have to go back and get a sandwich later and rethink my review. Pretty sure my sandwich will bring it up another star.
The coffee cake is really good here. For lunch they always offer a few regular options as well as rotate a couple things daily. A lot of people like getting the corned beef but I find it to be way too rich. I enjoy the lamb and eggplant sandwich. I also like the BALT (basil, avocado, lettuce, tomato) with goat cheese. They often run out of their popular items so try to go early. There's also no seating so plan to take it to go.
I dunno, man. People rave about the Sentinel, but maybe I've just had way better sandwiches? The sandwiches I've gotten here have not blown me away in the slightest. They always feel like they're lacking something. This coupled with all the hype makes me wonder what's going on here. I've been twice now, thinking maybe I misordered the first time. Both my boss and I agreed the sandwiches weren't "all that". Perhaps I'm the minority, and I've been spoiled by the sandwich gods or something. I don't know. I will say that the ordering system is extremely efficient.
Got a spicy pork sandwich for $16 and was a bit disappointed. Didn't enjoy the bread that much and it had more carrots than meat.
I have yet to go here for breakfast but lunch is pretty good. Their menu changes daily and can vary quite a bit. I've always had great luck with their sandwiches. The cookies are fresh and delicious. I ordered a "steak salad" which was really just steak mixed in with rice on one layer of spinach leaves. Not at all what I was expecting. I'll stick with the sandwiches from now. The line can be long if you show up at the lunch hour peak and it is takeout only.
Maybe I'm just not a sandwich person, but I think this place is overrated. I mean, it's good, but not heavenly amazing - I can live without trying this place. The prices can be steep for a sandwich, but the portions are ginormous! I ended up only finishing half my sandwich. I ordered the Corned Beef & Cabbage Sandwich since I heard good things about it. I really enjoyed the bread, but the sandwich could definitely use more corned beef and less cabbage. I feel like I was just eating a cabbage sandwich instead of a corned beef sandwich. The cheeses went well with the sandwich, but it wasn't anything spectacular. It's just a regular sandwich to me... and I prefer those from Safeway actually...

I placed an online order at 1:30, and got there at 1:58 to pick it up. Doors were closed, and after knocking for 5 minutes, they said they were closed. Google Maps says they close at 2:30. Phone number on Ritual went to someone else. OTOH, sad to see that they got broken into recently 😥.
The worst egg salad sandwich I have ever eaten. Super soft bread was smeared with unnecessary mayonnaise which caused the whole thing to fall apart. The egg salad had a thin, soupy consistency and no seasoning. I've had a better sandwich in a high school cafeteria.
