Opinions de Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant San Francisco
This is a hidden gem in San Francisco. The best service and the really really good food and super clean. Not one crumb on the floor. Even the pictures don't have dust on it. This is a safe haven if you're looking for a place to eat. We even bought our son Tommy and they gave him the best customer service you can possibly get from a place
Family owned since 1969 and the family continues to serve great food and famous from scratch margaritas. If your in the area , stop by and enjoy the vast variety of tequila that you won't find anywhere else. And have yourself a delicious meal from the Yucatan part of Mexico.
San Francisco’s Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant is a must-visit destination for tequila enthusiasts. This family-owned establishment is renowned globally for its extensive selection of 100% agave tequila and the iconic “Tommy’s Margarita,” crafted by Julio Bermejo, the owner and a tequila connoisseur. Tommy’s offers a unique experience for those seeking to explore tequila, providing tastings and educational opportunities alongside traditional Mexican and Yucatecan cuisine in a lively and welcoming atmosphere. One of my closest friends, Gary, introduced me to this exceptional establishment, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. The margaritas are exceptional, and the Camarones Al Mojo De Ajo is the best I have ever tasted. Pork Chops “Chuletas” and cheese quesadillas are also outstanding. During my visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Julio, the owner. He is an exceptional individual, highly attentive, friendly, and exceptionally kind. To ensure a pleasant experience, it is advisable to arrive early to secure a spot at the bar and engage in conversations with Julio. I assure you that you will not be disappointed.
Tommy's Mexican Restaurant holds a special place in my heart, and I'd like to share a brief story about it. When I moved to San Francisco around 30 years ago, a dear friend and colleague (who has since passed away) invited me to an after-work gathering for one of Tommy’s famous tequila-tasting classes. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet my new coworkers and connect with people outside the office. Over the years, I returned many times. However, as life changed and jobs shifted, I found myself away for nearly twenty years until yesterday. Being in the neighborhood reminded me of my late friend, and I decided to drop in for a bite and a drink in her memory. I sat at the bar, where the “good stuff” (read: tequila) is on display. The current owner, Julio Bermejo, happened to be there, and we chatted for a few minutes. He shared that this year marks the restaurant’s 60th anniversary and mentioned how patron habits have evolved; younger folks don’t go out for drinks as they once did. Although bar traffic has decreased compared to the past, the restaurant is still thriving, and, yes, they continue to offer their tequila classes. That’s what makes Tommy’s special: it’s not just a restaurant; it’s a piece of San Francisco history. Tommy’s was founded in 1965 by Tomas (“Tommy”) and Elmy Bermejo, who gradually introduced authentic dishes from their native Yucatán. This focus on Yucatecan cuisine sets Tommy’s apart. While they offer all the classic Mexican dishes, the real highlights are regional specialties like their famous Chile Rellenos, Poc Chuc, and Pollo Pibil. It’s comfort food perfected over decades. Then came their son, Julio, who transformed the bar scene. A tequila expert, he decided early on to use only 100% agave tequila (their liquor license dates back to 1976). He created the now-famous “Tommy’s Margarita,” which replaces triple sec with pure agave nectar. It’s simple, clean, and so delicious that bartenders around the world replicate it today. What started as a small family spot serving home-style recipes has become known as the “epicenter of tequila in the United States.” Despite its fame, it still feels like a neighborhood establishment run by a family eager to welcome you and share great food along with some of the best tequila you'll ever taste. If you get the chance, stop by before the end of the year and raise a margarita or a tequila shot to celebrate their 60th anniversary.
Been going here since I was a kid. Always ordered the same thing. 2 beef enchiladas and a margarita (one of those more recently). Best margaritas I've ever had and even lovelier folks. Serves some of the best tequila as well. I highly suggest going here if not for the food then the atmosphere and drink. I will admit, I am highly biased on this one. Love ya Julio, say hi to the folks for me
This place is as good as it gets for Mexican food in the Bay Area...what an incredible staff! So friendly, bar staff was knowledgeable, and restaurant is family run. The food was terrific and the margaritas are the best in San Francisco. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone looking for some good margaritas and authentic Mexican food.
No food. Just some damn good margs and service. Be warned - I love, and can handle spicy food and, when avail, spicy margaritas. They brew/batch their own habanero liquor for these. I asked for a 5 (scale of 10 w 1 being the hottest). Great bartender raised an eyebrow and backed me off to a 7 and it was intestine tingling hot. Fresh squeezed limes for your drink as you order. A tequila lovers paradise. Great vibes.
Yesterday I went to Tommy’s with my family, after having heard about it on tik tok. I had been looking forward to trying real Mexican food and i was truly shocked by how good it was. The food was amazing and especially the guacamole was out of this world. We tried the famous Tommy’s margarita and even though I’m not one for tequila drinks, I loved it. The service and staff were also top tier. If I’m in San Francisco again I will with no doubt go back and until then I will recommend to everyone I can. I also love that it’s family owned and has that cozy and authentic feel.
I've probably eaten at Tommy's around 40 times (wild guess) since my first time in 1992. When I lived a couple blocks away, it was convenient and today I still enjoy dinner here whenever I'm in the neighborhood. Tommy's is such a homey, personal restaurant. I honestly don't think it has changed a single thing in the 30 years I've been visiting, aside from more and more magazine articles and awards pinned to the walls. It’s still a family-run affair. It's loud, cramped and energetic, in all the best ways. It's a place for locals: after work margaritas, celebrations, family gatherings, or a quick bite to eat on a Wednesday. There's just the right amount of authentic funk and lived-in wear and tear. As far as I can tell, the menu doesn't change. You can expect all the standard Mexican dishes with the addition of some Yucatan specialties. All of it is delicious and served in large portions. The staff is always friendly and attentive. I have never had a bad experience with the service. I’m pretty sure Tommy’s doesn’t take reservations, but it’s usually no more than a 15 or 20 minute wait on a weekend night. Of course Tommy's is known and recognized worldwide for its enormous tequila selection. If you love tequila, well this is THE place. If you live in The City or happen to be visiting the Richmond District, you really must eat at Tommy’s at least once.
Really good service. Good Mexican food. The best selection of tequilas. The best selection of margaritas. The best margarita recipe: tequila, lime juice, agave syrup, that’s it. Clean bathrooms. This must-stop destination did not disappoint. If you choose to give a thumbs-up 👍🏽 or not, I hope you found my review helpful!
What a pleasant surprise! Tommy's classic margarita was one of the best classic margarita's i've tried. The food was also excellent- everything from the complementary chips and salsa (on the spicy side), to the complementary side salads that come with the purchase of an entree were excellent. Highly recommend the huevos rancheros (with a side of tortillas so you can make your own custom chilaquiles 😉), and the chicken enchiladas. Both entrees were served with a side of rice and delicious refried beans with melted cheese mixed in. I really enjoyed this place and will save it on my favorites list for the next time I am in San Francisco. The servers/bartenders are all pleasant as well, thanks for an enjoyable experience!
Tommy’s has a great vibe, cool place to have genuine Mexican flavors and obviously a killer margarita as expected. The quesadillas are to die for... Family run business, simple, but way better than many high end restaurants in San Francisco and when it comes down to the price, very cheap! Would go back any day.
Hands down the freshest margaritas. They made each margarita with fresh squeezed lime giving it a delicious tart and refreshing drink. There was a line out the door on Saturday night but ended up being pretty quick to grab a table. The food was pretty standard, tamales were great and not drowned in corn but had mostly meat inside. Everyone was super happy with their meal and the service was great. I’d also recommend coming on a weekday to do a tequila tasting. We created our own and was so fun to taste the differences.
Tommy's Mexican Restaurant is renowned for its extensive selection of 100% agave tequila Instead of the mixto or golds of the world, they sought to elevate the quality of the tequila by using only 100% blue agave tequila It’s really simply when made correctly, you’ve got a drink that is still dry, drinks smoothly, and doesn’t allow any one of the three base elements overpower the other. The key to the margarita comes in finding the right balance. An overly sweet tequila will throw your ratio of agave off and leave you sipping liquid candy. Overdo the citrus, and the cocktail drowns in a puckering pool of heartburn-inducing acidity. On most nights I/ you can find Greidy behind the bar. A master in his own rights. Knowledge based on thousands if not hundreds of thousands of margaritas he’s made. Each drink, a straw is inserted and he withdraws a small amount of his magic elixir. The sign of a true master; tasting his concoction before serving, and adjusting as needed. If you’re a local, I’d suggest coming during the week and get an education.. (tequila 101) from the masters at hand. For a true taste of the tequila, I suggest trying them straight, like a shot but sip it… don’t shoot it. Tommy’s has a special place on my drinking palette… The only other thing I can say is that they close too early 8:30pm. That’s right a restaurant/bar closing at 8:30. Even on a weekend… 8:30.. what’s up with that I ask? Why four star? They close too early !! Come for the drinks Learn about tequila and Stay for the food to soak up a little of the tequila and then find another place to continue the night…
This place was way over hyped up in a big way. I thought I was going underdressed, but when I walked in, I was surprised in a big way. The service was top-notch, but the food was horrible. Coming from a family of home cooked Mexican food, I was very disappointed. I went to try the Tommy's Margaritas, which was way overhyped as well. Who decided that this margarita was the best margarita in San Francisco? Maybe I just don't have a fancy pallet. 🤔 For it being so famous I just expected more. This place needs some TLC
Off hours meh experience. This was true mediocrity today and I felt really bad about it. I have been many times prior and was excited to take my 3 sons . All 4 of us ordered 30 dollar combo dinners. They treated the whole experience like we weren’t all that important. Food was less than stellar for first time in all my visits. It felt tired. Still a nice place, but the service was mid, the food was mid and the value for what was charged just wasn’t there. Do better next time folks. Anyone can glide by for years on reputation and slowly ride it into the ground. Be a different story.
Really don’t understand the extremely positive reviews here. The food was subpar at best and I honestly think I can make better Mexican food at home. The classic margarita was solid, but the spicy was undrinkable. It burned my intestines after 1 sip. The service from our waitress was really slow and subpar, but to be fair the rest of the staff seemed friendly. Super confused about the food and the overwhelming positive reviews because this place is not cheap
Caramba, getting an enchilada with a chunk of boiled chicken breast in it which was flavorless was so disappointing. The rice was soggy and flavorless, and the refried beans was painted on the plate...seriously, it was maybe 1/5 of a cup of beans. My goodness, the meal was lacking - lacking flavor, lacking quality, and lacking quantity. But is was piping hot and we ate it because we had not eaten anything all day. So although it was insipid we could tell it was elaborated with clean, fresh ingredients. That allowed us to consume it. Sadly, we were passing through and we will not be able to give the place a second visit. We feel it deserves a second chance. But you may want to venture out and try it.
