Love going to bopomofo! They have amazing popcorn chicken. I would recommend getting the dark meat version. I also like their shrimp burger, although I wouldn't recommend getting the side order of tots because they are a bit dry. I usually don't go for the drinks, as I prefer something with more fresh fruit. The online ordering is convenient and the staff are friendly :)
I love this cafe and it would be such a great study spot if their wifi worked better. I love their matcha lattes, especially their Bala matcha. The food was also very tasty! I went there to study but their wifi was not working even though I was able to connect to it. Everything else was 10/10 and it's a go to spot for me when I'm in the area!
Wow, this iconic boba store and restaurant is a gem that deserves a 6/5 if possible. I first heard about this place as one of the co-founders is Phil Wang, who is a founder of Wong Fu productions and also frequents the store! They are known for their delicious popcorn chicken (perfectly crispy), but their milk tea is also exceptional. I love that they have non-dairy substitutions for free, and they don't have too many options, which means that their teas are all fresh and perfected. Went back to try their other entrees and also would recommend their honey walnut shrimp burger and their beef noodle soup sandwich, an elegant edition of a French dip sandwich. Don't recommend their mapo tofu tater tots which were on the more expensive side and not that tasty I had their brown sugar assam milk tea with 50% sugar and thought it was perfect in every way. There are 3-4 dining spaces inside and 4-5 tables/benches outside. There is even a place to wait for drinks to be ready. Wait times can be long (15+ minutes even if one arrives right when the store opens), but it is possible to order ahead and come pick up if one is in a rush. The service is amazing. The person taking our order told us all about the different types of drinks and specials. She had a bubbly personality and treated us with great kindness. Lastly, the theme and decor of the restaurant are well thought out. Based on the Bopomofo system that Taiwanese children use to learn pronunciations of words, the store has the characters throughout, a cool neon sign showing the area code of 626, and two tigers battling based on a children's nursery rhyme.
WongFu is very nostalgic for me, so of course I had to check out their shop while in L.A. Phil was working when I was there, which was cool to see. I am also happy to report that I enjoyed the food and drinks as well! The watermelon special that I got was refreshing, and the popcorn chicken was super flavorful and crunchy.
Finally got to come!!! Expect to pay the quality of the food and drinks. I know some people said they had to wait...but I went on a weekday and ordered ahead. They served it around the time they said they would. Came up from NorCal, didn't get to see Phil this time but I guess I'll have to go back. Favorite food: onion pancake and queso and Mopo Tofu Tots Favorite drink of the group: Carrot Matcha But I liked the summer blend. Tried their LA autumn 50% sweet and it was really refreshing still sweet but nothing I would complain about.
Second time in LA and I had to stop by Bopomofo again! Staff were super nice and welcoming and also recommended a drink for my friend. Its a small cafe with just enough seatings. We came around 11am and there were plenty of seats. We ordered the Honey Walnut Shrimp Burger, Taiwanese Fried Chicken Sandwich, mapo tots with runny egg, Strawberry corn milk and strawberry basil ginger lemonade. The shrimp burger was lightly battered and had a good amount of shrimp filling. The spicy taiwanese fried chicken sandwich was juicy and fried to perfection sandwiched with their famous pineapple bun. The runny egg with the mapo tots made the tots a bit creamy and flavorful. I was hesitant to try their strawberry corn milk, but surprisingly it was pretty good, not too sweet and you can actually taste the corn. Wish I was able to meet Phil that day, but maybe next time when I visit LA again.
We ordered the two most popular food here: Popcorn chicken and Spicy Taiwanese chicken sandwich. Both of them were very good but I don't think the sandwich is worth the price. We spent $10.25 for a big potion of Popcorn chicken while the Spicy Taiwanese chicken sandwich costs us $13.25. The flavor of the fried chicken for both taste sort of the same but way more meat for Popcorn chicken. Staff was efficient even though the line was long. Our order was ready in about 5 or 10 minutes. The store was clean and very crowded inside. They also provide some tables and seats in front of the store. We were lucky to get one because it was so nice sitting out there while enjoying the food.
Love this place! We ordered spicy popcorn chicken, shrimp burger, tater tots, brown sugar milk tea with house pudding. Everything was very fresh and delicious. The service was excellent and portion size was worth the money. The only thing is they gave a bit too much ice in the milk tea. All in all, a great place to have a quick lunch and do some work (weekday afternoons less busy). Highly recommend!
I have only been able to hear about this place but finally was able to try it myself. It is pretty cool to know that this place is ran by WongFu, which me and my friends have watched since they first started making videos. When me and my family first got there, the first person we saw was Phil, tending and being extremely attentive to all the customers. You can just see the heart that he puts into the place, making sure everyone is enjoying their time, and even pausing to take selfies with people if they asked. This place is very interesting. It is like they chose to have certain food Chinese food that people like (like popcorn chicken, mapo tofu) and fused it together with awesome drinks. First off to note is that it is probably easier to order ahead of time. There is outside seating but it is all first come first serve. If you happen to be vegetarian there are other options as well. Food Since it was our first time here we wanted to try many of their items. We ordered: Honey Walnut Shrimp Burger - This was quite good, pretty much if you ever had walnut shrimp as a dish, picture that in a burger. Spicy Popcorn Chicken - This is a classic Taiwanese snack, and they do it quite well! Mapo Tots- Added the fried egg for $1.50 - This was so interesting. Being a fan of Mapo Tofu, then adding it on top of tots was actually pretty good. HEY Sesame Milk- They mentioned that they made the sesame in house, although it was quite good, I would probably ask for less sweet next time I believe they really researched and did a lot of planning before they opened this place (and their new location in Artesia) Fusing great food, thinking about the customer, their choices. I guess you can say the food is similar to their video production, where they have thought of reaching out to as many different emotions and familiar scenarios someone can go through, but this time they are now able to through it through food and taste. I think the most interesting thing about their drinks is that I would consider them quite premium. Working previously at a boba place, it is interesting that they use no powdered creamer, no artificial flavors or syrups. I have to come back and try some of the other drinks that they have and give their coffee a try while grabbing some more Mapo Tots. Look forward to drop by again or try their other location soon!
Thanks for amazing services and drinks! Food was great here! Mapo tots with no cheese, this was such a creative item. The tots were crispy. Tofu and pork were flavorful. Had just the right kick of heat. I definitely wanna come again to try the Strawberry Corn Milk and other bigger foodie options.
Easily my favorite Boba shop in all of California. Not only are the drinks super tasty, but they use all natural sweeteners so it's a healthier option as well! My fave by far is the Carrot Matcha which you wouldn't think would be very tasty because of the healthy carrot ingredient, but it is to die for, no joke. Made up of real carrot juice, slightly sweet, balanced with rich matcha, it's super yummy and is even Instagram ready with the Green, White and Orange colors with the Boba. I've tried most of the items on the food menu (currently available only from Fri-Sun) and my faves are probably the Taiwanese Fried Chicken Sandwich (Classic Taiwanese salt-pepper chicken breast filet, Napa cabbage slaw, Thai basil aioli, cucumbers, on a buttery bolo bun) and their fusion Mapo Tots (hearty mapo tofu, ground pork, and cheese on top of fluffy tater tots) with the egg add-on. Bopomofo is a passion project started up by Youtuber Phillip Wang (Wong Fu Productions) and his partner Eric Wang (not related). But unlike your typical food service business that just has a celebrity name attached to it, these guys are actually in the trenches and has worked hard to ensure that the quality of the products they are serving is top notch, and it shows. On my last trip there, it just so happen to be National Watermelon Day so I was able to enjoy their seasonal Watermelon Oak Milk Boba drink (100% pure filtered fresh-pressed watermelon juice with Califia oat milk), which was incredible. I am still regretting not buying another one during my trip. Due to the pandemic, they are currently operating as take out only Tue-Sun, with drinks only Tue-Thu. You can order in real-time on the right hand side walk up door, but they are usually fairly busy so I would recommend ordering ahead on their web site) and picking up on the left hand side door/table. An overall must-do/eat while in the area. You will not regret it.
Mixed feeling about the food at this place. Popcorn chicken is a 5 star item. Honey glazed tater tots is just food. Not tasty, not bad just whatever. 3 star maybe. Drinks are nothing special but taste good though. I think I've been to too many boba drink shops. It's good Atmosphere is fine but I wished high chairs had more backing. You'll understand once you sit in one of them. Repeat: just to for the popcorn chicken. Everything else is probably forgettable. But the popcorn chicken is awesome.
A bit on the pricey end but quite good. Ordered a Spicy Taiwanese Fried Chicken Sandwich w/ Mapo Tots ($20) and a Matcha Jin Xuang Oolong ($7.50). The sandwich was good. The chicken was a bit savory, and the bread was a bit sweet, making a nice mix of the two (wasn't spicy at all). The Mapo tater tots were crispy, and the cheese on top made it delightful (the tofu didn’t add much to the overall flavor but was good either way). I enjoyed the matcha since I like the earthy taste with a dash of sweetness. Now for the atmposhere and service. The place was a bit small with a small café design but the outdoor seats were nice since soothing music was playing on a speaker. The workers was also nice and gave an uplifting vibe to the place. Recieved my order in ~10 min. An overall good place to eat/drink every once in a while, especially with friends!
I had the coffee milk tea with boba and was really impressed. It might be the best I've had in LA. The popcorn chicken was solid but unremarkable (although I really appreciated that they have the white meat option). The guy taking my order was really friendly too. Just be warned that it's quite pricey and you might have to wait 20 minutes for the order. But I will definitely come back sometime for the boba!
I was excited to try this place because of who the owners are! It’s a cute little spot. Good seating inside and outside. Seemed a little cramped inside though. We got the honey walnut shrimp burger 🍔 and the ma po tofu tots. They were both ok. Kind of strange combinations to be honest… can’t quite put a finger on the taste… the burger was really juicy though. I think the spicy sauce on the tots was slightly weird. Just overall odd on both ends🤔 lol but I appreciate the effort haha. Got the coffee boba 🧋 too and that was very good! Overall good boba but meh food!
Portion could be adjusted for the price point but the taste is definitely there. My popcorn bento was overcooked a bit but the sauce actually saved it. I do recommend the drinks as the B.O.G. I got was great. Maybe I'll try the mapo tater tots next time.
Got the Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken which was a sizable portion. The outside spice flavoring was pretty spot on and the frying just the right kind of crunch. However the dark meat option that we ordered tasted a little off, maybe slightly sour - possibly too much Chinese cooking wine. Service was fast. The atmosphere was lively.
