The first thing you'll see walking in is the giant fish tank packed with live fish. The fish tank sets the standard. When was the last time you walked into a sushi restaurant and saw the live fish that made its way on your plate? This place cooks from live fish. The next thing closest to freshness is cooking live fish caught off the boat. Everyone talks about the lobster, so let me start with something else: Elephant clams (geoduck clam). It wasn't until adulthood I realized many Asian cultures eat raw fish. Here, the elephant clam is a completely different experience than Japanese cuisines. Served in raw form (a.k.a., sushi), this dish comes out looking simple. But once you bite in, you get that firm, slightly crunchy texture. The flavor is mild, sweet, and distinctly oceanic without being fishy, so you really notice the freshness. Because of how subtle elephant clam is, they typically don’t bury it under heavy sauce. Instead, just enough seasoning, maybe a touch of citrus or wasabi, completes the dish. This is intentional; Chinese dishes are characteristically flavorful. But this dish is allowed to speak for itself. I had to save some money for this fish 🙂
Best lobster I've ever had! Food here is amazing and worth a trip from San Francisco! Black pepper beef is amazing, tender and juicy, green beans are phenomenal fresh and perfectly cooked. Basil clams were a huge surprise. I've never had clams cooked this way and tasted amazing. Their salt and pepper squid was definitely better than most can make it. Be sure to get your lobster with noodles!
We Came here for dinner with friends and everything we ordered was solid. Even though my friend ordered for the table and I don’t know all the exact dish names, the food really spoke for itself. The lobster with noodles was the highlight of the night. The noodles had a slight crunch, soaked up all the flavor, and the lobster portion was generous with sweet, meaty bites. Easily the best dish on the table. The black pepper beef was also excellent — very tender, juicy, and incredibly aromatic. The black pepper flavor was bold without being overpowering, and it smelled amazing as soon as it hit the table. We also had an asparagus soup, which was comforting and well-balanced. Light, tasty, and not too heavy — a nice contrast to the richer dishes. The Yangzhou fried rice is a must-order. It was packed with pork and shrimp, nicely seasoned, and didn’t feel dry or greasy at all. Simple but done really well. Overall, everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. Great place for family-style dining and sharing dishes. Definitely coming back.
Absolutely one of the best lobster dishes I have ever had! Consistently great food , especially that Newport special lobster dish. The current price is $32/lb and so well worth it! We come here about once or twice a year since it is pretty far from our home but it is so worth the drive! Huge portions, and always scrumptious! We have tried the garlic green beans, the house special fried rice and the chow mein as well.. all great!!
The restaurant has 4 signature dishes. This place is known for the seafood. The house lobster is excellent and is easy enough to break apart with your hands. It had eggs along with multiple bits of calmonized green onions. I was most impressed with the clams. These are probably the best clams I have ever had. They had a mix of basil with jalapenos and it didn't overpower the clam flavor. Due to LA being close to the sea I could tell how fresh all the ingredients were.
I was excited for the Newport Special Lobster, and it lived up to my expectations - an impressive huge lobster covered with a mountain of scallion and jalapenos, carefully arranged for easy access to the meat. It's hard to find this kind of dish anywhere else, and my taste buds were buzzing with happiness. Make sure to bring a group to help you eat it, and even then, you'll probably have plenty of leftovers to bring home. Delicious!
This place was amazing! The service was great. They had free valet parking. The portions are HUGE! It seems as if their specialty lobster dish was ordered most but I didn't get that. I got Kung pao shrimp and crab fried rice. Also ordered crispy noodles for the first time. I would highly recommend this place and I will most definitely be back!
The restaurant is well known for their lobsters but I came alone and even the smallest ones will be too much for me. The lobster will be $30+ per lbs and minimum one they have is 4 lbs. I ended up ordering the House Special fried rice. It is essentially kind of like Yung Chow fried rice with shrimp, bbq pork , but they add chicken to it. Now that might sound like an ordinary dish ., but their version was quite special. The wok hay really came through in the flavor. There is slight sweetness comes from the bit of pork bbq. The chicken actually add some crispy texture to the dish. If the fried rice I had was any indication of excellence. The other dishes will certainly be even more mind boggling good! Lobster noodles - super $$ but excellent. It makes it worth it with a big group Luklak - was so so Steamed Chicken - really good! Fred tofu - pretty good Pickels - I won’t order it next time
Second visit and it did not disappoint!!! It's a must Seafood restaurant when you’re in San Gabriel/Alhambra area. Attended a birthday celebration and absolutely enjoyed almost every single dish ordered. Steamed King Crab - the presentation is the same as the taste! Soft, tasty and it’s worth the $700 price! 5/5 Beef Loc lac - tender/juicy and the right amount of pepper and salt. Dipping sauce is available too. 5/5 Newport Special Lobster - seasonings coated the lobster meat so well with tons of green onions that makes it too tasty. 5/5 House Special Fried Noodles - fresh and delicious vegetables. It just the right amount of sauce for my palette. 5/5 Braided Crabmeat and Fish Maw Soup - had two portion since it was good. Perfect soup for the chilly night. 4/5 Crispy Fried Sole fish - nothing special. Fish is thin so it’s crispy. 3/5 Special Fried Rice - it could had been perfect if it just a little more salt. Love the toppings though. 4/5 Our servers were great and attentive. Great dining atmosphere. Newport Seafood is the spot to go when craving for seafood/Chinese dishes. Strongly recommended!! Be prepared for a valet if no available parking spots on the street. Wish it’s free since I am guessing parking is solely for the restaurant.

Great fresh ingredients. Attentive service when you need it. Slightly louder but typical in authentic Chinese restsurants.

Always it's a pleasure my favorite place for Chinese food in LA. I just love the food, it's fast and clean, and the waiters are always kind.

This restaurant has been around for many years and continues to impress! The space is clean, the service attentive, and the food remains consistently delicious. They valet during dinner time.

Still good, but missing the spark it used to have Newport Seafood used to be one of my absolute favorite seafood spots in LA, but my recent visit left me feeling like something was a little off. Don’t get me wrong — the food is still good, but it just didn’t wow me the way it used to. The beef dish was a bit soggy, lacking that usual sear and texture I loved, and the stir-fried noodles were on the dry side, missing the usual balance and richness. Maybe it was just an off day, but I’m hoping this was a one-time slip. I’d still come back — just hoping to see Newport Seafood return to its top form.
The food was good, although it was better back then. Portions are a good size. Lobster is fresh but it wasn't as tasty as last time. They cook it with a lot of spices and the sauce is good so it makes up for it. Service is a bit off. Some of the servers were pleasant but the guy taking our order was very impatient. Like I'd like to order more than one item so let me think about it. He was just rushing. Not the best service. If you come during off peak hours, there's plenty of parking in their lot.
Come hungry! Fresh, scrumptious foods all around. NSR is so good, I feel bad for dropping the star. But, because it is so good, you would expect the service to be a little better. And the general atmosphere to be a little friendlier. But, that is only because they are really good. We sometimes drive a while just to have a good meal. Driving to Newport Seafood Restaurant; this location in particular and only just this location, is well worth the trip. You will enjoy every bite. Order the House Special Lobster. A must.
Went back here to celebrate a big milestone birthday and the food was good. The last time we went here, the cool(s) must of had an off day! So glad it went back to the tastes like we always remember it! The main dish would be the house special lobster with green onion and jalapeños along with the shaky beef, claims with basil leaves, salt and pepper squid and the peas sprouts. They were tasty. We got there at 5:15pm on a rainy Friday night and the place was emptied. This is really unusual but glad we got in without any issues. Service was great and we almost go the restaurant to ourselves. Price is a big on a high inside but worth it since it’s a big occasion.
Send noodz please. I am so glad I came here for their lobster noodle because it is the BEST in SoCal. I love how they flavored the lobster and the noodles were just right. I ordered that and a specialty dish black bean sauce w clams to share. The lobster noodle dish was huge and can be split among 4 or more people. I do recommend coming here with more people so you can try out different dishes they offer. I also love their signature house made XO sauce because it is real scallop and the flavoring is just fire and goes well with everything. It is so bad that they only sell the sauce in 626 location (San Gabriel). Their pricing here is not bad at all and if you are here during lunch hours, you can catch their lunch special menu for deals! :)
Food is really delicious and worth every penny. I’m not huge lobster fan but the lobsters here are amazing and juicy. I always get the Newport special sauce with noodles. I love their crabs with salt. The greens and soups and literally everything is good but portions are huge. Service and atmosphere are definitely not why you go to this place.
This place was packed with tons of people when we went! The fresh lobsters and other seafoods are great! The fried rice was good with the cha shao being very tender and flavourful. The veggies was cooked with great temperature control. The fried tofu was not so good. The overall experience was satisfying, the front desk gave us a table really fast and the servers were like on 2x mode going around the restaurant. The foods were served real fast! The pace was a bit fast dining in, felt quite rushed to eat there. We can understand it's a busy business.
Typical Chinese food restaurant. Nothing exciting on the menu except the Lobster in garlic sauce.

We went to Newport Seafood Restaurant for Chinese seafood in San Gabriel to celebrate a major milestone birthday. This restaurant is known for the Cantonese and Vietnamese seafood. The Chinese influenced interior decoration was charming with elegant mahogany partitions. Ambiance was very loud and busy. The hostess took us to a private banquet room set up.No warm greetings or introduction to the restaurant. We were told immediately that we got 90 minutes to finish our meal. The private banquet rooms are not very private and not sound proof. We kept hearing the constant celebratory noises and conversations from other private banquet rooms. Guess this is typical of a Chinese banquet hall. After we sat down (before ordering our dinner), a waitstaff walked in our banquet room with a tray of drinks and appetizers and tried hard to upsell us. We got the cucumber appetizers to start our meal but had to firmly declined to get their drinks and other side dishes. For our dinner, we decided to try the classic combo family meal and added additional rice dishes: Braided crabmeat and fish maw soup was a hit with our group. It was warm and delicious with detectable crab meats. Waitstaff didn’t serve up the soup to us like any traditional Chinese restaurants. In fact, waitstaff at this restaurant didn’t serve us at all, other than bringing us the dishes from the kitchen. The soup was a good start but unfortunately, it didn’t get much better…. Newport lobster special, the house special, was nothing special at all. It was overcooked and some pieces were difficult to get the meat out of the shell. Lobster was battered and fried before sautéed in the green onion and garlic sauce. This signature dish lacked distinct flavors and the meat was on the dry side and the presentation was lacking. It lacked the distinguished taste of herbs and spices and the normal fresh and sweet succulent lobster taste. Beef Luc Lac, the meat was thick and tender. Honey walnut shrimp was a good blend of texture and taste. Shrimps had the nice caramelized shell covered each & every shrimp and added a crisp texture. The shrimps were fresh, plump and covered with slightly sweet and flavorful sauce. Clams with spicy basil sauce was delicious, big and really fresh clams in a light basil sauce. Fried whole fish was a big disappointment. The fish was brutally burned/fried, super, super crispy texture, like eating crunchy French fries. It was fried so crispy and long that we couldn’t even find the fish cheeks. Salt and pepper crab dish was a deep-fried mess. It was fried but overcooked to the point that the crab meat was stuck to the shell. We barely found edible chunks. Sautéed pea sprout was delish. The steamed, free range chicken dish was a total rip off with very little meat on the chicken, mostly just skins and bones served on a large plate. This dish was barely touched by our group for obvious reasons. House special fried rice was decent. And the Yang Chow fried rice was also good. During the whole dinner time, the waitstaff hardly checked in on us. We had to flag down servers to request napkins, change of plates and the wet hand towels to clean our hands after eating lobster and crab. We didn’t get any attention. We were ignored by waitstaff who were making small talk with other customers. We didn’t want to leave a good tip since the waitstaff didn’t provide good services. However, we were coerced paying the mandatory 18% tips. Good tips should be earned and not mandatory. Overall, this Michelin guide restaurant was very underwhelming at best due to the mediocre food quality at a hefty price tag and services were basically non existent. Near the end of our dinner, our waitstaff had the nerves to remind us that our 90 minutes allotted dining time was up. Our tab was over $1,000 and we absolutely didn’t get the Michelin guide experience at Newport Seafood. Do yourself (and your wallet) a big favor, go eat somewhere else as there are much better restaurants in the San Gabriel area.
