Opinions de Angelou’s Mexican Grill San Jose
First time here while visiting San Jose on 11/23/2024. Came here because the place across the street was too busy and no regrets! Amazing drinks! The bar tender delivered great service. The Green Day seasonal cocktail was my favorite!
Warning: I like spicy food. I'm an Indian bois, deal with it. Pollo Adobo Pizza (wish I had the photo) Gayoza (chicken potstickers) Other food we had: Trio Mushroom Pizza Mac and Cheese Mazcal drink was ♥️
Drinks was bomb, food was fantastic, service was fast at 9pm Friday night. This place is underrated
Really nice place. Drinks were reasonably priced and they were very well made! Nice atmosphere as well!
Good food great vibe and friendly with groups.
Fun employees! I really felt like my friends and I can let loose. Great drinks and all smiles! I walked in because they had a sign for happy hour from 5:30-8:30!! No where else in San José did they offer this! Daniel, and Amanda were so helpful with helping select drinks. Derrik was a nice gentleman and always had us smiling. Please come here if you want a fun friend ambiance! Well chosen team! Will come back when in the area!
Had the premium set, yellowtail and tuna nigiri and a dungeness hand roll and both sauces, all very good
The service here is top notch. Customer service at its finest. Happy hour 5:30-8:30 tues-sat. Whiskey Weds. Is perfect for a business meeting or a couple to have an intimate moment & punchbowl Thursdays are a great time with a group of friends. FRIDAYS & SATURDAY NIGHTS ARE JUST AN UNBELIEVABLE TIME LOUD MUSIC, DANCING, FOOD, DRINKS AND GREAT TO SOCIALIZE WITH AMAZING PEOPLE. ..5 STARS +++++
Weekend reviews: There's usually no line to get in and their Japanese old fashions and lychee martini are delicious! That's probably why I keep coming back and I really should order something different next time haha. Not sure if we get lucky every time but there's always like one last open table for us. Drinks: 7/10 Service: 5/10 Vibes: 5/10 Value: 5/10
I must have been here 10+ times as this is my default choice when I am at work. I really like the decor of this place. It’s clean and usually not busy during lunch time. The price is reasonable and the food was good and consistent. I can’t say I tried every thing on the menu but the fish taco is one of the best and I highly recommend. Good for party of 1 - 6 people. Parking may be hard to find but there is a paid ACE parking lot just 40 yards away. Also 2 hour street parking if you can find one. No free parking.
If you’re looking for a spot that keeps you coming back, Angelou’s Mexican Grill is it. Everything is fresh and flavorful, but the asada fries are the real showstopper—perfectly seasoned carne asada piled high over crispy fries, loaded with all the right toppings. One bite and you’ll understand why they’re unforgettable. Friendly service, generous portions, and bold flavors make this a must-stop in San Jose. Those asada fries alone will have you planning your next visit. 🌮🔥
Great tasting food, great savers, great drinks. I am a fan of spicy tequila drinks and I ordered the jalapeño margarita substituted dos vecinos mezcal tequila and best spicy tequila margarita I ever had! I had fresh ceviche and birria tacos they did not disappoint. The sauce was so good I took home a bottle. I’ll be back.
Love this place! We veganized some of their vegetarian offerings, specifically their veggie burrito and the enchiladas. The flavors were on point, so balanced and elevated. The sauces were really flavorful as well. The nature-themed ambiance made the whole experience even nicer. This is going to be a regular spot for us.
I got two potato tacos and a mango house drink they had available. I got seated, had my order taken, and food/drink given in under ten minutes. The service was really speedy. The tacos are fried so be aware of that, but they are loaded and very good. For the amount of food I got the prices were more than fair. I got filled up fast and had to pace my last few bites. I def. recommend it! I recommend the green sauce over the orange sauce. The orange sauce was similar to la Vic’s sauce but a bit lighter.
This place is a whole package! We came in for a quick bite and ordered a super Burrito and a Cali Burrito 🌯… it is so tasty and super fresh. Everything is made at the location. The place is super clean and has a lot of interesting art hanging. They serve alcohol too, so I would recommend it for lunch and for a dinner with a group of friends. It’s a hit!!!
This was one of the highly rated places in downtown San Jose, and it's easy to see why. The food was delicious and came out pretty quickly, and the place has an aura of history looming about it with all the decor. The staff was polite as well. Has some outdoor seating too. This is now going to be a to-visit spot on every trip to san jose now!
Personally I feel that this is the best Mexican food I have ever tasted in the Bay area. The cal burrito was awesome and full, couldn't finish it. The carnitas plate was also great - served with hot corn tortillas, beans, salad, guacamole and sour cream. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Really appreciate the girl who took our order. Even though she didn't speak fluent English, she was very helpful answering our questions, trying to show us pictures etc. The place was warm and cozy, but had that old building smell. But it looks like they are moving around the block sometime in June 2023.
A nice little spot in downtown San Jose. We had a few starters, pizzas and drinks. The best and most impressive was the pizzas. We ordered the five-spice duck pizza and the pork banh mi one, which were very creative and of great fusion taste. Beers and cocktails were also good while the cocktails were a little bit overpriced in general. Overall a good experience!
I really wanted to come here for the Banh Mi pizza and it was good timing as there was a game on so the BF got to watch the game. Me – Food, Him – Game = win-win. We got the pizza and it was pretty good. The flavors were good and I liked how it was more like a flatbread. We also go the kimcheese fries which were good as well. With those two items, we were pretty satisfied. Since we stayed long to watch the game, we ordered a couple of drinks to justify taking up our seats for so long. We got the mugi mule and the lychee martini, which were pretty good, but definitely pricey for what it was. I don’t know if it was just that day, but there was only one girl serving the whole place, until a second one came to help her out at least an hour later. Because of that, the service was kind of slow, but she was a really good waitress. Overall, they have good Asian Fusion bar food and drinks and a chill place to watch a game. Make a reservation though as they don’t have a lot of seating.
Drinks were pretty good. Chicken wings and fries have great flavor. Highly recommend. Wish the happy hour was a bit more extensive. Only a few signature drinks and starters are included on happy hour prices.
Very attentive hostess, nice interior, music at a reasonable volume, not too crowded or empty. Hostess Lena kept coming back just in time to refill our glasses from the bottle of soju being shared at my table. (The mere fact that Nomikai carries soju is a point in its favor.) These are the good things! The not so good: they were out of the soju we wanted (there were only two varieties available). They were out of the duck far popcorn. And the "seven spice nori fries" were dry, kinda stale, and generally boring. (McDonald's fries are way better and far cheaper!) So... skip the fries... and don't count on anything you order actually being available! That said, the spam musubi was delicious, and Lena is definitely a credit to the establishment. I would probably go again... but it's not my new go-to spot ;)
Interesting Asian fusion place with food and drinks. Place really tries to be hip and clubby while the food is above average. Proposes interesting dishes like kimchi pizza and ends up perfecting nothing.
The best chicken wings I've EVER had!
Came here to visit my cousin. We came for drinks. Even though we just finished dinner, we still ordered the chicken wings. So glad I did!!! They were so good! The chicken wings were still crispy and they weren't overly dressed with the sauce. Still juicy and had a nice kick. Perfect! Service was great and the waitress that helped us was so nice (and pretty). I had the tom ka, the mule, and a couple of shots. Standard prices for drinks. Will definitely come back to check out the rest of the menu.
Food was pretty good and very tasty. I thought maybe the portions could have been slightly larger. Prices were ok. Ambience fair to good. Wait service sucked. We had hike. Salads and salad tacos but only gave us a fork each no other cutlery. Didn’t stop back to ask if we wanted anything or if the food was ok.
Great location in downtown San Jose. But when we went on a Saturday night, how come the place was empty? The food was just okay. The service was good. A lot of the things on the menu was fried. We initially went for a Japanese whiskey flight tasting and stayed for the food. The whiskey tasting was fine.
This place is hit or miss. I've come on the good days and the bad days. The food is good, I liked korean Fried Wings and the Miso Mac. The club only has one bathroom for both genders, so expect to be waiting in line for a long time. The drinks are inconsistent, but I always go for the saki bombs.
I ordered a potato taco and a shrimp taco. The potato taco was delicious and well seasoned. But the shrimp taco was not good and lacking seasoning. The only thing giving it flavor was the orange salsa. If I were to come back, I would get the potato tacos since they were favorite part of the meal.
Drink volumes are pretty inconsistent. In my picture, the drink on the left is served after, and untouched. The drink on the right is the same and had already been drank, yet still has more than the new drink.
Honestly the service was decent but the food, in San jose, not great. Maybe if you drink its better but we are not drinkers. My carne asada taco was good. The ceviche was pretty good, but the toastada was stale. My fish taco, bland. My partners nachos presentation was good, meat tender and well seasoned but they used liquid cheese. Didn't feel authentic at all. It was decent all around but I think we'll stick to food trucks next time for more authenticity.
The refried / smashed beans were so salty they were inedible. This was my first time at this newer location, I won't be back. After spending almost $50 for dinner for 2, I know my money will be well spent elsewhere. Service that is lacking, mediocre food, salty beans (who is cooking back there?) To Go order took +20 minutes (the parking meter ran out of time) for 3 items and I tipped. Big mistake, huge......
Angelou’s is located in downtown San Jose, and has some great Instagram posts showing a vibrant and beautiful interior and some amazing drinks and Taco Tuesday specials. Don’t fall for it! It was quiet, and on a Tuesday, I came in to give it a try. When seated I asked about the Taco Tuesday specials and was told tacos were $2. We ordered 6 and a coke, a very small side of guacamole, and the bill was $42+ dollars. Even though I specifically asked about the Taco Tuesday, the tacos we ordered were not on special. Only after the bill comes do they tell you this. No utensils were given, the guacamole side was forgotten and we had to go ask for it. Also, for you taco aficionados out there, who puts beans in tacos? Businesses that are trying to puff up their product with cheap fillers, that’s who. The Baja fish taco comes with a piece of fish that is about an inch long and all batter, heavily over-fried. The carnitas tasted old and the tortillas were cheap and basic. Definitely would never come back.
This place was super unpleasant & unprofessional. My friends' & I were waiting in line forever to get in last Saturday night while we noticed they were letting certain ppl in without a wait. We totally felt discriminated against. The guys at the door seemed rude & unfriendly. Finally we were seated outside but told we had to buy drinks. Well duh why else would we be there? We were looking for a good time. This place wasn't it! If you're not what they like or you don't fit their criteria, you should just pass this place up.
Over priced sketch mex. Might as well go to Chipolte nothing special here. Gristly steak, hardly any steak in the burrito. Pretty sad for $17 it should have more steak then loaded with rice. Bummer! This place sucks.
This place is extremely overhyped. I should've known the food would be mediocre when I didn't see a single Hispanic person eating there. I ordered a Super al pastor burrito, I am almost 100% sure it was chorizo, however, when I brought it back, the cook himself told me that it was al pastor and that it's supposed to taste like chorizo - huh?! Been slamming al pastor for years, and it's never, but ok. The "super" comes with beans, rice, salsa, and avocado. Never saw the avocado, and once I opened it to disect it, all I saw was rice and "al pastor". Popular spot for the club goers, maybe? Anything tastes good when you're hammered, I suppose. Don't come here if you enjoy REAL Mexican food.
Terrible first experience. Finally decided to try it based on great reviews and was really disappointed. Ordered takeout and got home about 30 min later to find my super burrito (no meat) was missing guac, crema, and salsa. There was a LITTLE BIT of cheese, but it was basically a dry beans/rice burrito. I also was disappointed with the Baja fish taco, the fish was an odd dark color inside, and it wasn't just the breading. Tried calling the number on the receipt so they could inform the kitchen what goes in a super burrito, and no answer and "mailbox is full" so couldn't leave a message. Not a good look for a business. Sadly will not try again.
