Opinions de La Catalana San José
The food was honestly so good. The tapas were super flavorful and fun to share, and every dish that came out just kept getting better. Everything tasted fresh and well made without feeling too fancy or over the top. The paella was definitely the star. The rice was cooked perfectly and had so much flavor in every bite. It was warm, comforting, and just really satisfying. The staff were also amazing. Everyone was so friendly and easygoing, and they made us feel really welcome. They suggested a wine pairing that went so well with the food and made the whole meal even better. Such a great spot for good food, good wine, and good vibes. I’ll definitely be back.
Had a great time at La Catalana for a last night date night. They have an extensive spanish wine menu that the owner helped us navigate to pick a wine that we truly enjoyed. The food was delicious and the ambiance was very cozy. They had live music on Saturday night which added to the ambience and the mood. We throughly enjoyed our evening and appreciated the recommendations the owner made both on food and wine. Highly recommend it for date nights and special occasions.
I've been to La Catalana a couple times now, and it's consistently a 10/10 experience. The food is amazing, the service and ambience are always on point. The staff is incredibly friendly and I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy authentic Spanish cuisine paired with great wine. They've also recently expanded the space to accommodate private events which is a great addition. Today I tried the Canelons and it might be my new favorite item on the menu.
We came here for dinner and has a lovely time. Atmosphere was cozy and friendly, and the service was good and responsive. We had the potatoes bravas and the olive oil tomato toast as appetizers, and the potatoes bravas were the star of the show. We had the seafood rice as a main course and it was flavorful and rich. Reasonable selection of wine and beer. For two people with appetizers, main, and 1 drink each, it came out to $150 with tax and tip. For a nice date night out, this is a great choice.
Excellent restaurant serving traditional food from Spain. Low key spot in silicon valley with a calm atmosphere. Real paella and fiduea is served here and make sure you get the lamb sliders.
We’ve been trying different places for a while looking for good pulpo, and Catalana completely blew us away. Their pulpo was honestly the best I’ve ever had—super tender, great flavor, just perfectly cooked. You can tell they know what they’re doing. The owner was also really sweet and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. If you’re a fan of octopus, seriously, come here. This is the spot.
I think what really shines about La Catalana is how welcome the staff makes you feel. I've been here for my dad's birthday and my parents' anniversary and both times, the waitstaff's hospitality could easily rival that of any michelin star restaurant, but without the pretentiousness. Every interaction is clearly from a genuine motivation to make sure every guest has an enjoyable experience. Roy and Josh were both excellent servers! Aside from the service, La Catalana has the best curated Spanish wine selection I've seen in the SF Bay Area. The owner makes a yearly trip to Spain and directly sources wine from some of the best producers of the region. The food is also great and clearly shows a dedication to preserve the original cultural dishes, but elevate them in a modern way. Needless to say, I will be back many times in the future!
We absolutely LOVE this place!! This is our go-to place for tapas- the food is always EXCEPTIONAL and the wait staff and owners are incredibly nice and so kind. We had the pulpo (must have!!) in a saffron (?) sauce that was amazing, the croquettes with ham which were perfectly breaded and crispy, the gambas (of course!) in a unique spinach (?) sauce, and the Spanish pork sausage with a white bean sauce, then finished up with a yummy creme brulee that had just a hint of cinnamon. The Chef NAILED it! All the flavors were so great and perfectly hinted for fall. And the Sangria too!!! Probably the best sangria I've had anywhere and we've been all over the world including so many great restaurants across Spain. We really enjoy the food, service, and genuine kindness at this wonderful little hidden gem of a restaurant- thanks again for everything!
First time here and for my birthday. What can I say but WOW! Had three appetizers, mushrooms, croquettes and tarta de chorizo. All with excellent unique flavors. We ordered as our main, their seafood paella. Also excellent and unique in its preparation. We had all three of their desserts, flan, pumpkin cheesecake and a flavorful honey goat cheese dessert. Sounds different but it was excellent as well. Great selection of Spanish wines. Great wait staff especially Roy. Portions are good size. Prices are reasonable. Parking can be tight when this place is busy. Overall an excellent place I will return to. A hidden gem. And definitely great place for a birthday.
Warning: don’t go here if you have unrealistic expectations on wait time etc. This place can get crowded so plan accordingly. But it’s a family owned business and they try their best to bring great exp for you guys. You guys don’t understand. This place is your next hidden gem! I love Spanish food and have always been a LOYAL cust for the oh so famous place is Palo Alto ( if u know ) but I decided to give this place a try since I saw it on Insta. I dare say this is a hidden gem that people should definitely know! Vibe: immacuLate! Went here and there’s live music, from lighting and service omg 10/10 Price: it’s definitely up there, BUT you’ll know why! I was surprised how this place put high quality ingredients, you can actually taste the spices and saffron! If you love wine this place is the way to go. All handpicked wine from Barcelona. Food: 10/10 I brought my friend here, and we were impressed with how good the food were. Every dishes are heavy on spices but so well balanced. They have everything for everyone! They have traditional noodle paella that you can’t get anywhere else. I love it here will definitely come back.
From the moment we stepped into La Catalana, we were transported to an authentic Spanish-Catalan experience. The atmosphere exudes warmth, passion, and attention to detail, making it the perfect place for a memorable evening. The food was absolutely delicious, with every dish crafted with care and rich in flavor. The tapas were exquisite, and the hand-selected Spanish-Catalan wines perfectly complemented our meal. Rodrigo, our server, went above and beyond, providing exceptional recommendations and ensuring we had an incredible dining experience. His attentiveness and knowledge truly elevated our visit. A special highlight was meeting Monserrat, the owner, whose kindness and hospitality made us feel at home. Her love for the community and dedication to creating a welcoming space is evident in every aspect of La Catalana. We visited to celebrate friendship and an award received by one of our friends, and we couldn’t have chosen a better place. As community leaders, we wholeheartedly recommend this hidden gem to everyone. La Catalana is more than a restaurant—it’s an experience filled with passion, culture, tradition, and heart. We have found a new favorite spot, and more importantly, a new friend in Monserrat and her team.
A graceful host who welcomed us with warmth, securing us a seat almost immediately despite the absence of a reservation. The cuisine was nothing short of extraordinary—vibrant, full of depth, and delightfully light on the stomach. We indulged in the exquisite Pulpo and the sausage drenched in a garlic wine sauce. Each dish was a harmonious symphony of flavors, a true feast for the senses.
Went to La Catalana to celebrate my birthday. Not only the food there were delicious, the staff were very friendly, they are seriously the best host! They brought the warmth of Barcelona to their restaurant. I specifically loved the squid ink paella, sautée mushroom, pulpo (octopus), and the sausage with the garlic white wine sauce! Will definitely come back to visit again! It’s a nice place for a date, business casual dining, or friends gathering.
Small mom/pop restaurant with live music on Saturdays. The place is on the smaller scale but elegantly decorated. The hostess was really sweet, elegant dressed and she accommodated us quickly. It was full, the entire time we were there. Had the gambas, and mushrooms for a tapas and the black rice for dinner. The waiter was attentive and checked on us frequently and provided an excellent service. The rice was delicious. Definitely would come back.
The stuffed peppers are good. Mushrooms is good too. The spicy aoili is excellent.
Went for the first time to this place after son many yrs wanting to check it out . Went with a friend and the first impression was: Ambience is very nice dim lights cozy , but it gets loud because of the music (which is nice) but could be difficult to sustain a conversation . Food : very delicious small portions , very good quality tho. The jamón tapas plate $39 Wine: They only seel their house wine and also have beer selections and cocktails . Wine bottle $75. Service: busy specially on weekends . But staff was prompt and attentive . I would definitely make this my new spot since I live minutes away . Muy recomendado . Muy bonito ambiente cálido amigable , música amena aunque puede ser un poco ruidoso pero muy buen restaurante . Muy Español y las tapas y los platos fuertes muy ricos . Lo recomiendo al 100!
Loved the live music. Not too loud, really really really nice vibes. They definitely recommended far more food than we could eat. The tapas are a much bigger portion than expected. The waiter was absolutely lovely in recommending wines, food and dessert and overall it was really good ambience.
Went for dinner on a Friday evening—the ambiance was lovely with dim lighting and live music, perfect for a relaxed night out. We were a group of four and ordered a variety of tapas: croquettes, pan con tomate, tortilla, and fries with eggs—all tasty and well-prepared. The meal started off nicely with complimentary bread and olive oil. We then ordered the Paella Muntanya with succarrat, which was the biggest letdown of the night. At $60, the portion was surprisingly small and lacked the signature crispy rice at the bottom. Desserts were a highlight—the burnt cheesecake was outstanding, and the crema catalana was decent. Service was on the slower side but generally pleasant. The standout for us was the aioli—creamy, flavorful, and truly authentic. I had my eye on the fideuà, but skipped it after seeing the poor price-to-portion ratio with the paella. Overall, it was a good experience, but the paella really brought the evening down.
Stopped by on a busy night without a reservation. Was lucky to get the last two bar seats. Excellent service as always but the bar stools are far from comfortable. I had to sit sideways to not slide off continuously and my dinner mate had to lean her foot to try and balance all through dinner. No bar rail for a foot rest so it was a struggle. Will continue to visit but will make sure to reserve a table. The wait staff is amazing here.
Missing our Spain travel in 2019, searched Google for a Spanish tapas/wine restaurant in the Bay Area and this one popped up, so off we went and it didn't disappoint. Granted, they missed a couple of items we ordered, which makes me think that they will have fulfillment issues with large crowds. Tapas quality is a definite 4/5. Spanish wine selection is good, albeit with the typical Silicon Valley margins rather than the wine is cheaper than water pricing in Spain. Ah..... wishing I'm in Valencia, but in times of pandemic, this is good enough to bring me back to Barcelona. Wish they have sangria by the jug in addition to singles.
Food is amazing! Great flavor, well prepared and presented. But sooooo sloooow. And the waiter forgot to put in one of our orders. We have been here for almost 2 hours so far and have still not received our paella. Other dishes came out in drips and grabs. If you are going to eat here, you better give yourself at least 2 hours. And this was a Tuesday! And, a little weird that the paper towels in the bathroom rolled into straws. What's up with that?
The rice dish (arrossos) we ordered as the main entree was literally burnt. It was supposed to be for 2 people for a price tag of $27 / person and was the last thing on earth one should eat. I paid $54 for burnt rice !!! Even a simply cooked rice platter with some tomato sauce would have been better. The other 3 starters we got were good - so no complains on starters.
