Food is excellent. Probably the best Chinese food I have ever had. Every dish has its own distinct flavor, not like a lot of Chinese restaurants where all the food taste similar like they have been cooked all together or in the same pan. Great atmosphere elegant but a relaxed and friendly. The staff very attentive friendly and helpful. It’s a very pleasant experience. I recommend It to everyone.
I love this place. We just moved here from Texas and we got this when we were looking for our new apartment, and more recently in our new apartment! I got scallops the first time and sesame chicken the second time. We got cream cheese puffs the second time too and they were incredible! Seriously love this place so far!
This is only the second time that I have visited the Mandarin Gourmet Restaurant in 12 years. I had the combination fried rice and honey walnut shrimp. The food was very tasty, the waiter was very attentive and the atmosphere was kind on the eyes. The only negative was the hostess. She must have been having a bad day.
Amazing restaurant. went here all the time when i was younger, and it was my go to place for my B-day. they have a nice selection of food (however i do miss the candy banana. think it might have been removed of the menu) i usually stick to my favorites but all of it tasted good. the hot and sour soup is really good, not to cluttered with stuff like other restaurants iv been to. you get free tea (or at least i always believed it was free) when you order. sometimes the rice can be a little dry, but i'd prefer that over sticky and its not something that would bother me that much.
Doesn't look like much on the outside, but was surprised once walked in. Clean fast friendly service. Good place to have a quiet meal.
I saw this place on DoorDash and decided to place an order for pick up- I got an order of the fried shrimp and the shrimp fried rice. The estimated time on DoorDash was 30 minutes but 10 minutes after I placed the order I got a notification that it was ready :) so they are definitely fast and efficient. When I walked in I was politely greeted by their host and she was super quick and friendly to help me with my pick up order. From what I saw on the inside it looks very clean and well kept. The parking lot is spacious. I had no expectations going in there but after I tried their shrimp fried rice I was amazed at how yummy and flavorful it was! I’ve been to places where it doesn’t taste like anything but this place is definitely authentic/ the real deal when it comes to that. I wasn’t into the fried shrimp I ordered just because of the breading, maybe I just ordered the wrong thing but I will definitely be coming back again to get the fried rice again and to try something different on the menu. Overall I can’t complain about my experience and will definitely be returning!
This is one of our favorite restaurants. We have been coming here probably ~20 years. We always order our favorites and something new. Our favorites : Imperial Soup (for 2, plenty for 4 people), chicken in lettuce cups, tangerine beef, and dry sautéed string beans. And then usually a new dish to try.
Very nice traditional Restaurant that is family orientated. The food was good and plentiful. I would suggest that they chop up the peppers so the food can be hotter rather than the whole peppers, but other than that the flavor was great.
One of the best Chinese spots in the Bay! Always a go to when in the mood for Chinese & on the southside. I’ve never had anything here I didn’t like! Service is always so nice! Love coming here!! The portions are huge & served family style.
Best and most delicious Chow Mein ever, cooked to utter perfection with the utmost gorgeous texture.
Lunch specials are becoming harder and harder to find so when you find a place that not only has a lunch special but has it available 7 days a week (excluding holidays), it is worth a highlight! Mandarin Gourmet delivers with a 4 course lunch special that has a variety of entrée options. Entrées are served family style so the table can easily share dishes. The food comes quickly and the seating is comfortable (choice of booths or tables). The first course are some fried dough with a sweet red dipping sauce. Chinese chicken salad with a peanut dressing is usually served at the same time, followed by a hot and sour soup. Finally the entrée is served with a choice of steamed or fried rice. A fortune cookie rounds off the meal. On this visit, we had the Garlic Eggplant, Tangerine Beef and Honey Walnut Prawns. All were great!
Love this place for lunch. Smaller plates but still enough to share for two. Includes soup, salad, won ton strips with sweet and sour sauce, fried rice, hot tea and then you pick your entree. Food is always freshly prepared with delicious sauces that are truley Gourmet! Oh and you can eat there in about 30 min or sometimes less, why settle for a fast food joint when you can get Mandarin Gourmet.
One of the best Chinese food places in the area. Portions are generous. Service is pleasant. Mongolian beef is the best one I've ever tried.
This place never seems to disappoint, the food was delicious, the service friendly. I love to have General Tso's pan friend noodles, this dish makes a great sizzling sound when they add the sauce, meat, and vegetables. This is done right at your table, and tends to get the attention of other guests. You can be selective on what vegetables are in the dish, works out great if you dislike mushrooms like I do. I always add a serving of rice to the meal, as I feel it's a necessity and is not included. The hot and sour soup is also a great addition on a rainy day. They serve a complimentary hot tea, with every meal.

I have done take out twice now. We fell in love with garlic eggplant. They use the long Asian eggplants which come out firm not mushy. The flavor is also superior to the common eggplant you find in conventional supermarkets. I find the eggplant-y flavor too intense but these come out much milder. You have to go to an ethnic market for these. I know how to make these at home but it's a huge hassle. You pan or deep fry them first then sauté/stir fry. We also loved the lemon chicken which was seared/fried and you pour lemon sauce on top. Normally I expect the sauce already added to the fried chicken but they probably put the sauce on the side so the chicken survived takeout. The Mongolian beef tasted great but we felt it was under spiced. We did find some of the whole red chilies but even our Americanized tastebuds could have taken more. The white rice was nicely done. We were hoping for brown rice but they stuck with the classic. There was plenty of it and we were glad we only got one order for the two of us. The ubiquitous packets of soy sauce not in any way memorable. The yellow mustard was quite strong in the way horse radish is strong. Really cleaned the sinuses. All I can say about the fortune cookie is they don't live up to my childhood memories. Even the quality of the fortunes has deteriorated. We just skipped those. You do get a lot of food. The two of us split an entree and a veggie . We had to save some room for the eggrolls. Mom's eggrolls would blow these out of the water. They should be ashamed. A quality fry doesn't save an eggroll stuffed with cheap supermarket veg. Mom's eggroll recipe; For the stuffing Dried shiitake mushrooms rehydrated and sliced Mung bean sprouts , roots and head plucked Long stripes of pork sliced thin then stirfried and seasoned with soy sauce and Shiaoshing wine. Bamboo shoots sliced thin and long Eggrolls were invented to use up leftovers so you can add bit of what you like. But if you decide to stuff it with guacamole or pizza toppings... Don't call it an eggroll Don't tell me about it. And if you do tell me please strew some pillows strategically because I don't want a concussion when I faint. Used a beaten egg on the wrapper to hold the eggroll together. Pan fry in a wok. The oil level should slightly over 1/2 the eggroll. Fry to a light tan if you plan to reheat and fry again. Fry to a nice deep golden brown to serve immediately. Mom always used the thick eggroll wrappers because she over stuffed her eggroll. This gets you a rural eggroll. But you can use the thin ones so fashionable and citified. The order arrived very quickly courtesy of Uber Eats. They have a tight window between the order and delivery. Be prepared to receive it quickly.
We dined at Mandarin Gourmet in San Jose with a group of seven people. We ordered five main dishes to share family-style and soup for everyone. The food was excellent. Every dish was flavorful, well prepared, and nicely presented. Portions were generous and perfect for sharing, and overall the quality of the food really stood out. The only downside was the service. The staff was polite, but service was noticeably slow. Overall, a very good place for Chinese food. I would definitely return for the excellent food.
Came here with a larger group for an impromptu Christmas lunch, as our plans changed due to a storm. They took us right in and we had a wonderful lunch. The food and service were great. I've driven by this restaurant for years and happy I finally had a chance to visit. Thank you Mandarin Gourmet for saving our Christmas!
Have been going here for over 20 years. It's a core memory that my brother and I go here with our father. We used to go a lot more frequently in highschool but as adults we are living in different counties so we still go there occasionally but just not frequently like we did when we were kids. We are adults now in our 40s. Been going here since we were 13-14yr old. We went here a year ago or something. Still has great food. Might come again this week w my daughter. Always delivers good food to the table. Never disappointed.

Better than expected, after reading the reviews. No big thrill or disappointment, but good basics. I have to wonder if the competition among Chinese restaurants in this area is leading to fake reviews. Although there's room for improvement, the food was good, the hostess and server were polite, friendly, & efficient. Our group of 7 were seated in a side room, and I was worried that we might be forgotten, but we were well taken care of and the quieter room was appreciated. I thought it odd that the other large table in the room had a tablecloth and lazy susan in the middle, while ours was bare. The other table remained unoccupied, and as we arrived 45 min. before lunch closing (with reservation), I don't think they were expecting another large party. If you're not going to sit guests at the dressed table, I'd leave it bare too, as it feels a bit insulting to be seated at a bare table, when the dressed one is there. The food was good, I especially like the Honey Walnut Prawns. Large plump prawns, not too sweet. The vegetable noodle dish was disappointing as the noodles were all little short pieces, but it was still quite tasty.
Very good quality food in very nice setting. Enjoyed that. But quite pricey, especially the $2.25 per serving for routine white rice - usually included with each main dish most other places. Will return, however, because of tasty cooking of quality ingredients.
The good: all our dishes were tasty and well done on a Monday night. Esp. Crispy Garlic Eggplant. The bad: They clean up and stack chairs while you're still dining and the front entrance to the place is desolate looking. Ultimately, this was my most enjoyed visit over time and they could still use some pointers on creating a dining atmosphere!
The last time I ate here was back in the late 90's and we were in the neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon and decided to try again. The staff was friendly, the table service was quick and our order was on our table in no time! We thought to ourselves, either they have a lot of people cooking in the back or the food isn't fresh Our food was fresh and delicious so I'm thinking they have a lot cooks. It's good to know that this place doesn't disappoint after so many years! We'll definitely be returning!
I am a big fan of Mandarían Gourmet & was sadden to see the Cupertino location close so many years ago. So I consider it a treat whenever I get a chance to go visit & eat at the Santa Theresa location in San Jose with a friend. I highly recommend their lunch menu as well as their standard dishes and most especially recommend their chef specialties. The ambiance is nice & their staff is professional but friendly, which helps make me feel at ease. Over all the staff, location, & especialy the food provides for a nice dining experience. So although a drive from Mountain View, to me, it is well worth the extra effort to get there. Happy eating to all!!
I selected the Special A on the menu: it came with choice of soup, appetizers, and an entree. The appetizer was an egg roll, one fried shrimp, and soup was the Wonton soup. It was fulfilling but nothing spectacular. The shrimp had a pasty taste I didn't care for but the egg roll stole the show. It was crispy and delicious. For my entree: I had the Mandarian Chow Mein with a side of fried rice. It was good. Some of my noodles were burnt but it didn't take away from the flavor of it. They giving you large quantities of food. I ate 1/4 and had to get the rest to go. It was a decent meal for $30 bucks. I'll go again to try something different

We love this restaurant, and they are usually very accommodating with gluten-free options, but when I tried to call and order take out they were extremely rude and short when I asked for gluten-free options. I know that they have the ingredients for gluten-free, we order the same things every time... The lady on the phone was very quick to cut me off and hang up as well. We are very sad because like I said the food here is amazing and usually the service is as well. But now we will think twice and will probably go elsewhere.
I have been going to Mandarin Gourmet as well ordering to go food for over 20 years. My recent experience with the food has been hit and miss. I am compassionate to the difficult issues managing a food business in recent years however, when one pays $40+ for an appetizer and entree for the quality food experience that’s what they should receive. Pot stickers were too thick and gummy and the cashew chicken had an odd cornstarch after taste.
Friends raved about this place, but I thought it was meh. The Chinese Chicken Salad was overdressed, and just lettuce and noodles, not much chicken. The Mongolian beef was tough and meh. We sat in the front room, a/c kept going off so it was stuffy. The waiter kept leaning over the table. Maybe if we had been in the main room, with a smaller group, it would have been better. And maybe it was just an off night. Nice to have the separate room.
My family has been coming here for years, it is their go to place for Chinese food close to one of the houses. They are always friendly and get the orders correct, and the pricing is decent. It is a nice large restaurant that is pretty well done. We usually order take out however. It is decent Chinese food, and it always is hot and seems fresh. The problem is the quality of food to me. While, the food is always well prepared, it just never feels fresh. The sauces are usually a bit too heavily laid on and tend to be on the sweet side. If you're looking for a decent Chinese food meal that is better than Panda, then this is a good choice. If you're looking for a more gourmet experience, then I'd probably try elsewhere.
I’ve been coming here for years now, but unfortunately the prices are way too expensive. $141 for 3 people. The prices are driving us away because they aren’t reasonable. The quality of the food has been the same to me, so I’m not too sure why other reviews said it’s changed. Portions are still generous and more than enough! The ambiance is nothing special and the bathrooms need a lot of work. Behind the toilets were gross and the faucets are extremely outdated. This place probably has the best Chinese food I’ve ever! The staff are really nice and the restaurant always looks amazing! The food is always perfect and I have dined in and done take out! They are never skimpy on the servings. However I have noticed it is a smaller portion to go rather than eating there! If you are in the area check this place out for sure!
Love this restaurant sometimes they have there off days.. today was one of those days…. Opened at 11 but when we arrived cleaners where still mopping floors . The cleaning lady greeted us with a smile. The manager looked upset when she seen us and quickly turned around and told the lady not to leave the door open next time because people can walk in..she waved her hand at the lady and said just hurry up! She turned then turned to us and said give me a min they are still cleaning. So we waited 5 min and then she sat us. Wonton strips where cold and not crunchy like they usually are. Salad was ok (I’m usually obsessed with the salad I can eat mine plus my daughters ) my food was good I ordered the Mongolian beef w/fried rice My grandma ordered a shrimp dish …… shrimp still had poop in its tail. We told the waiter and he just looked at it and mumbled something very low took the plate and walked away….very odd. A apology would of been nice. I think it’s safe to say Grandma isn’t going to want to eat here again.

The interior of this restaurant is really beautiful, the food was so salty that I had to drink a lot of water.

I used to love coming here as a kid. The food was always very good and the restaurant looked nice. However, the owners have failed to make any changes to the business. The decor is painfully dated and the menu doesn't seem to have ever been updated. I feel like a lot of the food now is just a meat or vegetable fried or roasted and tossed with a sauce. Its just not enjoyable even though I wish this place still was.
Taste of food is pretty good, but service is really bad. Waiter semi-yells at you when you ask questions about the menu items. They don't make any changes or substitutions - e.g. soft tofu instead of fried tofu. THEY CHARGE FOR HOT SAUCE - $1 tiny little serving. There is no soy sauce on the table. Tea is free but they won't serve it to you unless you ask for. Meanwhile, the plates cost about $18-20/dish incl tax. At some point, no matter how good the food is (it's good, but not amazing), if the service isn't there, it's not worth it. Bummed because it used to be one of my go-to's growing up, but no longer.
Restaurant used to be excellent, but quality has really suffered in recent years. Often cornstarch slurry used to thicken sauces has been half cooked. And meat is tough. Very disappointing 😞 I keep giving it another chance every year or so, but it continues on a downward fall.
We have been going here as family since 20 years Today we had table reserved and arrived on time 7pm. We walked in and other front desk lady gave away our table to someone else as racial discrimination. This is not acceptable. I have pics. One lady was apologetic and other old lady who assigned table incorrectly did not care. s. We got 2 small tables joined and not what was reserved or asked for. We are very disappointed on Christmas Eve. Hope Manager sees this note and does something
I have gotten the same to go order here every couple of months for several years. The food was good and consistent. The last order was the last time I’ll order from here. The price has gone up substantially and the portions are all in smaller containers. The owners have obviously become complacent. Too bad.
My husband and I just ate dinner here and it was awful 😖. We ordered the orange chicken and it wasn't cooked through. The chow fun had a nasty after taste too. Paid way too much for a nasty dinner. We have had several successful lunches but never dinner again!

Kinda dirty and old place. The plates, cups do not look well washed, they feel little greasy. This is a no no. Only two people serving at the tables so they are pretty busy, staff always looked unhappy here. This place did not change for 22 years. Hope they remodel soon, and add more staff, and new appliances to wash stuff. Food tastes as always which is nice, to be able to come back to the same flavors.
Terrible food and terrible service. My husband and I came here for the first time after we saw the 4/5 stars review. If there was an option for negative stars I would choose that. The food beef brought out to us was raw, and there was no indication that the fried rice has peas or carrots in them on the menu, which my husband is allergic to. When we told the waiter, he reluctantly took back the food to get it done right. When the bill came we decided not to leave a tip since we were so poorly served and the hostess was rude to begin with. As we left politely , the waiter chased out after us saying that the $60 bill was not including tip and that he demanded that we tipped him. My husband and I were appalled by the demand. He was shouting at us in the middle of the parking lot saying that he would have taken what we didn't like off the bill. Mind you he had many opportunities to do so when he saw we barely touched the food because it was so disgusting. When my husband came back in to talk to the manager, she was rude and just said ok I'll talk to him later, and basically shooed my husband out the door. NEVER AGAIN.
This restaurant is taking advantage of customers. I have ordered in one month 3 separate times i ordered the exact food. Each time they increased my overall bill. I checked the prices on their sheet menus and online and did not match with my final payment. I understand the pandemic has put a crunch on restaurants but taking advantage of customers is unacceptable. Not going there again.
We ordered the lemon chicken, wor won ton soup, and a noodle special. It was all terrible. The chicken was greasy and dry all at the same time, and had no flavor. The sauce tasted like watery paint. Meanwhile, the noodle dish had deep fried noodles that were again greasy and fused together making it hard to eat. The sauce and toppings tasted of burnt rubber. The soup broth had no flavor, the veggies were still crunchy, and the wonton meat tasted off. This meal was not cheap and even the fortune cookie was bland. Super sad because I had a hankering for Chinese food and was excited to give this place a try. Will not be coming back.
One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Lamb was waaay salty, egg roll had oil running out of it, beef on a stick only had one taste that wasn't very palatable. There weren't enough napkins to even try to pick up and eat the spare ribs. Service was poor and the dining room was cold. Stay away! Far, far away!
The place is a dungeon, no windows. This place feels like a bank vault that was converted to a restaurant. We used to go to their Cupertino location, it was better, but closed now. The food items were a hit or a miss. The menu here is also a hit or miss, only the kung pao chicken and a few other dishes are ok, other dishes lack flavor and contain way too many vegetables in a meat dish, eg: Hunan chicken. Worst is the waiter, a chubby guy, there are 2 waiters here, the other guy is very friendly and cordial. The chubby one is always angry and has a chip on his shoulder, maybe he is over worked but that is not an excuse to be unprofessional to customers. He never smiles, in our last visit, he was rude and appeared angry. Avoid this place and go elsewhere for a better ambience and culinary experience. I hope this place shuts down too, it is mostly empty anyway. The lunch special is the only reason people go here. If the owners are reading this, fix your staff's attitude and get that waiter I mentioned some training on communication and customer service. Useless place.
Food was great, came out quick. Service after we got our food was horrible, they never came back to check on us, no refills or napkins. Service was definitely given to the ones chosen, and we were one of the tables that ordered the most food there and still weren't given us any service.
The waiter was sooooo rude. He threw the pen in front of me to sign!!! He was so inpatient and rejected to customize my food. He was so bad tempered!! The food was awful but if they were nice I would not have left this review.
Noodle soup like instant noodle — soup color brown taste suck no flavor. Chow mein is so greasy, small portion for the charge. The server is very rude, not friendly at all.
Enough is enough. Expensive food made with horrible, cheap ingredients. Dishes were overcooked, tasteless or cloyingly sugary. Service was mediocre. Please have some pride and ethics in what you make and serve—customers deserve much better for these prices.
Staff so rude not helpful at all it was our fist time we ask for some recomendations and she told us that come when we know what we want. It was a simple question we drove so far for nothing
$85 for 4 items. Place has good food but serving size is a rip off. They serve for the amount of people. 2 people and your plates have very little food but they still charge you family price. Pot stickers, pork fried rice, sweet and sour pork, mongolian beef. Mongolian beef was $25 for like 10 pieces of meat and a bunch of onions. They going out of biz soon with these prices 20 years down the drain.. will not be back ✌️
