Opinions de Sushi Koya San Jose
Mmmmmm...great new place near Almaden Twin Theatres (Cinelux). A little higher priced that other Japanese restaurants but the experience and convenience was worth it! Loved the chicken Katsu Bento Box. $19.99 but comes with a lot of food! And the rolls....mmmmm...! Will definitely return. 👍
Great fish. Excellent service. My new number 1 sushi spot in this San Jose south area. Yooooo This is the new spot. South Sj! Even with Covid. Their sushi is hands down the best in the area. The smooth buttery texture of the fish is all there. The fresh taste of the fish is something I have had difficulty getting from sushi spots during this time. But no more! Their rolls are all good too. Just had an order with 6 or 7 rolls and sashimi to go. And even after a car ride home, it was still bomb and fresh. Thank you Sushi Koya!!! Def my go to spot now.
A really nice place. First time here with friends and the service was good, very kind lady attending us. She recommended the flaming dragon (2nd and 3rd pic) and deep fried California rolls(1st pic). We ordered other types as well, but these are the pictures of the ones I got, all were very delicious and would a 100% recommend to all. A nice place to come to overall.
First let me start by saying I finally found a new favorite restaurant! Not just my favorite Japanese restaurant, but my favorite restaurant period! My friend and I arrived on a Wednesday evening for dinner and found only one couple in the restaurant. When we first pulled into the parking lot I wasn't sure what we were walking into. The reviews give this place a 4.5 stars, but from the outside it's a little deceiving. Very simple and sort of old looking building, parking is a little limited but sufficient. Boy am I glad we didn't judge a book by its cover! I love when I'm greeted at the door by the all too familiar "Irasshaimase!" Something most places aren't doing anymore, but Sushi Koya did not let me down! That was the first sign I was in a proper sushi restaurant. I found the place to be cozy and quiet, would be absolutely perfect for a date or a small get together all the same. The bathrooms are outside in the back and were kept clean and well stocked. They were well staffed for being a Wednesday and they were very friendly, clean, and courteous. We wanted for nothing, quick service and very attentive! Now on to the food, what everyone really wants to know about in a review! The miso soup was nice and warm and was gratis like it was back in the day before you had to order it with your food. Again traditional and authentic to me. Good selection of beer and definitely a variety of saki, which we most certainly partook in! Started with two traditional rolls Alaska and Philadelphia, the salmon was super fresh and made for a perfect starter. Moved onto a larger roll, we ordered the Mr. Unagi, a California roll with unagi loin on top. Let me tell you, this is now my all time favorite roll! The blend of the warm unagi and the cold California roll makes for the perfect blend of temperatures and mouthfeel. I couldn't stop eating it, get to it fast because once it cools down the mouthfeel changes. It's still excellent once cooled but it is absolutely next level when it's hot and fresh. The Mr. Unagi was so good we had to order another one, two of the same roll is something I've never done before but it was that good. The second time around was just a good as the first, loved every bite! To round out the meal my friend ordered the Hamachi Kama, Grilled yellow tail collarbone served with ponzu sauce. It was cooked to perfection and the cut was the perfect amount of fatty that makes for a moist fish. A few bones is normal, and this only had a couple and that's it. The dipping sause was amazing, not sure but it looked and tasted like house made and was the perfect accompaniment to the hamachi kama. This is listed on the menu as an appetizer but made for an excellent last dish as well. To finish the meal they brought out a delicious little half orange cut into little pieces, placed into an orange peel hand made bowl, and topped with cream. It was light, tasted like a creamsicle or orange julius, and was an ideal way to end the meal. A little "thank you" from the restaurant. They show attention to detail in everything they bring to the table it seams, from beginning to end. All this amounts to one of my favorite experiences in a restaurant in quite some time. This is way I rated them 5 stars, I truly would have given them 10 stars if I could! I'll be back time and again, please don't ever change Sushi Koya you're perfect the way you are!!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sushi Koya never disappoints! We arrived right when they reopened at 5:00 pm and were the first ones there. The service was incredibly fast, and the food was amazing as usual. I absolutely love their Honeymoon Rolls – the mango is always fresh, unlike many other sushi places. Their signature Battleship is simply delicious. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for top-notch sushi!
Best place in South Bay for sushi. We have tried them all.... Nothing stands close. Who else gives you all this sushi, drinks, appetizer, soups, and is less than $100? Only the amazing Sushi Koya. Try anything on their menu, it's amazing. The bento boxes have sushi themes. The "boat" is served on a white plate so it doesn't look as expensive as the place down the road... Because this place is the place to eat good sushi for cheap. We love it!!! Tell Kim we said hi and ask for the special cheesecake dessert with green tea ice cream...
My favorite local place. The service here is always top notch. I am always greeted with a warm hello and free hot Miso soup. The Sashimi is always the best available and well bled. Bento boxes are a meal for two in my opinion. The Hamachi Kama is the best I have ever had. Try the Dancing Albacore! I just wish they had oysters. 😏
This place can take my money! The service was EXCEPTIONAL. I was seated and seconds later I was already served water and miso soup. The hosts were lovely. The Korean BBQ from the bento fell right off the bone and the Dragon Roll was such a cool experience. I appreciate how well maintained and clean the location is. This is by far my favorite restaurant in the area...my expectations were beyond exceeded, thank you!
My first time trying out this place with my little sister. The food was delicious! We loved the lion king and we also got a bento of the teriyaki salmon with salmon sashimi. Update: I came back to try more sashimi so got the platter with all of the different type of fishes. I also got toro and scallops on the side since I wanted to try those as well. It was really delicious! As always, service is wonderful! I never have to wait long to be seated. They accept all payments and friendly staffs!
My fiance and I are used to crappy rolls from the Midwest where each person orders at least 2 rolls to feel satisfied. That is not the case here! We ordered only 3 and had to take half of it home. The portions are great, the quality is excellent, the service is nice, and the tea is actual Japanese green I think; it's definitely loose leaf, not tea bags. I definitely recommend this place!
Excellent restaurant! Incredible staff and great prices to go along with great food. I'm not a sushi eater. My wife daughter and I split the teriyaki beef and chicken dinner to go along with the tempura dinner. More than two meals left over. Maybe the most tender beef I've ever had and I love to smoke beef myself. Just an incredible lively atmosphere. We arrived early for dinner, when we left it was packed. We were never rushed to make room for more. All of the staff was attentive and courteous. Just s great all around meal. Thank you for your service! I would say it was a hidden gem but the crowd says it wasn't that hidden.
Came all the way down to SanJose to get a car and that fell through so we decided to get sushi. Found Sushi Koya and the food was ooiisshhii! Watch out for the wasabi, the owner warned me but I told him, I could handle it. I will definitely be back!
Great sushi! 🍣 so many options and fairly priced
My favorite Japanese restaurant! My boyfriend and I love coming here since the food is so yummy and the staff is amazing. Everything is delicious and well priced, it's worth stopping by any time we are in San Jose.
I absolutely love this place. The servers are a blast! Wednesday night 99 cent saki is a great excuse to eat fabulous sushi, laugh, and enjoy life!
Lots of options here. Was here for a small party so we ordered 10+ rolls and the sashimi platter. Every single roll was delicious. Food was seriously so fun and enjoyable!
This place is a hidden gem with a cozy vibe and tasty food. It's my favorite place to get agadashi tofu in particular! Also, the waitstaff have been lovely each time I've gone; I enjoy being able to dine in when I get the chance. Parking can be slightly limited, but I typically don't have a problem finding something.
Had a very tasty lunch here!! Probably the best sushi we have had in the bay area. All ingredients were fresh, they had a strong attention to flavor and detail. Loved their double fried rolls and special rolls. We will absolutely be going back again.
The sushi at this restaurant is truly exceptional. Every piece was expertly crafted and bursting with fresh, delicious flavor. I especially loved the sashimi, which practically melted in my mouth. The ambiance is cozy and intimate, and the service was top-notch. Overall, a fantastic dining experience!
Ooooh Myyyy Gooosh this place has such fresh sashimi!!!! Like fingerlicking pieces of fish just melting in your mouth 🤤🤤 we also ordered Monster roll that is freaking amazing!!! I think I got full after 3 pieces 😆 You need 3 people to finish that roll. Definitely recommending this place. It small but very cosy with great service and wonderful quality ❤️🔥🫶🏻
Honestly the best sushi spot in town. I always get the bento box—everything is so freakin good and has the biggest bang for your buck. The rolls are stuffed with meat, the bbq ribs are mouth watering good, the salad is incredible with the sesame seed sauce they give, and the Miso soup is 10/10 delicious.
Our favorite local sushi place. The sushi is delicious, always clean, and friendly staff.
Come for good flavors and service. Great options, but not great for top-quality fish. No toro or specialty cuts. If you know you're coming for yummy and filling food, you'll be extremely satisfied
Great management and staff. Always welcoming, kind and attentive. There are many many rolls to choose from and the raw is always fresh. Decent prices. And Bento for the kids. Recommend.
This sushi spot is typically busy. The food is always good and the service as well. Even takeout is good.
This place is excellent. Sushi is fresh and tastes great. We will definitely visit again, and often. It is now our favorite sushi spot.
Best sushi in Willow Glen. Great service great energy. One of the staff, Yooei, has the most magnetic personality and has kept us coming back. You’d think he owned the place the way he took care of everybody
Exceptional sushi. Have eaten here several times. The sushi and rice is always great compared to other restaurants nearby. The Kara age was also good, and they provide a nice miso soup with every order. Can be a bit tricky to get in and out of parking here with the nearby drive thru. Food is well worth it though. The rice was freshly made and delicious.
Great sushi place at an off-beat location! Food was great, Service was fantastic and efficient and prices very reasonable. We liked almost everything that was served. The flaming dragon, dancing albacore, and assorted sashimi were absolutely great! Other rolls were really good, and loaded with fish. The only thing that we didn't like was fried calamry, was very dry and chewy. I will say the food is reasonably priced compared to what you're getting. The location is the opposite of fancy - next to McDonald's and some commercial area, and parking can be a bit of a challenge if the place is busy (which it usually is)
I love this place! Their classic sushi rolls are perfect and their specialty rolls are great. The Garlic Roll was delicious and the 2424 is massive. The 49er roll here is great. It has the perfect ratio of fish and lemon, I haven't had it better anywhere else. The sushi rice here is sweeter than other restaurants which I also like. The service was friendly and fast and they brought us water with lemon and miso soup before taking our order. Can't wait to visit again!
The server was so kind even if we came in a bit late. No sign of attitude at all. They’re located in an awkward area, so parking is a bit of a challenge which is easily covered by the parking lot over by McDonald’s. Hot tea was free! Miso soup is delish and BBQ mussels has a slightly different taste than what I usually get from other sushi places. My tempura shrimp and vegetables was perfectly crispy. Reached over to try a roll off of my son’s plate and it was fresh as it can be. I will order my go to saba dinner plate next time because yes, I’ll be coming back here whenever I crave a Japanese meal.
My new favorite local sushi place. Beautiful presentation and delicious taste. Hot the sushi platter, sushi and sashimi, and flaming dragon roll for two people. Just enough. By the way, their miso soup is also really good it’s a standalone building and the area is a little divey but inside is nice, clean. Service is fast and friendly.
Their tempura looked amazingly big but when my husband took a bite, the shrimp was so skinny and small. So I think they used too much flour and breading for the tempura. The salmon bento is what I ordered I love love love their veggie sushi.
Super cute and cozy place. The food is very delicious. They have a lot of options for sashimi and cooked rolls. Very nice atmosphere. The service is wonderful. Food come out fairly quickly.
Absolutely delicious. The tempura was the best we've had recently, and the ankimo was nicely presented and very good. The sashimi was plentiful and of very high quality. Prices were also decent. I've eaten at Japanese restaurants all over the Bay Area and this is one of the better ones.
Great place to get sushi in San Jose! I ordered sashimi and the fish is fresh like and flavorful. Pretty pricey but worth it. Place gets packed real quick so get there early or you'll be waiting. I'd definitely would go back for more!
This place is such a hidden gem for getting sushi in the Bay Area! Unlike the other sushi restaurants nearby, Sushi Koya has short wait time, amazing pricing, large portions, and fresh ingredients! In particular, we really enjoyed the chirashi and the sashimi. They’re delightfully delicious, especially the herring with roe. On the other hand, we’ve also tried the sushi rolls and thought they were mediocre.

Great cozy atmosphere, very quick with the service. Can be a little busy, but it's to be expected. I really liked the sushi with mango slices. A neat touch!

Not the most romantic, but festive decor. We've been here at least 10 times and have NEVER been disappointed by the food! Usually get maki rolls, try a different specialty roll every time, tempura is FRESH, bento is most bang for your buck imo! Service is fast and almost always with a smile :) keep an eye out for their evening alcohol specials (99c hot sake on Wednesdays)

This is the second time I’ve been here, the first time it went just fine but this time was different. I ordered number 14 off the menu with salmon sashimi, and it was delicious. But about 8 hours later I received symptoms of food poisoning and/or salmonella, and it was not a pleasant experience at all. Not going to bring my star rating that low because the food was delicious both times I visited, but just be wary.
The food was delicious but was more expensive than what we're accustomed to. My wife and my friend enjoyed their chirashi. For the first time, my Autistic son tried Saba dinner plate and he liked it. The flaming dragon was awesome to look at but I needed to order another dish to get my fill.
Pros: very nice and attentive staff, good selection of food (classic, cooked, veggie, special), nice atmosphere, good sized rolls Cons: restroom is outside the restaurant, flaming dragon was way too greasy and sauced that is not expected or pleasant for sushi rolls. Flaming dragon came with no sides if wasabi or ginger Tip: you can ask for less sauce inside/on the flaming dragon. I learned it at the end!
Great food. Extremely slow service. They may have forgotten my order and I had to ask for chopsticks.
Was busy, but not overly busy. Staff was plentiful and running thier booties off. My daughter loved her California Roll. I got the Get Lucky roll, which was pretty loosely rolled. But it tasted pretty good. I wouldn't order it again, though. I prefer a tighter roll. I would go back and try other rolls.
I wanted to love it... but there was something about the red fish (tuna? Seasoned salmon?) On top of my Twofer and included in another roll that was not my favorite. I think it was the texture more than anything. That said, staff was nice and it is a comfortable place to dine.
Big portions... big rolls... Flaming Dragon Roll was ok, sauce was a little off mybe due to the aluminum foil being lit on fire... the Korean Barbecue Short Ribs was my favorite part of the meal... tempura was perfectly cooked. Service was good.
The fish was pretty good. Rice on the nigiri had too much vinegar. Costs about the same as better places do so not a great value
The only reason that I did not give the food a five-star is because some of the rolls are not rolled tight and fall apart. As for the atmosphere, it is a small place and very crammed in with tables and chairs. Therefore, it can be noisy. The service is excellent and the taste of the food is exceptional. It is a must-try restaurant.
The food was alright, pretty average. The AC was broken, so I think that might have contributed to the sashimi we ordered being kind of warm feeling. The staff were all super friendly and welcoming, no complaints there. Overall, I'd probably give them another try, when all of their equipment is working.
Went a Sunday. Cost with tax and tips 40$ for 2. Not the cheapest, but fare price. The place is modest with legged fans, a single restroom which is accessible from outside and a menu with liquid papers. However, service is excellent. The waitress came 4 times for water and asked if we wanted more sushis. I am not giving g 5 stars because I would expect cheaper price for the look the restaurant exhibit.
Fresh, flavorful, and consistent! Sushi Koya is always a treat. The sushi is delicious, and the garlic edamame is one of my absolute favorites. Great spot when I’m craving something satisfying and reliabl
Great sushi here! Be sure to put your name on waitlist when you arrive. There was a line when we arrived, it was a Friday around 7pm. The restaurant parking wasn't great, but we parked in the lot next door where the movie theater is and walked right over. Decor looks kinda dated, tables were clean. I didn't need to use restroom, so no comment on that. Service was great, lots of items to choose from on the menu. Once we were seated, everyone got water and miso soup. The rolls we had were delish!
Blue collar sushi at it's very best. 🍣 California 🥐 roll is mid, more like crab salad. Great vibe neighborhood joint with a solid B overall Excellent value and sprite service
The waitress warned us that the large sushi rolls are really big and we didn’t think much of it but the “large” sushi rolls were some of the largest I have ever seen! Definitely should experience. Also got a bento where the salmon was a bit dry. They were nice to give out miso soup to the little one.

The sushi is not bad, but not special either. A decent casual sushi joint but I don't see the 4.5/5 Yelp rating. Some cuts (e.g. salmon, hamachi) are quite good quality. The others are just okay. They use butterfish/escolar in their chirashi :( Overall the Chirashi is more worth it than the sushi platters though. Nice service.
Food is served and presented really well and looks appetizing. Staff was pleasant. The soup could certainly be served warmer. The appetizers were served with the entrees so service could do better I guess. Place looks very different from the outside and I can see people turning away because of that. Place is not that big inside, they have enough parking.
Considering this is a sushi restaurant in California it should’ve been much better. The servers were good although I don’t think they knew what they were doing very well. I asked for a salmon skin hand roll and instead they brought a salmon skin roll. To make it worse most of the salmon skin was uncooked which made the whole thing unpleasant to the point that I only had one or two bites of it and left all the rest. And when I ordered it, I asked if they had shiso or yamagobo because I like them in salmon, skin and hand rolls. The waitress said no they did not have either one. But she apparently did not know what they were because another dish came with she shiso a garnish, and the salmon skin roll that they brought had yamagobo in it already. The nigiri was fine for the most part, but not great. But being California, I expect more from a sushi restaurant.
My experience didn't match all the great reviews on here. The mixed tempura I got was fine when it came to the vegetables, but the shrimp still had raw batter in the center. The tempura dipping sauce was also kind of... more watery... and less flavorful than what I would expect. I also got two pieces of saba nigiri, and it was not as fresh as I am used to. A little bit softer texturally than usual, likely an indication that it was still fine but not as fresh. Finally their signature roll tasted pretty good, but the spicy tuna in it had a bit of the cooked tuna flavor profile. Possibly a sign it also wasn't as freshly made. The overall flavor of the roll was satisfying however, and I think I would stick to trying their rolls in any possible future visits. Finally the service was really friendly and considerate so good on them for that. Overall I think this place is budget sushi. Probably not the freshest stuff but if all you care about is big fat tasty rolls covered in sauce and tempura fried flakes then the value is here.
photos on the menu looked like great value but turned out the price was reasonable because the sushi was cut super thin. don't be fooled that there's "20pieces" of fish on the chirashi bc each piece is more like a half piece. tasted pretty fresh tho. friendly staff but service was kind of slow even tho it wasn't busy. Ama ebi 2 piece was MP ($15) and so not worth it... the shrimp was so thin that it was falling apart. could barely taste the shrimp.
Ngl idgaf if the atmostphere is bomb or something, it’s only about the food, and the food here had a lot to be desired. Maybe i just got the wrong order, but honestly, it was sort of underwhelming. Okay wait. That’s i’m kind of exaggerating. What i mean is for 18$ + tax + tip i would not spend 18$ for what i ate. I wish i had went to get chinese takeout for 15$ than spend 18$ plus tip and tax on a plate of just okay sushi. I’ll try coming back in the future, but if it disappoints again, i’ll drop my 3 star to a 2. Side note, my brother thinks the chicken Katsu is bang for your buck, it’s like a 7/10 but a lot of it. So what u will with that information.
I would say this is a solid sushi place but not our favorite. Pros: Inside had a nice vibe and decor. Very creative rolls and big menu. Workers were nice, service was good, & fast food. Cons: The rolls were huge (stuffed with fake crab) and the fish was thin. We got the flaming dragon, too big, drowning in so much sauce you really couldn't taste the fish. Outside is a bit sketchy and parking was difficult.
I came here for lunch on a weekday right when they just open. There was only 1 waitress but service was really good and quick. She was friendly and attentive. I got a free miso soup to start after I order. The soup was good. I ordered softshell crab for appetizer and 3 rolls: Super California, Mr. Unagi. I forgot the name of the last roll but it had raw tuna and salmon. I was excited but the food unfortunately was a disappointment for me. The breading on softshell crab had a good crunch but it didn't have any flavor, very bland. All the rolls were just okay. I didn't like their unagi sauce, the texture was different from all the other restaurants I've ever eaten at. Great service but food not so much :(
The first time I ordered here it was awesome! Sushi roll was well made, deep fried to perfection. It tasted fresh! The kalbi was ok. They only give 4 pieces in the lunch bento. I love the salad dressing. Everything tasted fresh and well made. But in my subsequent visits it has gone down in quality in how the roll is made. The filling was not evenly distributed so parts of the sushi was missing ingredients. And the roll looked sloppy. The salmon bento was the worst! It was cut weird, and very very very dry. Needless to say I didn't finish it. The 3rd time I only ordered the fried sushi roll as redemption and it was disappointing. I wonder if they do that on purpose, knowing it's my order they could care less 🤔 One can tell since I order a specific sushi a particular way every time. I would say try them but it's just inconsistent.

I don’t usually leave a review or at all, even if it is really bad. Well, my favorite place here that I’ve visited for years, has extremely disappointed me so much that I just can’t justify a next visit ever again. Ordered at 4:50pm(opens at 5pm) for pickup at 5:30pm I’ve ordered: Garlic Roll Nigiri Seared Salmon x 2 Nigiri Yellow Tail x 2 Nigiri SkipBack x 2 First off, the rice was taken out too early. If you have a rice cooker, you’ll know how it tastes and feel when the moment you take it out after it finishes. It felt soggy with a bit of crunch. That goes for both the roll and nigiri I’ve ordered. I think rice is just as important if not more than the fish itself.. Secondly, the nigiri I’ve ordered did not taste fresh. There is no savory-ness and is really bland. If I were to close my eyes, I couldn’t tell you which is what... Rice was bland and did not taste sweet like sushi rice should. I’m sure the roll and nigiri are from the same rice, undercooked. Thirdly, how old are leftover sushi from earlier the day??? Why is the tuna so dark?? Shouldn’t this “skipjack” tuna be a bit red-brown??? Sad to say but for $80, the rice could have at-least been better. I just can’t see myself visiting a place I’ve liked for years that did extremely poor on this delivery of sushi. Just don’t order or be here right when they open, you’ll most likely get their scrap and rushing. No matter what price range you pay($5 a piece per nigiri), quality won’t be checked and you’ll just have to be lucky to get fresh quality ones. I’ve had bad nigiri but not this rice-bad. Not sure what happened in today’s order or if it is just bad timing, but I’ve had better in previous visits(10+) and enjoyed every visits besides today.
I ordered the chicken katsu and it had some of the worst meat quality I have ever seen. It was fatty and gristly. My sister ordered one of the fried sushi rolls and it came with a spicy sauce. Had she known that it came with it she would have asked them to leave it off because she has a stomach ulcer, but it was not listed on the menu. When we told our server about it, he condescending told us that we should have just asked them to leave the sauce off despite confirming that it was not listed on the menu.
Small old taco bell or something. Service super poor. Food quality was lacking too. Restroom are out back. Won't ever come back. I felt safer eating am/pm food. More sanitary too. I'd also get someone to refill my water and pay attention to when I need to pay. Not here. I could of walked off without paying. Seems staff just doesn't care.

We ordered the dragon roll and paid extra for real crab. It tastes so awfully dry, and we figured the "real crab" is actually crab floss instead of fresh crab meat. We were very upset about this. The waiter/waitress explained how normally they mix the fake crab meat with mayo but they don't use mayo with "real crab". They were kind and nice, but this explanation triggered me because it sounds like using mayo is the way to make food taste good, and this shows how they don't take food seriously. Btw the other roll we ordered is soak in mayo. My boyfriend doesn't mind it, but as an Asian, I was really embarrassed. They kindly waived the crab item from our bill but I really rather pay more for a pleasant dining experience. Without a question, we would never come back to this place. And for anyone who knows enough about what good food is like and cares enough about food, please do not waste your time here.
Seems like great sushi but zero customer service or manners. Employees tried to tell me I showed up too early for pickup order even though it was 10 minutes after their system told me to come pick up. Very frustrating experience and they refused to expedite my order or help. Just told me to wait more. Not the way a business should be run when charging high end sushi prices. Very disappointed
Tried this place for the first time and it was bad! We ordered the Sashimi platter and most of the fish was bad quality. Sashimi should be a high quality cut but it wasn't. There was a fishy smell to almost all of the fish and the cuts were small. On top of that it took a while to get our food. We wont be back.
The oysters smelt spoiled and looked dark/ not cleaned properly. It was busy but we were not checked on once during our meal besides to take our order and pay. The bathroom is outside through their back door. Not worth the price. The ambiance was not at all soothing. They played pop music throughout the time we were there. Very disappointed
