Opinions de BBQ Patio Grill San Juan
I was in the food business for 20 years so I have some perspective. This was the best bbq imaginable. The citrus pork ribs were smoked to perfection, flavorful and succulent. The brisket was tender and very moist. For sides I had the Mac n cheese, scrumptious and the honey butter cornbread, seriously the best cornbread I've ever eaten. All and all, food quality and service, the only reason I'm giving GW five stars is because there aren't 6 or 10 stars to give. Oh, yeah I almost forgot, GW is ranked the 5th best bbq in Texas.
This is great Barbecue and worth the wait in line. I have never been disappointed. The meat cutters are friendly, patient, and very helpful. The staff overall is great and strive to make your experience wonderful. I can't say enough about how good this group of people Barbecue proteins and the sides will not disappoint.
This was on my list of BBQ places wanting to visit for a while. I finally made the trip and time to go. On arrival noticed a line at the entrance but also noticed the line was moving and it didn’t take long to get inside. We ordered brisket, pork belly, coleslaw, potato salad, and beat salad. This came with onions, pickles, bread, and a special sauce for the pork belly. The brisket was juicy, tender, and stood on its own without bbq sauce. It had a smooth smoky flavor and was a delight in a sandwich with pickles & onions. The pork belly drizzled with the special sauce was heavenly. I could not believe the flavors I was experiencing. The sides I thought were going to be run of the mill but this also surprised me. The coleslaw was a tangy vinegar and spicy base. It included pickled mild jalapeños that made this stand out with excellent flavor. The potato salad was a mustard base with its own signature taste but darn good. The beat salad was my favorite side and was crazy good. The service here was excellent as staff went out of their way to help and made sure we were good. The decor was of a typical BBQ place that was comfortable and relaxing. Overall this place is a must if you are into BBQ! Easy 5 star review. 👍
The brisket is excellent whether sliced or in a sandwich. No sauce required! I did try the sauces for this review and found all three were very good, one for every pallet. The beans maybe a bit over done with additional meats but the flavor was fabulous. Like so many others have commented, the cornbread is to die for! This was our first visit and were personally spoke to about all their offerings on other days. We are looking forward to trying the fried chicken. I will give updates as we try additional offerings. In conclusion I highly recommend this BBQ as the place to go in the RGV. I have been to Snows, Blacks and others and would rank GW's right up there with the best!
Delicious bbq and great sides! They also have very fun and interesting specials. Definitely the best in the valley.
I recently ate at GW’s BBQ, and it was absolutely delicious—but beyond the food, the service truly stood out. Everyone was so personable, welcoming, and attentive, which made the entire experience feel special from start to finish. The presentation was beautiful, thoughtful, and elevated—something you don’t always see, but really appreciate. I love supporting restaurants here in the Valley that are constantly evolving, growing, and finding ways to stand out, and GW’s BBQ is doing exactly that. Amazing food, fantastic service, and a great overall experience. Highly recommend! Oh by the way the cornbread is soooo good
Came to GW’s BBQ for the first time & to celebrate my mothers birthday. We were amazed of the deliciousness of the food. Hot fresh and ready! :) Brisket was super soft, moist and flavorful. Natural waters and tea were fresh. All sides were super good. This bbq place is not like others where you need to drain your meat with sauces to get some flavor. Noah, Darrel & Alex are very attentive with great customer service. Definitely was worth coming ahead of time before it opened. Must try and I assure you will come back again. 😃
Just ate there today, close to closing time at 4 pm. Staff from beginning to end could not have been nicer, and that's saying something because they had to have been exhausted with as hard as they were all working. This is the best barbecue we've ever had. Best fried chicken, too. I don't say that lightly, as I've had bbq and fried chicken from all over the US (Georgia, Memphis, Carolinas, etc.), including some of the best bbq from all over Texas. We love bbq. We order the Texas Two Step (brisket, ribs, and sausage, with 2 sides), and added 2 pieces of fried chicken. We ordered potato salad and the jalapeno popper grits for our sides. I really wanted those grits, having lived in the South for a long time, and they were incredibly well flavored. The meal was perfectly balanced between the meats and the sides. Oh, and their sides are not what you usually get at other bbq places, where you have to ration it because it's a tiny container. Here their sides are big and packed with phenomenal flavor. They were kind enough to also let us sample their squash casserole, which was really, really good. And coolest of all was them offering Kool Aid!! It's probably for the kids, but us grown up kids enjoy it, too. The brisket was just ridiculously good. Crazy tender, perfectly moist, and they have it down to a science. The sausage was really good and very flavorful (we got the Lockhart sausage because they were sold out of the other sausages). The ribs were our favorite, and we had to split the last one because we both wanted it. You know it's great when you're waiting for the other person to finish their half so that you can eat your half! We could only eat about half of the meal because we were in food comas with meat sweats after. It was sooooo good. It was funny to watch so many people just sitting there in la-la land after they finished they're masks. Before leaving, I went back up front to thank all of the staff, and ended up meeting the owner and talking with him for a bit. He doesn't like to waste food, so if there is food left over, he has a program where they distribute it to the needy. How cool is that?! They also have seasonal menus here, which is really cool. That offers us patrons plenty of variety to coincide with the phenomenal meat staples. Get here early, because they start selling out of items around 2 pm. By the time we were going through the line at 3:30, they were sold out of a lot, which to me is a very good sign of how good the food is going to be. We will be going back. A LOT!!
1015 and 15th in-line. By 1050 it was 50 deep and stayed that way. The lean brisket alone is better than Goldees, Burnt bean, and way better than Leroy and Lewis. I wouldn’t be surprised if they become #1 in four years. Worth the travel. If you are traveling down 281 watch your speed as star troopers are ready to give tickets.
This is as good as it gets in Texas. I’ve eaten at an handful of excellent bbq restaurants in Texas, but GW’s had the best food AND the best service. Absolutely amazing food and friendly service. Ribs might be the best I’ve ever had. Brisket equaled the best I’ve ever had. Turkey was to die for. Sausages were incredible. I’d also like to say that I loved the spicy bbq sauce. Next time I’ll buy a bottle. I got there at 10:00 am Thursday morning and was first in line. I checked out the pits and talked to other people in line. At least 3 of the workers came to talk to me and seemed genuinely interested in where I came from and my opinions on Bbq. After sitting down I also talked to employees who were helpful and interested in my opinions on the food. I will be back for sure.
I mean this sincerely when I say I wish I could give more stars. Not only was the food and service second to none, I got the opportunity to meet the owner George. He is truly the master of his craft. He took the time to tour me through the operation and to meet some of his staff. The pride he has in them and his product is equally matched in each individual boasting about the product, preparation, and presentation. This is an extraordinary experience with amazing people and the best bbq I’ve ever had! Try the chicken fried brisket, you will not be disappointed.
My wife and I just had a most incredible first visit. We are from San Antonio and have driven by many times and have never stopped, while visiting family. So glad we finally did. Have always heard rumors of them running out of meat. But today was our day. The brisket is so tender and juicy. The turkey is awesome and moist. Roasted Garlic sausage so delicious.
This is the best BBQ place I've ever gone to. The brisket was on point. It was smoked to perfection. We got the Texas bucket which had a little bit of everything and it was all amazing. Pork belly, ribs, turkey, brisket, and sausage. All the sides were very good as well. The corn bread is so moist and sweet. It just melts in your mouth. I'm usually disappointed with BBQ places but I'm in BBQ heaven here.
Some times more is more. GW’s is the definition of Texas BBQ - customer service, plating, taste, restaurant management. BBQ concierge Mr. Dave, and owner, Mr. George Watts, made me feel like a queen. Every season has different sides. And a beautiful outdoor area to enjoy each season. I fell in love with the Gouda jalapeño sausage. I rarely ever get a dessert and instantly made an exception for this cookie. I love how organized and clean all workers kept every area. It’s every little thing that led to an unforgettable experience.
I’ve waited the hour in line and ate inside and was so happy with the food. With liking the barbecue I decided to do their thanksgiving catering options for the holiday. I got just the brisket, and made my own sides. The brisket came out just like how it does in the restaurant with following their instructions to reheating it the day of thanksgiving. I was able to even chop up the brisket like they do with just my hands alone. The only downside was having to wait two hours in a line of many others who did the pickup catering option to pick it up on Wednesday the day before.
I'm so happy that I finally got to G.W.'s BBQ! I went mid week after the lunch rush & the line moved quickly. I tried the pork ribs & brisket, jalapeno corn, & bacon potato salad. Lord have mercy, it was so good - all of it! I wanted to try the turkey, but I arrived after the turkey sold out so I decided to came back on Saturday. Good call. They had PASTRAMI BEEF RIBS on the Saturday menu! There's no other way to say it, it was a culinary delight! I got the turkey too, it was so good that I'm getting GW's Turkey & sides for Thanksgiving. Kudos to everyone at GW's. On both visits I was treated so kindly that I truly felt like a valued customer! This is more than BBQ, this is a destination restaurant. If you've ever been to some of the best BBQ places in Texas, you understand that there will be a line, & if you get there late, items will sell out. THIS BBQ is a high quality product, so expect to pay for exceptional food and enjoy the ride. YOLO .
An experience you don't want to miss out on. Excellent moist tender BBQ and the turkey that melts in your mouth. Even a vegetarian would be happy to indulge in the scrumptious professional ally done side dishes. Personable staff and David, the maitre d, making sure everyone is happy and content with the food.
Our trek to visit all of the 2023 “25 Best New and Improved BBQ Joints in Texas” is now complete. Our final destination on this list was GW’s BBQ in San Juan. The goal of the pitmasters was to bring the Central Texas style of BBQ to South Texas. This style includes oak smoked meats and homemade sausages served in a cafeteria-style line, meats carved right in front of you and served on red butcher paper. When we arrived at 11:30 in the morning, a line had already formed. It was not a long wait as our host, David, kept the line moving. The dining room was clean and spacious. David walked around the room making sure that everyone had what they needed and was quick to get anything that was requested. Our meal was an excellent culmination of our culinary adventure. As usual, we ordered the Texas Trinity. The brisket was moist and tender. It paired very well with their original and sweet heat BBQ sauces. Their homemade sausage also had a good flavor. A sweet mustard BBQ sauce complemented this meat very well. For us, the stars of the show were the pork ribs. They were meaty, tender and had a delicious savory, sweet glaze. Typically, ribs are not my go to choice but I would definitely order the ribs again. There was a plethora of sides to choose from which made it very hard for me. We settled on the Cilantro Lime Coleslaw, Salsa Macha Green Beans, Brisket Baked Beans and Pork Belly Rice. The coleslaw had a base of crunchy green cabbage with a creamy mayonnaise dressing and fresh lime juice, which gave it a vibrant, acidic kick. This was by far our favorite side of this meal. The Salsa Macha Green Beans were fresh, crisp beans marinated in a Mexican sauce of dried chilies, garlic and oil. They were topped with peanuts (optional). The Brisket Baked Beans were your typical baked beans enhanced with brisket and a bit of jalapeño. The Pork Belly Rice was a seasonal addition. It was flavorful, smoky, and peppery pork belly mixed with rice. We were very happy that our last destination was so enjoyable. As an added note, since this restaurant made the 2023 “25 Best New and Improved BBQ Joints in Texas” it has gone on to rank #5 on the 2025 Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ Joints in Texas. If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping in and checking it out.
Worth. Every. Minute. This BBQ spot is about a 40-minute drive for us, and even with an hour+ wait in line (with three kids in tow!), I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. The meats were tender and bursting with flavor, but let me tell you—the sides are on another level. The potato salad tasted exactly like mama makes it, comforting and perfectly seasoned. But the true showstopper? The pork belly fried rice. Honestly, life changing. Our whole family agreed we’d gladly wait in line again just for that dish alone. We know it’s part of the rotating menu, but consider this our official petition to make it a permanent staple! Don’t let the wait time discourage you. We managed it with kids ages 2, 6, and 9, and the setup makes it doable: fans all around the porch to keep everyone cool, Yeti coolers filled with water for guests, and a crew that’s as attentive as they are friendly. From start to finish, it’s more than just a meal—it’s an experience. Ps. The lemonade is amazing!
To have bbq this good close to home is great. The food lived up to the hype, (8.2 on a local scale)The collective indulgence of the brisket with all the sides was delicious to say the least. Try everything if your budget allows. Even in the rush hour, The hosts were very accomodating to our large party and let us feel very welcome.
Went for our first time with moderate expectations and we were BLOWN AWAY by the entire experience. We waited in line for an hour to order (arrived 15 minutes before opening), but the wait was worth it. Everything we ordered was delectable to the eyes and the palate. Also, the Pit Master takes his time to explain the menu and checked in on us multiple times (despite the crowds), to make sure we were satisfied with our meal. Definitely a gem in the RGV!
First time here. I have eaten in many BBQ Places from the Rio Grand Valley all the way North to San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, etc. GW's did not disappoint, and is one of my Top BBQ places in Texas. I Ordered the Texas 2 Step. It was amazing. The brisket was moist and delicious. The pork ribs were amazing, as well as the jalapeño and cheese sausage. I also ordered a beef rib, which was fall off the bone amazing! The sides were amazing as well. I had the macaroni and cheese, potato salad, and the sweet and delicious cornbread. Met some of the staff and they were nice and friendly. I definitely recommend this place for everyone. We will definitely be coming back! Great Job GW BBQ! Keep up the Great Work! Best BBQ place in the Rio Grande Valley!
This is great bbq. On site. Real wood smoked meat. The special chicken fried steak was just outstanding using the smoked brisket meat, that was lean. The meat is smoked well. Normal brisket smoked will have layers of fat still attached but very tender. I’m not a fan of all that extra fat. But that’s Me. Price isn’t cheap for bbq. Takeout is fast. Ask about the specials. Top notch Chicken fried steak.
