With a lot of competition in the area, I was certainly impressed by the quality of the food. I got a lot of top notch BBQ for $23. This was my first time there and I definitely want to come back! The brisket was out of this world. Seriously, some of the best I've ever had. And, I've had a lot. The ribs were tasty and the sides were phenomenal. The Gouda cheese sausage was off the charts. Thank you for an excellent experience!
The brisket was excellent; moist and smoky. The hatch chili/Gouda cheese sausage was great, well smoked. We buy brisket by the pound, sausage by the links and share. Barbecue served on butcher paper the way it was meant to be 🤤
Texas BBQ Done Right! (Even Our Boston Kids Were Impressed) My husband and I recently moved here from Boston, and while our kids were visiting before heading back home, we wanted to give them a truly classic Texas experience. We chose San Marcos BBQ, and the food was absolutely spectacular! We decided on the Family Special #1 ($54.00), which easily feeds 4–6 people. It came with 1 lb of fantastic Brisket, and instead of the standard links, we upgraded to the amazing Hatch Gouda Sausage. We chose two pints of sides, opting for the Mac N' Cheese, Potato Salad, and a surprisingly delicious pint of Braised Cabbage. The Brisket was moist, smoky, and had that perfect bark—exactly what Texas BBQ should be. The Hatch Gouda Sausage was a huge hit; the combination of the smoky meat and the creamy, spicy Hatch Gouda cheese was out of this world! But the absolute standout item was the Braised Cabbage. Seriously, we never thought we'd rave about cabbage, but this side dish was incredible. It was cooked down to perfection, flavorful, and unlike any cabbage we've ever had. We loved the brisket and sausage so much, we ended up ordering more to take home with us! San Marcos BBQ is a phenomenal spot that delivers on flavor and value. We are so glad we made this our family dinner while the kids were in town. Highly, highly recommend stopping by!
Went for the first time with my wifey on our day off, it was amazing! The brisket, turkey, chili & cheese sausage was amazing. Had cream corn and this mashed potato with sausage also very good. All in all it was delicious, will definitely go back. Liked the reg bbq vs the spicy. Need to try the banana pudding next time looked really good. Also the price was pretty affordable 🙏🏽
I’m from NC and came to Texas for business travel . I went to Black’s barbecue and thought it was good but decided to try San Marcos barbecue instead, and it blew black‘s barbecue out of the water hands down. Chris was kind enough to offer me a sample of the pork belly and I’ve never had anything better. I immediately ordered it and brisket and this place truly is the best barbecue in Texas. I hope to come back many more times in the future

I don’t post Google reviews unless I feel that a place sticks out in a way that motivates me to advocate for it. I believe this bbq can hold its own against any I’ve had in Greater Austin. That in itself is high praise given the high bar. Love the local dive vibe and authentic Texas bbq diner atmosphere. No frills, no pretension…just a great local, friendly restaurant serving out a product to be proud of.
Came here with a friend, and the people who worked here were so kind and friendly! We wanted a Texan barbecue experience, and I think we got it! We got The Judy, and it was so good! More than enough for my friend and I. Everything was delicious, and the vibe was just what we were looking for.
Absolutely delicious ! The mashed potatoes were fire and the macaroni is fantastic too. Normally bbq joints have awful sides but these were great! The brisket was moist and flavorful and sooooo tender, the sausages were both fantastic. It was nice being given the option to opt for four fountain drinks instead of a gallon of tea with our family meal since only one of us drinks tea! For delish bbq, it was fairly affordable - 4 of us ate our fill (we are not small appetite people so....it's plenty, believe me) and still had a small plate to go, added a dessert and still only spent around $60-65, in this economy, that's fantastic. There was a lot of seating, it was nice and cool and clean to sit and dine in. I love it and I'm glad I stopped in!
Awesome staff. Awesome bbq. I love the ‘no frills’ atmosphere. The homemade bbq sauce is really good . I have never had turkey bbq but it was very moist..the sandwiches were priced excellent and very filling.
The brisket had the juiciness and char with the hint of sour you want. Perfection. Sausage was with Gouda was the right amount spice. The potatoes with sausage and cheese were a favorite, Kudos to staff, they didn’t upsell. Actually helped us get more food with the specials for less price. Great job pit master and great Jo’s staff.
I dropped in just a few minutes before closing and the staff still gave me a warm welcome. The gal taking my order was friendly and very helpful in helping me decide on what to order. I got ribs with pinto beans and Mac&cheese with an ice tea. They added pickles and onions, BBQ sauce, and 3 slices of bread. The ribs were amazing and yes the meat just fell off the bone. The sides and everything else was very good. Inside it was a simple dining area that was clean and well lit. Very much enjoyed all aspects of this place and the friendly staff. 👍
Brisket, sausages, green beans and the potato salad are delicious. It is very well priced. Ever since I found this place, I stopped going to other more expensive options. This place delivers an incredible Texan BBQ experience. I am giving it 4/5 stars in atmosphere because they need a bit of improvement in the facility. Other than that this place is one of my favorites in the San Antonio-Austin area.

Barn-like dining room had echo effect. Hard to hold a conversation. Great food. But what was greater? Their hospitality. I met my old friend from high school, class of 1968. The restaurant cleared out about 1:30, but we kept talking about old times. Then our wives showed up and the conversation continued. All we bought was an ice tea, but we stayed and talked till after 4. The staff were supportive - not a word to us about leaving. It turned out to be a truly wonderful afternoon. My husband ate his chopped beef sandwich but it wasn’t terrible but nothing to come back for. It was covered in a dark bbq sauce that tasted good. I had the same sandwich and it was okay until I found a chicken or turkey bone in it. It made me feel like they use all the old meat and call it a chopped beef sandwich. They apologized and got me a sliced brisket sandwich. I went to put bbq sauce on it and it was not the same bbq sauce they pre mix on the chopped beef which made my suspicions worse that they just use all leftover meat in it and cover it up with a dark sauce they don’t offer you at the table. Sliced brisket was okay but not like what I’m used to. The bbqsauce for sliced beef has a mustard taste which I didn’t care for. Creamed corn was amazing but banana pudding is banana flavored jello tasting. Overall not great. Cool looking place inside and service was good.
It's was ok, I have to say the day I went it was way better than KENT BLACK's by far.
I don't know what happened if they have a new pit master or what. Our brisket was really moist, but like over tenderized. The bark was soft/mushy. The flavor wasn't there either. The Gouda cheese sausage was really good.

I've loved San Marcos BBQ for the last 5 years, but no more... not sure what has changed in the last 6 months, but it has changed for the worse... no longer do they cut your meat at the counter for you, they give you a number and they'll bring it to you when it's convenient for them. It was not busy at all, 2 people ahead of me, and it took over 10minutes for this sorry looking meat to be brought to my table. No bark at all. I don't know what this "other" brisket was that they chose to serve me, but it was the driest, tasteless meat I've ever gotten at any BBQ joint. It went in the trash and we went to Blacks. Sorry to say, San Marcos BBQ has failed....
This place reminds me of the Lockhart barbecue scene around 2010–2011, solid enough for the time, but well before Franklin, the Muellers, and Micklethwait elevated Central Texas barbecue to an entirely different standard. Unfortunately, this spot hasn’t kept pace with that evolution. I stopped by on my way to Austin from San Antonio and ordered the $29 Rudy Plate, which included ¼ lb brisket, ¼ lb turkey, ¼ lb rib, one sausage ring, two sides, a dessert, and a drink. The brisket was dry, tough, and oddly reminiscent of a Choice New York strip—minus the flavor. The turkey had no seasoning whatsoever, and even worse, I found three hairs between the slices. (I had just run the San Antonio Half Marathon that morning and didn’t have the energy to address it with staff.) The pork ribs tasted more like lunchmeat ham than barbecue. The sausage was simply a miss. The beans, potato salad, and pecan pie were fine, but nothing memorable. Given the number of far better barbecue options nearby, I can’t recommend this place.
The food they served us were leftovers, or they simply don't make any BBQ at this restaurant. The brisket, sausage, and turkey had no taste of being smoked, they were dry, and cold. You could not smell or see any meat being smoked anywhere in the premises, and this was at noon on a Sunday. The coleslaw also didn't look fresh.
