Opinions de Andersen's Danish Bakery and Restaurant Santa Barbara
I wish they have one store in San Diego. The Pina colada tres leches is delicious 😋 😍!!!!
We went there for breakfast and were delighted to finally find a decent coffee as good as any you would get in Australia. A lovely place to sit under the beautiful trees. The service was great as well.
One of the best bakeries in Santa Barbara. So cute and the food is amazing. Probably the best quiche I have ever had. And my dog absolutely loves charlottes dog treats! Definitely stop by and have all of the baked goods you can!
Andersen’s is a charming, family-owned Danish-style bakery and restaurant that’s been passed down through generations. They specialize in authentic European and Scandinavian pastries, and also serve breakfast, brunch, and dinner. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and can easily accommodate parties of all sizes. I ordered the crab cake Benedict, and my wife had the bratwurst sausage with eggs. The crab cake Benedict was perfectly cooked - rich, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The bratwurst was equally delicious, packed with savory spices and paired well with the eggs and potatoes. Both dishes are definitely worth trying. The interior of Andersen’s makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a cozy café somewhere in Europe. The antique-style furniture adds to its old-world charm, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere. Overall, Andersen’s is a delightful spot for a casual meal or a special treat. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner. She gave me a little bit of history of the business, and even gave me and my wife a complimentary slice of a delicious cinnamon dessert. It was comparable to Cinnabon, but way better! Definitely give it a try. You won’t be disappointed!
The only item I ever purchase is their Apple strudel which is truly delicious. It’s flaky and full of apples, and only $6.95 for 1/4 of a strip. I used to buy an entire strip to bring to gatherings - - that’s how much I like this pastry. The service was just fine and friendly enough for me.
Delicious breakfast… never had a Danish Benedict before coming here. Perfectly cooked poached eggs, delicious hollandaise and wonderful Danish puff pastry to replace traditional muffin. Great crab cakes on top. Fresh squeezed lemonade and very friendly service. Terrific location right on state very peaceful and near Saturday farmer market. Open for lunch and dinner also the menu was very diverse with lots of offerings for all tastes. Had a cinnamon palmier pastry it also was delicious.
This restaurant is one of the restaurants I love the most in the entire WORLD!!! Hits my semi-European taste buds so perfectly that I'm on earthly heaven! The pastries out of this shop are to die for. I don't believe anywhere doss pastry so perfectly in California or maybe in the US. I take a boat load of pastries every time I'm here! Such an epic store. Can't wait to move to Santa Barbara to be close to here all the time.
First time here. Had breakfast outside. They have a most delicious crab cake eggs benedict, the eggs were perfectly cooked. Hubby thoroughly enjoyed his breakfast croissant sandwich. The few desserts we took with us to go were light, flaky and totally worth the extra calories. A piece of advice - avoid eating inside your car. The puff pastry layers will shatter and fly everywhere, just like sand from the beach. With over 300 miles to go we couldn't wait until we got home. Yeah, made a good mess in the car.
We recently tried this Danish spot in Santa Barbara, and while it wasn’t quite what we expected, the food definitely left an impression. Let’s start with the duck. It was perfectly roasted, with crispy skin and juicy, tender meat. No complaints there—it was flavorful, rich, and cooked just right. The portion was big enough to satisfy, but not over the top. Solid dish. Next up, the goulash. Not something you typically think of as Danish, but it worked. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the sauce had that nice balance of savory and a slight kick from the paprika. Comfort food at its finest. Between courses, we took a detour into the world of Danish pastries (Danishes?). These were definitely the stars of the show. Flaky, buttery, and with just the right amount of sweetness. Now, let’s talk about the service—or lack thereof. Don’t expect to sit down and have someone come take your order. You walk in, pay at the counter, and then a server brings the food to your table. It’s not a dealbreaker, but if you’re looking for a full-service experience, this isn’t it. Still, the staff was friendly enough. All in all, it’s a cozy little spot with solid food. The duck and goulash are worth trying, but the pastries are what you’ll remember. If you’re in Santa Barbara and in the mood for something different, it’s worth a stop—just don’t expect table service or a super polished experience.
My partner and I who are locals came here for breakfast and mimosas, the breakfast is decent, however the mimosas were very weak. About 95% orange juice. When the server Matt brought our food, I asked how they made the mimosas because I was just here the other day eating with a friend and they were much better. I proceeded to tell him that it tasted like mostly orange juice with no champagne and he just said “sorry” and walked away. Bummer.
Nice outside setting. State St is pedestrian only so it is very quiet, Free samples tempted me. Loved the pastry. Encouraged me to have lunch. Had some duck left from previous night. Advertised it as oven roasted with crispy skin. Everyone loves crispy skin duck. This was not the case. The duck was a tired leftover hindquarter.
We were a party of 7 and went for Sunday Brunch. We were seated outside since it was a nice day. The menu was good. The food was average. The baked goods on the display looks good. We were disappointed with the service. We had to order inside. The server did not ask if we needed cutlery and if we needed anything else.
The bakery is good. The coffee is good. I didn’t care for the eggs Benedict or the service. When I arrived at about 11:30 on a Sunday I needed to order at the counter but by the time I left there was table service so that was confusing. No one explained that. I was supposed to know. The food arrived before drinks. Never nice. I didn’t care for the spicy potatoes or the ham. Would go again for bakery and atmosphere on State street but not interested much in that breakfast menu. I didn’t care not order a gigantic mimosa but fine. I think my counter server could have explained more.
Beautiful venue - But sadly feels neglected. White linens were dirty with paper overlaid which was also dirty. We snuck a clean paper from another table. I ordered coffee- was good and strong. Came in a lovely pot & poured out by the server. Scrambled eggs were fluffy and unflavoured, potatoes seasoned enough for the eggs to taste nice. Sausage was good as was bacon. Show stopper was the small dish of apple w smoked ham. That was delicious. Sadly the bakery/restaurant was cold to sit and eat in. We kept our coats on. Would we return… no. I really wanted to love this place & the experience but it missed the mark for me in too many areas. Dirty, cold, thin cutlery and pricey. Quiche was creamy and tasty. Desserts were average. Food was average. Cutlery was very thin - the cheapest I’ve seen in a sit down establishment = odd choice. The servers did a decent job and seemed pleasant. It wouldn’t take much to make this an amazing little place…
Ms. Anderson was very rude and disrespectful to a delivery driver while I was eating at restaurant. This family is known for being rude to people that don’t fit in with the ethnicity that normally comes in. She raised her voice and made person wait nearly 20 mins while attending other customers and ignoring the needs of original person needing assistance. As a local it’s disappointing to see this kind of hospitality service especially from owners.
Consistent with many other reviews, this establishment demonstrates an unsettling pattern of disrespect toward its staff, including behavior that occurs openly in front of customers, the owner is an old lady. She & her daughter are both owners. Additionally, the owners have displayed conduct numerous times, that appears RACIALLY DISCRIMINATORY. While the physical atmosphere may be pleasant, the overall environment is overshadowed by the owners abhorrent & shameful treatment by these two women. Now, with the already high cost of dining in Santa Barbara, I would STRONGLY advise against spending money at a business that shows a lack of basic human to human respect and appreciation for its employees. Although it seems to be a popular tourist destination, don’t be fooled. There are far better alternatives available. These owners need to be accountable somehow. Please go somewhere else instead yall
The place is totally cute, but the food and especially the staff are absolutely rude and horrible. They do not fit into Santa Barbara Hospitality at all. We go here once a year during the Christmas walk simply because it’s right in the middle of the action and every time it almost ruins the night. The staff there is so incredibly rude and the food is horrible. I have no idea why they’re still open. Maybe it’s a tourist trap because I don’t know any locals who actually go there.
I ate here with my family, and the owner was incredibly rude to not only our party but two others. She yelled at her staff to hurry up, as if they weren’t working hard enough. This place is understaffed, and the service and food are not good whatsoever. I would continue on, as we got recommended other great choices down the road, closer to the railroad. Highly recommended to pass and do not even support.
