Food is perfect. The range of options on the menu is astonishing. Tight space creates a great vibe rather than feeling crowded. As with any Mexican style restaurant, they have their own tweaks on the classics... And their's makes for many return visits.
The food, service, and drinks were so good. I suggest you try the duck!
Stopped by Santo Mezcal during a quick Santa Barbara staycation and it did not disappoint. This little gem is just steps from the waterfront and has such a cool, laid-back vibe. The bar is beautifully stocked with an impressive mezcal and tequila lineup, and the bartender was incredibly friendly with top-tier recommendations. We kicked things off with their house margaritas and Palomas—both perfectly balanced and refreshing. From the happy hour menu, the Taco Culichi (crispy shrimp + cheese taco) and halibut ceviche tostada with a vibrant verde sauce were absolute standouts. We couldn’t resist trying the Cabo Azul enchiladas—stuffed with real crab and completely to die for. Already planning our next visit. IG: The_hungry_Emil
Great food, great service, and overall a great time at this restaurant! Came here for my partner's birthday and had an amazing time, thanks to Omar! An amazing individual that provided us amazing service all night! Overall, 10/10 service and food, and will definitely be stopping by the next time I'm out in SB.
I must admit, I'm giving 5 starts because the food is PHENOMENAL. I really recommend the steak tacos, they were simply amazing along with all the sides. On the other hand, the service was a bit disappointed. I came here with my girlfriend with celiac and our first encounter with our server was weird. When she mentioned celiac, he rolled his eyes back. We were wondering if we should have left or not, but we stayed. Then, when the food arrived, just a second before we started eating he comes there and says (after we made sure there was no cross contamination risks) that wait there are cross contamination risks! In the end, he went to the kitchen and came back to us saying that there is contamination risk but ONLY when they have the happy hour. As you can imagine, for someone with celiac this is extremely confusing and risky. In the end, my girlfriend was confident it was fine and we stayed. And yes, it was celiac safe. This had an impact of course on the overall experience, but yes, we both agreed that the food was absolutely sensational. I should have given four starts maybe considering all, but I recognize that if it wasn't for this, things would have been standard, and if you don't have any special requirements, everything will be absolutely phenomenal.
I went here to eat for my birthday/last night in Santa Barbara. This was a solo trip and it can sometimes feel lonely on your birthday miles away from friends and family. Omar was a wonderful server from the start. He suggested the ribeye tacos when I asked what the go to menu item was. They were phenomenal! The steak melted in my mouth and all the flavors were right on! He also offered a shooter that was so yummy! To finish the evening he brought me dessert and him and another waitress sang to me. It truly made me feel special and was a great way to close out my birthday/this trip! Thank you! These photos don't do this dinner/drinks justice because I just snapped quickly but had to share!
Santo Mezcal (SM) is a true gem in the heart of Santa Barbara. It is a festival of variety - both for your eyes and palate, and seems to get it right almost all the time. This is top class progressive Mexican cuisine with heavy seafood additions. Be prepared to be dazzled in ways that you did not expect. Let's start with guac and chips. Chips were fresh made, crispy, all good. But then, you have this guacamole but with sprinkled crispy pork belly. I have never had that twist and it worked out beautifully. And yes, it has to be crispy pork bits or else they would not go well with the chips. Beautifully done. There was a mushroom carpaccio dish that was perhaps the best mushroom dish I've ever tasted. Sliced portobello mushrooms lightly grilled with a bit of lime, onions, burrata cheese, and other flavors. Truly magical. The beef apache was also quite innovative. It was a tartar yet mixed with avocado, tuna, and other goodness. Again, the flavor was unique and well balanced. I could go on and on about the empanadas, salad, tacos, etc. But here is the crux. Every dish is meticulously created. They are visually stunning and colorful. And each of them is has a way to progress Mexican cuisine in a particular way. They are experimental in your mouth. And most of them are marvelous. The one downside were the oysters as they came out a bit "room temperature". It didn't feel good to be eating room temperature raw oysters. I think the kitchen may have made it earlier but somehow the serving was late. Santo Mezcal is absolutely a stunner. Whether you like Mexican food or not, you must try this place when you're in Santa Barbara.
This place was the definition of a 5 star experience! Of course you have to have great food, which they did. Every dish was amazing. The drinks were also excellent. But that is just the start. You also need great service, which they had. We were seated quickly, drink order was taken quickly, and the food was delivered at the right pace. And it is a great looking place. I will definitely be coming back to this place every time I am in Santa Barbara!
A gem. If you are in Santa Barbara visiting and love Mexican food this a spot you definitely want to give a try. They start off with some chips and salsa with three different kind of salsa that are like an all star trio, very good. Me and my dad had the Ribeye steak tacos while my mom had a chicken salad that she said was very good. All of the food was on point 🔥. Service is great, atmosphere is also excellent. There inside and outside seating. We decided to sit outside since it was a nice weather day out, but if it does happen to cool down as the night settles in, no worries. They have heating lamps that they will put towards you to keep you warm and enjoying the outside experience. Definitely a new go to when I’m in Santa Barbara! We got there right on time but I will warn it filled up pretty fast, so seating time can vary. They also have a barcode you can hit just in case you have any type of food allergies. It will navigate you to their site, select what foods you are allergic to and the menu will take off all items that contain those foods you are allergic to. 💯
We just arrived in Santa Barbara this morning and needed to grab a quick lunch before going to our scheduled Bellosguardo House tour. This place was delicious. The tortilla chips are out of this world, the guacamole is fantastic, the steak tacos are delicious and the cocktails were refreshing. The service and atmosphere were exceptional. We will be in town for five days and we will definitely be back to try more items.
My cousin and I came here during a weekend getaway to see what all the hype was about—and it absolutely lived up to it! The service was super friendly, and the ambiance was cozy and welcoming. I had the Verde Enchiladas, my cousin had the Short Rib Tacos, and both were incredible. I also had a Mexican Mule that was perfectly made. Everything from start to finish was a 10/10. Highly recommend for lunch or dinner if you're in Santa Barbara!
Santo Mezcal is a fantastic spot in Santa Barbara if you’re looking for authentic flavors with a modern, elevated touch. We started with chips and salsas, and each one had its own personality—the smoky salsa stood out, while the verde added a bright kick. The queso fundido with chorizo and poblano peppers came out bubbling hot in a skillet and was easily one of the highlights of the meal—gooey, flavorful, and perfect with tortillas. For the main course, the enchiladas were beautifully presented with a squash blossom and a fresh green salad on top. The flavors were layered and balanced—earthy mushrooms inside, a rich green sauce, and just the right touch of cream. Paired with rice and beans, it was both hearty and refined. Parking is valet only, but there are plenty of affordable public parking lots close by, so it’s easy to get in and out. Santo Mezcal combines traditional Mexican dishes with a creative twist, and everything feels fresh and thoughtfully prepared. Highly recommend if you’re in Santa Barbara!
We stopped here just to grab something to snack on before wine tasting and then came back too take dinner home. Of course I didn't take photos because this was 2 wineries in and I totally forgot. But the 2 I do have were the best ever. The Paloma on their menu is one of the best I've ever had. We sat at the bar and had great convo with the hot male bartenders that were working that day and the folks sitting at the bar were very fun and engaging as well. My friend loved the beef ceviche style dish pictured. She said it was very flavorful and filling. We ordered steak tacos while waiting and they were absolutely delicious. My order on the way home was their way guys with potatoes and I inhaled it. I will definitely come back for the food, the service and the atmosphere!
Came by around 4pm not too crowded, the food was delicious! I had the crab meat enchiladas and a Pacifico Michilada my server was Aldo and he was great on making recommendations and informed me to try out there breakfast during the weekends, the young lady that greeted me at door was also very informative and nice, I forgot her name 😓. But overall great experience and would recommend!
Service was very friendly at the bar. Had a couple of different margaritas and they were fantastic.....you can really tell the difference when quality ingredients are used. For food I had the oysters stuffed with tuna, shrimp aquachile Negro and the crab enchiladas. All three were very delicious and would recommend anything that I ordered. The chips and salsa(2 different salsas) were also very good.
Great customer service, even better food, and the drinks were delicious! All around this place was hitting every area of what a restaurant should be! If you want good and flavorful food, customer service that is out of this world, and drinks that are to die for... well... this place is for you!
We stop into Santo Mezcal every time we’re in Santa Barbara, and it truly never disappoints. The food, atmosphere, and service are consistently great, making it one of our favorite spots in town. On our most recent visit, we started with the ceviche verde, which we highly recommend. The sweet crunch of the apple pieces pairs beautifully with the fresh fish—such a bright and refreshing appetizer. For mains, we had the Tacos del Mar and the Tacos de Chorizo de Crab—both were good and full of flavor. If you're visiting Santa Barbara and love modern Mexican cuisine, Santo Mezcal is a must-try!

Great spot, just off the beach and pier right on State Street. Great food and drinks. The happy hour is spectacular. Gets packed so better to go early or late.
Great lunch on the run. Had the ceviche octopus which was a nice portion for lunch with chips. We explained we were short on time as needed to get to SLO. Super prompt service. Will go back.

I stopped by for a strawberry Margarita. Very good and great service. The bartender, Edgar was very friendly and charming. I would stop here again for sure. Good and lively ambiance.
They were out of duck carnitas and pork belly tacos! On the 4th of July long weekend of all times. I settled for the crispy tacos. It was good but I'd really rather have the pork belly tacos that the server recommended when we sat down. Oh well. Maybe next time. Service was good and attentive. Got a complimentary flan dessert for a birthday but no candle.

I had high hopes for this restaurant. But I was extremely disappointed. Food: they were out of a lot of items on New Year’s Day. Food: we ordered the Tlacoyo ( the mushrooms were the only good thing in this plate with the pickled onion. I ordered chorizo but they were out of it and I still got charged for it. I didn’t notice when I tapped and needed to catch a train), queso fundido and the cauliflower ceviche (never again). I know some chefs can make cauliflower taste delicious but this was not it. I’m not sure if the tacos or enchiladas are the stars on the menu but I wasn’t craving any of them. Looks like the only good thing about this restaurant is the location, right next to the train station and we stayed next door at the Riviera Beach house during our Santa Barbara getaway.
