Opinions de Scarlett Begonia Santa Barbara
I’ve loved Scarlett Begonia since their old location in Victoria Court, so yes, I’m a longtime brunch loyalist. Walk-in friendly, but I’m a reservation kinda gal. Brunch waits are just not my thing. The ambience is a big part of why I keep coming back. It’s cozy, charming, and effortlessly Santa Barbara without trying too hard. They have two patios, one out front and another tucked away in the back. Both are bright and relaxed, perfect for slow mornings and people-watching. Inside feels warm, airy, and comfortable even when it’s full. It works just as well for a casual catch-up as it does for a proper sit-down brunch. I honestly don’t know what the negative reviews are about because I sure haven’t run into that experience here. Not once. Maybe some folks just need to lighten up and order a mimosa. I stick to what I love and I don’t mess around. The lemon ricotta pancakes with fresh blueberry compote, housemade syrup, and a side of bacon are my go-to every single time. Perfectly fluffy, balanced, and consistently delicious. When something works, I keep ordering it. Weekends are busy and if you’ve ever worked brunch service, you already know it’s the worst. Speaking as a former server, patience goes a long way and the staff here handles it well. Bonus points for the pup menu because that’s always a win. Scarlett Begonia remains a solid Santa Barbara brunch staple that I keep coming back to.
We reserved a table for breakfast here for my husband, his parents, myself, and my tiny dog. The hostess was very welcoming and thoughtful. We sat outside and enjoyed the detailed menu - there is one for dogs as well! I ordered quinoa oatmeal and was blown away by the textures and flavors. I had a bite of my husband's vegan breakfast patty and it was quite meaty tasting and delicious. Even my very picky, "meat and potatoes" father in law expressed surprise at his biscuits and gravy, especially noting their unusual yet delicately spiced gravy. Honestly, the menu seemed amazing and I was truly a bit sad that I didn't have the stomach capacity to try every single thing. Sigh! I would call these dishes upgraded classics. When we visit Santa Barbara again, this definitely makes our list for must eats.
My neighbor invited me to have lunch with her for my birthday. She named a few places near us, but I picked I Scarlet Begonia because the food is consistently delicious, well-presented, and always satisfying. My friend ordered the Benedict and I told her that I’ve never seen a Benedict with greens, which is the extra step that Scarlett begonia takes to make their food extraordinary vs. ordinary. The potatoes were well prepared and there was so much food that she had to take half of it home. It was quite beautiful as you see in the picture and very tasty. I’ve eaten here a few times and once I tasted their lemon ricotta pancakes it is my go to Every time. Even though it was 1 o’clock in the afternoon, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to eat these fluffy and moist pancakes that are so light they melt in your mouth! I usually can only eat one pancake, but they were so good I had to eat two, so I indulged. I also ordered the sausage links for the first time and asked for them well done and they came out. Perfect! I needed the extra protein and I already had bacon at home so wanted something different. Those sausages were just delicious and a perfect compliment to the sweet blueberry sauce on the pancakes. Kaylee was our server and she was the most professional, accommodating, friendly, efficient server I’ve ever encountered in Santa Barbara. I asked her if she was a manager because her demeanor and professionalism was outstanding ask for her he won’t be sorry. I was pleasantly surprised when they brought my chocolate cake with strawberries and a candle. I still have some in my refrigerator because I was so full from breakfast. I’m going to save it later during the football game. !
Came for Sunday brunch and sat outside with our dogs. We were seated partly in the sun and they kindly moved us to a shady table once another party left. Kudos to the hostesses and the waitstaff for being easy going about it. Nice strong pours for the wine and we enjoyed our biscuits and gravy, brown butter waffle and lemon ricotta pancakes. Service was efficient, friendly and accommodating. Definitely recommend
Our family was on a road trip from the Los Angeles area and upon doing some research on the best brunch places around Santa Barbara on Reddit, Scarlett Begonia came up. Initially we made a reservation that we were an hour late for ah - thank God we were able to still be seated. Thank you to the Scarlett Begonia for accommodating us! Our family is composed of two parents, three mainly adult children, and two dogs. This place has been so welcoming. We ordered the following: *Lemon Ricotta Pancakes - delightful, a good amount of syrup and actual blueberries, the butter wasn’t overpowering at all despite its looks which elevated the whole taste *Steak sandwich w side salad - we chose to have the meat be medium rare (you are able to choose the level of how well you’d like your steak to be done), the side salad is a generous portion that made our whole family so happy *Beyond Meat sandwich w side fries - a good burger that wasn’t greasy and the fries ARE INCREDIBLE!!! *Green Rancheros - the best combination of vegetables, tacos, guacamole, and a fried egg *Lavendar latte (oat milk) - made in house *Mango Guava Kombucha - not made in house but a good quality one is provided Highlights: 🥰 the kindness of the service. They are thorough and do not rush their customers. We want to give a HUGE shoutout to Erin for checking in with us regularly and taking the extra steps to make sure we felt welcomed and seen - it made eating all the more enjoyable. Erin, thank you for being so kind to our dogs, getting to know how our day has been, providing us with the ketchup and Tabasco sauce, and ensuring we’ve had plenty of space for the dishes. Thank you also for the travel recommendations too. This level of service is a standard I notice the whole staff try to uphold. Truly this is what makes this a restaurant I’ll be sure to recommend to all my friends, family, and neighbor!! 🪻all the syrups are made in house - we were surprised to discover that the lavendar syrup was actually made by hand by pressing the lavendar flowers at Scarlett Begonia! The taste is noticeably different from other lavendar lattes that I’ve had. 🐶 if your dog(s) is able to be respectful to people, this is such a wonderful place to bring your dog(s)! We were so delighted to come across the menu offered for dogs specifically! Complimentary water and dog treats are also provided. There is seating in the patio that allows for a good amount of sunlight. 💛 the whole place is aesthetically well kept. I can tell there is routine, thoughtful and intentional maintenance all throughout this restaurant God bless you all!
I absolutely loved this little spot in downtown Santa Barbara. We were seated outside right away on a beautiful Saturday morning for brunch. The staff were very friendly and attentive. We tried the deviled eggs as a starter which were very good. I also got a vanilla latte which was perfect and came with a little soft biscotti to nibble on. I had the Green Rancheros which has shrimp, eggs and crispy tortillas and it was very good and definitely filling. My husband got the lemon ricotta pancakes and raved about how good they were. I would definitely recommend this spot for a relaxed brunch in beautiful Santa Barbara.
Man do we feel stupid. We moved to Santa Barbara 3 years ago, and hadn’t been to Scarlett Begonia until yesterday. A spectacular experience. The beverages were adorned with shrimp, bacon and amazing, magical flavors. Also started with their dirty fries, topped with avocado and a poached egg. I mean, come on!! Ate every single fry and then licked the bowl. Then came the main courses. Let me describe just one. Biscuits, covered with the best gravy imaginable, then topped with a perfectly fried piece of chicken and a poached egg. Then there was Vivian, our culinary tour guide. An adorable addition to an unforgettable experience. Run, DO NOT WALK, to Scarlett Begonia and hang on tight!! To a food lover, this is the Disneyland of restaurants. The happiest place on earth!!
Absolutely one of my favorite places to have breakfast in town! The food and baked goods are very delicious, and the service is very detail oriented. There are many options from lighter breakfasts to heavier breakfasts so even if you are with the mix crowd everyone has something to chose from! My husband almost ordered the complimentary bowl of water on the pup menu but they have all family member covered! My favorite thing about Scarlett Begonia is the drinks! Their Chai and London Fog is the best I have had and will never disappoint.
The $30 All Day Breakfast might sound expensive, but it is actually an amazing deal. It includes 3 dishes: organic cottage cheese, soft scramble eggs and lemon ricotta pancakes. Each is a fully developed dish (see photos) and all are amazing. My dining partner had the French toast which was also delicious. It comes with tres leches mascarpone, strawberries and sliced almonds. Staff were great and loved the building and decor. Easy 5 stars and I'll be back soon to try the shrimp and grits.
This place is awesome! Blueberry pancakes! Their drinks are amazing with interesting takes on margaritas, bloody Mary's, gin n tonics, and creative ideas. They change things up a lot so their menu is never the same which is good to keep things fresh. Their food is delicious and the setting is in a quaint cottage style home with many rooms. You will love this place. Stop by and enjoy!
Delicious breakfast, nice staff and great ambiance. All the dishes were really flavorful and unique. Dirty fries were awesome, ricotta pancakes - excellent, shrimp and grits - great. Cinnamon rolls - so good. Only thing I could go without was the biscuits, they were pretty dry. Signature drinks were good too.
An excellently placed little bistro in the heart of Santa Barbara set in a cozy courtyard. The menu is filled with history and sustainable excellence. We chose a multitude of tastiness. The open faced biscuit sandwich, green rancheros, endless summer scramble, strawberry French toast, and the Scarlett cheeseburger with dirty fries. Everything was superb and amazing portions! Definitely bring your appetite.
The food here is remarkable and I’ve eaten here for years. My family wants to go there every time they visit me and I don’t even live in town anymore. I’ve had the hot and iced vanilla latte as well as a London fog tea latte, lemonade and hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows. All delicious. I love the soft scrambled eggs dish. Lemon pancakes are to die for. My mom’s go to is the shrimp and grits. So many flavors! The bacon I suggest skipping. Almost every time the service disappoints though. For all the years I’ve been going here. Four stars because of that.
Cute spot, okay food, odd billing - we were a party of 5, but they applied autogratuity for parties of 6 or more. There’s a 3% credit card surcharge that’s in fine print on the menu. The sales tax was calculated on top of the autogratuity and surcharge. We were feeling rushed out, so didn’t notice these oddities on the bill until afterwards. I understand this might be an issue with their point of sale set-up, but for the price point, this deters me from going back.
The Lemon ricotta pancakes are delicious and generous. The atmosphere is nice especially the patio at the back on a sunny day. However, I was surprised by the surcharge of 60 cents. When I inquired I was told that this was for using the credit card although this was not communicated by the server. It just showed up in my bill. Although it is a small amount, the principle of it bothers me a little. It was interesting to observe the menu for pets with line items like water..... free and other food items with a price line. I am sure dog owners must like this.
In my experience, Scarlett Begonia has aspirations to be a little bit more than it is. It wants to be rustic but elevated, farm to table, cheffy but laid back. But in many ways it comes off as disorganized and uncaring. We dined on a Monday morning, and service was slow - perhaps they were busier than they expected. It happens. However, there was just an air of blasé about the whole experience. The plating was messy, just about everything we ordered was swimming in a bowl of thick sauce with no cohesion to the plating. The flavors were all fine - nothing that wowed me, but also certainly not bad. The surfaces of everything in the building were just kind of worn too, like even the paint didn't want to be there. If you have breakfast here, you'll have a fine time. But if you're charging $21 for scrambled eggs, they should be amazing - and these were just underwhelming.
The food wasn't good. I got the shrimp and grits and my partner got the biscuits and gravy. The one biscuit that came with my partners meal didn't even look like a biscuit. The biscuit was dense, dry and small. My shrimp and grits were watery and the shrimps didn't taste like they were properly cleaned. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place to friends or family.
Food and Service were good, but added a "Surcharge Fee" too the bills without warning or explanation. I understand running a business is hard, but just raise the prices on the menu. Unexpeced fees will make me think twoce about going back.
Overpriced and underwhelming We had the Eggs Benedict ($26) and the Shrimp and Grits ($26). For the Eggs Benedict, the menu simply says “ask server,” and we were told it could be ordered with smoked salmon. For $26, we expected a generous, well-composed dish with thoughtful garnishes or vegetables. What arrived was a very small biscuit cut in half with a little smoked salmon and a poached egg — no vegetables, no composition, and no value. The only vegetable was a small handful of arugula that was never mentioned, and one of us is allergic to arugula. The server did not ask about food allergies, which was concerning. I requested the hollandaise on the side, which turned out to be a good decision — it was greasy, flavorless, and left a heavy film on the tongue similar to lard or margarine. Hollandaise should be tangy, velvety, and creamy; this was none of those. As I’m writing this review I can still sense the greasy film on my tongue. The side of fruit was poor quality — mostly orange slices, with strawberries and blueberries that were moldy / mushy /not fresh and had to be spit out (see photo). The Shrimp and Grits ($26) came with only four shrimp. Also came with a handful of arugula. We asked for a cup of hot water and were charged $2 without being told in advance. When the charge was questioned, the staff became very argumentative, stating that hot water is listed on the menu and therefore chargeable. If hot water costs $2, that should be clearly disclosed at the time of request — at which point we would reasonably ask whether the water is imported from France. To be fair, the restaurant does have a charming, rustic house atmosphere and generally attentive service. However, the interior was cold and drafty. For the prices being charged, the portions, food quality, and billing practices/unannounced charges were extremely disappointing and difficult to recommend.
Unfortunately, this place has always had the absolute worst service, which makes me really bummed because there are a couple whom are really great. But there’s one woman who used to be a hostess, who I believe now works and weight staff that literally has the nastiest attitude ever. And then there are a couple of women who sometimes work behind the bar who are so incredibly rude and bitter. Looking at the reviews, I’m shocked that the Owner continues employing them if she cares about the guest experience. And to be honest, the owner sometimes seems really defensive and combative. We continued coming here because the food was really good, but sadly they’re really cutting corners on ingredients, including size and portion. The bagels are no longer homemade and now they come from Jordana‘s, which is basically a restaurant food supplier that all of the restaurants use. And the cinnamon rolls are now quite small and dry mostly comprised of cream cheese. I don’t know what’s happening with their kitchen, but I really hope that they get it under control. I would love to see this place not go downhill so I’m putting this out here in hopes that the owner and management can please put more effort in hospitable service and quality food. Why goes through all the trouble of having a restaurant when there’s lack of care of the guest experience and only an attitude and now compromise in the food ingredients. Eventually, the bustling lines will start to go away if there’s a constant reputation of poor service and mediocre food, especially for the price of the food.
