Everything we ordered hit the spot with wow!!s. The chaash was next level, and the biriyani is cooked and served in the most authentic form. A must visit in the bay area.

We went here for the first time and wondered why we didn't visit this restaurant earlier! They had an elaborate menu with alot of options for Veg/ Non veg. If one wants to have authentic maharashtrian cuisine this place did not disappoint us. We loved the vada pav and masala peanuts apart from this we ordered veg Kolhapuri, malvani chicken and Mumbai tava pulao. Everything was delicious.

Delicious Indian food! We had thalis for lunch (one vegetarian and one chicken) and it was tasty and filling. I will definitely be coming back. Hardeep was our waiter and he did an excellent job.

I go for the chicken wrap and I leave happy every single time I run to this place on my cheat day because I cannot live without their shawarma It is amazing please come try it you can get it with the fries in or out and you will still enjoy it no matter what. come give it a try.

It was a fabulous meal! Mohit, our server was great. We tried sabudana vada, prawn fry, Saoji goat, zunkha- bajra bhakar and green chicken with roti and paratha. Everything tasted just like it would back in India. note: It takes a little time to get the dishes out as everything is prepared fresh.

N
Nitin Sonawane

Konkan Goat curry looked spicy but was very mild…bland (?). But server did mention it is mild…wasn’t expecting too mild. Goat meat was perfectly cooked…flavor could be improved. Rice was great; paired with this curry; next time I will try with naan rather than chapati (which was great too).

This was my family’s third time dining at Swaraj and once again it was amazing! Their dishes are so flavorful and remind me of eating my mom’s home-cooked food. Our go to dishes are the Malvani Mutton and Sukha chicken. Not only was the food outstanding, but our server, Jaggi was very accommodating and attentive. Would highly recommend Swaraj to anyone who is looking for an authentic Maharashtrian experience!

Everything we tried was delicious (sabudana vada, prawns fry, macchi curry, chicken rajhans, Shikand, mango lassi) . Not sure how I didn’t hear abt this restaurant earlier. Gambits are delicate and cooked to perfection. Heard Vada pav is amazing so that on the bucket list for next visit :)

The kolhapuri chicken was really delicious and spicy. The portion size was sufficient. The Rice bhakri was really good as well. Definitely worth the visit.

Very authentic food and amazing service. We ordered sukha chicken, chapathi and sabudana vada. Everything was very tasty. And our server Mohit was also very friendly and gave amazing service. They served the food pretty quickly as well. All in all must try.

Thank you Gayathri for being a great server and for your recommendations. Our first time eating this style of Indian food & the flavors were perfect! The Surmai masala and Pav Bhaji were excellent. Although the mackerel in the Surmai had more of a sardine feel due to it being broken up and full of bones. Still, it was delicious! I would get it again.

The best place to try out the Maharashtrian food especially non-vegetarian dishes. Saoji mutton, Kolhapuri chicken and tambda raada are the MUST try dishes. Kothimbir Vadi is the best in the Bay Area. 10/10 recommended.

Best maharashtrians food so far. I have tried Swaraj food truck- milpitas before. It is great food, restaurant at El Camino is also good. they have wider range of food options. Kothimbir wadi, vadapav and panipuri are best among snacks. It was really delightful to see actual ragda for panipuri instead of aalu/chhole. Misalpav was tasty too, it comes with rassa as separate and we can adjust our taste accordingly. In dessert, had basundi and it was really creamy and loved it. Staff is super welcoming and very helpful. Ambience is great too, definitely looks like some maratha royal place. Overall best maharashtrian food experience so far in US.

Great maharastrian place! Prawn koliwada is very authentic, macchi curry was really good (fresh fish), kolhapuri chicken curry was okay. Bajra Bhakri was good and they have Solkadi (almost hits the spot). Overall great experience, it’s a must try!

The food is delicious and made fresh. I love going to dinner at Swaraj and recently went to lunch to try their thali. I highly recommend trying their thali during lunch. You get to try several items and you can't go wrong. I have tried the fish, chicken, and goat thali, both were so good. Our waiter Ankush was very friendly. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants to have Indian food.

R
Rashmi Jadhav

Swaraj is my favorite Maharashtrian restaurant in the Bay. Their vada pav is the closest to authentic Maharashtrian vada pav that I have tasted in the States. Kothimbir Vadi is my second favorite dish at this restaurant. I have tried most of their curries, and they are all delicious.

This place is awesome. We visited for lunch on a long weekend Monday and all the tables were taken. They have thali options for lunch and also an ala carte menu. Hardeep was our server and he is the best.. He informed us in advance that they had less servers and the service will be slow. We appreciated him being frank about it and didn’t mind waiting. However, our service was fast and we did not have any issue. Even though he was busy waiting on a lot of tables, he made sure to pay attention to everyone. We ordered vada pav, pav bhaji, kanda bhajji, sol kadhi, piyush, anjeer kulfi and basundi. Everything was great but I strongly recommend trying kanda bhajji, piyush, and the desserts. I will be a regular here for sure. Kudos to the entire team.

I was here with extended family for lunch. My first time here and being a Puneri I was curious. The ambience gives a maharashtrian vibe with the posters of RaniLaxmiBai, Jijamaata, the warli painting, the sketches of pandhari varkari... All that felt nostalgic. The menu card was interesting as it reminded olden days of letters that used to travel across kingdoms. It's a vast menu with appetizers, soups and salads, vegetarian, non-vegetarian and fish items specially coming from Maharashtrian cuisine as well as Malvan/Konkan side of flavors too. I started with sol kadi for a drink, others ordered beer called beera, appetizers we ordered kande bhaji and kothimbirichi vadi - both were very tasty. To be easy we ordered thali - mutton and chicken. The thali comes with rassa which comes from the meat that you chose (chicken or mutton), one veg sabzi on the sides, buttermilk, koshimbir, loncha, papad, chicken/ mutton curry , poli, fresh salad, kothimbir vadi, rice and shrikhand as dessert. It's a complete meal as you can see and was very filling by the time we finished eating shrikhand. If you pay in cash you do get a 5% discount as well. Overall, a great experience. The servers wear an orange vest which reminds you of stories from Shivaji's Darbar , the one thing missing was the topi . I enjoyed it and will definitely want to try other items from their menu. It is spicy so if you love spicy food then you must try and more spicier one is if it's Kolhapuri cuisine. I will recommend it as this is for vegetarians and meat lovers too. They do have a kids menu as well.

Lovely ambience though little noisy. Light instrumental lndian music will be great. Kanda bhaji and sabudana Vada were excellent. Even the portions of vegetables were quite good. Parathas a little more oily. Should provide vinegar onions and Pickles with main course dishes. Basundi and Anjeer Kulfi were very nice. Need to improve service time particularly during peak hours. One can benefit 10%discount if payment is in cash. Also need to add more veg varieties. Non veg options are more. Worth for repeat visit..

Visited this place on a friends recommendation. Very delicious food! If you are looking for authentic maharashtrian dishes and the best Pav bhaji you have ever had head straight to Swaraj! Couldn’t take pics of the dishes but we will be back when we are in the Bay Area again.

Authentic Maharashtrian Restaurant! Only had starters and beverages on this visit. Vada paav, kothimbir vadi, chai, sol kadhi and basundi were delicious. Ambiance is really good and they play pretty good Marathi songs in the background too. Overall great experience.

Awesome Maharastrian Food! Highly recommended and A must visit Maharastrian food place in the Bay Area. Ambience of the place is really nice and reflect south Indian - Maharastrian traditions. It has great Maharastrian food , I have visited the Swaraj Food Truck in Milpitas and especially liked the special Vada pav and misal. This restaurant is an extension of the food truck with amazing ambience and a more amazing variety of Maharashtrian food. Ambience and amazing Marathi songs in background gives real Maharastrian swaraj feel. Food : Food is really tasty and has authentic spice and Maharastrian taste. Really liked Vada pav and sabudana Vada in appetizers. In main menu - Misal and tawa panner was really special , liked the seva bhaji taste as well. All sweats are amazing , enjoyed the shrikhand there. Place has lot of parking space so that nice. Cash is preferred (10% discount) so try to get cash before you go there. Again Highly recommended and A must visit Maharastrian food place in the Bay Area.

This is a rare Indian restaurant serving authentic Maharashtrian cuisine in the Bay area. The decor makes you recount the days of Shivaji Maharaj We had Kanda bhaji (onion fritters), prawns koliwada and sol kadi for starters and sukha kaleji (liver dry curry), mutton malvani and bhakri with sol kadi and piyush in the main course. Except the Kanda bhaji all other items were assal Maharashtrian in taste and flavour. It seemed that the restaurant was not fully staffed, nevertheless, the lady serving us did an excellent job in understanding and meeting our requirements Parking is available on the adjacent plot and the toilets are clean.

Good food with traditional Indian decor. You can try the Thalis or some of the specialties. We enjoyed the shrimp and fish koliwada along with their chicken and mutton entrees. Spacious and lots of parking available

S
Sayali M

We tried the kolhapuri chicken and malwani mutton. The taste is as close as it gets to authentic Maharashtrian taste compared to all other Maharashtrian places in the bay area. The misal was not as good but would recommend the place for curries. The atmosphere is pretty impressive and very cozy. Myst try!

I'm not too familiar with Indian food, but our waiter was very patient with us and helped explain the dishes. Everything is delicious! Appetizers were okay: - Kanda Bhajji - Sabudana Vada All the main entrees were delicious!❤️ - Tawa Chicken (Very flavorful!) - Vangyache Bharit (Smoky, flavorful eggplant🍆) - Kolhapuri Mutton (4/10 spiciness🌶️) - Kokani Goat Curry (Creamy!🍛) We ended the meal with the Piyush drink and it's absolutely delicious, especially if you like cardamon and enjoy desserts that are not overly sweet! I'll definitely be back again!

what a fabulous experience dining in Bay Area. Maharashtrian cuisine, we ordered many dishes and everything was really good. Vada Pav really topped the list. - They were really busy so service was little slow but I didn't mind sitting there longer enjoying the ambinece. Ankush was our server, very nice and attentive.

Oct 31 2025: Food and service were amazing. But this restaurant has a problem as you exit the parking lot. There are trailers right outside to the left. This blocks the view when you get out of the parking lot on to El.Camino. I almost got hit by an oncoming car because of the blind spot caused by this RV. (See photo in review) Update: Mar 8 2024 Went for lunch and enjoyed the wonderful hospitality there with the excellent lunch options. Service was taken care of by Mansi and team. We ordered the Vadai Pav, Sol Kadhi (Kokum Lassi), Kadak Chai, Tawa Pulav and finished with the Fig Kulfi. I had ordered the sabudana Vada as well. The the crust on the water was very hard for us and hence had to return it. Since there were no other options that we preferred for replacement, the staff took it off our tab so we don't have to pay. The service recovery was very effective. Kudos to them. Special mention for the Sol Kadhi here. Very yummy!! This is a great place for enjoying excellent Maharashtrian cuisine in a great setting. Service is good and the place is spacious to accommodate larger groups. They have an amazing range of appetizers and entrees covering both vegetarian and meat options. Some of the dishes tend to be slightly high on the "Hot 🌶️ Pepper" scale. So exercise caution and discuss with the host or hostess about your preference before ordering. Today, our group ordered Sabudana vada, Vanguache Bharit (roasted eggplant similar to Bhaingan Bharat), Chapati and Mumbai Tawa Pulav. We started the appetizer (Sabudana Vada) with a cutting chai. The Tawa Pulav was a decent portion and we had leftovers to take home. The eggplant was just enough for the three of us but quite sufficient. The food was amazing. In spite of the hot pepper scale being high on the eggplant dish, we absolutely enjoyed the food. In case you find the food hot, do ask them for some lime wedges to splash on the food which helps reduce the heat. Recommend going early or making a reservation as it might get crowded on Fridays and weekends. Restrooms are plenty and very clean. (Bonus points!). Plenty of parking to accommodate larger crowds. Highly recommend this place.

Good Indian restaurant offering Maharashtrian Kankani and Kolhapuri dishes. They have put good efforts in creating the patriotic theme with the decor on the walls of the restaurant, Pictures of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Rani Laxmi, Jijamata. Placed Shield and Sword on the walls. Food quality is very good. Top of the chart for us was Mumbai style Vada Pav. Although, we're late in visiting the restaurant before service closure at night they entertained us. We placed all order at once and they served it quickly.

Excellent Maharashtrian cuisine and service. We had vada pav, roti, fish Koliwada, rice, and surmai masala, which were all delicious. Wonderful ambiance. They offer a bar counter where you can get Indian premium beer and other drinks.

Mouth watering food, authentic taste and great ambience! True taste of Maharashtra. Saoji chicken is finger licking, little spicy but their quantity huge. Solkadhi was absolutely refreshing! Prawns koliwada was okayish. Bajri was great too. Service was quick too, servers were attentive.

Been here multiple times. It is pure Maharashtrian cuisine with amzing interior. You can noticed all the decore elements related to Maharashtrian culture. Usually busy on weekends so service becomes little slow but they provide good service and yummy Maharashtrian food. I go for Saoji mutton, fish fry, and Solkadhi. But they also have tasty Kolhapuri chicken, Konkani mutton, Malvani chicken, Bhaji etc etc. Special thanks to Gayatri for great service.

Delicious Indian particularly maharashtra n food with authentic taste. All the snacks options are worth trying. We had lunch at this place and also took vadapav sabudana vada as takeout. Misal pav and thali was amazing

V

The food is on point here!! The sabudana vada is fried to perfection - crispy on the outside and nicely cooked inside. The Misal brings back memories! Prawns, fish koliwada is mast masaledar. Malvani Prawns is super delicious. Shrikhand sooo good! And the spicy masala thaak is the bomb! We've tried majority of the items on the menu, you can't go wrong. Palak has been the server there for a while and she's nothing but amazing! Great service, top of her game! Super attentive to detail and remembers her customers and their favorite meals. So glad this restaurant exists! Closest Maharashtrian meal to home.

It was great experience visiting Swaraj. Chicken lollipop tasted same like we get in Mumbai which is hard to find in bay area. Saoji chicken curry had good flavour too.Our server Shailesh was very friendly and welcoming. We will definitely come back to try other items on the menu.

Very good Maharashtrian food. If you like spicy food, do try their Kolhapuri Chicken/Mutton and Saoji Chicken/Mutton, really tasty! One of the top 3 Vada Pav’s in Bay Area (alongside Annapoorna & Honest Vada Paav) Prawns Koliwada is good too and not at all spicy.

Swaraj is one of a kind place that serves authentic Maharashtrian food. Maharashtra is a western state of India, of which Mumbai is the biggest city and India's financial capital. The staff was friendly and the service was quick. Even for a weekday evening the place was full by 7:30pm. By the time we left at about 8, there was a waiting time. So if you have finished your food and paid your bill, you'd better vacate the table as the place is moderate in size and seating capacity is limited. Plenty of veggie options was there as well as meat dishes. Surprisingly, chats like bhel puri were not on the menu. We were recommended by a friend to try the misal pav and we liked it. It was spicy though which I liked a lot. But it might not be for everyone. Sabudana vacation was another recommendation which was good. The mango Lassi was think and flavorful and was absolutely yummy. The chaas (masala buttermilk) was another drink which was good. Overall, a definite place to revisit to try the other menu items.

Good menu - Many authentic maharashtrian items(as per my maharashtrian friend)! Wonderful service. They were checking up on us frequently. We ordered - Piyush, Tambda Rassa(served with a fried pav and onions), Fish Koliwada, Hirava Chicken, Bhakri, Chapati. Every item’s taste was really good. Few items were spicy(authentic - just like how they should be)! A little expensive than the food truck in Milpitas, which is understandable as it is a proper restaurant and would have costs. On the plus side this restaurant has a big menu to choose from, compared to the food truck. Ambience was really great. Restrooms were clean.

If one word could describe this restaurant, it would be authentic. Offering Maharashtrian cuisine, Swaraj has done an excellent job capturing the essence of Maharashtrian culture both in its food and ambience. The decor represented the roots of Maharashtra and the music played in the background provided an insight into the arts. The food was well done. As someone who grew up with these some of these dishes at home on a regular basis, it was refreshing to see my home cuisine at a restaurant and served with a sense of authenticity. To start us off, we got Kanda Bhujia, which was fried to a crispy perfection. Following that, the vada pav plate had just the right flavors and the spice mix just made sense. For the mains we tried the Misal Pav and Sev Bhaji. The Misal Pav was served in a cute mini bucket, as it is in the motherland. The Pav's had their own spices on them, and the combination of flavors was very close to Misal Pav you'd get in Maharashtra. The Sev Bhaji was pretty good as well, a bit different from what I'm used to, but I won't complain about the unique take on a personal favorite. Both were kinda spicy but that's just part of the experience. For the final main, we also ordered the Mumbai Tawa Pulao, which, in comparison to the other two, felt plain. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, especially with the raita and papad that was served on the side, but it was certainly not as spicy as the other two dishes. Service was excellent, and the staff did a good job and were quick with the food.

Amazing Maharastrian Food! Have been a regular of the the Swaraj Food Truck in Milpitas and was wanting to try out the restaurant. The ambience of the place is really amazing. Totally lives up to the Swaraj feel. Plus amazing Marathi songs playing which adds to the mood. And coming to the food, its amazing as usual. All appetizers and the main course items are really good as well. A must visit place in the Bay Area.

We had a great experience eating food here. The atmosphere and the vibes are really great. It has a lot of Maharashtrian touch. We ate the vada pav; it's really good and puran podi was also really well made. Definitely recommend them both. Also try Sol Kadhi and Tea

Delicious food! We enjoyed Vada Pao, Pao bhaji, Piyush, mayur, veg kolhapuri, veg Maratha, and Jowar Bhakri. Everything was delicious!! Each dish in the menu has spice rating, and their spicy is pretty spicy so do pay attention to that when ordering.

Best Maharashtrian food I’ve tried in the Bay Area! I’ve tried Maharashtrian food at many restaurants around the Bay Area, but this one truly stands out as the best so far. 1) Pav Bhaji – Absolutely amazing. It wasn’t just smashed potatoes like most places. You can taste the depth of flavors, spices, and proper bhaji texture—just the way it should be. 2)Vada Pav – Hands down the best Vada Pav in the Bay Area. Perfectly spiced vada, soft pav, and that authentic Mumbai taste. 3) Misal – Full of flavor, well-balanced spice, and very satisfying. 4) Veg Pulao & Raita – Loved this combo. The rice grains were perfectly cooked and well-flavored, and the raita felt so comforting—something I’d genuinely enjoy back home in Maharashtra. The ambience inside is also very nice, clean, and comfortable, which made the dining experience even better. Overall, the food, taste, and vibe made it a place I truly enjoyed. If you’re craving authentic Maharashtrian food, this restaurant is a must-try. I’ll definitely be coming back! 🙌

Swaraj serves truly authentic Maharashtrian/Marathi food..the kind that’s almost impossible to find in the US. Their vada pav is unbeatable; I don’t think I’ve had such a flavorful, spicy, perfectly balanced vada pav anywhere in the country. One bite instantly brought back my Mumbai vada pav memories. The mutton was on another level..rich, bold, and cooked just right. The misal, usal, and other dishes were all fantastic. Yes, the food leans toward the spicier side, but real Kolhapuri food has to be spicy, and they get it absolutely right. I’m from DC and I literally carried a few vada pavs back for friends because it’s that good. I also tried their food truck, and that was amazing as well..same great taste, just a more limited menu.

Edit: Visited twice recently. This time we ordered Veg Thali. Quantity was ample. Potato bhaji was excellent. Veg peshwai was delicious as well. Overall food was tasty and fresh. Chapati could have been better. Serving time was 15 mins. I recommend visiting this place for trying out marathi food, preferably at a less crowded time. Original Review: Service was horrible. Had to wait about an hour for the food. We ordered very less spicy pav bhaji, and told that its for a child. They served a very spicy one, plus added red chilly chutney on the pav!

Authentic place for Maharashtrian food items. This restaurant has seating for around 50 people, but at time there might be a wait time up to an hour. That might tell you about the quality of the food here. There is also a live paninpuri counter.

Fantastic taste of Maharashtrian food here at Swaraj! after being bored with Punjabi and South Indian restaurants in the area, it was refreshing to try cusine which I otherwise eat at home. Very happy to start with Vada Pav..Street food from Maharashtra...very authentic taste and as dish had 2 pieces ita filling as well. Chicken lollipop was delicious and so was Misal Pav and Sabudana Wada..keep it up team Samrath. Ambience is not the best something to improve but I dont care as its food that matters most!

We tried a variety of dishes, including Pandhara Rassa, Saoji Chicken, Bhakri (both rice and bajra), Rava Fried Fish, and Solkadhi. While the Pandhara Rassa was a bit disappointing, resembling more of a French onion soup, the Saoji Chicken was a definite winner, paired excellently with the soft rice bhakri. The Bajra bhakri was alright, and the Rava Fried Fish was good, albeit less spicy than expected. The Solkadhi provided a refreshing end to the meal. Overall, the highlight for us was definitely the Saoji Chicken and rice bhakri combination.

Nice spacious sit down restaurant for authentic Marathi cuisne. We tried sabudana vada, chai, Piyush, buttermilk, vada pav, chicken kohlapuri, rotis and barli vangi. They were out of bhakri when we asked for. All the food tasted yumm and authentic. The chicken kohlapuri was very spicy and the vangi was also on the spicy side. Loved the chai and vada pav. The service was decent. Do note that they charge 11.5% service charge by default. Also, if it's a group of 5 or above 15% gratuity is added by default!

I was in the Bay Area for work and one of my friends suggested this authentic maharashtrian restaurant for dinner.I liked the first impression after entering the place with waiters and waitresses dressed in kurta pajama and orange half jackets giving the place the marathi touch. We ordered Saoji chicken curry(spice level 7-8), kolhapuri chicken curry(spice level 6-7) and Tawa chicken for non maharastrian colleague which was on a low spice level. I loved the Saoji chicken curry and felt that it was less spicy than the kolhapuri curry. I would give 5 stars if the bhakris we ordered would be authentic, but we felt like they were similar to the frozen bhakris we get in Indian grocery stores. Overall had a good experience though. Would visit again if traveled to that area.

I recently tried the food truck specializing in authentic Mumbai Vadapav, and it exceeded my expectations. The Chicken Rice Plate had the perfect level of spice, offering a delightful kick, and the taste was exceptional. Additionally, the Bread Pattice emerged as another favorite with its unique flavors. A must-try for anyone craving genuine Mumbai street food!

Staff messed up order even after repeating and confirming. Veg preps were good but meat dishes were very mediocre. Kolhapuri goat curry was disappointing. So was tava chicken. Goat meat was very tough. Curry was good though. Bhakari seemed made from frozen. Chapati was okay. Kothimbir wadi and Kanda bhajji were excellent. So was Basundi. Very thick and creamy.

The food is good. It’s spicy as expected from maharashtrian food. Service was good. It was a little annoying that the server kept picking up dishes and stuff before asking if it was ok to clear.

After reading so many raving reviews decided to travel an hr to try out this place to celebrate our anniversary. The restaurant has its own parking space and if full, street parking is available. Given it was a weekend we had a wait time for about 40mins. The waiting area outside the restaurant is nice with good seating arrangements. The guy had got us mixed up with some other family and placed a couple ahead of us. On enquiring he quickly rectified it by giving us a table within 3-4mins. Tip: Keeping checking to ensure you are not missed or jump upon in the queue. Our server was Hardeep. He was waiting on lot of tables so he seemed to be very busy. Had to remind him for an extra plate, water and also koshimbir. He was courteous enough to quickly inform us on the availability of the items as kitchen was nearing closing. We ordered kanda bhaji - 5/5 It was awesome prawns koliwada -3/5 It was more like popcorn shrimp than koliwada. saoji chicken - 3/5 Given 4 spice level rating on the menu I was expecting it to be sizzling like true saoji. But not at all. I’ll put it under medium spicy. Had high hopes given its a Maharastrian restaurant. bhakri - 4/5 sol kadhi 3/5 It was little bit more salty to my taste palette. They serve the tempered ones. koshimbir 5/5 It was nice and thick unlike the sloppy running ones you get. Plain rice 5/5 Normal basmati rice. Basundi 5/5 Spouse had it and he liked it. They were out of Mutton dishes so arrive early if you want to enjoy those. The prices dont seem to match the online prices(koshimbir and basundi). Did not cross check with the menu when in the restaurant. Realized the mismatch after reaching home. They do serve alcohol. But I think it was closed today as they did not provide alcohol menu on the table and there was no one at the bar. All in all a good and decent restaurant and worth giving a try.

Very authentic maharashtrian food and vibe. We ordered bharli Vangi, Vada pau and Veg Peshwani. Deducting a star because the bharli vangi curry was too fluid and watery. And vada pau was very good. 2nd visit: Loved their Sol Kadhi. Paneer Peshwani was good just a little sweet for my taste. The Tambda Rasa soup was good but had way too much oil.

Great attempt made to attract customers based on ambience. Good quality silverware and seating. I personally liked their Food truck’s taste and menu options better. Staff was interactive, which was really good but seemed a bit excessive at a point (understandable since it’s in soft launch phase). Service charges are included in bill amount, probably they should call this out on their menus. Good food with chill restaurant vibes : This location Craving great food? : Their food truck

Nice traditional and modern decor. Service was ok a bit slow. Menu is pretty extensive and covers a lot of variety of things. The starters we tried (Kanda Bhaji and Sabudana vada) were extra spicy. So we had to ask to tone down the spice level for main course. Main course was pretty good. Dessert menu is very short. Piyush drink was a good thing to order to calm down the spices! Plenty of seating in the dining hall and parking la very convenient too!

Food is delicious. Our table ordered sabudana vada, chicken rajhans and Konkani goat curry and everyone liked their dish. Chairs were pretty dirty though, the restaurant owner should consider cleaning them since it feels very unhygienic to sit on them. Also, please don’t serve frozen parathas consider making Fresh food. If people have to eat frozen parathas they don’t have to come to restaurants they can eat that at home.

Absolutely tasty food. Authentic maharashtrian cuisine. Great ambience. The only concern was about the price and portion of the chapati/paratha/bhakri. Chapati/ paratha/bhakri size was too small as compared to normal and it was not worth the price.

I’ve been there in March 1st week with my colleagues from work. Restaurant is full of vibe and taste is good. Menu has items with wide range in prices, i feel entrées are little expensive but Thali is reasonable and tummy filling. Would definitely recommend this place worth visiting another time. Service can be better, not satisfied. Important note: They have 10% discount if you have receipt from Patel brothers and 5% on cash payment as of March 1st week, 2024.

Solid authentic Maharashtrian food. We got the weekend special , "kolambi bhaat" . This is a shrimp pulao, that was almost perfectly cooked. The traditional dal was excellent as well .. The rest of the food was fine ..the rava shrimp and kolawadi shrimp were a bit underwhelming, and the amrakhandi puri was average. Highly recommend.

We visited Swaraj restaurant recently and liked the ambience. It's warm, welcoming and quite cosy. The food and decor is Maharashtrian. Service is prompt, food is tasty. There is good parking available and the place is wheelchair friendly.

Had a good time here, the ambience is very impressive and the servers work hard to keep the place upbeat. However, I felt it’s a bit understaff. Cons - service is a bit slow and the servers are still finding there way. The bill had clear signs for 5% discount and 5% additional for paying by cash, but they clearly said we have to both to get 10% and that left a bad taste. Pros - good taste, good ambience not super pricey and almost authentic maharashtrian food. Staff was genuinely working hard. Will try to go back here for sure.

This is as good as eating Indian food in an Indian restaurant IN INDIA…it’s THAT authentic! And it’s the best Maharashtrian food (food from the Indian state of Maharashtra) I’ve tasted in California Bay Area. My wife and I visited it last night and the first indication that the restaurant was good was the crowd. We had to wait for the table and it was worth it. We had Kothimbir vada, Sabudana vada, and Koliwada Fish for appetizers with Sol Kadi (yummmmmy). For the main course we had Mutton Sukkha, Kolhapuri Chicken, and Kaleji (goat liver) masala for dinner. We had to pack half of it to go. We definitely plan on going back! Highly recommended if you’re Maharashtrian or not…even if you’re not Indian buy love the spicy food! Kudos to Ganesh Gausar for this food from home that brings back so many wonderful memories of my childhood. We met him at the restaurant and he was such a charming personality. Very down to earth. He’s not just a businessman, he is a renowned chef himself having worked all over the world! Go and try the food and you won’t regret it.

Food and service were very good. Mohit, our server was friendly, efficient and patient with our large and multiple orders. I especially enjoyed their chai, kothimbir vada, chicken sukha and malvani chicken. Special shoutout to their Piyush. I don’t know how authentic Maharastrian any of the food is but I definitely thought it was very tasty. The tawa paneer and paneer rajhas were alright though, I rather try other veg dishes next time. Roti was pretty standard. Rice bhakri went well with the non veg items although l was told typically it should be more substantial but I was satisfied. The only major negative today was that the music was very loud, hence all the patrons were trying to talk over the music (including us) to make ourselves heard, in turn making the entire atmosphere chaotic and deafening. This is a small-medium indoor restaurant so the noise generated for the size of such an establishment wasn’t pleasant. Hope the owners take note.

Best thing here is Mango Lassi. It's made fresh and is amazing. I liked the Rava fried prawns (shrimp) a lot and it was my favorite item here after mango Lassi. The surmai fry is also fried with Rava style but it wasn't as good as prawns. The Saoji mutton had too much garam masala in it burning the back of my throat. It was good but not tasty. Chapatis here are decent. Liked the masala tea here as well!! Go for the mango Lassi if made fresh. Absolutely recommended.

Good authentic maharashtrian restaurant. Tried padhara rassas and malvani chicken and bhakri. Ambience is good, old style wicker chair and decorations reminding of maharashtrian homes.

We like this restaurant because it serves the best vada pav. We also tried their Misal Pav, mumbai tawa pulao. They were tasty and close to Mumbai Misal. Piyush and Mango lassi were amazing and on point. Probably avoid Pani puri, i don't know why it doesn't taste like a regular Pani puri. Chilli paneer and other dishes on the menu are worth a try. Masala taak is amazing too.

My Marathi friends and I visited this place, and it was a delightful experience. The ambiance was authentic, giving off a warm and inviting vibe typical of a good local Indian restaurant. The service was friendly, though I found it a bit slow at times and unresponsive. We indulged in a variety of dishes, including khanda bhaji, mutton soup(tamda rasa), Bhakri, chapathi, Kokani mutton, kolaphuri chicken, weekend spl biryani, and malai kofta. The soup(rasa) was a standout, bursting with flavor and a perfect balance of spice and sweetness. It was both soothing and refreshing. The onion bhaji were fresh and flavorful, with a delightful crunch. The kholapuri mutton was spicy and had a satisfying kick, while the chicken was mild and flavorful. The rotis were freshly made, soft, and warm, adding to the overall dining experience. To conclude our meal, we enjoyed a refreshing glass of sol khadi, which perfectly complemented the flavors of the dishes.

Food was awesome. If you like maharashtrian food, this is one of the good places in the Bay area. The beauty is they have separate oil for vegetarians, at least that's what communicated to me during my visit. Been couple of time already.

Super excited to find a maharashtrian food nearby and I was not disappointed. First, the settings is nice for sit down and have a nice meal. No rush no crowd, at least when i went there a few times during weekday lunch. I enjoyed all the food I ordered and let me tell you when they said spicy it's really spicy! I considered myself as having high spicy tolerance and I immensely enjoy the spicy food here with sweat dripping down but couldn't stop eating. I never had a Saoji mutton anywhere else, so it was my first time tried it here and I love it! Another time I ordered the Kolhapuri mutton and it was amazing as well. I'm glad they serve good Indian beer here to help cool down all these spicy dishes!

One of the best Marathi restaurants in Bay area. The taste is ALMOST as good as original Maharashtrian cuisine of all regions. Chicken is fresh and the saoji chicken bhaji was good. Zhinga masala could hVe been better ( it tasted sweeter due to onion gravy) Chicken biryani was surprisingly good. Solkadhi was salty. Recommended to try it once and decide for yourself!

I dined in for lunch at Swaraj Indian Restaurant and had a decent experience. The vada pav was very authentic and tasted great, definitely a highlight. The prawn koliwada, however, was a bit soggy for my liking. Both the chapati and bhakri were good, fresh, and complemented the meal well. The chicken kolhapuri was spicy and flavorful, just as expected. Overall, a decent place with some hits and misses.

Went on a weekday evening for dinner . There was a lot of crowd after 7pm We were able to get seated pretty quickly The ambience reflects Maharashtra’s native vibes of different locations there Coming to food - There is a great selection of appetizers. We ordered the surmai fish and the chicken lollipop Both were really good and highly recommend eating when hot For the alcohol - they only have beer and wine . The collection was limited and a few were also out of stock For main course we had Kohlapur’s chicken which was super spicy, when they mention spicy - this is the real deal . Overall service was pretty decent , the place is clean and well maintained and definitely would go back again

Good Maharashtrian food. Nice decor. Great service. Paratha was frozen Deep paratha. They don't tell you with the mobile payment device that 11.25 % service charge is already added. You end up adding additional tip and that becomes a lot. Little deceiving.

Most of the dishes we ordered: Mishal pav, pav bhaji, vada pav tasted good but the Tawa pulav was really bad- no flavour, tasted like plain white rice!

Food Heaven for Maharashtrian food fans. Nicely converted the Palamuru Grill vibes to Maharashtrian. Marathi songs add up to the vibe. We ordered Fish Koliwada, Kolhapuri Mutton, Mumbai Tawa Pulao and Poori with Sol Kadhi and Shrikhand. Food was tasty. Totally hit the spice levels. Liked the pricing of poori, 3 piece for just $4. Shrikhand was a let down. Expected it to be little flowy. But instead it’s like glue with overloaded kesar. There is temporary price adjustment of 11.5% added on top of the menu price and sales tax. Get cash if you are interested to grab 10% discount. Staff were not pleasant and friendly. Especially the lady who took the order. Would recommend even with the not so pleasant experience.

The accessories and items places in unusual ways have an impact on the decor. The pani puri was good and the pav bhaji with its mashed vegetable gravy was good too. The kanda bhaji was fried to crispy perfection. The parathas were soft, flaky, and perfect and the anjeer kulfi was thick, creamy and delicious! However, I wish I could tone down the veg peshwai, it was way too spicy. Later my stomach felt like it was burning inside! The staff were very particular and attentive to our needs.

My experience with Maharashtrian cuisine at Swaraj left me with mixed feelings. While the food was average, it fell short of the bold flavors and authentic taste I had hoped for. The menu offered a variety of traditional dishes, but their execution lacked finesse. The Misal Pav lacked the fiery kick I anticipated, and the Malwani chicken curry was just okay, lacking the perfect balance of spices. To make matters worse, the kothimbir wadi was initially served cold, and though they replaced it, the lack of empathy towards our concerns was disappointing. While the service was satisfactory, the ambiance could definitely use some improvement. Overall, the dining experience was average, leaving room for improvement to truly showcase the rich flavors of Maharashtrian cuisine.

We had ordered for a Piyush, Pav Bhaji, Kolhapuri mutton with Roti and bhakri. The piyush tasted great. Loved the drink as it was thick, delicious, and with bits of pista as well. The Pav Bhaji was very disappointing. Based on my experience of having the Bhaji in food trucks, other restaurants and home, the one i had here felt more like a sambar with extra masala. Kolhapuri mutton was fine. It was so greasy that it was hard to feel the taste of the actual masala while having it with roti. I think it goes better with rice. The staff over there seemed surely helpful. The decor was good.

Pros: - Vada pav was very tasty! The vada was hot and of right texture. - sabudana vada and paneer were good. Cons: - Non veg kohlapuri items were just okayish. The curry from the truck tasted better - The rice which you have to order separately were harder. Could have been cooked longer. - The waiter didn’t cater to us for a long time.

We were quite excited to try Swaraj after recommendation from a friend. The decor was soothing and cozy which I loved. Great Menu and quick service. We ordered quite a variety of drinks, appetizers and mains and overall food tasted okish. Solkadhi and sweet lassi were the best. Pav bhaji & pani puri were really bad which was disappointing. Misal was average. Wada pav was good but nothing extraordinary. The papad had a very cheap oil taste. Prawn kolivada was very basic. Overall I was disappointed. They have a lovely restaurant, reasonable prices, great location but they need to work on both taste and quality.

For VEGETARIAN: NOOOOO. Food were below average. I ordered mumbai tawa pulao and it was just turmeric rice with not fresh carrot and very little cheese toppings costed $12.99 plus tax. I also ordered pav bhaji and again a big disappointment. Not recommending for vegetarian. My non vegetarian friends told me they liked the non veg food but the quantity was super low. 18% gratuity for 5 or more hours which sucks. 18%????????? 18% gratuity plus 7.25% (or 9%) taxes so you pay 25% over the bill if go with 5 people. Nah!! I will happily pass this restaurant.

R

For the ambience I think it’s ok very basic. Service is very sad as all the server are with sad face and don’t assist properly. I ordered Hirwa Chicken which was tasteless did not like at all and second was Chicken Sukha which was literally ok. I visited twice but both the time the food taste is not good. Instead swaraj food truck taste is awesome. Please don’t try to go here and waste time and money😓😩

R
Rohit Khirapate

Overhyped at best or maybe I just caught them on a bad day in the kitchen. The Vada Pav had the right authentic flavor, but it was clearly refried and not freshly made. The Vangyache Bharit was a complete miss: no smoky flavor, no spice, nothing close to how it should taste. Honestly, except for the nice décor, the food was underwhelming for a restaurant positioning itself as 'Maharashtrian specialty cuisine.' To the server’s credit, he did offer a replacement, but since he insisted this is how it should taste, I chose not to trouble him further. If you’re seeking real Maharashtrian flavors, you may leave disappointed

S
Siddharth Shah

Have been a frequent visitor since last 2 years but the quality is constantly degrading. Had taken a friend who was visiting just for the misal pav and it was really horrible. Misal was literally drowning in oil and taste had gone down hill too. I hope it was an one off and the taste improves in future.

S
Siddharth Harshe

Overall food experience was quite underwhelming. Vada Pav and Malvani Chicken were the only standouts. Even on a weekday, service was extremely slow with long waiting times between ordering and receiving main course. We also had to wait nearly 25–30 minutes for the desserts, and that too only after reminding the staff multiple times. The moong dal halwa tasted more like sooji sheera rather than authentic moong dal halwa.

a

We had fish, saoji mutton and bhakri, paratha and misal pav. We loved the fish and misal pao, as usual it was hot and spicy. But, the mutton was a downer this time. There was this strong smell in the mutton which made it impossible to eat

A
Anisha Vinod

We ordered take out and arrived at the restaurant to pick up our order on time. However the order wasn’t ready and was told to wait for a few minutes. After waiting patiently for 20 additional minute while the busy period settled,I inquired about the order and was impatiently waved away by the manager saying that they are currently making it. Another 20 minutes pass by and I made another inquiry and was again impatiently told to take a seat. My husband and brother decide to walk in to see what’s taking so long and then the manager changes his tone and starts to get nervous about our order. One server told us it’s 3 minutes away. Another told us 10 more minutes. It turns out they had sold out of the dishes (even though I watched them serve the same dish to folks who had walked in after us) and they now wanted us to wait some more. We ended up walking out without our order after a 50 minute ordeal. The whole decision to be unforthcoming with how long our order would take and only change their approach when the men walked in was deceitful and sexist. Not to mention the shamelessly misleading statements about our order being prepared when in reality they had not even begun. Being busy is not an excuse to lie to customers. They should have informed us honestly of the situation with an updated wait time. I will not be supporting such a dishonest and disrespectful establishment.

Had been to this place few times now. Tried Saoji mutton, chicken dishes, fish (pomfret), malwani mutton etc. except vadapav everything else is below ordinary. Every time i go with high hopes and always disappointed. I hope owner takes note of this and tastes dishes personally.. mutton was absolutely rubbery, just making dish spicy doesn’t make it authentic…

P
Phil Lindert

Called and ordered two Bav Phaji - they said it would be twenty minutes. 50 minutes later (and being told many times that it was still coming) they then told us it was sold out and they were going to make it fresh and it would be ten minutes. Long story short - instead of being honest they just kept lying for no real reason.

V
Vinayak Namjoshi

We arrived at the restaurant with my 20month at 8:55, the host told us that he cant make us sit because we wont be able eat food fast enough to finish by 9:30. What kind of restaurant forces customers to finish food for their own convenience? The host was so rude that he didnt even consider making us sit and let us order. Never coming to such pathetic service restaurant. I would give a zero if that was an option. Worst part was the host was laughing and smiling about this that being apologetic

T
Tejinder Singh Gill

Its not at all hygiene, all the flies were flying on the food and one of it fall in the drinking water glass. Came with friends., at start left good with the atmosphere. We order panipuri, kholapuri mutton, saoji chicken curry, rava fish fry, bhakri, naan roti and chicken dum biryani. We can say food taste was similar to other restaurants not that much different. The service is disgusting, had to wait around 20mins so waiter can come and take order. Will not recommend at all.
