Opinions de Johnny's Harborside Santa Cruz
A Hidden Gem by the Wharf - Johnny’s Harborside Johnny’s Harborside is a true coastal treasure! From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm, familiar ambiance that feels like coming home. The staff is incredibly friendly, attentive, and always eager to make your visit memorable. The food? Simply outstanding. The oysters were a highlight—fresh, succulent, and perfectly paired with a splash of lemon, salt, horseradish, and vinegar. Every bite tasted like the ocean in its finest form. The beer was ice-cold and refreshing, an ideal match for the flavorful seafood dishes. The charm of Johnny’s doesn’t end at the food. The views of the wharf are delightful, offering a front-row seat to the daily buzz of fishermen unloading their catch to be prepared and served fresh upstairs. It’s a lively scene that adds authenticity and character to the experience. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Johnny’s Harborside is a must-visit. Great food, cheerful atmosphere, and a sense of community that makes you want to linger. I can’t wait to go back!
Y’all. I know this place used to be lame. I was really bummed the last time I came here prior to the new chef. Johnny’s rocked my palate tonight in all the right ways. Good god. Do it. Best seafood I’ve had in town in ages. Just ask them to soften the butter if you order the bread.
Have eaten here twice since the new chef took over the kitchen and loved our meals both times. The menu is a little limited but, I feel, it's better to concentrate on fewer items than try to offer a plethora of dishes. Service was exemplary with our wait person politely checking on us often. People rave about the views so, if you like looking at moored boats, fishing tackle and big plastic containers, then you'll be very happy.
Don't sleep on Johnny's. We went in after YEARS following a terrible food/service experience there and were incredibly impressed. The clam chowder? Best in Santa Cruz. Fresh, brothy, clam-full and served in a pretty platter rather than a bowl which really classes up the experience. Kids meals are served with top-notch fries or a professionally-plated medley of sauteed seasonal squash and broccolini - not a sad, wet carrot stick in sight. Cocktails on point, and overall you can't beat a good meal overlooking the harbor lights on a foggy evening. TVs at the bar make this a nice spot to get a good meal while watching a game. Will return (to enjoy without kids next time!).
Have not been at Johnny’s for over a year but tried it again and was pleasantly surprised at how everything was perfect this time! Halibut and corn risotto were cooked to perfection. Burrata appetizer was so good! Service was welcoming, none of the previous aggressive upselling. I will definitely go again and bring friends. Thanks for dialing in a great experience!!
What a gem! We were looking for some seafood for our family, and were pleasantly surprised by the freshness and quality of the food! Also, great value and super hospitable staff. The fish and chips are generously portioned, and delicious. The grilled halibut with the corn risotto was excellent and devoured in no time. The fried brussel sprouts and calamari were appetizing and quickly enjoyed by all. The smoked beet and kale salad was scrumptious. We ended the meal with petite key lime pie in a mason jar which was “superb!” New chef and menu, an absolute must-go!
We ordered the daily special of raw oysters—absolutely delicious! We also tried the fresh halibut, brought in straight from the boat; it was perfectly cooked and tasted amazing. Their appetizers are always creative, and while the execution sometimes varies, they get high marks for originality. We don’t frequent places that feel redundant, so this spot keeps us coming back. Service is consistently good, and the view of the harbor is spectacular, making it a fun place to enjoy beautiful summer days. The vibe is casual, with a lively bar full of regulars. For parking, there’s a paid meter conveniently near the restaurant, with an additional machine at the far end of the larger lot. If you have some extra time, walk down the harbor on the other side to visit the lighthouse (see photos).
Stopped in for a late lunch with my wife and tried the blue crab stuffed avocado. Ordered the Huli Huli halibut with roasted Bok Choi and wifey ordered the fish tacos. The service was outstanding (I think it was the owner and he showed a lot of pride in the establishment) and the blue crab stuffed avocado was so good I had to order another one. The Bok Choi was delicious, delicious, delicious and the Halibut was cooked perfectly! The plate of fish tacos was huge and a good flavor. Will for sure go back for the food and the view was awesome!
Our first visit hear and we were not disappointed. They offer fresh fish options daily and 3 ways to have them served. I chose the Halibut, Mashed Potatoes and mixed veggies so good! My hubby had the Fish Tacos which he ravee about. Starter was Crab Cakes Highly recommend! The Garlic Bread was good but I expecting more of a sourdough it was french bread. For our anniversary they comped dessert and I chose Creme Brulee. Great Dinner and experience.
This place has delicious food and incredible views of the marina area! It’s lovely to watch out the windows at sunset and keep your eyes open because you may just spot a few sea lions!! The place is a bit expensive but when you combine the amazing view and the delicious, super fresh sea food, it is completely worth it!! The bar area can make the place a bit loud so Fair warning on that but it would be a very romantic place to go at sunset!! Our part of three shared a salad and it was crazy because we still had extra since it was pretty large sized. It was fresh and tasty though! I got the shrimp scampi and garlic bread and boy did it not disappoint!! It was delicious that evening and I had the leftovers for dinner the next night and it was just as good! Thinking about the food again is totally making me hungry for it again!
Our server, she was very pleasant. The oysters were the best I have had since landing in Cali a few days ago. My wife had a burger and it was also very tasty as were the fries. We would have honestly given this a 5 star had the drinks been good. We had a couple of margs and only drank a third of them because NOT good. Overall, a good experience.
I am a self professed Caesar salad snob. Harborside’s Caesar was excellent! It was very fresh and perfectly dressed. I haven’t had a Caesar that good in a long time. The clam chowder was very tasty with a nice creamy texture but was shy on clams. Would I order it again? Absolutely. Is it the best clam chowder I’ve ever had? That would be a no. On the whole, our entire meal was very pleasant, and we would not hesitate to enjoy another meal there!
The place is beautiful and well-located. The service was very good, and the food overall was ok. We ordered the halibut dish with rice and bok choy. Honestly, I was expecting more flavor. The rice was good, but the fish was tasteless, and the bok choy had a burnt taste. We also had the clam chowder, which was very good and flavorful, and the house salad was also excellent. As for the halibut — which came as a recommendation — I wouldn’t recommend it, considering also the price $$$, though maybe it was just an off day.
The food was pretty good. Drinks were good. We decided to come here because Phil's Fish Market was way too busy and crowded. The garlic bread was good. The oysters were fresh and delicious. They were priced well. The cioppino was decent but tasted a little bland to be honest. The seafood Linguine was pretty good, but not great. Something was off about the seasoning and flavors of the dishes. The drinks were strong and delicious. The service was excellent. Our server was friendly and welcoming and knew the menu well. There is parking available in the lot outside, but it is pay to park. The views are great. Great atmosphere. I would recommend this place. Very clean and well kept.
We came here because the online menu said they had scallops and cioppino. They had neither. The atmosphere is extremely noisy. Their oven was not working, so there were no desserts other than ice cream available. The place is very hard to find.
Food isn’t bad but it’s not worth it for the amount they provide. I went for clam chowder with my family and the gave us less than 2 inches of soup in a comically large plate. The price was absurd but the food wasn’t bad and the service was good. Just wish they weren’t afraid of feeding their customers.
Right on the water in the Santa Cruz harbor. It’s really small so make sure to make reservations. The staff is great and the food comes out fast and hot. Everything we got was amazing except the bill! $225 for three people is brutal! The food was good but not that good. BTW the bread is not free!
They claim to be under new management and have a new chef, but the food is very inconsistent and if you ever come on taco Tuesday, you could be waiting over an hour for a simple fish taco. I ordered to Go about a month ago and I wasn’t given any tartar sauce for my fish and chips and the fries were so greasy. The staff refused to give me a refund or make any accommodations.
We reserved the table for 5 at 06:30. We were seated shortly after but nobody approached us or acknowledged us for about 20 minutes. I contacted the hostess and asked her to send us someone and take our orders. We ordered fries, fish and chips, fried calamari and grilled rock fish. The fries like all other food was burnt and had no taste. When server came and asked me how was the food? I told her it was horrible and burnt she said she will tell manager. Nobody came to talk to us or see what quality of food we were served. We paid for our food but left no tip. I do not recommend this place to anyone. The only positive thing about this place was location. The menu on the website is no longer available. When we asked about certain items the server told us they got new chef and had no time to update their website.
I was there with my wife, at ~06:00 PM, on 8th October 2025, order two half dozen of oysters, one regular and one premium, just to compare what is the difference. I’ve tried and actually eat on of the regular oyster which occurs with weird taste, and appear smelly. I give one more try, and was not impressed with second oysters either. I decided not to eat the remaining part of the dish, as I was very suspicious that the cook is not assessing the oysters for the quality and I don’t want myself become poisoned. I mentioned to the waiters that the oyster has weird taste and smells. The waiter feedback was a question on how many of the oysters I experience smelly and offer to replace the exact amount of the smelly oyster with new one. I assume she want me to give another try :)))) This message is for the new customer to beware on the quality assurance to be done by the customer. Do not fully relay on cook. By the way, even with my negative experience. I paid full charge of the dishes and the restaurant not acknowledge they mistake and not offer the discount.
