Me and My Fiancé just went here recently to celebrate our year anniversary and it was delicious. Get the Sardines they don't disappoint!! Duck and Swordfish were perfectly cooked. Hubby and me will definitely be eating here again.

It’s had reservations and were sat promptly upon arrival unlike other restaurants. Service was fast and professional. We ordered mussels, risotto, pierogi and the curry. Everything was delicious. No complaints. Our drinks were also very good, strong and not weak. I highly recommend this spot for a nice dinner.

very pleasantly surprised...didn't know what to expect, I really dislike onions, lol. The food and service is excellent! came here on Thanksgiving. so pleased

Good food, wait staff is a little snotty, bus people were more down to earth, and it's very expensive. $10 per scallop in my meal. four raviolis in another dish. you'll run out of money before you fill your belly. It was nice to find high quality food in this part of NY.

It was a wonderful experience. I took my fiancé for Father’s Day and it was awesome. He loved it, the food was amazing - we enjoyed the Spanish octopus. The drinks were fantastic.

Great experience. Me and my girlfriend had a last minute reservation on a Friday at 7pm and the older male host (front staff manager maybe?) was very accommodating and friendly at arrival. The old farm house is beautiful, quaint and cozy. Really fitting for this area. Almost feels like your attending a private dinner party at a family household. We started with drinks and two appetizers. While we waited we had some bread. Ive worked food service for several years in upscale restaurants so I'm often hard to please. The sardines were phenomenal and absolutely well executed all around! The sweet, acidic and salt was well balanced in this dish and every bite had something the last didn't. The perogies were also very good! They were however a little bland compared to our Sardines. It would have been nice to have a little more filling, a little more black truffle to really make the flavors pop. Otherwise it was perfect. Our dinners were the Duck Breast and Swordfish. Cherry reduction and duck breast is a pretty normal menu item that I've seen and made a lot but this is admittedly better than other dishes that are similar that I've made. The chesnuts and red cabbage was a combo that really made this dish feel unique. Hands down best duck in the area. My girlfriend had the swordfish and she said it was the best she's ever had and she normally doesn't like swordfish because most places overcook it. To top it off we were not rushed at all and got to enjoy ourselves on a Friday night for a hour and a half. Great way to end the work week and we will be back more often. Next time we come back we are going to try the lamb lollipops and maybe tackle a couple of the premium $$$ high end entrees. Quality ingredients always worth the money. Portion is excellent for fine dining.

Diverse menu options; great ambiance in a rustic yet upscale venue; outstanding service! I had the grilled Spanish octopus appetizer which was well prepared and was complemented with the harissa sauce. The vegetable curry with shrimp was very good as well, with a generous amount of shrimp. It was very busy on the Saturday night we went so be sure to make a reservation (and show up in time or you will have to wait.)

What a beautiful place to have a romantic dinner. Servers were really nice and did a wonderful job of making us feel at home. The Duck confi was delicious. Skirt steak could have used a bit more flavor and the drinks were too alcoholic for our taste.

My daughter and I visited a few weeks back and I cannot say enough good things about this establishment. Warm and friendly staff greet you at the door. Because we did not have reservations, we were offered a seat at the bar. Ray the bartender was fantastic! He was attentive, engaging and made some excellent menu suggestions. The food was outstanding and the service beyond that. I highly recommend the Red Onion.

Fantastic dinning experience. The food was amazing, made with quality ingredients and seasoned perfectly. The cocktails were delicious and the wait staff were friendly and attentive. It was a little loud during the peak of service but that didn't dampen the experience. Great place!

This place was perfect! Stayed upstate for my birthday weekend and came here for my birthday dinner and WOW! Best food I’ve had in a very long time. The staff were amazing and the atmosphere was perfect! Will definitely be back when we’re in the area!

Up from the city this weekend and came here on a friends recommendation. Not super picky but I definitely know good food. Place was hopping for a Saturday night but we were able to be seated quickly without a reservation. Menu has a ton of great options for all palettes. we shared the octopus, goat cheese raviolis, And I had the duck as my entree. All were perfect and didn't disappoint whatsoever. My friends were all super happy as well with their dishes. Food came out in a very timely manner as well which was also a plus. Service was friendly, efficient and attentive. All In all, a really great dinner.

Wow! After coming to the Catskills for eight years, my husband and I were looking for a slightly elevated spot for our whole family with our two year old in tow where we could still all enjoy a delicious meal. As two major foodies we were blown away by this meal. The pappardelle and scallops were absolutely melt in your mouth fresh and delicious. My daughter even gobbled up her entire adult size portion of fusilli with butter and cheese. It’s a shame I don’t live in the area as this would definitely be a monthly staple for our family.

E

The food was excellent. The service was phenomenal. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area or visiting. The staff cares a lot and it shows. 10/10

One of the finest meals I've ever had. Everything was just perfect. The duck and scallops were the best I've ever had. Don't miss this place. I would give it six stars if I could!

This is a high-end restaurant with prices to match. The food is delicious, the service impeccable, but expect to pay. The bottle of wine we split was $55, two entrees were $76... Lamb, duck, seafood, fish, beef and in-house made pasta. Not a place to bring kids but a beautiful dining experience with a festive atmosphere that's just a little too expensive for my budget yet deserving a top rating.

This place is fantastic! Food was awesome (both flavor and presentation), service was perhaps the best I've ever seen, and the atmosphere was wonderful. Went during peak fall colors, so the rife up made it even better. It was not cheap, but wasn't outrageous. Great place to bring guests. I'll definitely be going back!

Our waiter was a little shy, (I think he was newer) but nice all the same. We ordered the sauteed calamari, mussels, perrigo and the duck breast. Everything was unique and amazing, except the mussels which were still very good but in a traditional garlic butter sauce. Very elegant looking restaurant inside which was surprising after seeing the rustic overgrown outside. I was traveling from eastern Connecticut and will be in the area two weeks from now and will go out of my way to visit this place again!

All very good!!! We ate like kings, we were well served. There was none of that annoying waiter that comesnto the table every 2 minutes to ask how things are doing. It was a perfect place date. Super cozy and delicious.

Exceeded expectations in all categories. We went with two other couples, we all eat very well in the region and abroad. The prime steak was rare perfection. The ladies loved the seafood. Service and drinks good. Highly recommend.

The Red Onion does a lot well, and it does it consistently: good food, great service, jovial atmosphere inside and calm outside, challenging parking. Always an enjoyable meal and a great way to unwind and connect over food.

P

Consistently excellent food quality. I've been eating here for over 15 years, and Kevin Katz - owner and head chef - has maintained his high standards. His menu always has a few classics, like calves liver or steaks, but balanced with innovative salads or Asian-inspired seafood. The bar drinks meet the high standards of the meals.

This was our second trip after finding this brilliant little gem five years ago on a trip to Woodstock. Just as in our first trip, Red Onion just about defined what good food, good service, good ambience and a good experience is all about. The setting is intimate and romantic, with dark interiors and candlelit tables giving you a sense of being the only patrons in a heavily frequented place. The staff is extremely well trained and work well as a team ensuring our needs are anticipated and served. The back side of the house hits it out of the park with fresh ingredients and tastefully prepared dishes.

Loved the atmosphere. The food was culinary quality and excellent. The night we were there (the menu changes), I had the Long Island Duck, and my husband had the swordfish. The desserts were great. The entire staff was very friendly and attentive. Chadwick was the best! We will be back!

Had an excellent time here at the red onion, service was friendly and attentive, i had the filet mignon and a pork appetizer both of which were delicious and my friend had the scallops which they found to be a tiny bit too salty but j thoroughly enjoyed All in all a great experience, i will have to return at some point and save room for dessert!

If you're ever lucky enough to dine at the Red Onion in Saugerties, make sure to request Matt as your waiter—because if there were a Michelin star for service, he’d already have one. From the moment we sat down, Matt’s attentiveness and charm elevated the entire dining experience. He has an uncanny ability to balance professionalism with warmth, making you feel both pampered and at home. Matt didn’t just take our order; he curated an experience. His knowledge of the menu was exceptional, offering thoughtful suggestions without being overbearing. He knew the wine list inside and out, matching the perfect wine to each coarse with a level of precision you’d expect from a top-tier sommelier. Throughout the meal, he checked in just enough to make sure everything was perfect but never hovered, allowing us to enjoy our time without interruption. What stood out most was his genuine passion for the food and his ability to share that enthusiasm in a way that felt both authentic and engaging. His timing was impeccable, and when one of our dishes needed a slight adjustment, he handled it with such grace and efficiency that we barely noticed the change. By the end of the meal, it was clear that Matt is a true secret ingredient that makes dining along with great food at the Red Onion a memorable experience. If the restaurant is aiming for Michelin recognition, they already have it in Matt—he’s the kind of waiter who makes you feel like you're dining at a world-class establishment, even in a small town. Truly outstanding service.

I had the pleasure of dining at Red Onion, and it was one of the best meals of my life! The food was exceptional, but what really stood out was the service. Matt went above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable experience. His attention to detail, friendly attitude, and professionalism made the evening even more special. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back!

We really enjoyed our meal here. We sat on the cozy side porch. Everything we ate was fantastic, Brussels Sprout appetizer, Duck main course and Shrimp with Thai vegetables. Then the best crème brûlée ever and an espresso for dessert. One of the best meals and times we’ve had. Friendly people, great service, fantastic food.

the Red Onion provides a first-class dining experience...the space is classically comfortable and nice, the service is impeccable, and the food is wonderful - best fine dining I've had in the Woodstock area...the house-made pierogi was excellent and the duck breast was cooked so perfectly that I didn't need a knife to cut it... a shout out to our server Chadwick who went above and beyond to make sure we had a wonder experience! very highly recommended!

P

We loved our meal at The Red Onion. Everything about the experience was excellent. The seating on the lovely porch, the attentiveness of the servers, the little details like replacing the utensils after each course, the scraping of the crumbs off the table (!)...you seldom get this level of service anymore. But of course it is all about the food. We had the Halibut, and the Seafood Risotto. Both delicious. And the brownie sundae took that dessert to the next level. Yes, it is more expensive than what we normally pay, but in this case you really do get what you pay for.

The food is that good. Cured sardines and home made pirogues are a must. Service is great. Make reservations if possible, it does get crowded.

Our meal was exceptional. Appetizers were all great, especially the sardines and onion soup. The mussels were amazing. Same for the main course, with everyone happy with the pastas, burger and fish n chips. Desserts were delicious. To top it off we took advantage of 25% discount on all wines ( I think because it was Tues) to enjoy a really good Cab. Great service. Couldn’t have asked for a better meal celebrating 4 birthdays.

The Red Onion will be a new addition to our rotation in the Catskills. Not far from downtown Woodstock, The Red Onion offers a cozy vibe with delicious cocktails and dishes that will delight anyone. If you're not feeling adventurous but want an amazing meal, check out their burger, it's so good you can't go wrong.

My first time here, and ALL of the food was delicious. Had the perogies, short rib, carrots, and sticky toffee pudding. No complaints about any of it, and would absolutely order the same things again. Drinks were also good, and service was fast and attentive. Will be coming back again!

UPDATE 1/18/26 - STILL EXCELLENT! Best in the area. It is so impressive how Red Onion composes their food. I have no hesitation to try new things here or food I wouldn't normally eat because I KNOW it will be put together with great care and taste delicious. Posting some updated pics. OLD REVIEW - Excellent everything!!! - atmosphere, cocktails, apps, dinners, and espresso martinis!

Excellent experience! The hostess and servers were polite and accommodating. The Parpadelle was superb. The braised cabbage with bacon was tasty as well. My husband’s roasted duck breast with whipped potatoes and carrots had a nice presentation and was delectable.

Don't Miss This Hidden Gem! If you're looking for an unforgettable dining experience, make sure to book a reservation at this restaurant—you won't regret it. The food is simply amazing, with flavors that truly stand out. Every dish is crafted with care and tastes incredible. It's a must-visit, but trust me, you'll want to make a reservation because it's that popular. Definitely worth every bite!

Always a favorite place to have a fabulous meal when I’m home for a visit! The swordfish was delicious and my cousin enjoyed his NY strip steak as well. It’s such a cozy atmosphere especially with the crisp fall air upon us. Another bonus is recognizing familiar faces from when I used to live here. Excellent service made for a memorable evening that I shared with my cousins.

We love this place. Always great food and service. Chadwick was on point. We had the new dish below and it was amazing. It’s the new Cod special. Ray makes the most excellent cocktails 🍸 The new fresh look inside is warm, refreshing and always intimate. Great job on the new lighting. I’ve almost set a couple menus on fire with the old candles trying to see the words without my glasses. 🤓 If you have never been, you don’t know what you’re missing. If you’re a regular like we are, you know exactly how we feel. Great job 👏🏼 to all who make this “meal” an experience of tasteful pleasure.

6.22.23 Great staff, Zara the Sloper is the best!!! The food is delicious, including the perogies, halibut, linguine, clams, etc and the desserts were so tasty. You should try the coconut ice cream treat. I was never a coconut fan, but that was over the top. The atmosphere is so cozy. Thank you all for a great evening 👍 🇺🇸

9/10 We will be back! Everything we ordered was great! The service was on point as well. We did the pork belly and shishito steak apps- both were amazing. The ravioli with truffle and arugula was delicious! If there was one thing we had to not order it would be the burger, but it’s only because the other stuff was better!! It’s a burger, the other options are the route.

It had been a while since I ate at the Red Onion and I don’t know why I didn’t return sooner. I took my mom to the super cozy restaurant, where I’ve always enjoyed the duck. The octopus, pierogis, and mussels also stood out in the past. The duck was excellent - and equally excellent was the service provided by Josiah. He was funny, warm, welcoming, and read my mind when it came to wine. I will definitely not wait as long next time.

My husband and I went here because it is our anniversary. Table looked elegant. I started out with cast iron skillet mussles - roasted with lemon and butter. They were very good. Very tender and about 3 dozen of them. My husband started with a white bean and bacon soup with parmesan cheese croutons and olive oil. The flavors blended beautifully. It tasted rich and creamy. My husband had the chopped salad. Romaine, feta, olives, cucumbers, red onions, tomatoes with a shallot sherry vinaigrette. There portion was huge and very tasty. For my main entree I had the seafood risotto large sea scallops, Mexican large white shrimp, calamari , mussles, white wine and herbs. These flavors are fantastic. All the seafood was cooked perfectly. My husband had the has lf pound fillet mignon. Madiera green peppercorn sauce, roasted potatoes, spinach, and mushrooms. It was medium rare all the way through the fillet. It melted in your mouth and the sauce was to die for. It was rich and delicious. We finished our meal with a slice of espresso cheese cake. Very nice espresso flavor. What I liked was that it was not overly sweet. The place was quite busy but they have a great staff that take very good care of every table. They pay attention to detail and make sure you always have specific silverware for different foods. It was a great anniversary. Price was reasonable for a elegant dinner.

We made a reservation for 6 people for a birthday dinner. We had the pierogi and buffalo mozzarella appetizers. For the mains we had the chicken, swordfish and the beet salad. Great place with exception food. Atmosphere is warm and inviting. Excellent bar. Not many places have lamb or liver on the menu anymore. We had them both, and both were excellent. The cured sardines, as an appetizer were also a.delicious surprise. Will return.

Tasty inventive food. My scallops with corn chowder was out of this world. The lamb chops were super yummy. The shrimp ceviche appetizer alternative hit all the right spots. The Manhattan and whiskey sour were perfect. Love half bottles of wine, which we had as well We were too full for desserts, but they looked fantastic. The only thing that was not perfect about the whole night was that the people who had the table before us overstayed their time way too long. Really dislike discourteous self indulgent diners! The host found us another table and comped our drinks and was so nice about the whole thing.

We had an outstanding experience at The Red Onion in the Woodstock area! The service was top-notch, and the food was absolutely delicious. I started with The Red Onion Caesar salad and had the Long Island duck breast as my entrée—both were perfection. My mom enjoyed the roasted beet and arugula salad and the Roasted Bell & Evans chicken breast with mashed potatoes and gravy, which she raved about. The margarita was very good, perfectly complementing our meal. For dessert, we had the Italian-style ricotta cheesecake, and it was also very good. Highly recommend!

Super delicious and amazing. We started off with raw oysters and beet citrus salad, followed by rack of lamb in a mint sauce and fillet mignon with potato gratin and spinach. Every dish had outstanding flavors that created perfect marriage of execution, detail and jaw dropping taste. We did not want to engage in any conversation except admiration of the quality of ingredients, style of the chef and out of the world experience. This place was established in 2002, 22years of fine world class food and dedication nestled in upstate NY. Grateful! Amazed! Can’t wait to come back! Magical! Thank you

It was my husband and my first time going to the Red Onion and we were not disappointed at all. I worked in the restaurant business for 35 years so I'm extremely critical about service and food. The service was impeccable, Matthew our waiter was excellent and very friendly and was always checking on us, and the food was amazing, seasoned perfectly. Highly recommend the Red Onion!!!!

They were friendly, personable, and accommodating staff. Great wait staff, they shared responsibilities - always had service, never had to wait for anything. This is my go-to restaurant in Woodstock. Our friend lives nearby and we often visit The Red Onion. The atmosphere is "country dining." The restaurant is located in a gracious old country house surrounded by the woods of a lovely country setting. The food is prepared beautifully but, more important, it's so delicious! The wait staff is professional, pleasant and friendly. From beginning to end, we enjoy our visits to The Red Onion. Highly recommended

It is one of the best restaurants in the area. We were at Mothers days brunch and had a dinner day before. Brunch menu was with alot of egg options. Loved the cocktails. Hashbrowns are fantastic. Egg Benedict and French toast is highly recommended. For dinner we had ravioli and trout (fresh catch from region) was very very good. Very friendly stuff. By the way excellent coffee. ❤️

Our recent dining experience at The Red Onion Restaurant & Bar was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted by a beautiful space exuding warmth and elegance. The attentive service throughout the evening added to the overall enjoyment. Starting off with cocktails, each sip was crafted to perfection. The Thai mussels were incredibly fresh and bursting with flavor. The scallops, cooked to a buttery perfection, paired wonderfully with the creamy risotto. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the steak, cooked medium rare and complemented by a rich, flavorful sauce. Every bite was a delight! Overall, The Red Onion exceeded my expectations in every aspect. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience in the Woodstock area.

Valentine's Day was our first time eating here. We were blown away. The upstairs dining room was the perfect atmosphere for the night. Service was stellar. The drink specials were awesome. We had the calamari to start and then the braised short ribs for me and the ravioli for my girlfriend. We capped it off with after dinner drinks and desserts. We had a great time and it was well worth the price! We will be back!

Went with a group and sat upstairs, the wait staff did a great job as we were kind of rowdy. Drinks were great as well as the service. As far as the food goes we ordered a lot of different apps and they all looked good. I personally didn’t try them. The menu does change a lot based on the season. I had the seafood risotto and it was good just lacking in the seafood amount for the price paid. Overall the ambiance was great as well.

Top 3 restaurant in Catskills. Upscale contemporary American cuisine, executed near perfectly with a great bar and cozy atmosphere. Been coming for years and always get the sardines. Edit: taking this down to 4 stars after what was terrible service and poor drinks on 10/21. Food still delicious though

Second restaurant in Saugerties that uses too much red pepper in the pastas. Otherwise good but you could tell the servers are new.

The Red Onion offers solid, upscale dining. We ate on their covered, screened porch, which was lovely. The food is tasty and the portions either adequate or on the large side. I had the red onion salad and halibut; both were good though a bit uninspired. Still, the experience overall was super, with great service. I think of Red Onion as a “safe” place to eat when I want an upscale night out. I will add that one dining companion, looking for vegetarian dishes, only found one option.

Overall a pretty good experience at The Red Onion. The food was well prepared and had good flavor. Bread could be better but was still good. The muscles as an appetizer were delicious and the bread was good for dipping in the remaining sauce. Plenty of parking. The table we were placed at was a bit small and became over crowded quickly. The creme brulee was delicious.

Although the accompanying vegetables were quite good, the duck confit itself was dried out and disappointing. I would not recommend this dish. Other members of our party were satisfied with their liver and curries. The mussels were very good.

We enjoyed the Red Onion. The Smoked Trout Mousse was good but missing something... But I very much enjoyed the Hoisin-Sesame Glazed Tofu. The broth was delicious. We enjoyed a nice half bottle of wine (pleased there was a brunello there!) and a gin martini (wish they had the blue cheese olives!). Can't recall our severs name but he was super nice and oddly enough we ran into him again at Pearl Moon!

Excellent food but VERY expensive. Not a good place for kids. No printed kids menu but they will offer buttered pasta, pasta with sauce and chicken fingers. As expensive as the food was they still had the nerve to charge for their "bread and butter table service". That was total BS.

My husband and I have been dining here for many years but unfortunately nothing stays the same. The rack of lamb was always great until they decided to bread them? Why. Only way you can get them. The portions have drastically changed. Mash potatoes not as good as they once were. We were seated upstairs for first time ever and did not enjoy that. Time to take a break from Red Onion. So disappointed. Are there new owners?

A Beautiful setting in an old House. Beautiful Atmosphere. A wide variety of choices on the Menu. Great Cocktails. We enjoyed the dinner. I recommend you try this place out. Service is good. You must try the Octopus! And the Calfs Liver is well prepared.

Had ordered to go. The seafood risotto was tasty however some of the mussel shells did not open so didn’t eat them. The Caesar salad portion was way too small. For $17 I expected more than a modest amount of Romaine with shaved cheese and dressing. Disappointed

Have been there many times, and the food is pretty good, generally speaking. However, they almost never change their menu, which is heavily meat based and hardy with staples like mashed potatoes. There a bit of a lack of fresh vegetables, especially in the summer, a lack of fresh salads and summer vegetables. The one salad, beet with arugula is often slightly soggy. Meat eaters however, really enjoy their meats and they’re well prepared. Also think, having a curry as the only vegetarian option (besides fish) is an odd choice. There’s also curry in the mussels, and almost all dishes have lots of garlic, which always makes me wary if chefs need to overuse that ingredient. Regarding the atmosphere, the table next to the kitchen, where they often place large groups needs to be eliminated. It’s totally cramped dining; kitchen staff is constantly walking by very closely in the busiest area of the restaurant. Further, there are two vents in the floor shooting up hot or cold air, depending on the season, right under peoples chairs. Unbearable if you sit on one of these vents and totally unacceptable-also for hygiene reasons- having that stuff blow up, onto your table and into your food.

We were very excited to have found this restaurant on our quick 2 day trip to the Catskills and ultimately were quite disappointed with it. Firstly, if your establishment accepts reservations it is in your interest to have made sure that when your guests arrive the table is ready. The host fumbled welcoming guests and it was evident he had to make sure things were ready at our to be table before we were seated. This is normally something I would completely overlook had I not had the following experience I had here. Moving on, we were seated with menus by the host and not greeted by our waiter for what seemed like a small eternity. A bread runner came but did not ask for a drink request or anything other than pouring some water, of which he almost took the remaing water back with him before ultimately deciding he should leave it on our table. After our waiter finally came and explained everything on the menu was indeed on the menu tonight…? (Run out of things often?) he took our drink order and again was in abscondence. Drinks came, and were decent. Once he finally returned to take our meal orders, I explained I was between two items on the appetizer menu and two items on the entree menu.. he feigned curiosity at my choices, and went on about how everything was so good but ultimately suggested the pierogies and the duck. Awesome! Sounds great. I’ll have the duck breast on the rare side please. EH! Wrong answer. We recommend medium rare. There was no asking if I wanted it any other way. Sure, fine. As my appetizer came the waft of truffle piqued my interest again to my ultimate let down. The pierogies were acceptable at best. I’ve had better pierogies at beer festivals. The truffle oil that perfumes the dish is the only thing that elevated the dish and certainly does not bring the plate to the price point they are charging. But that’s alright, I still have some delicious duck to look forward to! Yet once again was I to be let down. A mediocre duck breast, less than mediocre jus, and some lackluster collard greens. The potatoes too.. Potatoes are one of Gods gifts to humanity. They are almost impossible to not get right. All they need it a little butter and something the kitchen evidently doesn’t know exists.. SALT. Guys, if you aren’t going to put salt on your tables.. You better be getting the seasoning right in the kitchen. EVERYTHING was underseasoned. I understand nouvelle cuisine, and if that’s where you are going with this, properly seasoned food is a must to let the food speak for itself. Yet, something tells me the head chef probably doesn’t even know what I’m talking about. Our waiter shifted from pleasant to short and it became evident he himself was not up to the task of waiting tables with acceptable behavior. An affogato that’s not been properly thought out, which turned into a soupy mess, finished our night here, of which will be the last time we come to the more appropriately named “bruised onion”. Buyer Beware.

Everything was perfect, the food, the service, the ambiance, incredible. An almost perfect date night, until a group was sat right behind us with a dog in their party. The dog sat in its owners lap and was being fed food from the table. I love dogs but dogs DO NOT belong in restaurants. My partner is also allergic! This seriously threw a wrench in what was a lovely, almost perfect dinner. It was also in violation of certain NYS laws about pets in restaurants. Only service dogs allowed. This was definitely not a service dog. I was very disappointed that the staff allowed this in their dining room. Please do better.

My husband and I had dinner here for my birthday. The last time we ate out just the two of us (without our toddler) was almost 2 years ago for our anniversary, and it was also at Red Onion. Overall our experience 2 years ago was far superior. The food was good, the drinks were amazing, and the atmosphere was great. Unfortunately this time things fell flat. The food was ok - appetizers were good (scallops and anchovies) but mains not so much (and asparagus as a vegetable in January? Why? I almost didn't order the cod because I didn't want to be eating asparagus this time of the year), and dessert was really just so-so (tiramisu). Cocktails were ok. The menu could really use some revamping as the only vegetarian main on the menu was the same as it was 2 years ago. Service was weird - we waited a very long time for our server to show up, and then service was too fast. In fact I was about to eat a bite of food on my fork when a young man asked me if I was done and if he could clear my plate....I stared at him feeling confused and didn't know what to say. Awkward. I know restaurants have no control over how their patrons dress, but when you're putting some effort into looking nice and you're going to a nice restaurant, and then you see folks rolling in like they literally pulled their gross clothes and baseball caps out of their gym bag and put them on....well that definitely ruins the atmosphere. Last but not least, usually when you make a reservation at a restaurant and you indicate it's a special occasion, the dessert plate has something written on it, or you get a candle. Not this time, so that was also a bummer. I won't say we won't ever return here, but it will probably be a very long time before that happens.

Writing this in hopes that something will change. Four regulars- not drinking. First show of waitress disappointment. Guacamole got disappeared .TY out to Angelo for saving that error. $25 burger looked quite lonely delivered on large plate all assembled though vegetable was ordered as a side. Maitre de quick to deny it’s ever served differently. Coffee tepid- he actually microwaved it ( I did ask that it be microwaved ), but never thought that he would actually do it!!! Why not a fresh cup? In general though, the food was good with nice presentation, but at these prices you should be getting the best of everything.

We’ve been to The Red Onion many times over the years and have always really enjoyed it, so last night’s dinner was especially disappointing. The service was confusing and inconsistent; over the course of two hours we had about five different servers. We were never asked if we wanted a second drink which made the whole experience feel disorganized. The food, which is usually a highlight, also missed the mark this time: The mussels were surprisingly bland / The shrimp appetizer tasted great but the portion was only three very small shrimp / The rigatoni was overcooked and lacked flavor entirely. Food timing was also off — everything came out all at once, and then we waited long stretches with no follow-up. We’ve genuinely loved this restaurant in the past, but last night just didn’t live up to its usual standard. Hoping it was an off night, because we’d love to have the experience we’ve come to expect here.

This restaurant is totally OVERPRICED. ! I had the Giant Scallops, they were the size of quarters.. That is not giant. The risotto was flat & tasteless, and the weird mushrooms taste very strange. Everything is ala Carte and expensive. This is NOT New York City. My friend enjoyed the steak and my other friend did like her oysters. The deserts are great but super pricy. The service is superb The atmosphere is plain and who wants to eat in a bar ? As a local, I will NOT be recommending this place to my Airbnb guests.

We have been dining at The Red Onion since it opened around 2002. Until now, I've always appreciated the great service and delicious food. My friends and I had a 5:30 reservation at a very busy, upscale restaurant. The service during dinner was outstanding and our food was very good. We ordered after dinner drinks which took a little while to get. The hostess placed the bill on the table while we were still enjoying them. She stopped twice and we told her we were not finished quite yet. The third time she came over and said "we need this table"!!! At no time during the reservation process or upon arrival were we told our time at the table would be limited. Being rushed out after a full dinner, drinks, a tab around $300, and as long time, loyal customers was humiliating and embarrassing for us and even for our great server. It is unacceptable to treat guests this way. The hostess apologized when she saw that we were upset. It was not sincere. Although it won't matter whatsoever, I will never return. I have dined all over the world and have never been asked to leave a restaurant. A fine dining experience should never end with guests feeling pushed out the door.

The restaurant was not up to the standards we have come to expect. Our friend asked to send back the duck because it was tasteless. The hostess accepted the return but was argumentative and condescending; the waitress was polite and professional. The Cavatalli dishes that my wife and I ordered were poor but we didn't send them back. They had what I can describe as a crust, as if they were sitting under heating lamps too long, making the pasta tough. Our friend's husband enjoyed the liver. I was ill the next morning, not to make a direct connection to the food, but I can't think of any other possible causes of GI discomfort since I ate lightly during the day.

We wanted to reserve a table on Tuesday evening and were told there was only availability at 5 pm or 8:45. We rushed to dine at 5 pm and found the place empty till 6:30.

Absolutely appalling experience at Red Onion—longtime customers BEWARE. After dining here nearly 50 times over four years, we were shocked by the treatment we received. On a recent visit, despite several empty tables, we were refused a table and told only bar seating was available. We didn’t complain, but later mentioned to the hostess that it would have been nice to be offered a table since they remained empty. My fiancé left a negative review about the lack of hospitality. A month later, we returned—only to be told, after finishing our meal, that my fiancé is now BANNED from the restaurant for “yelling” at staff. This is completely false; no one raised their voice, and the only “offense” was leaving an honest review. The manager made it clear: if you dare to leave negative feedback, you risk being banned. If you value customer service, transparency, or your right to honest feedback, think twice before coming here. We will never return, and urge others to be cautious—this restaurant punishes customers for speaking up.
