Been here twice now. Had the Reuben the first time and a Triple Decker BLT with potato salad the second. Bother were excellent.
Went there for breakfast this morning and while we did have to wait a bit for our food (despite it being an empty restaurant) it was delicious! We got the challah bread French toast and “The Gershon” breakfast sandwich. Highly recommend both! Left with one of their overstuffed sandwiches and can’t wait to enjoy that for lunch!
Great place, polite people, good food.
Delicious whitefish salad. Bagels are quite small compared to other places, esp bagels in the city. Great selection of deli foods to dine-in or take home.
Nice little deli. Relaxed with excellent food.
Excellent sandwiches and soups. In house corned beef and brisket is fantastic, and they make the best Reuben in town (try it with Jarlsberg instead of Swiss!). Save room for some cheesecake, too! Only problem is parking (park on Union a block before for best results). Quick note: they now close at 3 weekdays.
First went to Gershon's Deli more than 30 years ago. Loved it then, love it now. Only reason I haven't been there is that I moved too far away to go. Just happened to be in the area & was curious if they were still in business. So glad to see that they were. Clean, friendly & delicious as always! Great place for a real deli lunch experience, others pale in comparison. Favorite deli of all time. Go check it out.
Stopped by here for the first time during the Strawberry Festival over the weekend. I got a chicken cutlet sandwich with cheddar, bacon, and ranch. The sandwich was phenomenal and the wait was excellent taking into consideration how many people were there. I will definitely be returning to try more of what they have to offer, I was very pleased with my experience.
Great traditional kosher-style deli. Both the corned beef and the pastrami are excellent. I will certainly be returning and would recommend it to others. I would drive up to 12 miles out of the way to get a delicious sandwich. Parking not great - but you worth a street spot.
Ordered delivery; catering lunch sandwiches for a business meeting. Everything was a huge hit. The order was delivered right on time. Everyone I talked to on the phone, plus the delivery driver, was very friendly.
The best deli. So lucky to have them only a few blocks away. My favorites are turkey club and matzah ball soup. Very nice owner, her father was great too.
Gershons is delicious! An authentic Italian deli with everything from salad, to pasta, to sandwiches and sweets. Great wide selection of meats and everything is made fresh and ready to order. Love this place. Make sure you leave plenty of time to order during lunch time though because they do get really busy in the middle of the day. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a great deli.
Delicious old-school NY deli. Wonderful Reuben's, both corned beef and pastrami. Killer pickles and a full spread of other meals with both sit down service and a deli counter.
Amazing!! The sandwich was huge, the service was quick and was the best pastrami that I've ever had. I ate my sandwich on way home and wanted to drive back and get another one.
Everyone who works here is SO sweet. Seriously, I've been in here on a weekday, weekend, morning, afternoon, doesn't matter, they're always super kind and friendly. The food is generously portioned and real cheap. I'm honestly surprised not to see more college kids in there when I go. This place is the best!
A forever favorite of mine. The combination corned beef and pastrami on rye is the perfect sandwich. Love the macaroni salad here as well.
Best local deli around! If you're looking for fresh salads, meats and pickles! Their pickles and pineapple coleslaw are to die for! If your visiting on a nice day, you should definitely eat outside and try one of their chicken salad sandwich combos. So yummy and a great value!
I've gotten gershons tons of times. Their combination #1 sandwich is my favorite. Be warned: the regular sliced bread is thin, so eating these sandwiches in a car or while wearing nice clothes is a higher risk. Some people might find that less than desirable. I wish the bread was somewhat more sturdy but the quality of meat is amazing.
Did catering for hannukah...I ordered days in advance but had to wait 15min since it looked like they misplaced the order. The latkes were well received, and Roasted red peppers were as expected. The bagel chips got mixed reviews as to their crispiness
This is the BEST! I have never had anything that I didn't like. My favorite is the chicken salad sandwich in toasted marble bread and the garden cole slaw. You must visit this old school deli! You'll want to come back!
Gershon's is an old standby. The sandwich I ordered was packed with pink, thinly sliced roast beef; just the way I like it. Their standard for well portioned servings and friendly; quick service hasn't diminished over the some 25 years I've been enjoying lunch there. The seating area was abuzz with happy patrons. At Gershon's, you always leave satisfied.
Wow, visiting the world famous Gershon's today was an unforgettable experience! Toni and Gina were absolutely phenomenal; their energy was contagious, making every moment delightful. They went above and beyond to ensure that my needs were met, providing little touches of excellence throughout my visit. It felt like being welcomed by old friends rather than just receiving service! When you combine such friendly faces with top-notch quality—it creates magic! I'm eagerly counting down the days until I return for another round of extraordinary service!
You get what you pay for. I had a great tasting/quality whitefish salad sandwich and my friend had a hearty french dip half. Each came with the most delicious half sour pickle. Both were super yummy.
We've been here multiple times. Food is always on point. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. This trip my husband got the corned beef reuben, and I got the roast beef sandwich. We also got a side of tuna mac salad, which is our favorite.
My boyfriend was visiting Upstate last week so I took him here in Gershon’s for breakfast. I had Pastrami on Rye and he had a burger, medium well. He was amazed with the quality and the flavor of the burger. The I had pastrami is indeed fresh and tasty, not unlike the ones you buy in fast food chains or in the grocery store. They were very generous with the portions too. I would recommend every deli lovers to come and try Schenectady’s gem: Gershon’s!
My favorite place to go when we are in Schenectady! The food never fails to be perfect and staff is always very friendly. On the menu the prices look a little high but when you get your sandwich it is justified! We were lucky enough to get there on a beautiful, sunny day and ate outside!
This is the absolute best deli food in the entire area. Quality and quantity of food when pre-ordering for events has always been amazing. Customer service is excellent. Toni makes sure you are completely satisfied. Never eaten anything we didn’t love. Recommend them for catering any size event, small to large groups.
Schenectady has experienced many changes over the decades. One glorious establishment stands out as one which has not suffered these changes. Gershons. I began my love affair back in the 70s when there were only two Jewish deli restaurants. I reunited with the restaurant recently when I discovered it was still there in the same place. I began with my favorite Reuben sandwich. A perfectly put together Reuben as it should be with exactly the right ingredients. The corned beef was so lean and tasty. I was shocked to discover the same pasta salads I enjoyed for years ! Everything at Gershons is fresh, fresh, fresh right down to the breads and rolls. The love that communities have for this iconic place, along with the allegiance of dedicated customers has cemented its reputation for the finest food. I’m so thankful and thrilled to be back! Oh…. I chose shrimp and shells salad. It is exactly as I remembered!!! ❤️
I love this place. Came here as a child and now as an adult moving away for 20 years. The matza ball soup and French dip are my favorites with a dr brown black cherry soda. So delicious.
This is a DELI! Giant pastrami sandwich. The meat melts in your mouth and there is a lot of it. On marble bread with a little mustard! Yum!
Awesome deli! The wait staff are super kind and helpful! We went as a group and had the Reuben and a few different triple deckers make sure to order something with pastrami! If you’re super hungry get the triple decker A and if you want something warm get the Reuben. Also the pickles are to die for
This place, this place, this place. Wow. One of my absolute favorite places to eat in the area. My wife and I have been there or ordered delivery from there too many times to count. Each and every time I am already looking forward to next time. My wife loves the chopped chicken liver sandwich. Me, I love the roast beef on rye with mayo with the pickle that comes with it and a can of Sr. Brown’s soda. Those are our favorites but everything else we’ve had has been great as well. It’s the closest thing to a NYC deli up here and I am glad we have it.
While visiting friends in schenectady on friday, we stopped by Gershons Delifor lunch and I was really impressed. The corned beef sandwich was delicious—tender, flavorful, and satisfying. Service was friendly and quick, making for a great overall experience. Highly recommend if you're in the area!
Fabulous made to order affordable breakfast w kosher options. Super staff and classic candies and area baked breads. GF bread/toast a nice addition. Deli counter also. Small quaint historical and worth trip eat in or take out.☕👋
Food is always good here. Servers are very attentive. Very few real delis left anymore 😕
The reuben sandwich is the best. And don't forget the pickles 😋 to die for. Our waitress was very friendly. (Just wish I could remember her name)
Very good salads. Especially go for tuna and rings salad. Very hard to find. Wish there was just a little less mayonnaise. Soups are good if kind I like. Have not had a sandwich but I am sure very good and need to get one soon.
Did take out. Food is good. Large sandwiches. Side salads are great. Veggie Slaw rules.
Gershon's closes at three o'clock and I got there about 10 of. The staff were charming and so helpful. Their food was also excellent!
This is the best deli anywhere in the area. Period. It’s a bit like walking back in time, in a very good way. They have been there since 1956 and there is a very good reason they are still there. The food is amazing. The meats are the best there is. Breakfast selections are excellent. There is a huge selection of sandwiches and really, really good sides and grilled items. It’s the kind of place you always want to go back to just to try something else on the menu. The best there is…❤️❤️
Great food, fast service. Definitely will visit again.
This is a great deli! Best sandwiches around, hands down. You can’t go wrong with any of their offerings but I love their chicken cutlet, turkey, and reuben sandwiches. All sandwiches come with a whole pickle which is an added bonus. They also offer delicious homemade soups, deli sides, and baked goods. We especially love ordering from here when we have family in town because they are always impressed. If you haven’t tried them yet, don’t give it a second thought. There is something for everyone.
The best sandwitch ever! Old school, fresh, loaded with real roasted turkey! Delicous potato salad, easy online ordering and friendly service! Fantastic is putting it mildly!
Food tasted much better when it was Kosher. Parking is difficult at best. It has been almost 15 years since I have been there. However, when it comes to delicatessen, this place is one of a dying breed. Still, their prices are excellent and their portions are more than ample. If you are looking for a no-nonsense experience that provides a no frills experience, this is your place. Be careful, their hours are 7am to 3pm.
Incredible experience, waitress was delightful, I had the Rueben, which was spectacular. The other 5 guys with me also said their food was delicious A++++ We will be back soon!!!
Originally from Long Island, grew up on bagels from Long Island and Manhattan. would go here every Sat,sun to order an everything toasted bagel with cream cheese, lox, onion, and capers.loved this place and now have to find another place. i’m very sorry for the owner that she has to close sad 😢
Sorry to hear that you closed. May God bless you for hanging in there though the years . I loved your food. And yes the best sandwiches around and great salads and soup. Thank you
Best Reuben anywhere! You will.be in business forever because you are the best at what you do locally!
We had a waitress who checked on us multiple times even though she had plenty of other tables to see! Our in door to getting food time was less than 15 minutes!
Sooo delicious and the best staff ever. When bees got on my food while I was eating outside they came and scared the bees away and moved my food inside so I could eat comfortably. A classic deli location with plenty of options.
Another one! I’m a foodie, and anytime I travel I like to find the best food spots. Gershons Deli is definitely being added to the favorites list. Tried the chicken cutlet sandwich and mac salad with tuna, amazing and authentic. Service was excellent food was even better, cant wait to cone back
We had a delightful experience at this deli! Gina was exceptionally warm and welcoming, making the visit even more enjoyable. The highlight, though, was the pastrami sandwich—perfectly seasoned and incredibly tender. It’s a must-try for anyone in the area. A lovely spot for a quick, delicious bite!
One of the best sandwiches I have ever had. The overstuffed pastrami and corned beef with oil and vinegar coleslaw and Russian dressing 🤤. The prices are expensive for sandwiches but it’s worth it. I ate the other half and then I remembered I have to do a review so sorry about that 😜! I almost forgot their oil and vinegar coleslaw is the best I always get a side dish of that 😋.
My Uncle’s favorite sandwich is made here, the portobello mushroom. My tuna melt on rye was delicious! Be sure to ask for their yummy deli pickles and a side of German potato salad! The service is efficient and the dining area now has more space. Outside dining is also available. You can usually find free street parking nearby. It’s easy to call ahead and pick up takeout.
Absolutely love coming to Gershon's. Have been coming here for over 20 years and I'm never disappointed. Absolutely one if the best reubens I've had and their matzoh ball soup is delicious. Always great prices and the people are always friendly. Definitely a place people need to check out when visiting Schenectady
Great. The food is awesome, with some interesting things like the brisket platter with potatoe pancakes which were wonderful. I was a little disappointed to no have any napkin or silverware with the take out order. I found the new pickles too salty. Everything else was 5 star.
Got a pastrami and tongue sandwich combo, and pesto pasta salad. The textures and flavors were great, and having not ordered from here in 15 years it is still as good as I remember. Best NY style, Italian leaning deli in upstate NY I've had besides the Brooklyn pickle in Syracuse.
It's hit and miss and some of the foods can be bland. The chicken cutlet is wonderful as well as many of the sandwich specials and soups. The side salads are good but under seasoned for my taste.
It is one of Schenectadys best !! The deli has a big city feel. With the meats and specials on display, so you can see what you order. Seating is limited, i would call ahead for groups bigger than 4, and check availability. I usually just park nearby, walk in and order a sandwich. They have a good variety, they quickly take the order, and prepare it, in an acceptable amoumt of time. Check them out, and tasr
A friend took me here for lunch today. It was a treat for me since there aren't really delis near me. My friend ordered the corned beef, pastrami, and something else with coleslaw on top. Her sandwich was huge! I ordered the special, which was a cheese and tomato panini. I ordered potato salad and unsweetened ice tea to go with it. I could eat only half of my sandwich and potato salad. The salad was really creamy which I appreciated because some places serve potato and mac salads way too dry. The only downside was that there was some sort of mix up between the wait staff and the kitchen about my order (even though it was the special) and we waited quite awhile, being served after people who arrived after us. I would totally recommend though for the food--good size serving and good flavor.
Gershon’s never disappoints on sandwiches and salads — best in the 518. The staff is friendly and funny. There is no better pastrami and corned beef to be had locally.
I never ate in there so i cant rate the atmosphere. I ordered a tray of Eggplant Parmesean it was delicious several thinly sliced layers of all their ingredients, Very Good. Some people who ate it thought it was Chicken Parmesean for some reason, possibly because it looked very similar. The lady at the counter was Exceptionally Friendly & Helpful along with a Customer, assisting me by carrying it ti my car & holding doors open. Felt Very Nice in a customer standpoint that they went out of their way to please a customer.
Excellent soup. Stopped in for late morning pick me up and wasn't disappointed with their delicious minestrone and some rye with sweet butter Meticulously clean and efficient service
They have the best white fish, both salad and chunks. So good I make a special trip when I run out. Their rice pudding is also a treat. Years ago someone local provided chocolate cream pies... I wish she would do that again. We really miss them. And lastly their chicken noodle soup is great.
great place for any meal! Deli sandwiches are always great, especially their roast turkey! Sides are typical of an old school Jewish deli. Be prepared to wait even taking out. It's always packed because it's always great! Parking is not great but understandable of a city establishment.
Gershon's Deli is a neighborhood mainstay for good reason. Living within walking distance means it's a frequent order for us. Their breakfast sandwiches are a steal – under $6 for a bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel, with your choice of fried, scrambled, or egg white. They don't skimp on the meat and cheese, making it the perfect satisfying start. For a more substantial bite, the bagel and lox sandwich is packed with ingredients and well worth the $10. But the real star of the show is their Reuben. Seriously, it's phenomenal. We've had a couple of misses, though. The potato pancakes were dense, flavorless, and cold. A chicken cutlet sandwich once had a thin, dry piece of chicken. It was hard to bite into and really hard to chew. Overall, Gershon's gets the important things right. The breakfast sandwiches are a fantastic deal, the lox bagel is generous, and that Reuben? It's a must-try. Being able to walk over makes it an even better local spot for us.
I ordered online. I asked for mayo on my sandwich, but they put thousand island on it which I did not care for. It was a mistake, but I will still try them again.
Great NY City style deli . Be sure to get the large corn beef sandwich.
Had lunch, 4/8/25. Food was excellent. Staff was busy, but very good. Since this was my first time here, and after hearing great things about the place, my expectations were high. Walking into the place, i was surprised at the inside and total atmosphere. Not what i thougt it was going to be. Very crowded and just did not impress. Paying the bill was interesting. People all over the place, walking in front of you, etc...I will eat from here again, however, but it will be take out. Compliments to the staff, the chef. Thumbs down to atmosphere. Still gave it 4 stars overall.
We stopped in for lunch while in the area. There are several tables inside and people come in and sit with others due to the way the tables are arranged (which is fine). We both had a half chicken cutlet sandwich cordon bleu. The sandwich was very large—needing to cut with a fork and knife. The chicken cutlet seemed very overdone; I know they have them premade ready for heating, but this was rubbery. The flavor was also just OK. I was really wanting a warm sandwich and the chicken cutlet seemed to be the only options that were warm. The deli sandwiches that arrived at other tables looked very substantial. I would consider returning to try something else, but wouldn’t get the chicken cutlet sandwich again.
Real find true ny style deli. No fake turkey here. Real pastrami, corned beef and brisket. Unfortunately limited hour, no dinner available. But great if you can do lunch or breakfast.
The soup was delicious. It would have been even better hot. Unfortunately it was just mildly warm. The sandwiches are the real highlight. Service was very friendly and super quick. I will come back.
This is an authentic New York City style deli, but it is not as good as those near the city. They give the young pickle, which is very New York. We were pleasantly surprised. They have an outside eating area. My family members loved their sandwiches. They had pastrami and brisket. I think l ordered poorly. I got bologna on white sliced bread. I got such an enormous amount of meat that my bread went dwarfed and doughy. We went out of our way to go back again on a road trip. My family members were happy with their sandwiches, and ordered the same as before. Me, l ordered wrongly again. I got a barbecue chicken sandwich. This was a homestyle prepared chicken breast on a Kaiser type roll. The meat was fresh and plentuful. The roll was good. The sandwich was plain though. I had to go in and ask for condiments. This was really a grilled chicken sandwich, not barbecue. It is a cute old style deli that is popular here. The staff are efficient, but not that friendly. They close at 3:00pm, and the lady was taking umbrellas down at 2:30pm. We were able to sit at a table under an awning, but this made us feel unwelcome. We had to hurry to eat and use the bathroom. They have a nice indoor seating area. The bathroom is in the back through the kitchen. They should have another bathroom in back for customers. I think the staff don't like customers in their kitchen area. You could trip over a mop and end up in a bucket of soapy water. To bad we don't have a place like this near our home. My advice us order the pastrami or brisket. The sandwiches and drinks were pricey. 47$ for three sandwiches, drinks and bag of chips.
Food took forever to come (almost an hour). Others who ordered after us got their food before us. Also, my daughter's order was messed up... came with a lot of Italian dressing, instead of ON Italian bread. That said, they were excellent about handling an order for my son who has Celiac. They were honest about food items that may be cross contaminated, they did have gluten free bread, and they saran wrapped his sandwich to keep it safe. Everything else was excellent as usual. Love the fresh roasted turkey and rye bread...and garden coleslaw!!!
Potato pancake was undercooked. The potato strands in the middle of the pancake were hard. They don't make their own pastrami. Pastrami was thinly sliced on a slicer. Meat was rubbery. It sure ain't Katz! Staff was nice. Restaurant was clean.
Haven't been here in years. Definitely changed. Sandwich is mediocre to poor. Sandwich was small, very little meat, put together like a 7yearold child would do. No chips or anything else. Very overrated. Would not come back.
Went back here today... order was made backwards, missing what was requested, it wasn't busy, so what's changed? Had to break down both sandwiches to create the actual sandwiches asked for. Not what we expected for $14 sandwiches. Night and day from last time we visited. See sandwich pic.
I had a hot pastrami on rye with mustard on it. Also a pickle. The sandwich was pretty good mainly because the pastrami is moist and tasty. Nearly $17 after tax 😬. No it's not huge. Just a normal sized sandwich. Two slices of b+ rye bread and good pastrami isn't worth $17. The amount of meat I got was way less than the pictures posted in positive reviews. besides needing to be wealthy to eat here, the parking situation is ridiculous and the pickle was the worst I've ever had in my life. I took two bites and threw it into the trash. Honestly it was disgusting. Idk how you mess up pickles but they did. why does it have to be so expensive? I drove out of my way to eat here. the extra gas I used to drive out here and back home, the high price for just a regular sized sandwich with a bad pickle, the insane parking scenario, and knowing how I could get a full sized sub from a nearby deli with a good pickle and normal parking and a bag of chips for less money...I'm never coming back it's not worth it imo. I'm saying this despite that pastrami being by far the best I've had ever in the albany area. It's just so expensive it doesn't matter how good it is. If you had a really good pizza somewhere but it cost you $40 would you ever go back? No unless you just inherited a million dollars or won the lotto because you know you're being ripped off and it's way to expensive for such a small amount of food
I was confused about this place after having asked around about a Jewish deli and kosher places. This place is definitely not kosher, at all. Anyways, to eat-in you have to just go to the seating area and a waitress will take your order, that is not clear but ok, I know now. The menu board is confusing and not conducive to first timers at the counter ordering to-go. Staff is chaotic but well-intentioned and friendly. Could use some kind of protocol or training on efficiency. Food was ok, not great, not a fan of pickles that might as well be cucumbers (and are tiny). Ratio of meat to mayo to bread way off. I get wanting to be generous, especially given how expensive they are, but it doesn't taste right.
We found Gershon’s to be fairly disappointing. My boyfriend and I got two pastrami breakfast sandwiches and a chicken cutlet sandwich from Gershon’s. While the breakfast sandwiches were delicious, the chicken tasted fishy and it was gross. Not to mention the poor service from the staff. The woman taking our order seemingly could not retain my order whatsoever and I had to repeat myself several times, nor was she particularly friendly. None of the staff were friendly or welcoming in any way. Three sandwiches took 25 minutes to make and cost $25. We most likely won’t be back.
Ordered 2 sandwiches. The bread was hard & stale on both the onion roll and the Italian. I have been wanting to try this place for a while, but I’m disappointed that I spent $29 after tip for mediocre sandwiches. Had to toss them after a couple bites. I think I would be willing to try them one more time in case this was a one off. The lady who delivered the food to the car was very nice though!
Great food! The dining experience is less then desirable, honestly horrible. They try to force you to sit with other customers at one table like a cafeteria. Because they are unprepared! It ruined my whole meal. I don’t want to sit with strangers while I’m taking out my girlfriend. Do better The waiting staff has an unpleasant attitude. Unacceptable
I put in 6 different orders 1 day ahead with a pick up time at 12. The person on the phone said no problem. Got there 5 minutes to 12 and was told I was too early, food was to be done at 12:30. They told me they hadn’t started my order yet. So, I patiently waited. 15 minutes later the food was ready. 6 orders to be made in 15 minutes is crazy. Come to find out the 4 beef burgers ordered were half cooked. Never spending money there again. Might as well go to 5 guys because they have flavorless burgers there as well, at least it would be cooked properly.
I used to always get my corned beef sandwiches here but that was a couple of years. I now live a distance away from there but I thought I'd drive by and bring a couple sandwiches home for my wife and myself so I ordered two plain corned beef sandwiches on a hard roll when I got home I tasted the sandwich and although I ate it was absolutely no flavor to the corned beef at all and I thought it was me but I asked her and she said yeah this is not really good. The meat was cut paper thin and there was no visible fat(flavor) on it at all. Seemed to be less meat than in previous years. Potato salad was very good as always. Paid $32 for 2 sandwiches and 1/4 lb. Of potato salad. Don't mind paying a lot if the food is good. But this was tasteless. Lesson learned.
I’ve been going to that deli for 20 years. I go there this morning no good morning nothing what do you need ham egg and cheese on everything bagel I get one egg on a bagel that was microwaved. The cheese wasn’t even melted. It was cold. I don’t care if it cost $20 which you didn’t horrible.
We have been going to Gershon's for a dozen years. Parking is always a challenge. On this particular day 11/18/24, we entered and was told by man at register to "take a seat wherever empty". We saw two tables, so we chose one and sat next to each other (as my companion is very hard of hearing and I didn't want to be loud, sitting across the table, talking. Immediately, waitress came and said, "if some others come in, you'll have to move and sit across from each other". I told her, we'd be happy to share our table with anyone, however, I wasn't going to move. Another woman came over and wanted to know why we were sitting next to each other, rather than across. Their glare and attitude was very disturbing. Then they were whispering to each other. So uncomfortable, we lost our appetite (based on the goid quality and prices), ot was a very easy decision to leave, and we agreed to never return.
They don’t do breakfast after 10:30. This is a deli you can’t make a simple sausage, egg, and cheesewhy not? Oh well, they saved me a couple bucks. They’re overpriced anyway.
