Opinions de Canoe House South Pasadena
Oh my gosh!!! This was the best Hawaiian food that I've ever had this side of Maui. The pulled pork sliders are amazing the house made barbeque sauce is the best. The Hawaiian burger is yummy and pair it with garlic fries and you won't be sorry. The fish tacos are literally the best you'll ever find outside of a Mexican restaurant and better than all Mexican restaurant but maybe one or two. They are that good. You've got to get the Mai Tai if you're old enough. It tastes great and shoots well. Love the aloha vibe and the service was great!
Cute Hawaiian themed restaurant with friendly attentive staff wearing Hawaiian shirts. Food was delicious, well portioned & reasonably priced! Definitely recommend this place!
The Short Rib Loco Moco is amazing!
A gem in south Pasadena. The food and service was pleasant. The TV’s are a plus and they accommodate to your request if you want to catch a game. There’s plenty of choices in the menu. I can’t wait to go back and try some of their other options. Great place for families.
My first time there and everything was delicious. The waitress Jayelle was very patient as my friend's son and 100 year old Dad showed up and joined us when we were almost finished eating. Apparently this is one of their favorite places to eat. Although we ate in the patio, I went inside to use the restroom and love the neat interior decorations. Will definitely go again.
Had a fantastic experience at the canoe house today. Our server Tiffany was very friendly and conscientious. The food was delicious, well prepared, and reasonably priced. I will definitely go back.
Going in on a Tuesday night for dinner. I arrived with some family members to celebrate my mother's birthday. The staff was professional and courteous. The food was excellent, and they even had a pineapple upside down cake for dessert. All in all I had a wonderful time at the Canoe House.
Great atmosphere and even better food. Service was prompt and friendly. The whole place just felt very relaxed on a Sunday afternoon.
We had a small group in the separate meeting room. Our server took care of our group very well.
I love Canoe House. Such a great place to take my baby. The food is good and pretty well priced, good drinks, and it comes out fast. Don’t miss the pineapple upside down cake.
The food is really tasty. I have a son that gates all veggies and actually ate the brussel sprouts. My older son loves the wings. I enjoyed my salad. We went back for breakfast and evening was just lovely.
Came here for breakfast a while back and got the Moco Loco and Fried Rice entrees - savory, filling, and delicious. Our server was courteous and patient with us.
I just moved to South Pasadena and have been here about 4 times since. I love it for being a community restaurant with a good beer selection and bar. The staff is great too. I also like the Hawaiian themed decor and some of the food items, but I do feel like that the food can be a little hit or miss. Whatever the case, I will be back!
I've driven by this place so many times, and never paid it much attention. Was driving by again recently while hungry and decided to give them a chance. It's a quaint little place, ample parking, decorated with an island theme, very clean. Service was very good, the Mexican Mule was excellent, with just the right amount of ginger, and the food extremely tasty and good value. Highly recommended
I went to their happy hour on a Monday and will continue going back. We ordered some drinks and small bites, but what really stood out to me was their delicious house Sangria and crisp brussel sprouts. Their service was also great- our waitress was very attentive and always made sure we got what we needed. Thank you!
Food is always solid, fried chicken sandwich is awesome! Drinks are great, could use a better draft selection but it's a tiny bar. Wait staff is always on point.
Good food, and the prices are reasonable. They also have nice new restrooms, with paper towels, not those silly blowers. I had a salmon burger which was excellent, and my wife had the chicken sandwich, which was abreast, and fried, but not oily. Our business associates had the chicken and the pot roast, both good. We have been going to this restaurant for something like 20 years, and it is now better than ever.
I've driven by this restaurant numerous times, but this is the first time trying it out. Our table had the teriyaki wings, fish slider's, Big Kahuna burger and to top it off, the pineapple upside down cake. Every dish was outstanding. Also, our waiter Wesley provided excellent service. This may have been the first visit, but it definitely won't be the last.
Fun restaurant with a Hawaiian theme and a great Tiki Bloody Mary
What A Pleasant Surprise! My son took me to Canoe House after we visited the floats. Absolutely loved it! Sweet Atmosphere and the food was fresh and delicious. It was cool to finally eat something different! Our waiter was very attentive. We wanted for nothing!
The food was absolutely delicious and very fresh tasting. I had the avocado toast with egg. I do wish it was bigger, but it was still very good. The bottomless mimosas are great and very decently priced. We had a great time and the bartender was fantastic!
It was our first time to eat there. After ordering our food, it was served within 15 minutes. The food was delicious. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with French fries. My daughter ordered the short ribs locomoco. Both were delicious. My grand daughter ordered Mac n cheese, a lava cake with ice cream. Prices are worth and reasonable with the taste and the amount of serving.
Awesome food! Hawaii is one of my favorite places to visit, I am always craving loco moco and this really hit the spot!
When I miss being in Hawaii, this is my go to place. From the outside I never would have thought this was a Hawaiian restaurant. I'm here quite often for the Hawaiian fried rice with Portuguese sausage and fried egg. My loves the fish tacos here too. Service is great and the bar service is excellent. We come here for Mai Thais and Pina Colada.
Hawaiian-inspired menu in a casual setting. One of the best values during the annual DineLA event.
Great! Matt was such a great waiter. Omelets are so good!
The food here is great. Never too crowded when we go for lunch. I get the nachos with chicken. Usually great service
The food is amazing and there is a wonderful patio area that is dog friendly.
Discovered this place by chance trying to go to the Fair Oaks Pharmacy this past Saturday. When those goobers closed an hour early we decided to go here and it was wonderful. All the food is incredibly well made and the service was wonderful. Music was really good too.
Love this place. Matt is the best. He will take care of you (and your bottomless mimosa!) during your weekend brunch. Great food, great service, great people.
First time visit. Went for lunch on a Tuesday for Taco Tuesday. 2 parking lots. Really friendly staff who mentioned it's 15% off on Fridays if you wear a Hawaiian shirt. Sat outside in the covered patio (they have a fire pit they light at night). Soft shell tacos were delicious with some unique ingredients. The parm garlic fries were hot and delicious. The menu is eclectic so there are plenty of options.
I don’t even know where to start—this was my very first time in California, and my great aunt recommended this restaurant as a must-visit for dinner. Boy, did she get it right! The food was absolutely delectable!!!! 🤤 On top of that, our waitress Stephanie made the entire experience even better. Her positive, upbeat attitude turned our dinner into a truly memorable occasion that we will never forget! And please, I beg you to try the ‘Bahama Mama.’ If you’re into fruity drinks like I am, Stephanie is your girl—she makes one of the best I’ve ever had! Thank you Canoe House for everything!!!!🩷
First time at Canoe House through DineLA. We got the fish and chips and the loco moco as well as the brussel chips appetizer and tuna over rice. There was also cobbler and an upside down pineapple cake for desser. It was all very good and hearty. The service was prompt and the food was delicious.
I came here a couple of years ago and never reviewed this location. The staffs are fast and helpful. They take care of customers very well. The food tastes great. The Hawaiian Fried Rice portion is really huge, enough for 2 people. Parking is easy on the streets, front and back of the resto. It has outdoor seating with has shade and is cornered from wind.
Yes this place does a good job for Hawaiian food and vibe. They have all the classic Hawaiian Foods, and a good bar. The night I was there they had hula dancers which were really cool. The food I had was kind of on the sweet side but it was still very tasty. I would go there again.
I really enjoyed the pull pork sandwich, fries were amazing. We had a very large group so a whole room was reserved for us. The food took a bit longer than usual, but it was understandable since the number (21) of people. We'll be back again.😀
Very good food. Rather limited menu but well prepared. Service has been very good the times I have been here. I have become a regular visitor. The pineapple upside down cake is excellent.
My wife and I came here for Dine LA and it was an overall good experience. Parking is a bit confusing as they have two lots but not very difficult to get a spot. The food was good, not great but for the price we were very happy. I got a burger and my wife got a salad, both of which were above average in flavor. The service was also quite good. They were responsive without hovering over you. The best compliment we can give is that we would actually come back.
I've walked past this restaurant several times and always ignored it. It reminded me of The Island chain which I'm not fond of. But Dine in LA gave me an excuse to check them out and I'm so glad I did. I tried the Lemongrass coconut soup, the short rib Loco Moco and Pineapple upside down cake. All of these items far exceeded my expectations. The soup was great, all the flavors of the lemongrass, coconut and crab came through. The loco Moco was so good!! Shredded short rib, fried egg, gravy and rice. My only complaint was there was far too much onion crisps, but I just removed what I didn't want so it wasn't a big deal. Pineapple upside down cake was good, served warmed up with a scoop of ice cream. In conclusion, I regret not giving this place a chance sooner. It's definitely far superior to islands and I will be back for sure. Update: I just ordered the loco Moco again and this time they gave me fried rice without asking. NOTE: it taste much better with steamed rice!!
Love the food, and drinks, some good specials as well. Would like a few more non-pork dishes. Also not sure how the food orders work, however a lady that came 20 minutes after I got seated, got her food (apparently the same dish as mine) about 15 minutes prior to me. Not sure about that one. Otherwise, everything was great
Canoe House was a new spot to try with a cool vibe and cozy atmosphere. While it can be a bit loud at times, it's a great spot for indoor small or group events. The food was very good and rather unique. If you're in the area, give it a try.
We arrived by accident at this lovely restaurant. A smart clean, Cafe style establishment. We were impressed with the staff and the quality of the food. It's obviously a place that people care about and love. Everything we ordered was delicious and presented with care. We will be back when we are in Pasadena. Mahalo.
Have been here twice. Previously for drinks and appetizers. This time it was dinner. Great service but my burger was just normal. I could tell it was a frozen Patty and not a fresh one that was hand formed. For the price, I expect a good, flavorful fresh patty.
Went here for lunch on a Saturday and was surprised that we were able to be seated immediately. I hadn't been here in over a year and weekends were always very busy with a 10+ minute wait. The waitress arrived promptly, and the rest of the visit went on without a hitch. Orders were prepared, but the cook forgot to include a side, which the waitress corrected quickly. Portions were a bit smaller than I had remembered, so just a little disappointed about that( considering the pricing). But all was very tasty. Reccommemded to go for Brunch until 2pm, some very good menu choices, and they have certain specials on different days of the week that may interest those looking for happy hour places.
Canoe House is a Hawaiian island-inspired restaurant offering casual eats with a tiki bar that offer island drinks. We were greeted by a young hostess and were seated immediately. For years I have driven by this spot but never had the courage to check it out until today. I love their atmosphere and layout design. Food menu was vast as well as their drinks. I had a Thai Chicken Salad and lemonade. It was very fulfilling, satisfying and refreshing. Our male server was competent and amiable. Overall, it’s a good hawaiian restaurant. I will certainly come back.
Located in South Pasadena, this place is a nice spot for Hawaiian inspired dishes. The place is decorated to look like you are in Hawaï and this is a nice touch to help with your dining experience. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was more of a fusion style and was quite delicious. My party had the fried rice and Udon noodles and we all enjoyed our food, which was served in generous portion. Overall a good dining experience worth testing.
A nice neighborhood tropical themed restaurant. I wouldn't exactly call it Hawaiian, but they do have a few Hawaiian choices on the menu. The nachos are very good, they're made with pulled pork (think kalua pig). Also you can get spam musubi. These are the most "Hawaiian" items I've tried on the menu. The rest of the menu I'd refer to as "tropical" themed. Never-the-less Canoe House has a great atmosphere, and the food is great. They have good drinks if you like an occasional cocktail, and a good happy hour.
Food was pretty good not great The Moscow mule tequila tastes like Vodka but may have been the ginger beer combo, I wasn’t crazy about it.
Met up with a group of friends here for our Cinco de Mayo dinner celebration and had a lovely time! Food was decent, drink specials to suit all tastes, vibes were chill and fun, and service was excellent - shout out to our server Mackenzie for taking such great care of us! While this is a Hawaiian-themed restaurant, we opted to celebrate here bc they have a variety of tacos on the menu as well as margaritas. It was a great spot bc it was lively without being crazy busy and overrun for the holiday. We made a reservation ahead of time and were seated immediately upon arrival. For our food, several of us got the Aloha fish tacos, some pork tacos, a moco loco, and an order of Parmesan truffle fries. I was one of the fish taco orders and I opted for the side of gazpacho which was a unique menu item. A sampled the truffle fries and they were delicious with a nice texture. The fish tacos were plated beautifully but were very bland and the fried fish had a strong oil flavor that tasted old so I wouldn’t get this again. But the gazpacho was surprisingly delicious- it’s a cold tomato style soup that tasted like a nice salsa and the large bits of avocado really made it a nice accompaniment. I also couldn’t resist trying a side of their macaroni salad and it was a solid recipe - if you like macaroni salad it won’t disappoint. Our table enjoyed several varieties of the margaritas as well as a tiki torch drink from the specials menu and all seemed to enjoy the libations. We also tried the pineapple upside down cake and it was a hit as well. For the hubby, I took home an order of the bow tie pesto pasta with salmon and a pineapple upside down cake and he loved all of it. The coconut ice cream that comes with the cake is especially nice. The decor here is reminiscent of a beach cottage and is really fun - the bar area even has a huge outrigger canoe hanging from the ceiling and beachy tiki hut bar vibes. Prices are mid range and portions are ample. There’s also plenty of free parking out front and in back in lots as well as some street parking in the surrounding area.
What a neat find I was just driving around South Pasadena when I drove by the place. The wife and I were hungry and since we love everything Hawaii and tiki we had to stop and eat. The food was great and the service was nice and friendly. My only complaint is that the music should have been Hawaiian or at least Polynesian. Other than that I would still recommend this place.
Our server was top notch, very aware of our table....a joy to have as wait staff! Food was incredible, prep was top notch, portion sizes were varied. General atmosphere was tiki lounge lite, a fun, Cali casual/island theme very comfy. Bartender knew her way around mixology....no complaints!
The burger was fantastic, the service needed some help. Though charming, our waiter just hasn't learned time management in his position. Had to get our own straws and own napkins later in the meal. Food was good, management sub-par.
I was very excited to see this place open back up after the pandemic. However I was disappointed to see some of my favorite entrées removed from the menu. I tried a new menu item and enjoyed it. Overall the vibe of the place is not what it was before the pandemic. Went from being my favorite brunch place in Pasadena to a basic brunch place.
It's a nice, family friendly restaurant in South Pasadena. The food isn't too bad but for anyone who has spent some time in Hawaii, it would be obvious that their menu is nothing like what you'd expect from "Hawaiian" food. They have indoor and outdoor seating available.
I used to go to this restaurant when it was called wild times now. It's canoe house. I am so surprised that it is still up and running. It smells in there. It just seems run down the food so so. Sorry, I really tried
Let’s just call this “empty table” review. We have been here for an hour or more. Our waitress came once to apologize for shortage in the kitchen. But being with two kids, I think service can be way better…. Some food arrived…over one hour after order. 2 orders out of 8 are incorrect! Really? Update: food was good. To give them credit - they did give our party 25% off. Changed starts from 1 to 3
The dining itself is cool and the staff is attentive and courteous, but the food is sub-par. Hawaiian food- Not! Should not be branding or cloaking as Hawaiian. Delete the island motif and just go with what the dish is, no expectations dismayed. Fish n chips...epic fail. Sorry for this critical review but I was utterly disappointed. Maybe when I go back next time, I'll stick to the wine and just parm garlic fries...
My wife and I have been to this place three times on the same days since we take our children to martial arts near by. The service has been good, the staff friendly, and the food very good. I went today and received poor service. Although the hostess seated me promptly at a table a few feet from the end of the bar near the window, I waited 7 minutes and no one came to the table to acknowledge or greet me. I watched the bartender go back and forth making drinks that printed up on the machine for patrons that were in the restaurant and then saw him chatting with the servers several times; not sure what is about. The manager was chatting also. More orders printed up and the bartender made the drinks, then started washing glasses less than 10 feet away from me. I was staring at them; no one even noticed. When I got up to leave, patrons at the bar stared since they knew I was not served. You meet and great a client in a few minutes. The hostess should also let the server/bartender know they have been seated. It was not busy at 7 p.m. Went to McDonalds since I had to pick my son up soon. I got better service and only paid $3.09. Very disappointing.
They have side, back and street parking available, Staff is friendly. Prices are above average. Food.... well it was eh. Their tortilla chicken soup and their hummus arei good, their Thai salad was overdressed, too sweet, too spicy, and the chicken was burnt. Their sand dabs filet had bones, it was extremely salty, their vegetables were decent but again very salty, and the golden mashed potatoes were very good. Their overall food concept seems good but not the culinary execution. The atmosphere is nice they even have an outside pit but is a bit small inside especially their bar.
This restaurant is not really dog friendly and I had a service animal. They didn't know the 2 questions to ask. This means the staff is untrained.
My group and I had a very negative experience at Canoe House. Initially, we reserved a table for 8 and the server and food were excellent. Toward the end of our dinner, another server approached our table and said "I have someone coming on a wheelchair and you guys need to leave" while gesturing with his hand toward the door. The place was mostly empty and the party in question did not have reservations for another 15 minutes. We were surprised and caught off guard. Of course we would never impede someone with an accomodation need, but the way the served handled the situation was extremely unprofessional and rude. The restaurant manager Francisco was apologetic and agreed that the manner in which the server approached our group was not right. Overall Canoe House seems like a great place, but the way the dinner ended, with the sudden asking of us to leave truly soured the entire experience.
I highkey lol liked the Atmosphere of this retro lookin place. It has a Hawaiian themed Diner, Tiki Torch Island type resto, Lu-ao fiesta feels to it. The wait staff all wore Hawaiian shirts. So you would THINK that the service would be welcoming and hospitable being that they perpetuate Hawaiian culture. But thats not the Spirit I felt and received. Collectively I feel as tho the servers were not very Friendly. From my observation it seemed as tho they all LIKE to huddle together in a circle chit chatting, laughing and socializing with each other more than tending to the customers. In fact there were these two ladies (customers) in front of us that I suppose got really irrate from the long wait of their own waitress that it prompted her to approach the waitress upfront to tell her that they were "ready to order". It was so awkward. Tho me and the husband were a little more assertive so Jonathan (our waiter) was able to get the order and have the Food ready in a timely manner. HOWEVER: I did NOT really like my Omellette as I specifically instructed them to make it well done. But it was all RUNNY and wet. I Did not care for that at all Furthermore, It was the hashbrowns instead that they made well done! A request I did NOT make, nor asked for. My hashbrowns were crusty, Burnt and hard to eat. In any case I did not enjoy this meal but determined to make the best out of it. And truth be told had Jonathan been a lil bit more ATTENTIVE and Nicer this mistake proly wouldve been forgiven. Because altho He seems like a sweet guy he was more interested in kee-hee-ing and hobnobing lol lowkey flirting with the "cute manager" than he was interested in waiting on clients. Because as soon as he gave the food he totally disappeared. In fact we kept grabbing his attention for several things that was needed. Whether forgetting my toast, or water needed refilling, or getting the check, or whatever else that was needed. It was like hailing a cab w Him lol and mind you Im not hater. I like it when Employees are happy and get along with each other. But I believe the Customers should come FIRST and foremost. Ultimately: we did NOT enjoy our time in your Restaurant as I initially thought I would. And trust me Im already very outgoing and friendly to the STAFF as best as I can to create a rapport. But like I said Jonathan was more interested in creating a connection with his Manager on duty lol than his customers. Understandably so. I mean the manager was cute. But common now Jonathan, Do better Dear. Thank You anyway...
Unfortunately there was no manager available to troubleshoot issues with customers on a Saturday. Was only one server, who had time to only take quick orders, then sling the food onto the tables. Negative attitude.
The place has free parking. Its a nice simple diner. They have the brunch which is per plate purchase. There is nothing special about their food sadly. All their breakfast brunch items you can make at home yourself for way cheaper. Every plate is $17.00 and up for some eggs or for french toast not worth it. The food has hardly any taste. Very simple. We tried the bottomless mimosas which they hardly ever refilled for $15.50. Not worth it. They were also majority juice. Then the waitress had attitude because we had to get up and ask for the refill since no one was coming to refill it. She was very unprofessional and acted like if the mimosas were coming out of her pocket. Do not recommend this place.
