Gatehouse Restaurant offers a memorable fine-dining experience with beautifully prepared food and outstanding service from culinary students. The 5-course tasting menu and wine pairings are highly recommended, especially for lunch. Some found portions small.

You cannot beat this place for value for dollar. You're going to get the food from chefs that are going to be at your favorite restaurant, just at a much reduced price. For dinner, being able to get four courses for $55 is incredible treat in Napa. It is one of my must stop places when we are visiting various wineries that we are members of.
Even though there are just two professional employees (the chef and the maitre’d), everyone else being senior students of the CIA, but you can really feel their enthusiasm in putting their craft and service to use. The result is a heartwarming experience that really won my wife and I over. The current chef’s creations reflect his 11 years in Vietnam and bear interesting combinations of flavors, and definitely get the wine pairing, one of the best I’ve had anywhere. The price makes this experience an absolute must if you are in Napa!
Wow! This restaurant is amazing. The food is very good. The Julia's feast is prepared just right... the chicken is moist and juicy. The red sauce or provencal was tasty. The mashed potatoes were creamy and buttery and super delish. Order vegetables on the side because they generally do not come with the dish. The winners are very good and they have a great selection. The desserts are also amazing. We ordered the peach crumble and the creme brulee. The staff are super attentive and friendly. You get a five star experience at a three star price!
Plentiful choices of innovative dishes in a fixed price meal made by students of the CIA. The lobster cavatelli was a little salty and spicy, the striped bass was cooked both crispy and tender inside, the goddess salad had a good variety of greens/veggies and light sauce. Service was staffed by students, happy to support their work!
What a great place to go with your friends and family highly suggested when you do come here make sure you look at the menu ahead of time and also have reservations as they fill up quite quickly. This is not a animal family restaurant but is 100% accessible to anyone and Capt highly suggested by anyone who is having a good time with their family in the Napa Valley
The food is delicious, the service is very good, and the ambiance is more intimate than it was several years ago (before the CIA moved the restaurant to the gatehouse from the main building). The menu items are of the current trend: limited but diverse selection of dishes, with each featured food having a supporting cast of bits of intriguing ingredients, seemingly with no ingredient shared among multiple dishes. The recommended wine pairings were good, but I wish they would not use port-type glasses for ALL of the dessert wines; the sauternes bouquet wasn't accessible in that glass. Overall, we enjoyed our meal.
To be able to enjoy a high-end 4 course meal under $100 is a rare find, especially in Napa! Being able to support the education of aspiring chefs while enjoying a wonderful meal is a win-win. Their menu also catered to vegetarians and vegans . You get to choose either a 3 or 4 course meal, with the freedom to select from 4 categories. The only complaints I had was that the bread and garlic butter were on the saltier ends, and the tables were a little too close to each other. Otherwise, I would definitely recommend the Gatehouse!
Nice staff and professional service. Me and my partner met up with friends for dinner in Napa, and this was their recommendation. The food was flavorful, and the presentation was beautiful. Don't come expecting full portions, because this is more of a tasting menu. Our friend is also a wine connoisseur so we ended up with a $100 bottle of delicate red wine on our table. The perfect fine-dining experience!
I can’t say enough good things about our experience. From our first bite to our last, my parents and I loved every bit, and I think in both the service and the flavor you can tell that these chefs love what they do. I think they should update the playlist a bit, but beyond that one minor nitpick, our experience was near-surreal. The location is gorgeous, too! Can’t wait to return, and best of luck to all the soon-to-be graduates!
A unique dining experience in the valley that’s well worth it. Gatehouse is run by the Culinary Institute of America students who are fun to watch do their thing. With the 3-course meal, we had the carrots, the pork loin, the pasta, and ended with a fig cake. The food was fairly unique in its preparation and well prepared. The meal is also very affordable, even with the wine pairing.
We had the absolute pleasure of dining at Gatehouse and our servers Kenji and Jordan were absolutely amazing. They made us feel so special and made it such an enjoyable date night for my husband and I. Each course was beautifully curated, the students were very knowledgeable, and the menu was amazing. We even got to tour the back kitchen and meet the head chef. We can't wait to come back and dine again!
This is an experience! Not only is the food as excellent as you would expect, but the ambiance is phenomenal. All I can say is treat yourself and don't miss out on an unforgettable experience.
They say the CIA is the Harvard of culinary schools. I’d respectfully disagree and say that not only is it the Harvard, but it’s also the Hogwarts of culinary schools. First reaction from the first bite was: Oh. My. God. You can’t beat dishes that hit every taste bud and give you savory, umami, sweet, bitter, smoky, and nutty. This meal was the best meal of our Napa trip by a long shot (the other reviews before mine about this being a James Beard level experience are no joke). We had the Mexican-themed meal and my girlfriend and I are not fans of Mexican food in general. Despite this, we loved every single dish and polished each plate. Suddenly, Mexican food was our favorite. Every component was intentional and worked to give the dish balance. Many ingredients are grown right on the campus that you can see walking around and are used in the dishes. At one point we were given sauces to complement our 2nd and 3rd courses. We whined and complained when the waiter took the sauces away before our dessert course because we wanted to finish them. Literally wanted to eat them on their own. The flavors just danced and stimulated our palates like few meals have, and we’ve been around NYC and Philly restaurants for quite some time. Service and ambiance are amazing and flawless like the other reviews so won’t belabor the point. Timing, pacing, attention to detail and needs of diners, all on point and are Michelin level. The students involved are those passionate enough to stay in their schooling this far in so the effort and care is there. If I REALLY had to critique something, and this is pulling hairs, it would be the squash blossom dish. The textures weren’t our favorite on the tlacoyo for us (again, not too familiar with Mexican food so this may be our lack of understanding/appreciation) and the flavor/seasoning was a little flat compared to the other dishes. Still giving 5 stars because the experience was that good. If you are a foodie and/or appreciate fresh, quality ingredients and the culinary process, this is for you. My girlfriend and I were genuinely sad when our dinner was over. We were also watching Next Gen Chef on Netflix so this experience was just the perfect/fitting end to our Napa vacation. I could keep going but no one wants to hear my rambling anymore. Just come.
I had the best ceviche I ever had on our visit on November 6, 2025. It was stunningly presented and contained a lot of very fresh seafood not all of which I can remember, but it was presented in a coconut sauce with dots of green oil (pumpkin maybe) and topped with a baked or fried slice of plantain balanced on top. There were also nasturtium leaves placed around the ceviche and it was beautiful to look at as well as eat. I followed up with stuffed roasted quail, also beautifully presented and prepared and my husband and I both finished with a delicious passionfruit cheesecake. My husband had little pieces of lamb filets with a variety of vegetables for his main course, roasted to pink perfection and again the presentation couldn't have been more appealing. Most of the greens and the mini peppers and tomatoes we saw growing in the huge vegetable garden all around the restaurant and the Culinary Institute. We were also grateful that the professor who was in charge of that particular evening's students (I think he was their hospitality prof) made it possible for us to have dinner there that very evening, even though the restaurant was fully booked. Kudos to the students of the CIA. They are certainly set up for a successful career in hospitality and, of course kudos to their teachers. Bravo!
The service by the students is outstanding. The front of house makes you question how Top Chef restaurant wars consistently have rocky front of house. They conducted front of house with immaculate top notch hospitality. The food was exquisite. Honestly, on par with James Beard nominated restaurants in terms of quality and execution. This is my second time here, and it always exceeds my expectations.
We had such a wonderful experience dining at the student restaurant! From start to finish, the service and attention to detail were top-notch. Dylan, our server, was absolutely amazing—professional, friendly, and even took the time to open the wine we brought with care and ease. Jake was fantastic as well, delivering each course with a warm smile and impeccable timing. In the kitchen, Riley was not only serving up delicious dishes but also serving looks—truly a star behind the scenes! Ashley, the instructor on the floor, struck the perfect balance between mentoring and ensuring guests had an excellent experience. She checked in with us just the right amount and even thoughtfully folded our napkins when we stepped away—such a lovely touch that didn’t go unnoticed. To top it all off, the coffee and latte art were beautiful—almost too pretty to drink (but we did, and it was great). Kudos to the whole team. It’s clear there’s a lot of passion, talent, and dedication behind every plate and interaction. We’ll definitely be back!
Absolutely great value! My wife and I both had their 3-course meal and were extremely satisfied with all aspects of our meal. The kitchen was sending out delicious course after delicious course. We especially enjoyed their Duck Ragu. The Fig Almond Tart was amazing as well. Even their bread service was awesome. The service was spot on. All of the staff were attentive, polite, professional, and personable. Gatehouse Restaurant is definitely worth it!
A great experience We really enjoyed our luncheon The food was wonderful and hearing about our server and what brought them to CIA and helping them hone. Their skills is a great experience. I definitely recommend it to anyone that would like a nice leisure lunch in a friendly atmosphere with incredibly delicious food
Very nice dining experience. Good quality food. Well prepared. The wine pairing is good too. Pricing is great, only thing that could be better is portion sizes. They are a little small. Will certainly come back.
Well deserved 5 star rating! Amazing food, fun atmosphere, and unique experience. Kenji and Jordan were great servers for us, treated us very well, and showed us around the kitchen at the end - great job guys!
This is one of my favorite restaurants to visit for special occasions. Their food is amazing , almost Michelin start restaurants quality with larger portion . I came back for my best friend ‘s b day with 3 girls and we had a blast . We picked 4 courses and every dish was spectacular with full of flavors from each ingredients. I highly recommend this place for anniversary or birthday diners !
One of a kind. Utterly fantastic. This was actually my first time going, but my mother had been here many times. All of the food, from the starters to the appetizers to the entrees to the desserts were fantastic for lunch today. The service was impeccable, the atmosphere was utterly perfect for a lunch, and I left stuffed so silly that I couldn't believe it. Every flavor, subtle or loud, was divine. From the focaccia to the chai creme brulee, everything was amazing. Our server was utterly wonderful. Thank you! Six stars to all of the wait staff!!! 🩷🩷🩷
Great food and service! I was amazed at the quality and presentation of all of the dishes. The work, care, and thought that goes into each dish did not go unnoticed. If you have a chance, make sure to eat here. The students run a fine restaurant.
An exquisite dining experience with an incredibly creative menu that will delight the senses. Choose from three-course or four-course options and add wine-pairings if so inclined. The grounds are beautiful, and the buildings have visual appeal due to their age. You will not get copious amounts of mediocre food. Instead, you will get right-sized portions that are expertly crafted and presented.
This was our first time, and we will DEFINITELY be back. Tatiana was our server and she helped make our experience super memorable (we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary). The food was spectacular, every dish was amazing. Thank you for making our special day even more special!
Beautifully prepared food, so tasty and delightful. Service from graduating students was outstanding! Truly a memorable experience! Highly recommend!
Overall great meal , cooked and served from students but couldn't tell rival, surpass many restaurants in yountville. Price for 5 course tasting at $45 is a great deal , especially for such tasty good quality food . Highly recommend it for lunch.
My husband and I love Gatehouse - it’s one of our go-tos in the area. Upon arriving, take a left towards the small stone house and find the parking area behind it. Otherwise you may have to circle around and/or walk a good amount to get to the restaurant. The food, pairings, hospitality, and vibes are all top notch. To think that everyone there is a student (albeit about to graduate) is really incredible. It’s a prefix menu - you select one dish from four options per course, three or four courses total, your choice. You can also add wine pairing. When the bill comes, everything is in included, with service, so you are requested to not add anything additional. A wonderful, upscale meal at a great value.
We had a wonderful experience dining here last night. The restaurant is inside a little cottage building and beautifully decorated. The staff were all very friendly and helpful in explaining the courses and each entree. We went for the four course meal and the dishes were delicious! The duck salad was fresh and tasty. The grilled octopus was nicely cooked. The smoked beef cheek was very tender with loads of flavor. The warm pumpkin tres leche was amazing! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Torn between three and four stars. Pros: good food, very well priced prix fixe menu, and excellent super-fresh ingredients. Cons: amateur service, and expensive wines. The 20% tip inclusion in the bill also didn’t resonate well with their “no tipping” policy (they are all students after all). Lastly, the gatehouse is a small space, separate from the main hall of the Culinary Institute.
Service was superb. The students work very hard and are a charming lot—every one of them. Very attentive and fast with any request. The food though was hit and miss. The rolls and desert were our highlights, and we left quite full, but we still wanted to enjoy the appetizers and main courses more. The pork dish was promising but overcooked and a tad chewy, while the spicy mole that did not pair with the spicy fritters well. Too much spice. The fritters were cooked to perfection—light and crispy, with a light heat. The mole could have been sweeter or simply richer to balance the fritters. Was also not a fan of the new smoked trout dish, the was just too smoky for me to be paired with the well-prepared potato and au jus. I am likely over rating a bit based on the effort of the team.
In my own opinion I think this place is a bit overpriced for the amount of food you get. My favorite, I think, was the wine pairing. Great job on that one. The chocolate dessert was amazing 👏 not a big fan of the rhubarb dessert. Great attention and hospitality. The students did an amazing job.
A good fine dining experience, with lîmited choice for a 3 course meal (4 course with dessert), with friendly student servers coordinating plate deliveries. The Pork shank was overcooked and tough. The Duck appetizer was chewy. However the Crab Cakes were very good. The Arugula salad was a little bitter. Wine pairing is available and there is a lîmited wine list by the bottle or glass. The restaurant is simple, bright and clean.

Unique experience. Wouldn’t do it again. $207 for two 4 course meals and a glass of wine. The portions were very small. We were hungry after. Also the tastes while creative were not decadent. Just ok. Presentation and atmosphere are what you pay for here.

Restaurant Review: 1-10 scale, 5 is average. I'm a fairly tough reviewer. Restaurants are compared to their peers, i.e. fast food to fast food, fine dining to fine dining, etc. Gatehouse Restaurant - St. Helena (Napa Valley), CA Ambiance: 2.5 Service: 7.5 Food: 4 Price: 2 Overall: 4 Notes: This is a restaurant staffed entirely by culinary institute students near downtown St. Helena. The 4 course dinner was OK, not great. I felt the food was bland and under seasoned, but presented very nicely and somewhat inventive. By far the worst part of the experience was the wine paring. In Napa Valley, NONE of the paired wines were Napa or even California wines. They were all European, French and Italian generally. I'm not a European wine expert by any means but, to my palate, none of the wines were even close to good. Every varietal was extremely watery and almost tasteless. At a Napa Valley restaurant failing to pair Napa wines with the food is a huge missed opportunity. Even worse, the wines selected were so awful that, to me, it reflected poorly on the culinary school itself. It's very hard to trust the judgment of anyone who thought the wines they selected were worth serving. Otherwise, the students were nice, prompt, and polite. The environment and decor was plain and underwhelming. Overall, this is a miss.
