Opinions de Ruthie's Tex-Mex Sugar Land
Simply our favorite TexMex on this side of town. Service is terrific. Vibe is awesome. Super easy to support this local business - even if the owner is a USNA grad. (No we do not smoke cigars inside the restaurant!) Beat Navy!
We LOVE Ruthie's!!! It is our favorite restaurant for Mexican Food. No one can do fajitas like they can. No one! Dulce and the staff are exceptional. We are always excited when we get a chance to come here and see Dulce's smile.
The tacos and nachos here are not the same as the ones I’ve had before, and I mean that in the best way. They’re even better than what I’ve tried at other restaurants. Everything tastes fresh, authentic, and full of flavor. This might be the best Mexican food I’ve had so far!
Amazing service from both Dominga and Nicolas. Great food and atmosphere. Margaritas are amazing 👏🏼 they have loteria (Mexican bingo) night on Thursdays, and Latin Music Saturday nights.
Being vegan I asked if they could make a special order of just corn tortillas and grilled veggies. They had no issues at all with my request. They are super friendly and the service is great! The prices are very reasonable and the chips and salsa are really good!
We love Ruthie’s! It’s always a good time. Food is great and reasonably prices, friendly service, TVs to watch games but not too loud so you can still have a conversation at your table. :) Highly recommend for dinner with the fam or a large group. Very accommodating!
Great food at reasonable prices and the people are amazing. We shared a mixed beef and chicken fajitas plate. We always have to get a couple of ground beef enchiladas any time we try a new place....these were really really great. We loved the queso and guacamole. They offer a military discount as a way of thanking you for your service. We'll be back for more of these goodies.
I nothing but GREAT things to say about Ruthie's! It's hands down my FAVORITE Mexican restaurant in Houston. The service is impeccable, I have grown very fond of Dulce I'm always happy to see her smiling face! We make it in at least 3 times a month! The Chimichanga is my favorite dish 😋 The Margarita's are awesome ( I always get the Mango Margarita with Chamoy AND Tajin). As long as they're open I'll be there!
I had a great meal experience with ordering and eating. The price is fair for the amount of food and food taste fresh and hot. I ordered crispy and soft tacos, they came with rice and beans. I ordered fries and a flauta a la carte. They added a side of chips and salsa to the order. I had enough to share with my family. It was delicious to each of us.
We came for an early dinner at 4:00pm on Sunday. There was only one waiter and the restaurant was fairly busy, service was slow. My husband ordered the Chicken Burrito and I ordered the Chalupas New Braunfels dinner which was supposed to come with two chalupas but only had one. I questioned why there was only one and was told they thought it was the lunch version although they didn’t sell that one on Sunday. They did bring the second one. The food was good. I especially liked the beans.
Finally got to check out Ruthie’s. Went at 5:30 on Saturday hoping we’d get there before the busier time. About half full with a good crowd at the bar watching the Astros. Ordered Banderas platter and my husband had chicken enchiladas. Didn’t feel like drinks so just got water which tasted straight from the tap with a slice of lemon which helped to cover the tap water flavor. The food was good and served quickly and hot. My platter included carnitas which was really REALLY tasty. Rest of the meal was good but nothing extraordinary. Next time I’ll try the fabled fajitas and hope it meets the reviews others gave reported. All in all a decent basic texmex experience and happy to have them in the neighborhood!
We were hungry, like moths, drawn in by the bright colors. The margarita was strong, tasted wonderful. House, frozen, salt on the rim. We ordered and were woefully saddened by the utter lack of taste. The bartender tried, but i was not drunk enough to enjoy bland chicken in a tastless sauce. I feel their chef is alergic to salt and/or any other seasoning besides pepper. The table sauces were great and went fantastically with the chips. Service was good and the atmosphere was fun! We will give it another try another day and see if the food was a temp problem or not.
We have been coming for years. This time , we ordered the tacos al carbon. They were delish. The charro beans needed more flavoring though. We will always come back here as it was one of the first places we came to when we first moved to the area. We are going tinted bingo night.
I’m not real big on Tex-Mex but this one of the best I’ve had. Our server was friendly and got the chance to meet the owner William who was very humble! The tamales are good size and the portions are more than what you pay for. Thumbs up William!
*This review is specifically for take out* I love Ruthie’s. They catered my wedding and we dine in about once a week. Last night I wasn’t feeling well so I ordered door dash and I was so disappointed.. This is the second time I’ve ordered door dash with them. Order was 2 cheese enchilada plate (in restaurant it comes with beans, rice and slaw) No slaw luckily I ordered some for $3, and it was about 2 bites… 2 ground beef chimichangas. They were for lack of a better word, down right nasty and barely filled. The beans and rice for each meal barely even fill the small container they were put in. I love this restaurant but you guys are totally disrespectful to take out orders. You gave me less than 1/3 cup refried beans and rice. And yes I did measure. I paid more for take out than I would have in restaurant and the food was sub par and we were still hungry because the portions were cut way down. Please do better.
Nice decor and friendly service, but the food is not good. We ordered enchiladas with chili con carne. The chili was obviously from a can. Scraped that off to leave plastic tasting cheese enchiladas. Rice and beans were very bland. Would not recommend Ruthies with so many other choices in the Houston metro.
The enchilada sauce is not good and they drown the cheese enchiladas in it. It’s a mushy tasteless mess. The beef tostada purchased a la carte was better. Rice and beans served are bland. The decorative dining room was the nicest part about this Tex Mex restaurant. Waitress was okay but I was disappointed to be charged a $1.50 extra when we asked for additional salsa. That’s ridiculous! Also, the restrooms are in bad need of updating or at least they need to repair because there is a strong pungent smell of mildew. It is unbearable. There are too many other good places to eat at to want to return. The food and service were subpar. Short of the nice greeting when we arrived and the festive atmosphere in the main dining room, there wasn’t much else welcoming about this establishment.
Place is a rip off $12 for a michilada. Then i ordered fajitas for 1 $25 i asked them if they could spice them up. Make them extra spicy. They added $8 to my bill for adding some peppers. It wasnt spicy at all my 9 year old ate some. Said not spicy. Wont be going back
Chicken soup tasted like slightly seasoned water for the broth. Queso tasted like a box of Velveeta. Not the same as from the old days in New Territory! Wouldn't eat there again if it were free!
Waiting on the phone 20 min. No one picks up and then they do, they blame the 20 person party they’re assisting. Seems like only 1 employee. Ordered 3 items, 1 was not the correct item. Lastly, they charge a 5% packaging fee which you only see when you pickup the food. I’ve been recommending this place since they opened, but never again. Going to do the opposite now. ~$50 for lunch specials for 2 with no drinks. No thanks
Short answer : Not ever stepping foot in here again after several years of patronage at this restaurant. Two locations, two different experiences. At the first one the staff was nice, helpings were plentiful, and most concerns about my experience were met with true concern and hospitality. This new location is a dumpster fire and my patience is exhausted.I’ve had attitudes as greetings, my money thrown on the bar counter during payment, price jumps unlisted on the website, and a bagging fee for WHAT? On top of all these things, the manager is unconcerned with the subpar quality of his employees and has no intention on making a better experience in the future. So this is an end of an era for my quick meals, Friday night social hour, and family time with Ruthies. Good Luck for whoever comes next. Pictures for reference (:
