Being back after a long time, it was great to enjoy some old favorites. The deserts in particular blew me away this time. Check out the photo of the crepes with jam i also posted. Do NOT skip desert at this place.

I've never been to Romania so I can't say how authentic it is, but it probably is considering I'm always the only non-Romanian eating here when I visit! What can I say? I love a good steak, but I find beef a bit too heavy so I come here for their pork steaks (ceafa de porc), something I don't find in many other restaurants. It's also fun to get some mamaliga (like polenta) on the side instead of the usual potatoes, and a glass of Romanian wine helps it all go down a treat.

There for a retirement party. We sat outside. I ordered the grilled chicken breast with mash potatoes. It was awesome! Perfectly cooked! The salmon looked and smelled good. Going to get that next time.

Great authentic Romanian food made with love. For those of us living so far from home, this is THE place, many of the dishes on the menu remind me of my grandma’s cooking. Don’t leave without trying Papanasi for desert, it’s a Romanian specialty - homemade deep fried donuts covered in sweet cream and homemade fruit preserves...yum

Romanian garden is simply fantastic and we return regularly. The food is superbly cooked home style and very well priced. Service is friendly and excellent along with a nice, lively at times atmosphere. You could be there during a Romanian party or wedding for example. Honestly everything is superb but stand outs are the smoky eggplant appetizer and very fresh...

Fantastic cuisine with a great Romanian feel and low prices considering the amount of food. We had a group of 19 including small children and the service was outstanding and accommodating even with the noisy little ones. Highly recommended!

Not that many vegetarian options, but place is so authentic. Be ready for Romanian modern music.

I do like their fried meatballs. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Quite a treat and wonderful for sharing. There are platters with all sort of spread. And plenty of bread to spread it on. The soup is quite spicy by itself but they do give you a scoop of sour cream to calm it down. Everything is delicious and no too expensive. Definitely a good spot to fill your bellies.

As a Romanian myself, I was quite skeptical of the food here. Having tried it for myself, I have to say I was wrong! This place is wonderful! Their meals are made in the traditional Romanian way, and they are delicious. The only downside was that they ran out of the traditional Romanian plum brandy when we went.

Romanian Garden – Sunnyside, Queens, NY ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A hidden gem in Queens that delivers authentic Romanian comfort food with heart, warmth, and flavor. We started with the cascaval pane (fried cheese) and deviled eggs — simple, bold, and perfectly seasoned. The sarmale (cabbage rolls) were easily the star: juicy, tender, and slow-cooked in a tomato-forward sauce with a side of mamaliga (polenta) that was rich and buttery. I ordered the liver and onions, and I’ll be honest — it exceeded expectations. Perfectly seared, deeply flavorful, and served with rustic potatoes that soaked up every bit of sauce. The Romanian sausages were hearty and packed with spice, paired beautifully with crispy roasted potatoes and a sweet red pepper sauce. Live music (yes, polka!) made the meal feel like a full experience, not just a dinner. Service was warm, portions were generous, and the vibe felt like stepping into someone’s lively Eastern European kitchen. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to explore Romanian cuisine in NYC. I’ll definitely be back. — George Berlioz, Food Traveler (Google Local Guide, reviews

Exceptional place to celebrate anything or just because. It is very tasty, delicious food, fast service, and a wonderful atmosphere. If you don't go there, you don't know what you're missing, not mentioning the entertainment, and the fact that you have a place to dance. This is my to go restaurant when I miss Romania, when I celebrate an event or gather with friends and family. Can't wait till I get to go again

First time ever having Romanian food with my fellow friends it was superb!! The appetizers was off to a great start, loved everything especially the spicy tomato dip with the homemade sourdough bread and meatballs and traditional dish with polenta and sour cream . Then, I ordered the miteiti (lamb and beef sausage) alongside the traditional drink called must which was also very good! Lastly, the dessert which was reminiscent of a donut has such powerful flavors of the jam and the sweet sour cream which go hand in hand with the dessert. The restaurant was very homely and I would like to extend my deepest thanks to Camelia (sorry if I misspelled your name!) for being so kind and thoughtful and making my Romanian lunch very enlightening and pleasing!! Will definitely tell all my friend now about my memorable experience and come back!

It's a pretty good place, clean, prices are good. We were there on Monday and they still had people celebrating something. Waiter was polite and not disturbing. Light music on the back ground. On weekend more likely they have life music, since we saw podium for musicians. Really good place for locals to hangout and celebrate occasion.

Good authentic Romanian food and a nice ambiance and server....I didn't catch her name(blond) The food is good and authentic but there used to be 4 mititei for $20 now it's gone up to $23 and there's only 3 I felt like they should have done either one but NOT both! I Have been going there from the beginning even when they were at the other 2 locations ...just a bit disappointing!

I have ordered from this restaurant while i visited NY. We stayed 2 nights and we ordered both dinners from here. LOOOVED the food, especially the beef soup and eggplant spread. It was the first time in 2 years that I ate romanian food cooked by someone else and i was not disappointed. They sent a lot of bread (delicious fresh bread) with the meals. I will definitely visit in person next time i visit NY. By the way, my husband also fell in love with the beef soup and lamb pastrami

A Romanian couple married for 60 years highly recommended this restaurant, so I had to try it. The stuffed cabbage, salad, and dessert were excellent. As I don’t eat fried or heavy dough bread, I regretted having the dessert, but it was a sweet experience. The waitress was super kind and nice. Thank you.

I lived two blocks from this restaurant, before it was there. 28 years in Sunnyside. I am excited to get back to eating out. The waitress was helpful and very busy with 3 other tables besides mine. The salad was delicious. Fresh greens and cheese. The fried mozzarella could have been hotter. It doesn’t taste the same when it is room temperature. The Cheese isn’t gooey when you bite into it. It was a little pasty. I had a skirt steak, which was delicious. I would come back for the steak. A little more cooked next time. I ordered medium well and had to eat around the red, bloody pieces. The rice was too mushy. I would order the potatoes next time. Thank you for your service. Stay safe. 🙏🏼☮️😊

Authentic Romanian restaurant. The decoration was like in Romania, the waitress spoke Romanian, the band played Romanian songs, and of course the foods and wine were like in Romania. Everything we ate was delicious, especially their flagship dish, the Romanian sausages, which is a kebab as they do in Romania. warmly recommended.

Very popular in Romanian community and other European diaspora. My first taste of Romanian food. Enjoyed the salads and spreads. Romanian feta was very tasty. Grilled meat dishes were executed well. Ended the meal with extremely generous servings of ice cream and pspanasi which were freshly prepared donuts drizzled with sour cream and cherry

My wife and I go only 3 or 4 times a year but are always satisfied with the quality of the food and the service...it would be nice to have a larger variety of wines both reds and whites. And I like that the the food is not only Rumanian, which is good, but also mainstream European with no false ‘folkloric’ dishes

The Romanian Garden restaurant the was a nice experience. The food was delicious end a very impressive menu with a lot of different choices. The music could use some improvement. Traditional Romanian music would be great in the traditional Romanian restaurant. The service was prompt and nice but not such a great attitude and welcoming experience as we expected.

I eat here whenever I am in NYC, even though it's quite a jog from where I usually stay in Brooklyn. The food is delicious and authentic. As an adventurous eater, I get tripe soup and fried brain. The only reason I do not give a full five stars is because the service is never friendly. Maybe this is cultural, but I have never been made to feel welcome when I eat there. The staff has never been rude to me, but there is never a "thank you for coming" or "did you enjoy your meal" or "please come back." That's ok I guess.....I love the food and am learning to recreate it with the help of Romanian cookbooks and friends. It is definitely worth the trip out to Queens because Romanian cuisine is both unusual and delicious.

Delicious and decadent Sunday brunch. The first thing you see is an entire table loaded with lobster and shrimp. Beyond that, there was just about anything you could want for brunch. Bread, muffins, cakes, croissants, bagels. Smoked salmon with capers. Prosciutto and salami. A cheese assortment. Sushi. Waffles. Omelettes. To balance the richer fare, there were plenty of healthy options like veggies, salads and fresh fruit -- the raspberries and blackberries were especially tasty. Everything I tried, I liked. The wait staff was very attentive without hovering, always replacing plates and napkins when needed and refilling water glasses. They get an A+. A great experience, and I hope to be back for dinner some night soon.

A
Andrew Timosca

Food was good. Very close to what my mom and grandma make at home. The wait staff is a bit cold though. It's great if you don't want to be bothered while you eat. Also seems like a place where Romanian people tend to hang out after work.

S
Susanna Mostaghim

Swung by here on a whim with a friend. The food is okay overall, I mostly enjoyed the assorted pickles as far as savory food goes. I took a star off mostly because the service was a bit slow despite there being only two tables in the restaurant. We were originally seated under a TV that was turned on due to another customer’s request and it was quite loud. Not a pleasant experience and we had to ask to move tables. I believe that they should’ve asked if we wanted to sit elsewhere or if we minded the TV being turned on before they did that. While it might be one customer’s request it’s rather rude to the other. Especially if you only have two parties in the restaurant. But, there is a traditional dessert that is absolutely delicious and was by far my favorite item. It’s this cheesy fried dough with sour cream and jam, highly recommend getting this dish. I would go back just for for that.

S

Food was better than expected. Environment seemed like it can get exciting as it was very large. Looks like they have live bands. I wish it would've been tonight. I'll try again next time.

The Romanian Garden Restaurant in Queens, New York, offers a delightful culinary experience with its authentic Romanian dishes. The cozy ambiance and welcoming staff create a warm atmosphere for diners. The menu boasts a variety of flavorful options, including traditional mămăligă, sarmale, and mouthwatering mici. My latest experience at this restaurant are very alarming for the price increase they have, unbelievable price increase, for that neighborhood, and atmosphere, for 3 people a early dinner actually 2 bears one liter of mineral water, one eggplant salad,2 soups, one plate of mititei ,one plate of stew and a fried mazorella cost us. 164.00 dollars….never again I will go there ,this was my and my friends last time !!!

S
Sparky

Steak was disappointing and waiter brought the side of unseasoned, steamed, bland vegetables half way into the meal. Appetizers are great though, so if you come here order typical Romanian food and not universal things like steak. Tripe soup was incredibly good.

N
Nikola Janjić

Unless you like Romanian food, this would not be the right choice to grab some food. It's not expensive place at all, but they lack hospitality manners. We have waited for our main course for 45 minutes. Service is sloppy, and the worst thing is a bike lane between the restaurant and sitting places in their garden. If you are not careful enough, two-wheelers can hit you anytime! Very dangerous! I will not go over there again.

F
Florin Neamtu

Good food. If you want a taste of Romania this a good stop. Some waiters need to sport a 'welcome' smile and try to accommodate clients. New location is modern and clean, but lacks the cozy feeling of the old one.

Good authentic Romanian cuisine. I think on hot days, cooler meals are better. We had the pork stew which definitely felt homey but maybe the wrong choice for us. Wait time is quite long for meals too, not a bad thing as you know your food is being prepared fresh.

Heribert Villazana
Heribert Villazana

Food was ok, loved the cold appetizer mixed plate, but they need to add more vegetarian, vegan and seafood dishes to the menu. Also the drinks menu is really short, even when they have a full bar they don’t offer cocktails and mixed drinks but the wine is good and prices are fine. I didn’t get to the dessert because the last call for food was my main dish, and later I couldn’t order dessert. I’d come back to try the other fish selections on the menu

P
Peter Heier

The credit card machine has been "broken" for more than two weeks now, the waiter doesn't speak English, even when you read directly from the menu and the food prep time is long. But the food and desserts are good.

We usually love this restaurant and have been coming for years, but sadly this time it failed us. The wait staff are really nice, attentive even though they had a huge party getting underway on the other half of the restaurant. The eggplant salad was scary. It had no taste and resembled playdoo :-( The icra was good. The prices gave really escalated. I understand all restaurants are recovering from Covid but some items were twice what they were in 2022. It used to be nice to go for an early dinner for two with a bottle of wine for 70$ or so but not anymore. Now it’s twice that. The mettite was good (I’m sure I spelled it wrong) The bathrooms were gross. Sticky floors. The bathrooms are down 2 flights of stairs. Not good if you have bad knees. I think this time was a fluke, we’ll still go back at one point.

M
Maria Broughton

I have been to the restaurant recently. The experience has been frustrating and disappointing. The staff is rude and inconsiderate. After I stepped in the restaurant, the staff was engaged in a loud conversation. They were completely ignoring our group of four persons. When we asked if seats were available, the person in charge (manager or owner) shook his head and shrug his shoulders, not even bothering to greet or ask anything or even tell us that seats were unavailable at the time. Then, at a later time, I called for a reservation for another day. When I called to confirm and request an extra seat, they said they cannot do that since they had an event there and the place would be crowded anyway. This was done quite rudely. I do not recommend this restaurant. Even if the food is good, due to the staff's poor public relations skills, your dining experience may be unsatisfactory.

C
Constantin Cosereanu

Cascaval pane was cold and had to be reheated! In Romania it is made on the spot and it is typically flambe! This was made in the morning and reheated in the microwave! Bread was store made so nothing too impressive. Papanasi were very very good. Salata de boeuf was not impressive either. Mititei were good. All wine bottles were 40 dollars which gave me the impression that I was at some sort of Ritz Carlton restaurant based on how expensive it was. Bottom line: overrated and expensive for the value. It was almost empty, no Romanian music either.

T
Theodora Heiset

Every time when i came in NYC i am eating at this restaurant. The food is wonderful and the place is great but the servers are so slow and rude, no Hello no Thank You or checking at the table if everything is good. I've been there for 2h only to eat one course... I just came to eat and go not to stay there for hours and wait to received a good service. I am so sorry for the place but i will not come again if you will not change the attitude and the service. We are in America and you are a restaurant with respect so act like it! The blonde girl was the worst.... she didn't even talk in English and was looking at me like i am crazy when i was talking with her in English! I think she hates her job and she doesn't wanna be there! I am working in this industry and i know how it is so is not any excuse! The owner was there too and she didn't do anything!!! You will lose customers.

R
Robert Winkler

Food was good, but They added items that we didn't order to the bill, enforced a 20% service despite being only 3 people, first waiter didn't speak any Romanian nor English...too bad of an experience...

D
Dragos

This place is very expensive for poorly cooked Romanian food that would get laughed at if served in Romania. Customer service was a bit concerning too, didn't bring out what we ordered and insisted that we never asked for those items. Who does that? The people who are saying the food is really good and the prices are fair are either: Fake accounts or friends of the owner and staff. Nonsense.

F
Funky Brewster

Romanian Garden used to be a very nice decently priced restaurant that we used to travel quite a distance to dine in. Unfortunately, Corona has really done a number on it. Service was spotty and not attentive. The food was mediocre. A special let down were the Mittetei who were practically all raw and funky tasting. The Chorba(Soup) was served cold. Prices are now quite high and to make things worse, the now add 20% service charge and a 4% credit charge surcharge. All in all - worth half, costs double. We won't be back.

A
Ana Tudor

Food at this place is great I love it. However today I was shocked at the service I received. The out door seating was not that crowded, so my friend and I just came casually dressed to eat a soup. We sat down at a table for 2 people and were waiting. Not long after the owner comes and tells us that a reservation was needed and that the table we sat at was “reserved” but usually reserved tables have signs, we didn’t know that and there wasn’t any sign. We came plenty of times here while it was way more busy and there wasn’t a problem then. It seems that she didn’t want us there because maybe the way we were dressed or something so she said the tables were “reserved”. Overall this was a was very embarrassing experience and she was unnecessarily rude and loud.

We went a few weeks ago - my friend and I commuted all the way from South Brooklyn to go to Romanian Garden for lunch on a Saturday. We've always wanted to try Romanian food because this is the only restaurant in NYC that serves Romanian cuisine. When we arrived, all the tables and seats were full. It took awhile to get a waiters attention. When we did, they said there were no seats available, not even an offer to come back another time. I don't want to make such an assumption...was it because of our race? We were 2 East Asians.

Food- except for the Mamaliga, and the Kabab which was ok, the rest of the food and the appetizers were so so. the Schnitzel for my grandchild was not eatable . prices- not reasonable and very high. payments- I wanted to pay with credit card, and I was told that they will add 3.5% surcharge. I was in the place 4 years ago and I wasn't happy, and this is the last time I pay a visit and eat in the place.

I HAVE to write my opinion about this place because I would like the customers to know and to learn from my experience. RG restaurant was sold to Harmony and now this place is managed by their representative,Larisa. I was waiting with excitement the opening of there restaurant under the new ownership because we had a birthday party to celebrate and since most of our guests were Romanian,we chose this place, but we were VERY DISAPPOINTED. 2 weeks before the party we went in person to make the reservation and to request a place were our birthday girl and guests will feel welcomed and relaxed to spend a few hours with us.We were assured that everything will be set and ready to entertain us,meanwhile 5 minutes before we arrived nothing was done. Our guests from NJ arrived a few minutes before and the tables were not ready and when they were ready guess what! we had paper sheets instead of linen tablecloths and paper napkins instead of linen napkins. We didn''t want to make a big deal of this hoping that the rest of the services will be better, but NO!We were helped by a single waitress that was not able to serve the drinks nor to be on time with food or other requests from the guests. God forbid to order french fries!Sincerely they looked and tasted like they were already served to other people and then reheated and served to our table. The steak was hard and doesn't matter how you'll order it,it will be dry and brown. The Romanian sausages (mititei)were done from rotten meat, and barely we made it to the restroom at the end of the "party". The cake that we bought was left on their kitchen counter to melt and put on our table, that in their rush to get read of us was neither cleaned nor prepared for desert. What a shame! We cut the cake because the waitress was serving other people that had to pay her tip according to her qualification,we didn't count! Because we were more than 5 people the tip was added to the bill,18% mandatory. Now judge for yourself! Were was the manager, were were the other waitresses, where was the staff that supposed to serve you and make you feel welcomed in their place! Good bye Romanian Garden! New or old management the food is bad ,service miserable and the prices high!

The food here got us food poisoning!

For years my brother has lived down the street and we've always seen the crowds eating here and thought we should try it. What a mistake. The best part of the meal (and I'm being serious) was the bottle of sparkling water. The bread is tasteless. The pork-stuffed cabbage tasted like it was out of a freezer, the sliced meat and cheese appetizer looked like a lunchables kit, the mixed grill was overcooked, dry and tasteless, and served with a side of vegetables that looked and tasted like they came out of a bag sold in the supermarket freezer department. For this, we paid ~$120. And the service was insanely slow. Never again.

The host is extremely rude, told me I had an hour to order and go because of where she wanted to sit me, saying it was a table for 6, but social distancing is in place so she wouldn’t have been able to sit anyone else at that table so I didn’t understand her logic. The food is generally good but the staff really needs some training on customer service. Because it’s not what you say it’s how you say it.

We had dinner or lunch through the years but the last few times and especially last time was a complete and total horror. $100 for two people 2 small plates with some boeuf, Mashed vegetables, eggplant salads, 6 soup spoons of cooked vegetables 2 soups 1 plate of Mici - 4 pieces of meat with some dry beans salad 1 order of something sweet 1 Bottle of water 1 beer All this food didn't cost more than $20 in ingredients to prepare it This is a huge ripoff , we felt robbed .

the service is not good you have to wait a long time even if nothing is going on. two waitresses and two guests but you have to wait over 15 minutes for the bill and then the amounts on the bill do not match. Too bad the food was good but if you are forced to give a tip of 18% for such a bad service even though one service phoned the phone for 10 minutes and the other did not pay attention to you even though no other guests got anything this is unacceptable. You can also help in a company even if it is not your table, especially if nothing is going on instead of someone with empty plates over 20 minutes not to pay attention and after the sign you want to pay 15 minutes waiting. never again

Terrible experience overall. The food was mid. We asked for a lemonade and they brought us a pre-made one which cost 32 dollars. The glasses were already set on the table and dirty. The bread was already on the table; it was hard and stale. The atmosphere was not great; no Romanian music. They took the chance and added a 20% service fee and had the audacity to hand me a receipt to add the tip. There are better restaurants, even Romanian ones, in the city.

The worst costumer service I have ever experienced. This lady, Gabriela, the owner, she forgot or better say, she have not learned how to greet a costumer. Especially a new costumer. I’ve got the tickets for an event ( technically i bought tickets for the venue) not for the restaurant. To find out that there is a fix menu that I like it or not, I have to purchase, just to be clear, this was nowhere mentioned on the link. Mistake was made between owner and the event manager who forgot to mention many details….. however , the communication was very rude, not even trying to accommodate us since it’s theirs mistake. ComOn people, that’s not my fault was not mentioned anywhere, but you, as an owner, could try to accommodate not to ask us to leave. We spent money to come from CT to your damn restaurant to have the authentic experience, the food and the Moldavian / Romanian experience… but we were not even given a chance. This message is for the owner, greedy for more money, you will get less, be nice to everyone and will come to you. With this attitude you will lose everything….

Sadly I need to write a bad review. I needed a dinner delivery and was actually excited to find this restaurant on the delivery app, since my grandma was Romanian and I miss her cooking. So we ordered a selection – the potato salad appetizer, two soups, the 4-meat patties entrée called Mititei and the sweetbreads entrée, and a side of rice. The potato salad was spoiled (!). They either did not refrigerate it properly or kept it for too many days but is was fermenting and went straight to the trash. The bean soup was serviceable, but the chicken soup had no flavor. Come to the entrees - they only sent 3 meat patties instead of 4, and the rice was bland. As for the sweetbreads, they called to tell me that they don’t have it available. I was fine with that and simply asked to be refunded. The guy on the phone insistent that he can’t refund me and was pushing me to order another entree. I wasn’t interested, so told him that it’s fine and I will simply ask delivery company to refund me. Then all of the sudden he remembered that he can cancel an item on an order. Bottomline – mediocre food, questionable hygiene, and hustling. Maybe the dining-in experience is very different, but personally I would avoid this restaurant in the future.

Went to the restaurant yesterday with my family and was greatly disappointed by the service. The waitress was unhappy with no smile and answering as if you owed her something. Very poor customer service. The food is good, no comment about it. Please be careful when you go that they charge an 18% fee (stating that this is because you spend more than 100 dollars on your food) and then you are expected to give tips! They will not inform you about this from the beginning and I don't think they have it written anywhere! Bring your own bottles of water, no tap water provided so you have to buy their water! Unfortunately this was the first and the last time going to this place! Dear management team, please take some attitude regarding this! Hope to hear back from you with what action was taken!

This restaurant has an owner with the worst attitude, to say the least. I was asked to eat outside on a chilling evening on Easter because I have a service dog, and according to this woman, people in the restaurant complained. I have a service dog for a reason of a health condition and almost end up in the hospital as a result of this encounter. I'm never going to set foot to this horrible establishment as long as this terrible person is there. I should have better listen to my Romanian friends who warned me multiple times not to go. Now, I pay the price with my health and a very stiff bill as a result of an overly priced menu with average food. If I'd be you, I'd stay away from this place unless you want a terrible restaurant experience.
