Mr. Dunderbak’s is more than just a restaurant it’s a time capsule of authentic German heritage and flavor. From the first bite to the last sip, every dish carries the same old-world quality and attention to detail that made their original University Square Mall location such a Tampa landmark. The sausages, the sauerkraut, the fresh-baked pretzels, and that unmistakable aroma of imported beer and grilled goodness instantly brought me back to my childhood. The staff are friendly, the portions are generous, and the atmosphere feels like stepping into a cozy Bavarian tavern. It’s rare to find a place that stays true to its roots while still evolving with the times. Mr. Dunderbak’s continues to do just that serving up memories as rich as the flavors on every plate. If you grew up in Tampa and remember the old location, you owe it to yourself to relive that experience again. A truly authentic gem that stands the test of time.
This is another restaurant in our neighborhood that we frequent, its German cuisine and beer. Living in Germany for 8 years and having a German mom we are always looking for German places to eat. Dunderbak’s has a beer haus feel and decor, they have all kinds of things to see and buy there. You can buy beer, souvenirs, cookies, food products and this time of the year Christmas cookies and candy. Our daughter was visiting so we took her for dinner. We started with a big pretzel and my wife had a small Oktoberfest beer. For our meals we had a jaeger schnitzel and a sour cream schnitzel both with spatzle, one with pomme fritz and the other with German potato salad. The staff was nice and professional and it felt like we were in Germany. Since their portions are huge we shared two entrees and didn’t finish them. If you like German food and beer we recommend Dunderbaks!
This place is incredible! We started off with the cheese board well worth it, the chive sour cream spread to the ginger mango white stilton amazing five different cheeses. We follow the lineup with Spätzle and a Leberkäse sandwich with an add on of Nuremberg sausage. The mustards oh my god the jalapeño, cranberry and the house mustard a must try. All washed down with a few different styles of beers from the bar. Everything came out in great timing and was such enjoyable.
Came here for lunch and had a good time! Was abit difficult getting a table but worth the wait. Our food was fresh and delicious, they had a great beer selection too!
Food is always good and the atmosphere is amazing. Feels like you're really in Germany. They have a deli case and offer a variety of chocolates and gummies plus various groceries like seasonings and pudding mixes. You can buy bottles of wine and beer too. They even had trvia night while we were eating. It was so much fun.
There is celebrated history for my family aligning with German culture as my oldest daughter was born in Bavarian Germany. So naturally, we try our best to find the local German cuisine and festivities everywhere that we travel and live. Luckily for us, we discovered Mr. Dunderbak's, which wasn't incredibly too far from Lutz. We came mid-afternoon on a Sunday and the parking lot was full - fortunately, we were able to find some spots without waiting too long. As it was the end of September, Mr. Dunderbak's also hosted some Oktoberfest observations and festivities. This meant a bit of a wait for our family of four to be seated inside, but it was worth it! As you walk up to the restaurant, you are greeted with the unique Bavarian-esque calligraphy of its name in bold, golden hue. There was still outdoor seating available when we went in the form of tables and benches that situated in the parking spaces in front of the venue. Approaching the entrance, you will encounter a set of oaken doors that set the stage for your welcome. The doors then open up to a short corridor that which is adorned with wall hangings and lined with cases of beer along its walls, while the incandescent lighting contribute to the tone and ambiance of the restaurant before opening up to the immersive dining space. Immediately, we were reminded of our time spent living in Germany, as well as our travels to Austria. The noise-level was definitely suited for the space and environment that you find at a Biergarten. While the lighting was somewhat dim, the atmosphere was lively and vibrant which didn't rely on the light musical faire playing in the backdrop. There was a playful arrangement of seating areas - from biergarten benches and tables to formal tables with even a dining table under a gazebo centered in the dining space - making Mr. Dunderbak's even more festive. Flanking either side of the main dining space were two smaller rooms, with a full bar. What makes Mr. Dunderbak's even more unique is the mini-store that lines around the main dining space, along with a fully operational deli, offering an assortment of German meats/sausages and groceries (comparable to the Cracker Barrel concept, but better and without the negative media). As for the food, we definitely were able to satisfy our German-cuisine cravings. The menu was rather robust offering a variety of schnitzels and wursts (yes, they have currywurst), while offering a unique American flare with their other menu items. While I did not get any beer to accompany my meal, my wife ordered a Radler - and a grapefruit one at that - which arguably made her day. The jagerschnitzel, sauerkraut, and potato salad were solid, while the nurnberger (wursts) and spatzle were a hit with my kids. Overall, we had a great experience at Mr. Dunderbak's and will definitely be back again. This is a great place to go with groups and to simply enjoy company! Prost!
Mr. Dunderbak’s is a hidden gem that transports you straight to a cozy German beer hall the moment you walk in. From the warm wood-paneled interior to the long communal tables and shelves stocked with European goodies, the atmosphere is both authentic and inviting. The food? Outstanding. I had the Jägerschnitzel and it was cooked to perfection—crispy, flavorful, and generously portioned. Their selection of craft and imported beers is unmatched, with over 400 bottles and drafts to choose from. If you’re a beer lover, this place is paradise. Service was friendly and relaxed, and the staff seemed genuinely passionate about the menu and the experience. Bonus points for the live music nights and the adjacent market where you can grab German snacks and ingredients to take home. Whether you’re craving schnitzel, sausage, or just a great pint in a lively setting, Mr. Dunderbak’s delivers. I’ll definitely be back
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Stars… and honestly, I’d give it more if I could If we’re anywhere near Tampa, stopping at Mr. Dunderbak's Restaurant and Brewery on Bruce B. Downs is a must. It’s not even a question—it’s a tradition. James, Melea, Kelly (rookie visit), and I had another absolutely incredible dinner, and this place just hits every time (missing Jon, Rebecca, Lila and Corn). The sour cream schnitzel? Unreal. Crispy, flavorful, comfort food at its finest. The pierogies are the kind that make you slow down and actually enjoy every bite. And the pretzel… I mean COME ON 🤤 — it’s AMAZING. Warm, soft, perfectly baked, and impossible not to fight over. And let’s talk about the beer 🍺 Because wow. A fantastic selection, brewed right, and the perfect complement to everything on the table. Great food. Great beer. Great memories. This is one of those places that never lets you down and always leaves you saying, “Yep… that was worth it.” If you haven’t been—go. If you have been—you already know.
Phenomenal restaurant. Real old style German food prepared perfectly. Absolutely visit and very soon they will carry... Shark Tooth Vodka!
My party of 4 had a great time here, we even got to sit at the gazebo table. Our server Olivia was so lovely, brought our food out timely, and made our time here spectacular!!
The atmosphere was amazing with live music, super friendly service. Our server, Jose was super helpful with suggestions! The authentic German food… To die for, it was so amazing, definitely worth giving this place a try if you’ve never tried it. The beer was superb!! Also recommendations from the server, they sell 4 & 6 packs & growlers! My man and I were first timers and will definitely be back. I’m in absolute love 😍🤤
This was the cutest German place I've gone to by far, there was a German man playing the 🪗 accordian in German and it really set the tone. Their curry sausages were phenomenal and the veal schnitzel was fantastic. This definitely was a great experience to Try German food and I cannot wait to go back!
Amazing German food and of course a great beer. Selection service was amazing and having the owner nearby and making sure everything is satisfactory was wonderful.
Who knew you could order lunch at Dunderbacks?! We’ve been here many times for dinner and it’s always great. They serve authentic German food and a huge beer list. We went for lunch on a Thursday and they were busy but not crowded. Food, beer, and service were all great as usual. Check out the back of the menu sometime, you’ll thank me. In addition to their regular menu they offer about a dozen special sandwiches or you can make your own from the deli. Highly recommend stopping for lunch
Ordered the Black Forest cake for my birthday..wow, it's absolute perfection! I've tried to find a Bavarian style cake this close to the original I had in the 80's..and now I found it!
Amazing food and good portion sizes. Unique and fun atmosphere! 320 types of beer available for purchase.
Authentic German beer house! Sit at the bar and you can find at least 33 beers on tap. I ordered the Yeager schnitzel mushroom gravy, warm German potato salad and a rattler which is a fruit beer. Lucky for me I came early enough to get the first tap on the keg! My husband always goes for a light wheat beer. The accordion player has been there for 20 years, he is delightful. I have a European background so I’m excited to go there often. They have cookies, cakes and candies for my childhood as well as many beers from my youth. The little ladybugs pictured are made of marzipan. I have several favorites and each time I do bring them home. Service is always great. Don’t forget to visit the beer room where you can look through all the authentic beers in bottles for purchase. Usually we sit inside, but there is outdoor seating as well.
Dunderbak’s has been a local staple for years and there are reasons for that: - Beer. But not just beer— beer in giant glass steins. - Some of the best German/Austrian dinner offerings. You can get seven variations of schnitzel here, and that’s not even a quarter of their menu. There’s so much to choose from. - The vibes here are nostalgic and welcoming. Yes, the interior is cheesy to some. But I happen to love cheese, so pile it on. To me, the German decor and density in the room makes this feel like a place where you can always find a friend or have quality time with the ones you came with. - And so you don’t leave empty handed, they have all sorts of imported candies, cookies, and culinary accoutrements available for purchase. Something I’d like to note here, because I see it as a common complaint: This place gets very busy— even parking, so keep that in mind. And when it gets busy you may have to wait for your server. I suggest that this is the sort of place you’ll want to come to when you have plenty of time to sit and enjoy your meal & beverages. Also, if you are not a social person, this place will not be for you. The open seating and long tables are inherently designed to encourage interaction. It’s abuzz with joviality, music, and casual banter. I personally love the atmosphere but I know this is not the case for everyone. That being said, please come and have a great time, be patient with your servers, and enjoy the live music. It’s like Oktoberfest every day!

Looking for a place with great German food and a German restaurant vibe? You found it. Food was delicious and some of the best German food I’ve had outside of Germany
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ OMG! I haven’t visited since they were in the University Mall. Why? I have no clue but we will be back way more frequent. Visited on a Sat and it was FANTASTIC! Decor is wonderful, service was impeccable & the food was AMAZING! After we ate, we did some shopping for some sweets. They have so much to choose from! Beer cheese soup, pierogies & the New Yorker were amazing. The food was even better than I remember. Jared was in our server who was fantastic. Parking can be tight so plan ahead. We parked right in front with no issue during our visit.
My mom is from Germany so we always search for these types of places and this one is wonderful. The food is well priced and tastes sooooo good. The schnitzel is just mmm so yummy. Our waiter was super nice too :)
We absolutely love this place! The atmosphere is always welcoming and fun, and there’s usually a great crowd when we go in. The service is consistently excellent—friendly, attentive, and makes you feel right at home. The little German shop inside is such a great touch too, and we always find something good in there. Most importantly, the food is amazing every time… we never leave disappointed! Highly recommend if you’re craving great German food and a great vibe. 😋🇩🇪
Excellent Food & Services. Best German Sandwiches in Tampa Bay Area. Came in and was greeted with the upmost hospitality. Order a Das Matterhorn & Chocolate German Cake. Met the Owner James. Was very Hospitable & Welcoming. Highly Recommended!! Good was Fresh & Delicious. 10 STARS⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have been coming here to Dunderbaks for years and am consistently impressed by the quality of service me and my family receive here. Tonight was no exception. The hostess was very friendly and attentive to our needs, the server was very personable and gave perfect beer recommendations and the food was above and beyond all expectations. The jaegerschitzel and spatzle was absolutely scrumptious. I could not recommend this place more highly. Dunderbaks is a one-of-a-kind experience of German culture and cuisine at its finest; you will not find a warmer or more capably run German restaurant in the Tampa Bay area. Prost! 🍻

The food was good, overall fairly authentic, and the best German food option in the area that I've found so far. However, I felt like it was good, but it wasn't great. Coming from a strong German heritage and area that had an abundance of German restaurants, culture, and community, I just felt a bit underwhelmed. The restaurant itself felt cluttered, too tightly packed together, and was very loud because there isn't enough space between you and the other diners. The seating was not comfortable at all. The market/ dining is a cute idea, but you have to practically be at other people's tables to look at the items because they are along the walls of the dining area, which feels intrusive. Maybe move the market to another location and focus on making the dining experience a little more pleasant.
