6/24/23- I just had to come and add to my original review. We have been visiting Hooked since they opened and to this day have yet to find a better place to get oysters. They are always clean, cold and perfectly shucked. This visit we finally tried the paella, and I can tell why it is one of the menu items that stays whenever the menu is changed. The rice was so delicious, very well seasoned with such fresh seafood. They have an option to add the house made chicken sausage, you’re going to want to add the chicken sausage. It was amazing, just the right amount of heat and juicy consistency, not dry. The scallops were seared perfectly, served over creamy cauliflower mash with a chorizo crumble and a hint of lemon. The dessert was an absolute WINNER, mixed berries macerated with basil on a warm honey biscuit with the most amazing lemon curd cream. I love when a dessert is not overly sweet and this one hit all the marks of a perfect dessert. Our server, Tori was such a gem, happy, welcoming and really added to our already fabulous dining experience. 1st Review: Hooked hands down has the best oysters in the capital district. They’re selection of delicious cold water oysters is abundant, the staff is extremely knowledgeable and willing to help in your section process, but we just try them all. The oysters are kept ice cold, they’re clean and shucked properly to not leave shell shards or lose any of the delicious brine that makes oysters so addicting. They also offer fresh seafood and delicious fish tacos. They recently started serving beer and wine.
The quality and deliciousness of this food far surpass anything you might expect. This is truly a hidden gem 5 star eating experience. With reasonable prices it maintains a menu that you might only find in a very high end district or like a posh resort restaurant. My wife and I shared a delicious and extremely reasonably priced lunch sandwich and opted for the fish meatballs and seafood pasta dish. The 2 shared between us was more than enough food. The portions were right on, the presentation was spectacular and the taste with its garnish of microgreens was out of this world! This is a local must try 5 stars all the way!
I have never been disappointed here. The seafood department is hands down the best in the area. The tacos, bowls and fish and chips are wonderful. The owners are kind, accommodating and attentive. Am so happy to see the expansion and I wish Katie and Luke much success in their new venue.
Seriously awesome. A bar and a fish monger with the option to dine. Best oyster selection, price, and educated servers. Killer burger…. I know it’s a fish joint but that burger OMG.. Husband and wife team of ball busting hard working people who just want to make you happy. What more could you ask for. Thank you owners and staff. Your killing it. So appreciate your contribution to the 518.
Best food I've had in a while. The seafood was fresh and delicious. The salad was also awesome. My only disappointment is that I didn't discover this place sooner. The staff and owner were very friendly and helpful. Also, knowledgeable in food allergies. I definitely recommend!
Best oysters in the area for appetizer then you get warm lobster bun Enjoy
Ordered the crispy fish sandwich. One of the best I’ve ever had. Service was above and beyond. And the oysters were on a different level. Will be back 100%, also recommend to anyone in the area. This place is dynamite!!
We were passing through the area and I was craving a lobster roll, so I googled restaurants in the area that had them on the menu and found this gem. What an amazing place! Fantastic service and incredible food. The warm lobster roll was delicious, and the bun was so buttery. The crab cakes and fish and chips were incredible too, as well as the local beer and wine selection. Highly recommend!
What a hidden gem! With a vibe and seafood quality it feels like you’re dining at a spot on the Boston harbor. The hot lobster roll and fish tacos were delicious. Calamari was perfectly fried. We will definitely be back. The only thing I’d say is that it would be nice to have cocktail sauce or a spicy mayo for the calamari as it comes with a marinara, and the bun for the lobster roll is pretty dense/thick. Definitely wouldn’t stop me from getting these two items again though!
Here for lunch with a friend. Nice atmosphere…part fish market part restaurant. Had a cup of fish chowder, equivalent to a Manhattan clam but with rice and more veggies. I got a quart to go. My fault for not asking the price but surprisingly is was $26….the price of two bowls. Thought it would be less expensive and discounted in “quantity”. Lunch for both of us was the grilled fish sandwich. Today’s catch was grilled wahoo which was great. The fish was a bit dry but wahoo tends to be. A nice dressing on the sandwich with veggies and pickles on baguette. Thanks for subbing a salad for fries! Will be back. Delicious and at $16 the fish sandwich was not outrageous given the freshness and quality.
I had to write this review! Hooked is absolutely off the hook, so delicious every time I come. Best seafood selection and so fresh! The staff is so knowledgeable and great! 10 Stars!! Amazing place..... Justina our waitress was so sweet, helpful and extremely responsive.
10/10. I took one of my Italian vendors here a few months back, and the waitress was incredibly helpful and courteous. The food is dynamite & the service is excellent. What more could you ask for in a restaurant? I always go with the scallops, and have never been disappointed. Recommend highly to those looking for a new place to eat!
Would eat here everyday if I didn’t need to make rent. They redefine poke bowls. Fried food somehow tastes light. Fresh & delicious. Could Demolish 10 Pisco Sours if I wasn’t such a lightweight. The only place I take my city friends who have crazy high standards.

This was our first time at Hooked this evening and we absolutely loved it! We sat at the bar and the service was fantastic, the people behind the bar / oyster bar were so easy to talk to. They were super knowledgeable on their seafood and recommendations. My husband and I are just getting into seafood so figured to check it out. We enjoyed the charred octopus on a whim which was incredible. The mussels and stuffed sole special was to die for. We live so close, we definitely want to come back soon! The market was just as impressive. Thank you for a wonderful date night out, Hooked. 😁
My daughter and I came here for a much needed night out and we were apprehensive about choosing a place we haven't eaten at before. We walked in and immediately I felt the vibe and it was great, welcoming, and comfortable. We sat and our waitress was amazing we noticed that for all we were ordering she didn't have a pad or pen. We were Impressed. she was knowledgeable and so down to earth, very professional. We ordered oysters (three types), cajun shrimp w/cream sauce, and crab cakes, and margaritas, Everything was DELISH. Everything fresh (small menu). I asked our waitress what her name was and we found out that she is the owner (Katie). Love her. Bottom line you want to eat here. I recommend a hundred times. We will definitely be back and so will you. Cheers to you Katie. Much love sis.
For transparency, we are regulars at Hooked. We come 3-4 times per month, and they never fail to impress or excite us. For example, we are octopus snobs, and on our most recent visit, we shared the Charred Octopus appatizer. It was excellent! Fresh, tender, seasoned and cooked perfectly, which is difficult to do with Octopus. The Tiramisu dessert special was very tasty. In general, they have the best oysters in the Capital District. Always fresh and tasty. They have the best Lobster Roll west of Maine
From the moment we walked in treated like family! Apps, entrees and desserts all amazing. Desserts all homemade! Our table had several apps shared. Entrees for us Ahi Tuna, Winter Halibut, Fish Tacos and a Lobster Roll. One land Lubber had the burger with crispy onions and some of the best fries I ever had. And. THE OYSTERS! We did the Shuckers Platter. AMAZING! Waitstaff was awesome. Laid back casual comfortable atmosphere with soft perfect dining lighting. This place will be a regular stop for us as well as picking up fresh fish to go for home cooking.
Went there for the first time, and will return. I got to have Wellfleet oysters for the first time since the Cape, and they were luscious. (I hadn’t had good raw oysters since Reel Seafood closed.) Enjoyed a perfectly grilled piece of swordfish and salad. The waitstaff is very personable and attentive, despite how busy they were. As another reviewer noted, the wine pour was on the smaller side, and the prices were a bit more than some places for lunch but that seems like the trend these days. The experience and quality will still bring me back.
Hooked on Hooked? Yes I am… I usually don’t get to excited about sea food restaurants in non-coastal cities but my fellow Yelpers led me down the right path, once again, to Hooked. Walking in and seeing the selection of fresh fish let’s you know they are open to play and play hard. We were quickly seated but the poor waitress was the only one working the entire sitting area. She was amazing and kept smiling but service was a little delayed because of this. I was with family so we were content sitting and talking. We ordered a dozed raw oysters for the table as an app. Al they have a very nice selection of oysters mostly harvested from Maine or PEI. Two of the best places to get oysters in my opinion. For my entree, I had the paella and man was it good! Piping hot with and explosion of flavorful rice, mussels, scallops and shrimp. It was a hearty helping too. After all of this we polished off lunch with come cookies and ice cream. To this day I cannot figure out how they stuffed so much chocolate into those cookies. A must visit for all!
We've been to Hooked twice now and the food has been great each time. The first time we were advised of a 40 minute wait (they do not take reservations) but we were seated in 25. The second time, also a Friday evening at the same time, we were immediately seated. The location is unassuming from the road but the ambiance inside is cozy. The tables for diners allow for relaxed meals while the raw bar and retail fish counter add an elevated level of activity. Dishes are delivered by various people as they are become ready. Check the menu ahead of time on line - while the meals we've had have all been great, make sure there are acceptable options for any that prefer something other than seafood. The wine selection is good. The nightly specials are extensive. Hooked will be a regular stop for us.
Fresh, Delicious! First time here. The place is immaculate. We got their fish fry. That jicama coleslaw was to die for! The giant fries: crispy outside & tender inside. Great service & the prices reflect their standards. We grabbed some fresh red grouper for home. Needless to say we’ll be back. Highly recommended.
Excellent food, definitely some of the best fish I’ve had in my travels. Also, the skillet cookie is to DIE for. Very attentive and friendly service, definitely recommend!
The best fish and chips I've ever had. Big piece of fresh fish moist and flaky with very little breading. Killer fries. Super fresh oysters. Tasted the grilled fish sandwich also yum. Tiny bit of spice excellent bread. Highly recommend this place.
Great food and service. I love seafood and they deliver with many different varieties of seafood.
Kudos to the chef for blending such great flavors. The food was fresh, well thought out and bursting with flavor. We live in South Florida, and have some of the freshest seafood. Hooked restaurant seafood was not only fresh but it was layered with flavor. A must go
Phenomenal. What brought me in was the wide selection of fresh oysters twice a week. PEI, Ma, Rhode Island. What keeps me coming back is the freshest selection of fresh fish I've found in the area. The restaurant's menu is extensive covering both classics and unique offerings. Expensive? Yes but I'm worth it. Staff is great. Go. Enjoy.
Went for the first time last Saturday. The staff were amazing and food came out quickly. They went above and beyond accomodating a party of 6 and they were very friendly. Would come back just for the service!
Hands down the best fresh seafood in the Capitol District. I’ve been a customer since they opened and wouldn’t buy fish or shellfish anywhere else in the area. Its always immaculately clean and the staff is friendly, professional and knowledgeable.
It’s a very nice place, clean and with a kind mom and pop feeling. We ate good, food was really good and tasty. I recommend fish and chips and shrimp scampi. Really good. Portions are decent, not too big not too small. Atmosphere is okay, a bit loud because there are no partitions and you’re like 3 feet away from other people. Lighting above the tables is a bit dim had to turn on the flashlight on my phone to read the menu. Maybe that can be improved with a lamp or light just above the center or each table, maybe not. I’m not sure. After that you want some dim lights.
Ashley and Justina were fantastic servers!! They were attentive and so pleasant. The food was amazing.
Absolutely phenomenal. Was really blown away. Had oysters and the fish special which was halibut and my mother had the fish and chips. They normally prepare the fish and chips with cod but they were happy to substitute haddock for her. Everything was absolutely delicious. Papo was tending the bar and the service was terrific and he was friendly and knowledgeable. Will absolutely be coming back. Update: Have been back many times, always great food and great service. Has become a go to for me
Food is always excellent. Two of us had the fish and chips, and one had the special of the day. We also had the crab cake appetizer. Everything was delicious. Expect to wait on Fridays. Wish the place was a little larger with more seating, so the wait is shorter.
The best seafood in the capital region. I eat here very frequently because the fish is so fresh and the dishes are so unique and flavorful. My family and I have tried a lot of dishes on the menu and you can’t go wrong. The service is fantastic and the employees are so kind. The springtime bowl special is to die for and must if you want to expand your pallet. Both the fish and chips and calamari salad are outstanding. If you like oysters, this is the place. They have a wide variety that are super fresh. Great place for lunch and dinner! The owners are fantastic! Support local businesses!
One of my favorite places to eat while visiting Albany. I had the grilled swordfish on the harvest salad. Harvest style is mixed greens, butternut squash, spicy pepitas, candied walnuts, goat cheese, and maple viniagrette. Simply amazing and priced just right. The swordfish was amazing, tender, moist, and fresh. It was so good I ate the entire fillet before touching my salad. If you are in the area and you want fresh seafood, give Hooked a shot and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Lobster roll for myself, crispy fish sandwich for my adult daughter who does not love seafood like I do. Both lunches were nicely plated, and tasted as good as they looked! The bowls of fries we each received were hot, crispy, and tasty. Coffee was fresh and hot. Delicious all around! Definitely going back. Cost? $75 total. It’s not a fast food joint. It’s quality, it’s local. Like I said, going back!
After driving by this place hundreds of times, I finally decided to stop in. We will back over and over again! The seafood pasta had more seafood than pasta, and the cream sauce was light and flavorful. Absolutely delicious. The poke bowl was full of flavor, so much better than many poke bowls you’ll find just anywhere. The oysters were fresh and delicious. The service was phenomenal. Everyone was friendly, on top of it, and clearly working very hard without letting us feel it. I also got the white sangria, which was great! We had so much fun just being there and enjoying the atmosphere and the food. Such a pleasant surprise and a somewhat hidden gem! Definitely recommend.
We originally came here to try their raw fish, planning on taking it home to cook. We noticed they actually have tables and a full menu as well. We sat for lunch one day and my wife and I were blown away with how fresh and tasty the menu was. My wife insisted we try their raw bar, with a wide selection of oysters. I've never been much of an oyster person, but once we tried them, I was (sorry for the pun) hooked. We come back regularly now and make it a point to have their oysters. Recently, we were in Atlantic City, staying at a 5 star hotel. We tried the oysters there since we've been on a kick. I can say that hands down, the oysters at Hooked are considerably better. Best fish market and restaurant in the Capital District. Definitely make it a point to visit here!
Cannot wait to go back. Definitely a new go-to. Super FRESH seafood! Delicious cocktails! Staff was very knowledgeable about the menu and suggested clams & oysters. Also had the warm lobster roll...incredible
This is one of my favorite places to go in the 518, especially for seafood. Everything they offer here is fresh off the boat as they drive to Boston daily picking up orders (you can make one yourself as well). Both the menu and ambiance they create here are tantalizing. The service is top notch, always friendly, knowledgeable and very accommodating. I often find myself drifting towards the oyster bar 🦪 to order a half dozen or so. They shuck them right infront of you which is an art in and of itself! This is the only restaurant I would eat fresh shucked oysters at in the capital region! They also offer tons of meals ready to cook/reheat and enjoy at home. My go-to here is the house fish and chips that's second to none. It comes golden fried to perfection without an over abundance of batter (like those other places) leaving the sweet flakey fish as the ⭐️of the show. Of course last but not least, the thick cut perfectly done french fries accompanied by a fresh coleslaw that reminds me of mommas! We can't forget about the cocktails/mocktails🍸 either. Hooked is most definitely a can't miss spot in the 518 for both lunch & dinner but don't just take my word for it!
Christmas was not shaping up at all well…all the cooks in the family were very much under the weather. So…once again…we counted in the Hooked team to save the day. We ordered absolutely wonderful lobster Mac and cheese, perfect scallops and oh so fresh halibut for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (we are not meat eaters, so seafood is always top of our charts.) I was definable not hitting on all of my cylinders and counted on the patience and kindness of Kate and Brian to make sure the order hit…and hit only once! Hooked truly saved our Christmas from the culinary perspective and the friendship and professionalism was another key ingredient. I am headed back today to nail New Year’s Eve.
Stopped in for lunch on a weekend. The staff were all very friendly. The fish is very, very fresh. Had never had Rhode Island Clam Chowder before. I like it, a lot. The clam flavor is forefront. The French Onion Soup is a served a little differently, with the toasted bread and cheese only in the middle, but I liked it. It let The soup cool down enough to eat it without burning your tongue. The grilled fish sandwich was good too. I ordered it without the aoli, and asked for cocktail sauce on the side.
This is one of the best places in the Albany area! Absolutely killer selection of beverages, fish, and raw bar. The menu changes up enough to keep things fresh, ironically one of my favorites has been their grilled chicken sandwich. Every time we visit it always delivers!
Excellent seafood with not ordinary prep. Fresh oysters from the oyster bar. Surprisingly nice wine list though short. Love the crab cakes! Could go crazy eating oysters but for the cost. A bit pricey but worth it me. Staff are fantastic.
Was here recently with a small group. We loved the food! My only note is that maybe offer sauces or an aioli on the side as a suggestion. While I loved the swordfish I got, a couple other people thought that their fish was perfectly cooked but needed more seasoning. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere is cosy. It gets busy fast, and the parking is a tiny bit cramped, so if you don't want to circle around the lot, I'd suggest parking at the strip mall next door or at Galleria right across Route 7.
Very few places live up to the reviews and pictures, this place exceeds them. We are traveling to Albany from Boston for the NCAA tournament, and found this place based on reviews. The creativity of the menu, the flavors, the freshness, the cocktails, the service- all five stars. Every dish we got- the cauliflower, the octopus, the scallops and the tuna- each one 5 stars. The little details like the fried capers, the crunch of a chickpea, the seared buttery edge of the scallop- all meld perfectly. And Beth was the sweetest, attentive with great recommendations. Worth the drive from Albany! (And Boston)
Sometimes Google Maps needs a 6th ⭐... This place deserves a 6th star. I enjoyed a generous cup of Seafood soup that included clam, shrimp and squid with hominy, tomato and radish with a subtle broth with just the right touch of acidity. From there I dove into their raw oysters. Great selection! The Recompense oyster from main has been one of the best I have had. I finished my meal with a light vinegrett salad that was only topped by a massive lobster roll that was fresh and stuffed into a large slice of buttery bread that simply made it! It was a pleasure to have Jason for our server. Friendly, knowledgeable and prompt! I'll be back again soon and you'd be cool to sleep on this place if you enjoy seafood.
Went here with my girlfriends for the first time on Saturday. They don’t take reservations but you can call ahead 15-20mins in advance and put your name on a wait list. The staff were really nice. The food was great. We started off with the crab dip, harissa cauliflower and the mushroom bruschetta. They did not disappoint but I think my favorite was the hot crab dip. I got one of the best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time as my dinner. The fried haddock had a light crispy coating. It wasn’t greasy at all. The fries were so nice nicely seasoned and the dips of cocktail sauce, tartar sauce were really good as well. My friends got the fish and shrimp burger and the scallops. I tried both of their dishes and they were also very tasty. The scallops were cooked perfectly, with a nice sear but still very soft. Overall very pleasantly surprised. Great casual spot for dining with high quality food. Cheers!
We called ahead tonsee if we needed reservations, and they said that they would place our name on the wait list. When we arrived, a table was just being cleaned off, and we were seated. There are about 25 seats, maybe less. There is also bar seating of 4-5. Our waitress was ready to take our drink order, and after asking a few questions, we ordered a pint and a bacon bourbon cocktail. We were able to have a conversation without hassle. The menu font was a bit small, and I wish they could have been more readable. We ordered the 6 fresh oysters, Harissa fried cauliflower, jerk mahi mahi, and paella. The harissa was heavy with cumin. Everything was perfectly seasoned. The bill came to around 120 without tip. They had dessert but decided to skip for now. The tiramisu was vanilla bean flavored. When we left the restaurant it was pitch dark, there were no lights on. We went back inside to let them know, and they turned them on, as they were on a timer and hadent adjusted them yet.
I'm delighted to share my experience at Hooked Seafood. Their incredible seafood offerings left me speechless. From succulent shrimp to perfectly grilled fish, every bite was a taste of the ocean's finest. The freshness of their ingredients was evident in every dish, making it a true seafood lover's paradise. But it wasn't just the food that impressed me; their service was exceptional as well. The staff went above and beyond to ensure a memorable dining experience. Attentive and friendly, they made us feel right at home. And let's not forget about the desserts! Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, the desserts proved me wrong. They were truly to die for, providing a sweet ending to an already remarkable meal. In conclusion, Hooked Seafood not only offers incredible seafood that's bursting with freshness, but also provides top-notch service that enhances the overall dining experience. If you're a seafood enthusiast looking for an unforgettable meal, this is the place to be.
Took husband to lunch a little early for Father's Day. He ordered the fried fish and chips- which also came with jicama slaw. I ordered the fish tacos- which came with homemade tortilla chips and salsa. For an app we ordered 12 oysters from the raw bar with a vinegar minuate sauce and hot sauce on the side. Everything was very fresh, very good, and there were many items on the menu that I wanted to try.
Nice sit down very fresh seafood restaurant (with non-seafood choices) My companion and I chose an array of small plates that were of a wonderful variety. They were very busy with not too long a wait. The seating is limited and also has a raw bar. Our server was kind and attentive without being intrusive at all. The quality of the seafood was the best that I have had in the Capital Region. It was in a smaller location that was part of the Rte 7 Food Court. I look forward to taking friends back here soon!
One of my wife's Japanese friends recommended this place (the Japanese are very fussy about their seafood), so we tried it - and we have been back several times. The food is excellent. Prices are quite reasonable. Atmosphere is a bit sterile and characterless, but the food more than makes up for that. And if you are up for a chuckle, check the signs on the restroom doors!
Made us feel like we were on the Cape. This was our first visit. We'll certainly make it one of our go-tos. Not your typical fish sandwiches, which is a nice treat. Felt bad for our Waiter who seemed to be the only wait staff during lunch hours. He did his best and was friendly and polite. Maybe add an extra person to help him out. Overall, we are now hooked on Hooked.
I'm giving 4 stars because the oysters were awesome. Had the VERY expensive tiny lobster roll. Have had better! It was stringy and watery. My cousin had the fried fish sandwich and said it was great. Pleasant waitstaff.
Food and service were good but the batter on my fish was more soggy than crispy. Kind of a diner atmosphere.
I always get the crispy fish sandwich, because it used to be the best choice on the menu. This time, much smaller piece of fish, way less tasty sauce (no spice and just lemon mayo, really) on the sandwich, and price has gone up. I know a lot of this is the economy and everything just being more expensive on late stage capitalism... but the flavor is greatly missed.
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Hooked, I ordered the fish and chips, which were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The batter was light and crispy, and the fish was flaky and moist. I also tried the Asian shrimp and fish burger, which was equally delicious. The burger was juicy and flavorful, and the Asian sauce added a nice kick. For an appetizer, I ordered the swordfish skewer, which was grilled to perfection. The swordfish was tender and flavorful, and the accompanying dipping sauce was delicious. I also ordered a dozen raw oysters from the bar, which were fresh and tasty. The drinks were also reasonably priced, and the service was friendly and attentive. The place wasn't that busy when I went, so the wait was very short. Parking is available outside, and the location was very clean. Overall, I had a great experience at Hooked and would definitely recommend it to others. Rating: 8/10
Had dinner there tonight with my boyfriend. The food was good and wait staff very friendly . The portions were a bit small and the food prices were high. Our main problem was the wine pour. If your going to charge $12.00 for a glass of house wine in a very casual, no atmosphere environment, at least give a respectable pour. My BF and I go out quite a bit to restaurants and bars and this was a very minimal pour. They can afford to be a bit more generous for what they charge. Although the food was good and the experience was pleasant, we will probably not be going back there again.
Small with just average food. There’s six of us in a group and still have to wait about 30 mins. or longer after making a reservation although she said they don’t take reservations she did anyway. Gave enough warning. Friendly staff. Parking is also small.
Starting to compromise in taste and quality. Was looking forward to the Crab and Cod Bisque. Disappointed with the grossly overabundance of Celery. Way toooo much that there is no balance. When you've started using filler you've made a turn for the worse. Lobster Roll is best with no Celery. When I go there I want to treat myself to something good and not care about the price but when it's filler you're wasting my time and money.
My friend and I were very excited to have the daily special which was linguini with white clam sauce. The dish was tasty but very very skimpy. Lots of bread served with the dish but didn’t make up for the small Amount of the clams, sauce and pasta for the price.. A small salad would have been nice.
Traveling from NYC... Stopped in for a quick bite to go, ordered fish n chips and the hushpuppies! The hushpuppies were a 10/10!! Fish n chips lacked seasoning, so I have to say it was a 6/10 and that's being generous. I love when the fish is seasoned before being dipped into the batter!!!
Certain bites here were delicious: the hush puppies with the hot honey, and the pickled mushrooms served with the tuna were great. The service was good and the food came out of the kitchen quickly, even with a mostly full dining room and bar. The positives, however, end there. The swordfish tasted like someone looked up what blackening was, but had never tried the technique before. It was bitter, dry, and lacking salt in such a pronounced way that it was difficult to eat. The side salad was a relief on the plate only in the sense that I could take a break from eating the fish. The cocktail meant to be infused with a rhubarb and raspberry jam, was soda water and gin with some unappetizing detritus floating about. It exemplified the kind of laziness that made me say “how could they serve this?” several times during the meal.
I’m fed up with this place. At this point the food quality has gone down hill and I’m tired of driving back home with cold food. Half the time something is missing or I’m waiting 5 to 7 minutes for someone to just swipe the card so I can take my food home. Then there’s the parking lot which takes forever to get out of. Word of advice, don’t make pick up people wait.
Pictured is the $26 poke bowl. They did not have tuna and offered salmon, which was totally okay, but turned out to be probably some left over (chewy, stringy) left over cuts. The flavor was very much something you can make in your own kitchen in about 10 seconds... it's not bad at all, but there are a few local places offering the same or better quantity/quality bowl with the same or better location/ambiance/experience at a lower price point. The fries in the fish and chips were fine, perfectly fresh and crispy on the outside, but mealy and bland on the inside. The fried filet was very greasy and tasted like the fish has been sitting a few days... disappointing for a "market", if you are expecting something fresh. We did go during off hours on a Tuesday, so this might just be an issue of quality control and not their best presentation. Both beer pours were perfect, and the waitstaff are efficient and look to be tasked with other duties as well as minding the tables, at least during off hours. The bill is an additional 2.5% if you use credit, with the reason that the business charges what it does to "pay their waitstaff a living wage". If that is true, and the tip is pre-factored into the cost of each item, then the pricing of the menu makes a lot more sense.... but this is not mentioned anywhere, so I imagine the expectation is still to tip as usual. Bottom line: Hooked is a super cute place with okay food, but is crazy over-priced for what is offered, and everything about what we could see of the business presentation leans towards "stingy". We regret not going for our first time during "on" hours to better compare it to other places, but it would be a hard sell for us to return given the relatively high cost to low quality ratio of the meal.
I ordered the haddock tacos. They were very small and I expected a lot of flavor but unfortunately, they were very bland. So I asked for some tartar sauce and was surprised that I was charged $4.00 for it. If the tacos tasted like they were described, they wouldn’t have needed the tartar sauce. Disappointed.
Firstly, I want to say this is a very clean shop. No fishy smell at all. If I were to rate them on their cleanliness, they would get 5 stars. I got a piece of cod that was about $9. I asked her if they had fish fries. The woman who waited on me said we have fish and chips. I told her I didn't want the chip and was offered a salad instead. I just wanted the fish fries. Mind you there wasn't a menu in sight with the exception of a dink menu at the cashier station. So I ordered 3 fish & chips. I paid for my order, $74. plus an 18% tip. She told me it would be a couple of minutes. Mind you, I was the only customer in the store at 11:10 am. There were at least 5 people working that I saw. I waited and waited and waited, approx 10-15 mins, until one of the gentlemen asked me if there was anything else I needed. I told him I was waiting on my fish and chips. He then asked the woman who waited on me if she had taken an order. She said yes I'm about to make it. On my way out in the vestibule, there were to-go menus. I grabbed one. Come to find out there is a fish sandwich for $16. which is what I had asked for. My order was to go. When I got it home, all 3 of the fish & chips had 2 small pieces of way overcooked fish and actually pretty good fries. My fish was so overcooked that it was dry. I've never had dry fish. I do not recommend the $20. fish & chips. I cooked my cod which was very good. I will go back to the store for raw food, only because there is not any other fish market in the area, at least that I know about. I can tell you, if I had been able to pay after my experience, she would not have gotten a tip at all. I tip for service and mine was horrible.
Not impressed with the fish and chips for the price I paid. There wasn’t anything special about the fish. It was just simply good normal fried fish. Portion sucked: single fillet with a whole bunch of fries. Also, the blandest tartar sauce I’ve had in a long time. Not worth the 20 bucks. If I had opened the box before I left, I would’ve asked for my money back.
A business with promise, now faltering This place had the makings of something special. There aren’t many spots in the capitol region that offer fresh exotic fish and quality hardshell seafood, and when I first started coming here, both the service and the food were genuinely impressive. The option to take home fresh fish to prepare yourself was a standout, and dining in—while pricey—felt worthwhile. Unfortunately, that’s changed. The food served in-house has noticeably declined in quality, yet the prices remain steep. Case in point: two small fish tacos recently cost me $22. That kind of pricing might be forgivable if the experience matched it, but lately, it simply doesn’t. I still believe this place had strong potential. I just hope they find their way back before it’s too late.
I've been a regular for quite some time, visiting at least once a week often with clients due to the great service I usually receive. Unfortunately, my recent experience left much to be desired. Despite expressing concerns about the food, the manager failed to address our issues. While they attended to other tables, our concerns were disregarded. For instance, there was another table right next to us experiencing the same problem with the quality of the food. Although our waitress was very supportive by trying to resolve the issue but she was unable to do much without the manager’s support. In fact, the (New to me) manager not only went to that table to address the patron’s concerns, she also comp’d their bill! She never even bothered to approach us to address our concerns or even apologize about the issue at hand even thought we requested assistance from a manager. The only difference I could see was the other patrons were of a different race. As someone who spends an average of $100+ per visit at this establishment on a weekly basis and consistent quality service is of importance to me, this experience fell short of expectations and left a sour taste in our mouths LITERALLY.
This is our first time trying out hooked after hearing great things about it. I called ahead 2 weeks prior, spoke to a woman on the phone who stated they don’t take reservations, which is fine. But she said she would take our name down, which was great. This is a larger party because it was a birthday dinner- 7 of us plus a baby. We arrive at 5:20 and the hostess tells us it will be about a 10 minute wait and they were just waiting for a couple tables to clear. Great. 20 minutes pass and we are still waiting. She checks in and tells us they are on dessert now and should be clearing soon. Another 20 minutes go by and we check in again, hostess apologies and we wait another 10 minutes. Then a manager comes over and tells us that a different party of 8 was there before us and that they are giving them the table instead. Mind you, It’s a small waiting area and we’ve been there for almost an hour, we know who was there and who wasn’t waiting. Unfortunately for us the “other people” waiting must’ve known someone and we got snubbed a table. So after an hour we leave without food and now it’s 6:33 and a family of 7 and a baby are out a birthday dinner. Unfortunately for the restaurant we are a large family and will be telling our experience to others. It’s disappointing when you look forward to something for weeks and don’t get to celebrate together,
I'm not hooked. If you want to go there to purchase fresh fish and seafood to cook at home, then I would give this shop 5 stars. The fish looked fresh and the oysters were absolutely amazing. If you choose to dine in, prepare your palate for disappointment and your wallet emptied. We had the least expensive and most expensive meal on the menu and both were a disappointment. I've had fish and chips all over the country at some of the finest restauraunts and street fare. I've had good, I've had bad, but at hooked restauraunt it was bland and uninspired. The battering tasted of burnt fryer oil. The lobster risotto was flavorless. I don't anticipate adding salt to my risotto, but unfortunately had to add a significant amount of salt to make the meal a little more tolerable. I think hooked restauraunt can be absolutely amazing, giving the fresh food they provide. May need a little work on finding their groove.
