My family and I visited The Smith on a busy Sunday around 5 pm. Thankfully we had reservations, otherwise it may have been a bit of a wait. The atmosphere was lively, and the food was solid across the board. We ordered the calamari, kids cheeseburger, the Smith burger, and the braised short rib mafaldine. Everything was well prepared, with the short rib mafaldine standing out as rich and comforting. A nice touch was the fresh bread service and the option of house still or sparkling water. Our server was friendly, though service slowed at times due to the crowd. Overall, The Smith is a reliable choice for good food.
We enjoyed dinner here the other night, overall great experience! We ordered the Mac & cheese (5/5), braised short rib fusilli (4/5, not much short rib in the dish but taste was great), NY strip (3/5, fries were lacking but the steak was good), apple crumb pie (2/5, wasn't a favorite), and hot fudge sundae (5/5). I forgot our waiter's name (we came 11/11 around 8pm) but he was the best! Made great recommendations, was attentive, and friendly from start to finish.
This feels like the place to go for business dinners and celebration occasions, yet it's comfortable enough for friends to meet or a nice date night. The food is really good. It's not a huge menu, but what is served is really good. We had two vegetarians in our group and each person had something different, and our burger loving friend was super happy. My husband really loved the muscles...so lots of options for everyone. The drink menu is extensive a d we all tried something new. The ladies tried the elegant cocktails, the gentlemen, the whiskeys and bourbon. Everyone enjoyed their drinks. I would definitely recommend trying The Smiths the next time you need a great restaurant and a really good cocktail!
After a day at the Mall, we went to The Smith for lunch. We were seated immediately, and our server greeted us as we sat down although it was busy. The sourdough bread was very good. I opted to get the veggie burger which was moist and flavorful. The fries were crisp. My friend had the Vanilla Bean French Toast. I ordered the Cucumber Mule mocktail which was delicious. We went during brunch but would have loved a few more options on the menu. Overall the food, staff and atmosphere were impressive. Definitely recommend.
The food is amazing. We tried brunch, lunch and diner on differrnt days and kept returning to this place not because it was conveniently across the street from our hotel but because the food was deserving, atmosphere was very nice and service was attentive and fast. Everything we tried from their menu was awesome, but special mention to their burger which was very good and their mac and cheese was delicious. Totally recommended!
This place was wonderful! The food was fantastic! Had oysters, spaghetti ...and the ghost pepper fries were delicious (not too hot...promise). It was super busy...but informed our waitress we needed to be out in time for a tour...and they made it happen! The service was superb!
I had the Ribeye and it was amazing! Comparable to Old Ebbit if not better! My friends ordered The Smith burger and the Chicken Milanese —they enjoyed their meals :) We ordered almost all the desserts—the cookie was good but disappointing as that was it and it was not as big as pictured—no ice cream); the sundae was okay—our favorite was the Sticky Toffee Pudding!?!? I was surprised! Appetizers we ordered the potato chips with the blue cheese fondue and the Brussels sprouts—ask for the cheese sauce to be separate! Chips don’t get soggy and you can use it to dip other stuff—so good!!!!!!!!!
The thing that stood out to me the most was the service. Very welcoming. Loved the staff. The day I went in the place wasn't crowded so me and my party we're able to be seated quickly. They provide indoor and outdoor seating but we HAD to sit inside because it was beautiful inside. Very romantic setting. On top of everything, the food was amazing and didn't have to wait long to eat either.
Omg the food. I’m buying whatever they are selling here. The Mac and cheese is top notch! The deluxe burger is excellent. The fries were okay but still delicious. Busy place on a Saturday night. Featuring indoor and outdoor seating. It is well worth a visit here. Great staff!
The Smith here in D.C. is a vibrant, stylish spot that offers a standout breakfast experience. Located near the bustling Penn Quarter, it balances a trendy atmosphere with a warm, welcoming vibe. Our party of four visited for breakfast and were thoroughly impressed with both the food and service. The shrimp and grits were nothing short of spectacular. The dish was rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced—with creamy grits serving as the ideal base for tender, well-seasoned shrimp. It's a must-try for anyone who appreciates Southern-inspired comfort food with a refined twist. One of my friends ordered the steak, and it was cooked to perfection—juicy, well-seasoned, and beautifully plated. It paired excellently with the breakfast sides, making for a satisfying and hearty morning meal. The service was attentive and friendly without being overbearing, and the staff kept things running smoothly even as the restaurant filled up. The ambiance, with its tiled floors and vintage lighting, added a cozy yet sophisticated touch to the overall experience. Whether you're meeting friends or just looking for a delicious breakfast in the city, The Smith delivers on all fronts. We left full, happy, and already planning our next visit. It’s a place that makes breakfast feel like a real occasion.
The food is excellent, starting with their freshly squeezed orange juice, which was the perfect complement to our brunch. The menu included a drink, which added great value to the meal. The pancakes were absolutely top-notch—fluffy and flavorful. I also had the shrimp and grits, which were 10/10, and the Smith Burger, which was equally impressive. The only dish that didn’t completely win me over was the macaroni and cheese. While it was still delicious, it wasn't my favorite. Our server Lexi was the best, really sweet kind, attentive and made us feel welcomed. Thank you Lexi!
It was so good, I forgot to take pictures of the eggs benedict I had ordered. Norvin was our sever who was very friendly and very attentive. Chris ( maybe the manager) wss equally friendly as he took our payment chatted us. The portions are perfect. The atmosphere fun and prices reasonable.
We had a 6hr stopover in DC and decided to start the morning with brunch at The Smith. Absolutely loved the food we ordered; chicken sandwich and (half) eggs Benedict. Their free biscuits & butter were to die for. We also really appreciated the service and staff who did not pressure us for tips and were rather surprised (grateful) when we left a tip. Also the upgraded dinner aesthetic was quite pleasant.
This restaurant was nothing short of amazing. Brianna did an excellent job accommodating us as we celebrate our 24th anniversary. The entire experience was top notch. We will definitely be back again.
Nice atmosphere. Did was good. Service was good. Would have been nice if server good us that died fries were included and you can choose spicy fries.
Wow, this place is fabulous. I’ve been to the sister location in NYC, so had to try this one, and they do it much better here. The staff were fantastic, our waitress Brianna was top tier and super friendly, shout out to the manager, who was obviously hands on and doing everything he could do to help the staff, from holding doors to cleaning up plates to checking on tables, you could tell they cared about the customer experience here. The gnocchi is my absolute favorite out of any place I’ve been, the pasta bolognese, calamari and chocolate cake are all fantastic as well. We made reservations and ate here prior to walking to the fire works at the national mall for the 4th of July, it’s conveniently located for an easy walk to the monuments, highly recommend if you are deciding on a place, and definitely make reservations. Looking forward to being back soon.
Service was great. Food was delicious & fresh. A very nice place for special occasions and date nights.
The donut bites are a MUST try, no matter what time of morning or day it is!! Huevos rancheros, eggs benedict, and many of the cocktails and lattes are top tier delightful. Super trendy interior and awesome brunch menu.
I was here for a work dinner, the waitress was very friendly and helpful with recommending featured plates. I ordered the spicy shrimp scampi and it was delicious! I also tried the cucumber beer and that was a great refreshment. Overall great dinner restaurant!
I have ordered delivery from this place so many times and recently dined in. The mac + cheese, rigatoni alla vodka, braised short rib fusilli, Smith bar steak, garlic mashed potatoes, and sticky toffee pudding are amazing. Service was a little slow for a Wednesday night, but the food was amazing. I love the green peppercorn sauce! I usually substitute the fries for mashed potatoes, but the fries are good too! Love this place, would definitely recommend (making a reservation!)!
Good American restaurant ! I had the Smith Burger and the oyster for my lunch. It's taste really good. Oyster are fresh without any smell and the burger is delicious. Portion is good. Everything is perfect. Staffs are helpful and seating area are big but it's good if you can do reservation especially the peak time. Credit card accepted. Enjoy !
First time being at the DC' branch, overall nice experience. We went for brunch they have a good variety of choices for brunch. The vanilla bean French toast was not too sweet and topped with berries. The guy who served us was attentive and sharp helping with choosing the food.
The food was fantastic and although it was packed, crazy busy ti the brim, the staff stayed friendly. The Brussels sprouts in green goddess deressing were cooked to perfection and my burger was fantastic. The fries were fluffy, light, not too salty or greasy. My friend loved his pork chop. Skip the wine, not a good selection and go direct to the cocktails. The atmosphere is the only issue. The lights were too dim and they stuffed the tables too close to the wall with no pathway. I spent an hour and 15 minutes being bumped by elbows, patrons, servers, bottles, etc… and there is nothing to break up the sound in the restaurant. If the food and staff were not as incredible as they were, it would have been three stars. But the staff and service carry it through. The wine glasses are the worst I’ve ever seen both fit smell, have feel, and enjoying wine. You’ll see it in my photo.
I truly enjoyed the service that I received at The Smith! The food was also very delicious. I ordered their breakfast omelette that came with a side salad. It was the best omelette that I’ve ever eaten. Not only was it cooked to perfection, but the herbs and garnish made it taste quite fresh. I would definitely eat here when I visit D.C. again!
Fantastic steaks, lovely server, would absolutely come again, no complaints at all!
Had a great experience at The Smith -DC during lunch hour in October. Our server was great, and the food selections were even better. Biscuits were brought to the table at the start of the meal. Chilled oystsers were very fresh. Eggs benedict was prepared to perfection. The glass of champagne added a nice flavor to the meal. The coffee wasn't as hot for the first pour. But our server corrected that on the spot. The Smith will satify any flavor palette!
love the high end yet casual vibes here. spacious restaurant with bar seating and outdoor tables. lots of vegetarian options to choose from. very tasty cocktails (recommend the cucumber loco)! the rigatoni alla vodka was excellent. excellent service to top it off! side note- very walkable to the national mall for a post-meal walk. great location
Stopped through for an early lunch while exploring the city. The food was fantastic and the service was second to none. We ordered the Ranchero Scramble and the Smith Burger. Both were phenomenal and would 100% order again. Certain brunch items come with a free drink so we took advantage of that on the scramble. The mimosa was fresh and strong. The iced latte was very good as well. Random thing to note (especially for us Americans), they don’t have ranch. Which…was odd. Can’t say I’ve experienced that inside the US. The service was super fast and our waiter was super friendly. Definitely give this place a try if you’re in the area and in need of a good meal.
We had a reservation for brunch at 1030 on July 6th and were warmly greeted and promptly seated. Wilson was our server and he was excellent. He was personable, friendly, customer focused, and really seemed to enjoy taking care of us. Thank you Wilson. We received coffee, orange juice, bread and butter shortly after being seated. We ordered the french toast with berry compote , bacon, and scrambled eggs. The brunch was delicious. I do recommend The Smith and will return in the future.
This was a random pick but didn't disappoint at all from the drinks to the main course everything was great just not the bread they give you lmao to thick felt like I was doing something wrong. But the breakfast sandwich and the burger was a good choice my bro and I had split each in half and gave them a shot taste was amazing the drinks was delicious and potent i love it ! My service was just as good and the place looks too cool! When I'm back in DC I'll be stopping here again
Absolutely satisfying dining experience from beginning to end. Love the atmosphere and layout and attentive waitstaff taking a team approach to service. Went with my wife. Place was busy and full but tables spaced nicely and never felt over-crowded. Started off with oysters and shrimp which was well-presented with nice sizes and sauces. My wife got the Crispy Chicken Paillard which was wonderfully breaded with delicate sauce. I got the Wedge which was one of the best and ample wedge salads I’ve ever had. Her chicken was plentiful and was able to share. The beer tap selection is very nice and good variety. Left feeling very satisfied.
Stopped in on a recommendation. Caught the happy hour special Royale platter (delicious, impressive presentation, delicious) and martini (brilliantly dirty). Bartenders were friendly and attentive, even while handling the happy hour group. Would certainly recommend.
The vibe is what I expected - beautiful old wood and vintage tile floor designs. Staff is friendly and made solid recommendations. Exceptional hamburger. Perfectly seasoned, pink, juicy, and assembled to not sog the brioche bun. Short rib pasta was also very well balanced with flavor and texture. Cocktails were good. Honestly, I have thought about that burger for days since.
The food here never disappoints. My best friend and I came for Valentine’s Day brunch, and it was such a great experience. The mimosas were delicious — the passionfruit orange is a must-try if you’re in the mood for something different. A special thank you to our server, Andrea. Even with the holiday rush, she remained attentive, efficient, and kind. She truly helped make our Valentine’s Day celebration memorable.
Silvia was top tier with her service, kept the drinks coming and made sure we were good at all times. The food is really good slight mishap on the way I wanted my steak cooked, but they definitely fixed that immediately. I came here for Thanksgiving ladt year and really enjoyed it and brunch did not disappoint. Definitely will be back just know the drinks are 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
If you in DC and close to the museums try is place for sure Customer service is great and so are the food We tried the chicken sandwich and the Ranchero scramble and both were delicious Tons of flavor made with fresh ingredients One interesting thing is that they give sparkling was free and as much as you want Our waiter was very sincere and we enjoyed the Brunch as we were hungry ! Definitely plan to go back again if we are in the DC area
I like the ambiance of the place. It gives you an industrial feel. Especially in the bathroom. Only complaint is the stalls are very dark inside the bathroom. My friend and I went during happy hour on a Fri. We had the special, which was scallops and risotto. We actually split it. The scallops were cooked to perfection and the risotto was delicious. We both got a side to share and honestly we didn't need it. Everyone spoke to us as they walked by, the employees that is. They have 2 large tables by the bar that is for shared sitting so yes you may sit with someone you don't know. Also, we did receive bread and butter. We both expected it to be warm but it wasn't. It definitely would've tasted better if it was warm.
We ended up here for brunch while visiting DC for the cherry blossoms. We were very happy to come across it on our way to a different spot, changing plans when we saw the menu and outdoor seating. The shrimp and grits were delicious! Very creamy, filling, and hot in their personal cast iron skillet. Oysters were also very good, although a little pricy. Our server, Amethyst, was very attentive and enthusiastic. It was very busy, but the food didn’t take too long. The location close to Gallery Place Metro and the arena was convenient.
Possibly my favorite brunch spot! The best eggs Benedict I've ever had, and phenomenal buttermilk toffee pancakes. The vanilla bean French toast wasn't to my preference, but the roasted potatoes and orange juice were divine. The lunch/dinner here isn't as good, sadly. The spicy shrimp scampi and grilled chicken sandwich were both good, but very small for the price. The Smith Burger was also a bit underwhelming. I was disappointed enough to remove a star. But the sticky toffee pudding absolutely knocked it out of the park! I will definitely return for that, and for brunch!
I really like the atmosphere but our server was tired after a long day. Many of us ordered the branzino dish and none of us liked it--the actual fish was good but that sauce was off. I returned mine and got the mussels instead and they were much better. I appreciated the manager who checked in on my group. The drinks were tasty and we were able to get separate checks. Overall, I am willing to come back. I heard they have a popular brunch on the weekends.
Stopped in for a few drinks but ended up ordering the calamari appetizer. The portion was small but it was delicious. Good choice of drinks.
I ordered the "Smith Egg Benedict." It consisted of two muffin breads with eggs, forest ham, and some sort of house sauce on it with a side of potatoes. The food was okay, not impressive! The place is clean and has a good atmosphere. The pricing is reasonable. The reason I didn't give it a 5-star rating is because the service wasn't great. The waiter wasn't very attentive, especially considering that I was the only customer besides another couple in the restaurant. The service was a bit slow. I would suggest the waiters and greeters to be more cheerful. I understand it's a job, but that's not an excuse. Additionally, it felt like everything took forever, from placing my order to getting my drink and even paying the bill. UPDATE: The management has personally reached out to me and kindly requested that I give their restaurant another try. I truly appreciate this gesture as it demonstrates their genuine concern for the feedback and satisfaction of their customers.
The Smith has a cool vibe. I visited with friends on a Friday evening and noticed quite a few families—so if you’re looking to meet other singles, it might not be the ideal spot. The appetizer we tried was tasty, but portions were on the smaller side; for example, the Burrata came with only three pieces of bread.
I was highly dissatisfied with my food and the description of my menu item was misleading. I was visiting DC for the day from out of town and had it not been for the occasion I was there for, I would have sent this back and made a complaint to the chef. The manager or whomever is in charge of the menu knows better than to serve some BS like this. The headline for my item was BRAISED SHORT RIBS and mascaldine was the subtitle (along with Parmesan, tomatoes and something else). These little tidbits of dog looking food (the tiny little piece on the white fork pictured), the size of a raisin, is supposed to be the BRAISED SHORT RIBS. I confirmed with two waitresses that I had the right order and they said it was correct. The description should had read "Mafaldine with pieces of short ribs" would have been more appropriate as the Braised short ribs is not the headliner. I took it to go because I wasn't able to get a photo at the restaurant. I had high hopes for this place as a referral and coming from out of town and this was highly disappointing and ruined my mood. As stated, if it weren't for the other guests I was there with, I would have definitely asked for the manager. Also, why is cold butter served with the complimentary bread? You can't even spread it. Also the trash can in the women's restroom was overflowing.
Business trip. Stopped here for a quick bit. Food was excellent. I had a vegetarian dish. It was excellent. It was also in a really hot bowl. No worries. Service was mediocre. I felt very forgotten. Therefore I skipped desert.
The Smith, Washington, DC — 7/10 The Smith offers a charming parlor-style aesthetic with a well-designed communal table in the bar area, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The food exceeded expectations across the board: the calamari was perfectly cooked, with crispy edges and a delightful brine from the fried peppers and olives that complemented the richness of the dish. The Smith burger was cooked to a perfect medium rare, showcasing quality craftsmanship that kept the bun from getting soggy. The penne alla vodka was al dente and coated in a rich, velvety sauce—no complaints there. However, the experience was marred by service issues that significantly impacted our enjoyment. One of my biggest pet peeves is when food arrives before your drinks, especially at a mid to higher-end restaurant. Big red flag! It appeared that the restaurant prioritized quick table turnover, possibly rushing food out to expedite service during busy times, regardless of actual capacity. I politely addressed the pace with our waiter, asking to slow down, only to have our meals come out minutes later, cutting short our dining experience. We left without ordering another drink or dessert. The whole experience felt rushed. If I was to return, I will control the pacing myself by picking my ordering. Regardless, a customer should have to do this at a nice establishment. Additionally, the professionalism of the wait staff was lacking, particularly at the communal table near the POS system, where the servers were loud and obnoxious, detracting from the overall ambiance. In conclusion, The Smith shows great potential with its quality food and inviting setting. Unfortunately, inconsistent service and a lack of finesse at the price point prevent it from reaching the heights it could achieve. With some improvements in service and professionalism, it could truly be a standout dining spot.
While our waitress was super friendly and welcoming, the food was really underwhelming. The portions were tiny and not generous with protein. The coffee was gross and lukewarm. It was actually really expensive for the portions. I don’t recommend this restaurant. The chicken sandwich ($23) was tiny and the chicken breast was small as you can see. Please go elsewhere. You will here leave hungry.
My review might be a bit long, but I believe in giving everything its due. My husband and I had lunch today at The Smith restaurant. The setting was beautiful, surrounded by little birds, which I really enjoyed as someone who loves nature. As for the food, we both ordered burgers with fries, Caesar salad, and cola. I requested my burger well-done, while my husband asked for his medium. Unfortunately, my burger arrived burnt around the edges, and my husband’s burger was also cooked well-done instead of medium. The Caesar salad didn’t arrive at all even after we had finished our main course. So we ended up canceling it, as it was no longer needed at that point. At the end of the meal, I ordered a cappuccino to unwind after a long and busy day. Sadly, it was served poorly the cup was sticky because coffee had spilled over and onto the saucer. I didn’t appreciate that level of carelessness. I do appreciate that they didn’t charge us for the cappuccino, but honestly, whether I paid for it or not wasn’t the issue , what mattered to me was the experience. Unfortunately, my visit to this restaurant was disappointing. Others may have had better experiences, but it seems like the chef wasn’t having a good day during ours.
It should have been a fast in and out experience, I only wanted the Honey crust apple pie. Unfortunately I waited for more than half an hour and got a raw pie dough. I would say it was a disappointing and disgusting experience. It was on the pricey side for a not worth it pie. Service was unprofessional and very very slow. Would I come back? Definitely never.
huevos rancheros were very seasoned and the cornbread under the poached eggs was very yum. Only memorable downside that was they didn’t have a decent vegetarian substitute on offer for the bacon with the poached eggs. Attentive servers
