Beautifully decorated. Lovely atmosphere. Nice food.
Whoever is your cellar man needs an applause - quality Jaipur - and the Dcarborough Fair - best pint he’s ever had!! - he tries a lot of them
During our recent stay at the Royal Hotel, we decided to have a light meal one evening. we ordered food from the bar the pizza, fries, salad and wine were tasty and more than met our needs. The bar area is a nice environment and very quirky.
We chose our starters off the specials menu, the lobster crumpet and the scallop dishes were absolutely amazing we loved them!! The kids pizza went down amazing and I chose the pork tomahawk main special and my partner had the fillet steak. Everything we ate was outstanding and our server was lovely too! We are locals and we will definitely be back soon! Especially for the scallops!
My only regret for the meal at the Fat Badger was that I didn’t take pictures of the mains. The food was some of the best I have had not just in Whitby but generally. We had the Kiev folded pizza and the beef burger, both were better than we have had previously at specific restaurants for both. The decor is clean and modern and would almost be intimidating with how posh it looks but this is eased by the excellent service there and the near underpriced food. The staff were all very friendly and exceptionally pleasant. We live around 2 1/2 hours away from Whitby but would easily plan a day trip just to eat there again.
Great spot sat outside for a drink with nice views, and if it's raining the bar inside is really nice with a great choice of beers, cocktails and more. We ate in the restaurant one night and the food was the best we had in Whitby. Crab starter - delicious, Steak pie amazing, and the Golden Honey badger cocktail also highly recommended. Shout out all the barstaff and waiters who were friendly, attentive and good fun.
Lovely food, super polite staff with lovely decor a testament to how food and drink should be served well done everyone involved
Absolutely fantastic. The lady who served us ( her name began with an E and she had dark hair ) was so funny and attentive. Great food and beers too, well worth the price
The atmosphere and vibes were immaculate. We were met and sat by the lovely Meri. Although it was very busy and all the servers were running around, they made sure everyone was met with a smile and excellent service. The food was amazing as advertised and they did not disappoint on the portion sizes. Would definitely visit again!
My husband and I have always loved the bar at the Royal Hotel mainly because the veranda hosts stunning views out to sea and of the Abbey ruins and St Mary’s Church. We always sit at the veranda with a cheeky tipple or two. On our most visit to Whitby we experienced the hotel and bar renovations at The Royal for the first time. On arrival, we were met with bold and imposing dark coloured walls in place of the previously light blue, cream and gold foyer. The beautiful fireplaces have gone - I wonder if gone forever or if the fires will reappear once the decor is completed? (building work in the foyer wasn't complete during our visit - this was obvious as work was being completed by a team of builders - a little noisy, but this can be forgiven - work has to be done!). The transformation of the foyer was relatively breath taking not due to how impressive the alterations were, but because it was so vastly different and at first these alterations were a little disappointing. Previously the foyer was a nod to the past-time mariner theme that runs deeply through Whitby for obvious reasons - previously the foyer hosted beautiful brass Flemish Chandeliers, reclaimed style teak boat wood and Georgian style fireplaces - giving the impression the the decor was exactly as it was when Abraham Stoker stayed here (I adored this feeling of nostalgia; now gone). The foyer is now fully evolved into the 21st century using Dark Academia and Modern Victorian as its interior style blueprint negating any feeling of nostalgia - yet quite potentially beautiful. I wish that the mariner past-time and Modern Victorian styles were combined, that the fireplaces, Flemish Chandeliers and wood were maintained - giving a more authentic impression of the building. Following on from the foyer through to The Fat Badger (new name for the bar and restaurant - I believe there is another in Harrogate) is a drastic transformation from the somewhat held back 1980’s style watering hole of its predecessor (aptly titled Captain Cook’s Bar and Lounge). I was so pleased to see Bram Stokers plaque and picture hanging in the bar area (evidence in the photos ‘wink’), although this is a delegation position. The bar is a stunning dark wood framed with beautiful warm lighting - so inviting it made me want to stay for the night. Anthropomorphic Victorian animal paintings cluster every wall of the bar area, keeping to the Modern Victorian style - a taxidermy Badger shelved at the back of the bar really drives this style forward. The drinks and food menu are excellent - a range of traditional cocktails and spritz along with a range of sparkling wines and champagnes, wines and beers. The food menu hosts traditional pub food, grill, pizza and VEGAN options. My husband had the Vedu pizza which was given 5 of 5 stars and I had the Moving Mountains Burger - this was beautiful, topped with VEGAN mozzarella and accompanied by fries. The service was second to none, the waiting staff were friendly and attentive. All in a nutshell, I was slightly disappointed by the ‘in your face’ Modern Victorian / Dark Academic style interiors - particularly as the trad-historical features are a complete remnant of the past. The bar area is warm and inviting and the food and service was excellent. I highlight recommend a visit when you are in Whitby - although get there quick, it seems many holiday makers are also impressed with the alternations - it was busier than I have ever seen it.
Delicious meals, very friendly staff; fantastic fish&chips; cosy and spacious bar with killer cocktails!
Visited Sunday for the roast. It didn't disappoint. Beef melted in the mouth, vegetables cooked to perfection. Very attentive & friendly staff, lovely decor.
Excellent pie, great service. Beautiful location overlooking Whitby Harbour. Recommended
My partner, My Son and I stumbled upon this little place whilst taking him to explore Whitby for the first time. We could not tell if the restaraunt was open, or not, but the manager ensured us it was by kindly offering to help lift my Sons pram into the restaraunt up the steps. The food was actually delicious. Very well balanced flavours overall and I was surprised at the price! Starter, 3 mains and alcoholic drinks, £66! I would recommend a visit.
We had a fantastic stay, thank you for making are stay memorable, can't wait to come back in March.
Very nice place to have a drink and or a meal Lovely atmosphere friendly staff Will definitely be going again
V pleasant bar with great choice of beers. Did not eat but plenty of other customers were getting stuck in. Nice decor, place currently getting done up. Nice staff.
Excellent food, lovely atmosphere and very attentive service. Highly recommended
We had a wonderful time and our waitress Aniko was amazing 🙂.
Good atmosphere, typically what you'd expect in Yorkshire, if / when i go back there, I will definitely visit again! 👍
Real ale on top form And a good selection would definitely recommend 👍
Best meal in an ages, lovely staff, great price and great vibe. We will be back for sure!! Thank you
Lovely Xmas dinner great service by cj and all the staff . Had a lovely meal and was worth every penny for my
The Fat Badger within the Royal Hotel Whitby. Superb Bar and Dining areas. Great selection of Ales (8 on tap when i visited). Superb Food.
Lovely meal, friendly staff, managed to seat us even without a booking. Delicious food, I’d recommend the pigeon starter!
We just dropped in on the off chance as our local restaurant had to close due to a flood. The food took a while, over 50 minutes, but they were very busy. When it came, it did not disappoint; the staff were very friendly.
Christmas lunch was good. The food was a little fancy for me but the staff and atmosphere was great.
We popped in the Royal Hotel, totally unaware that this fabulous bar was there. The decor was really lovely and quirky and the staff were so friendly. The place had a lovely buzz about it. They just need to advertise outside otherwise you don't know it's there, as the hotel is currently covered in scaffolding, which I'm sure would put people off. We only had drinks, but also very good value as this is a hotel bar.
3 course Sunday lunch with my husband. From booking yesterday..the lady on the phone was so friendly and professional..I actually mentioned it to my husband. On arrival we were seated with our little terrier in the dog friendly part of the restaurant. We have a second home in Whitby but this was our 1st visit to this hotel..we eat out daily while visiting but never fancied eating here, how wrong we were. It
Omg the pie!! We had a lovely meal the pie was amazing would highly recommend. The staff were busy in the bar so took a while for drinks but the food was lovely and the restaurant itself is lovely too
The royal hotel has been transformed, the renovation and detailing, use of colour and decor has real character and a great atmosphere. Good selection of beers with AF 1664 on tap which is most welcome to a Social T Total like myself. Will be back next time we visit. We didn’t eat so can’t rate the food.
We didn't eat here but the food did look nice. Probably around 10 beers on tap, all different types to try and some good local ales from Whitby and Scarborough. Nice, friendly bar service every time we went up...
I had a great evening at The Fat Badger. The staff were friendly, welcoming and considering how busy it was very efficient. The food was excellent. The Halibut main was very well presented and was cooked to perfection. The desserts are also very good too 😀 Oh and the decor inside is very impressive
Beautiful Hotel. The character has been preserved whilst giving the wow factor. The bar and restaurant area was lovely. We have a little bichon dog so we had our meal in the last room of the restaurant which was perfect. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We have booked again. We will try another one of your hotels this year too.
Our 3rd Sunday Lunch. Always very good apart from the Roast Potatoes which are always the same, dry, not very hot and rubbery. Clearly cooked well in advance then warmed up poorly which is a shame. We eat around 4pm but meals should be consistent all day. I hate to complain but please get these right and Sunday Lunch would be 100%
Food was excellent, I had the fillet steak and my husband had the badger burger. We ate in the bar area as it was lunchtime and there was a good atmosphere in there. Decor was modern and lovely. I don’t think the venue had been open long and it was difficult to find as there was nothing outside the Royal Hotel to say the Fat Badger was located there (scaffolding didn’t help). Staff were very pleasant but need to learn some basics - we ordered a cocktail prior to ordering food and it took 25 minutes to get these, one person on bar kept serving other people with pints etc. before making the cocktails. When they did arrive they were tasty. When food arrived, we had no cutlery and asked for some. We received a box with condiments and cutlery in but there was only two forks and a spoon. We asked for some knives which we received, and then a steak knife was also provided. These things should be checked prior to bringing to the customer. A little bit of staff training would sort this out. Having said that, we enjoyed our food and we would return.
Superb bar/restaurant on the west cliff. Beautiful no expense spared interior, great range of cask ales , kegs ect. Relaxing atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit. 👍👌
We had got a Whitby Tour bus ticket which on the reverse had an add for the Fat Badger. As the tour bus ticket has a hop on and off service for 24 hours we decided to try the pub. Note this is situated within the Royal Hotel. The sign is not clear due to scaffolding and renovation work on the outside. Could do with a bigger sign on the scaffold as we missed the entrance and ended up further down the street. We did not realise it was within the Royal Hotel. It was very busy but we found a seat and ordered. Not the cheapest but the food was very good. Would recommend especially if you buy a tour bus ticket and visit on a Monday as there is an offer of a burger and a pint for £14.00. The tour bus stops outside.
Great decor and atmosphere in the bar and restaurant, attentive staff. Recommended..
Great place great staff... The only thing that bugged me was how everyones conversations seemed to be so loud... Two members of staff a woman and bloke stood next to our table talking very loudly about how to decorate the bar area for christmas we had to stop our conversation till they moved away... I nearly told them both to go away.. Later the same woman walked past us again shouting hello to a friend across the room... A nice place but the acoustics need sorting out... Lol
Lovely bar, nice decor, great selection of real ales. Bit on the pricey side and had to ask for ales to be topped up after being served, which didn't impress the bar staff. Quite a busy and noisy environment
Great food, great service, lovely decor. We had a wonderful Sunday roast at a reasonable price. The only sour notes was the lack of any outstanding ales and also why in such a classy room would you want swearing printed on your literature?
Had sunday lunch today, service was very good and the surroundings are very nice. The food however wasnt warm enough for us.
Went today with a party of 4 + a baby. We arrived at 6.45pm and ordered food and drinks about 10min later. Unfortunately we wait to wait over 1 hour and a half for our food. Service was awful - no reason was given for the delay, Its a shame, as food was actually quite good. However not worth the poor service.
Used this place numerous times since it opened but no more ! Disgusting to use dynamic pricing over goth weekend so what would be £5.50 a pint suddenly jumped to £7.30 for a cask ale ! £7.30 ! Pure greed !
Booked on open table. Waitress checked us in. Was seated at the table. We had our drinks from the bar. Sat for 10 mins to be told it would be an hour wait for food. So we left
We went here for food as we had heard good things about their other restaurants. We really wish that we hadn't bothered. To start with the staff seem bemused that we had booked a table. It was my birthday and we wanted to ensure that we got a table, so we booked. We got seated only to then have to wait ages to get someone to take our drinks order. The drinks took forever to arrive (a pattern repeated later when we had to ask 3 times for an ordered drink). The food was notable by it's mediocrity and the presence of nasty burnt bits. The burger in particular tasted (and smelt) like it had been cooked on a grill that hadn't been cleaned properly, or at all. All in all very poor.
Had a very disappointing visit to the Fat Badger this evening. Arrived at the restaurant at 7.15 gave our order for drinks and food. Drinks arrived. Ordered another drink all from the same waitress. After 55 minutes we asked when our food would be served only to be told by the waitress who took the order that she had forgotten to put it through. Had we not enquired would we still be waiting!!!!! Certainly would not recommend a visit.
Awful Sunday roast. Where to begin…the roast potatoes were anaemic, undercooked and no crunch at all. The mash was lumpy, cauliflower under boiled but over grilled with no cheese, the ‘stuffing’ in the pork was non existent, apple sauce straight out of a industrial sized pot, chicken was over cooked and dry and worst of all the gravy was burnt, ruining every other aspect of the dish. Drinks only arrived 20 seconds before the food. For the avoidance of doubt, the worst Sunday lunch I’ve had. I am a big fan of the fat badgers in York and Harrogate. This was a let down.
Booked for Sunday evening to find no choice for menu only chicken dinner, burger, fish and chips or pizza. Didn't want this wanted a beef or pork dinner as advertised staff didn't seem interested so we left have been several times for drinks and thought we'd try the food but won't bother infuture plenty of restaurants in whitby don't need to put up with service like this
