A lovely charming pub in a great village. We’d been up to castle Howard for the Christmas displays and this was the perfect end to our evening. Cosy, friendly and lovely food.
Exceptional pub grub and customer service. Very cosy winter night by the fire! They provided our Golden retriever with a bed and water. We will definitely be coming back 😊
Lovely pub. It was recommended by a volunteer at Castle Howard the food was amazing and Vicki and Catherine were amazing hosts. we will definitely return.
The quality of the food more than justifies the more expensive bill (go to wetherspoons if you want cheap). The Korean wings were fabulous and the steak wonderful. £130 for four is not outrageous and surroundings are wonderful. Definitely returning. Special mention to the new barrel of Theakstons which was better than the one I got at their brewery in Masham!
Fabulous Sunday Roast today with friends. Food and service was excellent as was the warm welcome and lovely homely feel. Thank you. We will be returning soon!
This place is a must for all dog lovers. Food, service everything about this place is amazing including the dog friendly atmosphere, dog beds, dog drinks everything is always never too much trouble.
We made an online table reservation at the last minute after our visit to Castle Howard, and it proved to be an excellent decision. The food was absolutely wonderful and served piping hot.
I called there on Sunday with my mum for lunch, she uses a wheelchair and the booking we made was last minute. Despite this we were made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The food was very good but what really stood out was the service, every single member of staff was excellent, friendly, helpful and attentive which helped make it the perfect relaxing place for Sunday lunch.
My wife and I made an impromptu booking for lunch. We have never visited the pub before. We were immediately struck by how welcoming and friendly the staff were. The food and service were excellent. We will definitely be returning
Everything was excellent. Food and beer was great. Wonderful Sunday roast and the best pint of landlord I've had! The staff were great, particularly kind to the children in our group
Group of 13 seated in our own side room (Sat night). Lovely food, great atmosphere and fantastic attentive staff. Highly recommend. Very handy location on the way back to Scarborough from York
I had a 40th birthday celebration at the pub with around 15 people in November. It was wonderful - I was given a private room, the service was excellent, they got a complicated order bang on and managed to accommodate last minute requests expertly. And the food was great. You're in safe hands here
Had a lovely Sunday roast here. And the dog got pampered with a doggy bed and his own bowl of water. Suggest that a doggy treats menu would be great. I ended up ordering pigs in blankets to share with my boy though.
Lovely pub in the village of Welburn. Great atmosphere, delicious food and excellent service. Laura and her team made our party of 8 feel very special. We were celebrating my husband's 70th birthday and they went above and beyond looking after us, even providing a candle in his dessert. Not only that, but our dog was given a bowl of water, treats and a bed to lie on! How cool is that?
We enjoyed a super meal. The food is delicious, I recommend the pie. Friendly and attentive service. The fire was lit making it a lovely cosy and warm atmosphere and the Christmas decs look lovely. Thank you ⭐️
Wonderful owner and our server Margaret was lovely too. The food was without fault, drinks were also delicious. The pub overall has a sophisticated country feel. I would definitely recommend.
Everything you’d want from a North Yorkshire pub! Great quality food with so much flavour, good sized portions that weren’t overwhelming either, a warm atmosphere, and friendly and funny staff/management. Will definitely be back 🤠
After walking in the Howardian Hills we stopped here and were lucky enough to get a table outside in the sun. We were also lucky enough to visit in the launch day of a new menu. Very high quality menus and food to match. Very friendly staff and a well run business. Will definitely visit again.
What a fabulous find. Our party of 13 were lucky to have the separate dining room all to ourselves. The surroundings, service and food were delightful. The beef and Yorkshire puddings were prepared with pride. A great meal. Thankyou.
Very popular, book early, the pie is proper pies i.e. it's not assembled, delicious it was too.
First visit for Sunday lunch, and most definitely won’t be our last. Lovely log fire, fantastic food, great service, would highly recommend a visit, thank you again to Paul and the team!
5 Star - We visited today for a late lunch / dinner - not knowing the closing times Food was superb - as was the service, the staff were really friendly (one knew the whole beer menu off by heart) staying at a campsite up the road - this was a delicious meal, in good surroundings- its a shame that we will go back home in the week, and might not get chance to visit again. Highly recommend.
Lovely pub in cute little village. Staff were welcoming and attentive, food and drinks were amazing also. Lovely atmosphere we stayed for hours drinking the night away, didn't want to leave.
Fabulous. Dined with a group of 10 although we pre-ordered, service was great and staff very friendly. Food delicious!!
Great food was a bit expensive but worth it. Nice decor and atmosphere. Staff were lovely. Dog friendly.
Visited on Bank Holiday Monday and was really impressed with the new blonde waitress. She handled a busy and difficult shift brilliantly, gave amazing service, and was lovely to chat with. A great experience overall!
Proper food from a proper chef.... Outstanding!.... Just wish the roast potatoes were King Edward's sand Maris 'something or other'.
An absolutely wonderful Christmas Dinner. Everything was beautifully presented and piping hot. The staff were very attentive. Throughly enjoyed.
Booked an 80th birthday meal for Dad, quite last minute for 24 people. From booking to the meal itself the service was excellent and the team were really accommodating and catered for all our requests. On entry we were shown to the private dining area. Nice sized room, table for 24 people and a separate lounge area, which we didn’t use in the end. We pre ordered 48 hours in advance, and paid a £10 per head deposit. We ate from the Sunday lunch menu. Really good choices, from the Sunday Roasts to Steak Pie and burgers, and vegetarian options. Food was great, quality and quantity, and we would say good value for money. Staff were really helpful, and really attentive. Vicky in particular made sure the afternoon went really smoothly. Would highly recommend the Crown and Cushion for Sunday lunch. Will definitely be visiting again.
Food good but not amazing. Great open fires and good atmosphere. Could have had more real ales. Generally worth a visit
Was looking forward to the steak pie, but sadly the pastry was very hard and dry. Flatbread was also overheated and hard on my partner's kofta dish - the meat was also disappointing. Good service from professional ladies. Will come back to try other meals as the overall feel is quality.
Modernised pub, with period features near Castle Howard. Starters of fried Brie and vegetable soup (pictured) were great, as was the steak and ale pie (pictured). The fish pie (pictured) mash and sauce were seasoned well, but the fish wasn’t flakey and the prawns were rubbery. They’d also run out of hot chocolate, which for February isn’t great. Other than that service and servers were good.
Typical corporate pub. Food average with above average prices. Beer choices of lagers and cask quite good. Wine pricey and ordinary. Speaking as a local this place is never my first choice to eat due to inconsistent food quality and prices although recently efforts are being made to improve. Overall, only just about ok.
A group of 4 of us meet here every so often. New menu just launched so 2 of us were looking forward to the gammon, we arrived at 12 when it opened, ordered our meals and then a few mins later waitress came back out and said sorry we have no gammon! Very disappointing, so had pie instead which was ok but nothing to write home about. Couldn't fault the waitress she was lovely (Katherine) we normally sit in front room but got sat in the back dining room which I found really dark and depressing and table looked like it hadn't been wiped. Not much atmosphere. We come here every 3 to 4 mths but just felt disappointed this time. Ladies toilets were dirty and noticed quite a few cobwebs and dust. Just feel standards have slipped.
Reasonable food at a resonable price served by friendly staff. My guest enjoyed his steak and sticky toffee pudding. My rissoto was as exciting as they get. Only issue that let the experience down was a side order of triple cooked potato chips (£4.50) which was modest in size, dark brown and dried out. I can't think why a professional chef would have sent them out.
Food was very nice and the beer well kept and tasty. The manager / owner kept having to remind staff to serve the customers though. The big downside was that I should have checked my bill more closely. When I got home I found a 10% service charge which was not mentioned on the menu, nor by the staff. I don't mind tipping, for good service, but this was hidden from me. I hope the staff get the 10%? I see that someone else asked but got no reply on that point.
HBH treated to lunch by friends. Lovely location, only 1 other client. Greeted and shown a table. We had questions regarding allergies for 3 of us [a vegetarian, a Dairy Free and a gluten allergy] that did add to the confusion. There are, in my opinion, too many menus; A specials blackboard, an Al a Carte menu, 2 or 3 course choices, a Lunchtime Special menu, todays specials. Having made our choices some were unavailable. Unfortunately. our host ended up with just a bowl of soup, which was a poor deal as the meal cost him a total of £90+
Unfortunately the roast beef was predominantly raw and cold. Items were missing from our plate and when we chased it up, we were told to share 1 portion between 5 of us. The offer of 6 pigs in blankets between 5 of us wasn’t the condolence they thought it was. The “warm” pudding was also cold. The milk curdled in the bottom of my coffee. We ate what we could but won’t be returning.
Wouldn't cater for my coeliac girlfriend who is also a vegetarian, best the chef could offer was a salad, wasn't busy so very disappointed. Went to the stone trough about a mile and a half away instead amazing went above and beyond.
We came for Sunday lunch for Mother's Day and what a disappointment. Used to be fantastic but what a difference! Prawn cocktail starter was horrific - Tasteless, bland and small. Roast beef was a £2 supplement which we all opted for and was advertised as 'served pink'. It was served brown and well done. The plate was swimming in watery gravy and sides were average at best. Service - when we arrived our table was being cleared so they asked us if we could have a drink at the bar first. We were more than happy with this, but after 2 minutes we were told we had to sit down as our table was ready.. we asked if we could finish our drinks and the manager said no. We ordered our wine mid way through our starters, which didn't arrive until our mains were nearly finished. They tried to clear up our table whilst my mum was still eating.. Although the young wait staff didn't seem to know what they were doing, they seemed very polite. Clearly hadn't been given much instruction from the manager, who was unbelievably rude. I asked for the service charge to be removed and when I said things hadn't been great, the manager just put his head down and apologised without seeming to really care at all, he didn't even ask what the issues were. Such a shame as we used to love this place!
