This venue is busy and has a good atmosphere. The decor is very English, beautiful leaded light windows, smartly dressed waiting staff who are extremely well trained. The food is on the expensive side but you get a very f er Levant setting, good service and nice food. Portions are a little on the small side but you can always order more! When we left, there was a long queue but we didn’t feel any pressure to leave. A good experience and well worth it. Our breakfast was scrambled eggs on a muffin and rosti with poached egg & bacon, both had tea, it was 50 pounds with a 5 pound tip.
As visitors from Scotland, we can't recommend Betty's tea room in Harrogate high enough. It's an absolute must-do if you find yourself in Harrogate. We arrived for lunch and, as expected, there was a small queue forming outside. But honestly, don't let that put you off for a second. The line moves quickly, and it's a testament to the place as just how popular and loved this place actually is. And inside, you're transported to a world of elegance and old-school charm. The atmosphere is lovely, but what truly makes the experience so special is the staff. They are simply fabulous! From the moment we were greeted to the moment we left, every single member of the team was attentive, welcoming, and genuinely interested about making our visit perfect, they couldn’t do enough to make you welcome. We had a wonderful lunch, with impeccable food and a fantastic selection of teas, and coffee …. Everything was beautifully presented, and the service was flawless. The staff's professionalism and warmth is obviously what really set Betty's apart. They create an experience which is both luxurious and incredibly friendly, and, as a Scot, I really appreciate that … 😀 Betty's is more than just a place to eat; it's billed as a cherished Harrogate institution and an essential part of the Yorkshire experience, and to be honest it is !!. A small wait to get in is a small price to pay for the chance to enjoy such an enchanting and memorable lunch. We left feeling totally spoiled and with a promise to ourselves that we will definitely be back. The food, the cakes, the staff, the venue all adds up to a wonderful experience at Betty’s.
We were told to visit this place as it is an iconic tea room. There are only four locations within 45 miles of York. We had to wait in line for about thirty minutes, but that was expected so no big deal. Once in, this was a very large place with plenty of seating. We ordered individual items but of course full tea was available with various sandwiches, sweets and other goodies. The staff was friendly and helpful. Items were available in a small shop in the way out as well.
I absolutely loved the afternoon tea experience here. From the beautifully presented food and the impressive variety of teas to the thoughtfully curated menu, every detail was perfect. The live pianist and the elegant Belmont Room added a special touch, creating a truly enchanting atmosphere. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive, making the experience even more memorable. This is truly a must-do when visiting York! Just a tip—be sure to book in advance, as it’s a popular spot. 🫖
Just simply sublime! The Belmont room is a beautiful piece of interior design and from the moment I walked in I was provided with the best service I could possibly be given, second to none! They take your coat for you and make all the necessary dietary arrangements for you so your afternoon tea is perfect. I loved the endless selection of teas and especially the Christmas tea, the hints of cinnamon complemented the festive feel of the tea. Serenaded by a beautifully composed live pianist, who was playing Christmas songs all afternoon, the atmosphere was second to none. The afternoon tea I had with items swapped out for my nut allergy was delicious, especially the scones you can tell the butter was extremely high quality due to how thick it was. I was served by the wonderful Imogen I believe. She had such a wonderful smile and demeanour and catered to my every need that afternoon, I made sure to leave her a big tip. I was also pleased you could order shop items from the Belmont room itself which really helped avoid that gnarly queue downstairs.
Our first trip to Betty’s. Excellent service, no wait despite going at lunch time. Lovely service and friendly staff. The fish bake with salmon and prawn and haddock was delicious. The afternoon tea was a must to test. A satisfying and unhurried experience. It was my daughter’s birthday and so they bought her out a little fondant fancy with a candle on it. A nice but not over the top gesture.
You kind of expect this response when it comes to bettys. But it's well deserved. Just finished our evening with sweets- the engadine, sticky toffee, cheesecake and the sundae. All received fulsome praise. If I was being picky, the engadine was a little dry once the toffee sauce was gone; but the almond flavour was delicious. I also had the mojito- the ginger adding a really pleasant aftertaste. Hit chocolates were enjoyed too. The pianist was outstanding and received regular rounds of applause.
A must-visit spot in York 🫖💛 [The café is lovely, but the queue can be very long, especially during peak hours]. Bettys is the perfect place to enjoy a classic British afternoon tea. The elegant interior, friendly service, and timeless atmosphere make it feel truly special. The scones are warm and fluffy, the cakes are beautifully made, and the tea selection is excellent. Yes, there’s usually a queue — but it’s absolutely worth the wait! If you want an authentic, iconic York experience, Bettys should be at the top of your list. ☕🍰✨
It is difficult to define exactly what it is about Betty's that keeps me coming back for more every time I visit York. If you were to look hard enough you could maybe find other places with slightly better service, or menu options, or an equally eyecatching location. But here at Betty's, for me at least they score consistently well enough in all areas to become greater than the sum of their parts. The menu is extensive and enticing, the servers are always attentive and as for the location, we'll it's York. Need I say more. The shop selling many of their delicious drinks and cakes etc to take away is also a welcome addition to the premises. If your hunger does not require instant gratification and you are prepared to stand in line and wait your turn, you should definitely try to experience this.
Part of York’s Heritage, an afternoon tea experience to remember - book your table now Are those uniforms up for a redesign soon? The art deco tea room is a delight to see, beautifully light and stylish, light and subtle as the notes played by the pianist. Enjoy the delicious finger sandwiches at your hearts content as the waitress will offer a top up’, followed by the beautiful crafted mini pastries and scones, a pure feast for the sweet tooth. Don’t hesitate to request more tea and change selection to enhance the experience.
Fantastic elegant experience at afternoon tea for our group! There is an upstairs space where you can book tea ahead of time, which we did since our group was large. I had thought we would need two separate tables, but they were able to seat us all together. There is a pianist, playing music in the background which added to the ambience. Elegant without being stuffy. I did feel rather like being on a Cunard line ship. Our server, Diane, was wonderful, explaining the different types of tea and noting that one was only available there in that room and not for sale or at the tea room downstairs. There were tiered trays of delicious sandwiches, scones, and pastries—plenty of choices. They were even able to accommodate a vegan in our group with her own tower of beautiful treats.
Can't believe it took me till my final year at uni before trying Bettys, not for their afternoon tea but their dinner menu. Reckon I was served by Esther (per the bill) who ensured I had a smooth dining experience. Foodwise I love the amount of wine added into the Yorkshire Steak Vol-au-vent and the mash potatoes that came with are unlike anything I have ever tasted. Like others said, the quality and portion size of the meal justify the price tag. And ye the pianist made the atmosphere quite nice too. Hope to bring my family/friend here next time.
Very good experience and first time visit. We had a pram and baby and what looked like a limited seating from the outside turnt into a whole new expectation with a lift going to downstairs seating and very friendly staff. Thank you for accommodating us and providing such good service. The tea and scones was lovely as well as the eggs Benedict. Will visit again!
It was crowded when we entered and were lucky to get a table without a reservation (although we were given only an hour before the reserved tables is needed). The staff were all nice and friendly. Would have been nice to be having a proper meal here 😊 we had the afternoon tea set and the items were marvellous.
Wonderful place to take a break from the busy streets of York. Nice, calm and cozy atmosphere, with lovely piano music in the back - not too loud at all. The food and tea was amazing. Our hoast was super sweet. Only «complaint» is that the scones was tiny - the smallest I’ve ever gotten. Really recommend Bettys.
Beautifully presented meal with a good portion size. The burger and fries were tasty, fresh, and cooked just right. The price was reasonable for the quality and portion. The atmosphere of the restaurant made it a great place to sit down and enjoy the meal — definitely one of the best restaurants I’ve visited in York. Highly recommend!
Bettys is one place to visit in York to have a drink from their range of assorted teas which is a really big portion. They do also have a bakery attached alongwith the seated area. It's a warm and welcoming place along with a very cheerful staff. Easy to spot and it's usually a bit crowded. They do have some good food as well.
Went to York for the day with family , had to try Bettys afternoon tea . Unfortunately I wasn’t able to book a table for four so we had to queue outside. A member of staff come outside and check and give you the menu so you know what food they offer and make up ur mind while you are waiting It was around 11:15 am not very busy and it was 20 minutes waiting time but if you go around lunch time you should expect to wait longer !! They welcome you with a warm and friendly smile . We ordered 4 afternoon tea ( one gluten free) It come with tea pot each ( one was decaf tea) it was delicious 😋 £29.95 per person They have clean & elegant toilets downstairs / basement Please note: if you book ur table online then it’s around £45 and you will be sitting in the lovely room on the basement and food is refill however if you go on the day and queue outside then you will be sitting on the ground floor which is more bright & airy but food is not refilled They have a shop too which had lovely biscuits , cakes etc so we bout few to take home , delicious but pricy !!
We had a wonderful and memorable experience at Betty’s in the Belmont room. I love treating my Auntie to afternoon tea here for a yearly tradition. Thank you to Eva for being so warm, friendly and attentive on our special day. And thank you for bearing with me whilst I fussed over my auntie’s gluten free food!! We were in safe hands and the food and drinks were as wonderful as they always are.
Fantastic. Great service, atmosphere, food, everything. You have to go. We will be going again. It gets busy, because it is that good, people are willing to wait to get a table.
Lovely afternoon tea for a friend's 40th. Venue was busy so service was a little slow but otherwise all staff were friendly and approachable.
Just amazing! Incredible experience. I was taken to Betty's for afternoon tea for my birthday. The range of little cakes and sandwiches was incredible and delicious. So much choice. To top it all, about 60 people sang me Happy birthday, accompanied by a pianist! Unforgettable experience!
Our family had a fantastic afternoon tea at Betty Tea Room in York! We queued for 15 minutes at the entrance—totally worth it. Ordered two afternoon tea sets, a burger, a rosite, and a salad. The portions were huge (way beyond expectations) but everything tasted amazing. The elegant decor and professional service (staff in suits even took photos for us!) made it a perfect experience. Highly recommended!
Bettys tea rooms is a very unique place , we had family over from the USA and we did a 2 hour drive to visit York and We did the traditional thing We do with our visitors, we took them to Bettys, food is excellent, staff go over and beyond, short wait to get in but well worth it, staff keep you informed of how long the wait will be ,
Lovely relaxed evening meal. Brilliant service from Esther. Wonderful food and we can’t wait to return. We had the chicken schnitzel, burger and supper salad which were all delicious. Service was really quick and we couldn’t fault anything. Delicious desserts too. The affogato is delightful! We thoroughly enjoyed and can’t wait to return!
Simply wonderful afternoon tea with Prosecco. Worth every penny to make our special anniversary even better. Highly recommend to others. Delicious food (more sandwiches if you want them) a beautiful setting and wonderful piano playing. Staff were so friendly and helpful-we were treated so very well. Loved it!
Lovely setting and ambience. Great service and beautiful food! The scones were to die for. We took a chance and didn’t book but got lucky and were in within 10 minutes.
Would go again if I visit York. The staffs were so respectful and courteous. The ambience was amazing. The food is great!
To tell the truth, I wasn’t prepared to enjoy myself as much as I did. My friends and I reserved to have tea upstairs in March. The live piano was very soothing and a perfect background to the tea. The service was also very good: They were so patient with us switching and asking for more tea. Also, I was impressed with the taste of the entire set! The scones and sandwiches were my favorites. I will definitely go again next time I visit York. Just won’t be eating lunch again before visiting lol
A lovely experience worth waiting outside for to be seated. Very friendly and polite staff. They do have some alternatives if lactose intolerant. You can book for upstairs if you want. Good selection of cakes, treats, drinks and meals.
Wonderful afternoon tea today in the Belmont room. Out waitress was Emily who was so polite and helpful during the whole meal even though it was busy. The food was delicious and we were offered extra sandwiches and tea but we didn't need any extra food as there was plenty. I would certainly recommend coming here to celebrate a special occasion.
We had the afternoon tea experience and were not disappointed. Lovely food, outstanding staff and the most quintessential tea time experience.
We drove up from Portsmouth on the 22nd of August, had dinner that evening, lunch on the 23rd and dinner the same evening especially for our wedding anniversary. As always the staff were friendly, polite and provide a wonderful service. The food is always excellent quality, the shops are always impeccably clean.A visit to york would be incomplete without a visit to Bettys.
Betty’s is a lovely place to eat. It’s very welcoming. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The cake prices are high and the portions are small. As I’m a tourist I ordered a rascal since I’ve never heard of them before. Turned out to be the most comical and lovable cake I’ve ever seen (and I did enjoy it too). I would come again to get the afternoon tea. Be prepared to queue outside and spend inside. It still manages to be a nice experience. And ignore my photo of the rascal as it’s not typical of what the food looks like.
Went for pre booked afternoon tea, the setting is amazing with piano playing in the background, my only bother is I am a fussy eater and not having any other options for sandwiches meant it was wasted, maby offering some simple options if required, but the cakes are out of this world, plenty of different tea and coffee, they even changed my other half tea/coffee for Pepsi as he doesn't have hot drinks with no extra charge
Bettys Tea Room in York is beautifully presented with friendly, helpful staff, but I found it a bit overpriced for what was served. As a big cake lover, I thought the cakes were heavy and overly sweet. I even had to ask for a clean plate to put them on. The mirrors, though likely part of the vintage charm, looked like they needed a polish. It’s a lovely spot that many rave about — At over £50 each just not quite for me.
We had pre booked afternoon tea. We felt that our waitress rushed her 'spiel' and didn't quite understand a query that I had. They did switch the smoked salmon sandwich to chicken which was appreciated. The food was nice but not exceptional. Most people had various drinks and their plates were changed between savoury and sweet course. Unfortunately, we felt invisible and had no plate change and couldn't get the waitresses attention to get more tea until we had nearly finished. When we were ready to go, we couldn't get the waitress for our bill, so asked another waitress. We then waited 15 minutes to pay and had to ask a waiter. We cannot recommend the experience and would not return.
We had to go Betty's whilst in York as its infamous. Didn't wait more than 5mins to get a table at 1pm ish on a week day n Feb. Food was nice although not amazing. Tea was nice but again not amazing. My milkshake wasn't as thick or frothy as I was expecting. Overall we might go again but felt Betty's was perhaps too hyped up. 2 out of 4 ladies toilets werent working. Staff were fabulous though
I had Yorkshire Cream Tea. I liked the clotted cream served for my scones. The pot tea was 'Tea Room Blend'. I liked it but it was not extraordinarily good, just like one I drink at my house. The atmosphere of the cafe is really nice and the workers are friendly. People looked like enjoying themselves a lot. And that also makes the place a lovely place.
Visited Bettys Café Tea Rooms in York. The atmosphere is charming but our experience was mixed. The Americano was average, though the homemade lemonade was lovely. We ordered salmon and prawn sandwiches, which unfortunately arrived soggy. The staff were polite and replaced them quickly, but even the replacements tasted just okay. We were seated downstairs, which felt a bit plain compared to the upstairs dining area. Service was fine overall, but nothing particularly stood out. An okay visit, but not quite the exceptional experience Bettys is famous for.
Nice ambience and very good staff. We arrived for brunch and were able to get seats within 5 minutes. My son has various allergies including garlic. The waitress had no idea what might include garlic, nor did the kitchen, so he ended up choosing fish and chips, which was at best average. I had kedgeree, which was excellent but a relatively small portion, my grandson had soup from the childrens menu, which was good and his mum had eggs. At £110 for three adults and one child, including tea and coffees, I felt this to be poor value for a generally average meal.
