I love their food. Best Thai food I have ever eaten. It's a very small restaurant, maybe only seating about 16-20 persons. But that's partly why I like it, since it's very cozy.
The server is so nice and friendly here. I liked the creamy Tom yum soup and the kao soi with duck
Best thai restaurant in Albany in my opinion. Very small seating area, I'd suggest making a reservation to ensure you're seated, there are about 8 small tables, and no room to wait. They also do takeout, but no delivery.
Tom yum noodle soup was excellent! Not sure why they put potatoes in it, but it was great nonetheless! Red curry was also very good. I'd Definitely recommend this place.
Amazing food. All four of my friends and I got something different and we were all amazed how great it was. Theres not a lot of seating but I'd wait any amount of time for this food. Delicious.
Wonderful neighborhood restaurant, right next to Emack's. Dining outdoors on the front porch is pleasant - only one other table. The food is fantastic, and you will take home a large container of left-overs even after stuffing yourself. Waitstaff is very nice, as well. Try it!
Best Thai food EVER!! The sauce for the spring rolls was creamy mustardy and very unique. The edamame was absolutely perfect, a balance of salt and crunch. The chicken satay, you just have to try for yourself. Good eating people.
After the mixed reviews, we still decided to go ahead and check this place out and I'm glad we did. The atmosphere was very cozy and felt at home. The staff were very welcoming. The menu had a lot of interesting options and the food tasted great too. There was hardly any wait time and we were well attended for. We went half hour prior to closing and they still took great care of us. Would definitely recommend this place.
Love this place. The food is excellent, if a little sweet! But, that is in the name! The meals are light, and even the deep fried stuff is, crunchy and delicious, not greasy. The portions are sharable and the cost is inline with Albany. One of the area's best!
I was warmly greeted and promptly helped by the waitress, in a cozy dining area. I had the curry and it was a lovely complex flavourful dish, with chunky potatoes and veggies and tofu that sopped up the flavor of the curry. Definitely recommend :)
I am a regular customer to Sweet Basil since discovering this amazing restaurant. By far the BEST Thai cuisine in the area. I highly recommend Sweet Basil. The only cons to this establishment is that it tends to take a long time to serve customers; if you are stopping in on a work lunch break call ahead and pre order your meal so you can make it back to your office w/in an hour. This is the only thing this restaurant needs to improve on. The service otherwise is good. Again I will state this is my favorite place to eat out. prices are good and the food is EXCELLENT. My favorite dish: Tofu Soup Fresh Rolls Sweet and Spicy Beef (Thai style) with an Thai Iced Tea or Thai Iced Coffee
Best Thai food I've ever eaten. The spicy mango curry with tofu was heavenly. 😋 I've never eaten something so satisfying. The food is extraordinarily good 😊
Good service. Food was perfect. Garlic Broc. w/ pork. very good brown sauce. Nice dinning room. It was busy, service and kitchen were not fast, not slow.
Some.of the best Thai food in the capital district! I had the sweet basil duck, and I throughly enjoyed it. Everyone I was with also enjoyed their meals. The setting is very intimate. Stop by when you have a chance!
When I lived in Albany, I fell in love with this place. And now when visit upstate, hitting Sweet Basil is a must. The staff are sweet, presentation is great, and the food is plentiful and taste amazing. I always order Siam Chicken and drunken noodles. I live in NYC, food capital of the world, and I still haven't found a Thai restaurant as good as this one. I rarely leave a review, but want people to check this hidden jewel out.
Food was fantastic, had a Panang curry tofu, Massaman curry chicken, and pad thai and they were all great portions and extremely tasty. Restaurant itself is small with nice decor and a homey atmosphere. Would definitely come again.
Out of all the Thai restaurants in the area, Sweet Basil makes the best and most authentic pineapple fried rice. I’ve spent s couple months in Thailand and did cooking classes too. A lot of dishes get “Americanized” but they have some great authentic dishes. Highly recommend!
My favorite Thai food in the Capital District. Very small restaurant, with few tables. Parking is on street, but there is usually space available on side streets. The food is delicious, served hot and fresh. I've never had a bad meal.
The best Thai food I've found in the Capital Region (though their closest competitor delivers). Everything always taste incredibly fresh and the staff is friendly. We typically order takeout though, as the interior dining space is small and almost always full. Our preferred method of ordering, stop in & place a takeout order in person, go get Emack & Bolio's next door (desert before dinner), take Sweet Basil home and enjoy heartily.
I tried about three different things. All the base sauce or curry had different but great flavors. I asked for a Thai pepper, and it was so spicy and flavorful. I ended up slicing it and mixing it in the tom yum coconut broth for a kick. The lunch prices were really fair.
The food was so good, if this restaurant was closer I'd go twice a week.
The food was fantastic. My personal second favorite Thai restaurant in the area. The flavors and quality were all there and I cannot give anything less than five stars for this meal. I try to have a negative in a review. This time around I'd say I waited about ten minutes past the pickup time. With the food being so fantastic and the staff being so friendly, I'd wait this long for my food on all my future visits.
My favorite Thai restaurant!! The first time I came here I was 9 years old and had my first Pad see eww. I loved it and to this day every time I come here I order Pad see eww. 12 years have passed since my first time eating at Sweet basil, I have had pad see eww all around the Saratoga area, the Schenectady area, in the Buffalo NY area, and in NYC and STILL the pad see eww at sweet basil is the best I have ever had. Also the crab rangoons are the best! The atmosphere is beautiful with traditional thai Decor and beautiful paintings on the wall are great. I always love when restaurants of foreign cuisine play their traditional music and they do that here at sweet basil. You feel like you are in Thailand. Sweet basil is my favorite restaurant with the BEST pad see eww and crab Rangoon s. I’m eating here tonight and can’t wait!! The only reason why someone may give this place a bad review is because they don’t have many employees and can be a little slow. But if you want a good meal(which is more important) then sweet basil is your place.
First time in SWEET BASIL and YOU have to go! It’s the cutest little spot in Albany with amazing food. The Massaman Curry with shrimp is to die for. IT WAS DELICIOUS!! The service we received was so amazing and we will definitely be back again. They made us feel welcomed and gave us an amazing experience.
The waited was so super sweet. The food was good. The potatoes in the curry were a little undercooked, but otherwise everything was perfect.
Awesome food in this quaint restaurant. Our family tried 4 different entries and they were all excellent. I loved my mango curry. My youngest son enjoyed his Siam chicken. It was so delicious his older brother was stealing pieces after gobbling down his own curry dish. My husband enjoyed one of the House specialties. I just wish we lived closer—this place would be a regular for us.
One of Albanys best restaurants. The curry is warm and fresh. The spring rolls are the best I have ever had. It’s a very lovely restaurant. Small, clean, fair prices and absolutely PHENOMENAL food. ( parking is on street. )
This place is awesome! My husband and I both agreed it is some of the best Thai food we've ever had. I ordered ginger and mushroom with tofu, and he had pineapple fried rice with beef. We sat outside, which made the experience even better. They have a small porch with a couple of tables and if you can grab one, I highly recommend it! We will definitely be back!
My partner and I have been here maybeee 4 times now👀. It’s a hit, he’s vegetarian, I eat many things and it works. Fresh, tasty, pretty affordable
Worth a ride from anywhere! We happened to be nearby and saw the great reviews. The food was just delicious. Great value in a delightful setting. Small and cozy. The waitress so lovely. The ice cream place next door a must!
Food was amazing, one of the best Thai foods; cooked well and properly glazed. Rating 4/5 for the food. But the place needs more resources, service was lacking due to only one server. And at the beginning the server looked at me as if I will not tip her and I will not order proper food. This attitude should be changed for a healthy customer relationship. Adding another drawback, this place needs to welcome walk in guests not only reservations. Overall had the awesome food.
This is a nice cozy little restaurant with soft Asian music playing in the background. The food was well prepared with just the right amount of seasoning and spice. I ordered the dumplings and red curry chicken with noodles. Excellently prepared meal served very quickly. I can't wait to try something else on the menu.
Been coming here for years. We love it!! Food is fresh tastes amazing. Reasonable prices.
Just had lunch but I have eaten a lot of Thai food, including in Bangkok and the food I had here was delicious. Note that they accurately matched the heat level unlike other places where you ask for medium and there’s not spice at all (Thai food should be a little spicy at least in my opinion) - I’d highly recommend this place if you want tasty Thai food
I really don’t understand why there is no one here!! This place has such good food
What a find! Visiting Albany today, and stopped here for a late lunch. Atmosphere was relaxing, with comfortable seating and soft music. Food was amazing! Pad Thai the best we've ever had. Excellent, fast service. And we only paid $65.00 for 4 lunches and 2 appetizers! Definitely coming again, the next time we're here! Highly Recommend!
A small hole-in-the-wall place that surprised us with the absolutely delicious, sizeable meals for an affordable price! (coming from MA here) We are bookmarking it for the next time we travel through NY!
Authentic and delicious Thai cuisine in a cozy atmosphere. The Tamarind duck was delicious, with a very crispy skin and yet juicy meat. The larb was fresh and had the refreshing punch the dish is known for. The white rice that came with all the dishes was hot and fresh. Excellent portions too! Everything was so good we started eating and forgot to take pictures! The staff is warm and friendly. For great Thai food in Albany, look no further!
Great restaurant, pleasant service and tasty food. We had the chicken satay which comes with a tasty peanut dipping sauce, tom yum soup, and chicken pad thai. Highly recommended! Then pop over to Bolio and Emack's for some dessert/coffee. Will definitely return if back in the area.
Best Thai food I've had in a long time. Food was delicious, great flavor, and great service. Very minimal seating which makes it feel very quiant and intimate. Not ideal for a large party though. Definitely a great date spot, or family of 4 or less A real gem on Delaware!
My grandfather is a regular here so we decided to go with the family. All of the food was incredible and the service was great! I accidentally dropped my left overs on the ground and was disappointed because I was so excited to eat it for lunch the next day. They made me a full takeout order of my meal for me to take with me! Went above and beyond, we will definitely be returning.
Delicious food. Wonderful service. There aren't many tables but if there's a wait they're well worth it. Next time I'm going with a bigger appetite to try more items from their menu. Our dishes were sensational.
Sweet Basil is one of my favorite Albany restaurants. Honestly it should have only 5 star reviews and here is why: It is clean. Like immaculately clean. The tables, floors, everything. The owner is super attentive and cleans up any unused plates or things you are done with right away. It is amazing food. I usually get the crab rangoon, green curry or yellow curry and thai ice tea. The owner is very sweet and attentive. Lunch is often a busy time of you are going around a little before noon to 1pm. The summer seems to be often busier.
My go-to for Thai. We love the Kee Mao and Pad Thai but everything we have tried is fresh and delicious! The restaurant is quite small and cozy, delivery is always prompt and hot.
This is a very unassuming place but the food is off the charts delicious! The waitress was fantastic and even gave me 3 cuttings from her many pothos that she had growing in vases on each table. Highly recommend!!
I like the food at this small Thai restaurant. We got the flood "to-go". We had the lovely Thai curry puffs as a starter. For our main courses, we shared the tamarind duck, which was delicious, the kao soi noodles, which have a nice kick to them, and their eggplant dish. It has too much pork, I thought. I would have liked a lot more eggplant. Their sticky rice and mango was a nice version of the classic dessert. Their iced Thai ice tea is pretty typical. I recommend this place. If you want to eat there, make a reservation. Also despite being told we would have our food in 20 minutes, it look over 45 minutes before we got it. That made for a rather lengthy wait. This is not good.
Ordered takeout. The food was absolutely amazing. Very flavorful And cooked perfectly (no overcooked soggy veggies here!). Probably one of the best thai food takeout experiences we've had.
A small place with a huge menu and delicious food! The veggies in my curry seemed like they were just picked and lightly cooked so they still had some snap to them. Not soggy veggies that have been sitting around. The pad Thai was excellent and red curry was amazing. Tom Kha with rice noodles and shrimp was also a hit. We'll definitely try to get back here when we're in the Albany area.
Best Thai food in the capital region. Always fresh ingredients, great service, and perfectly prepared food. It may take a while for them to get your order because there are only two people working at any given time but the atmosphere is quiet and inviting and the food is definitely worth the wait!
Cozy spot, friendly service, and delicious food. Everything was perfect I wish we visited here sooner! It was on our list for quite some time. The cherry on top is that everything is affordable as well. Both our entrees were around $15 and each appetizer was under $10 and filled us up; resulting in leftovers. Highly recommend
Wonderful little spot. It's pretty small, so make sure to book in advance. The food was delicious, and the service was fantastic and quick. Pad Thai and the Mango Curry were fantastic, and so was the Crab Rangoon. The small downside was that the music was a little too loud, making conversation difficult. Other than that, highly recommended!
This is one of the better Thai restaurants I’ve ever been to. Staff are friendly and the business is family run. Offers very wide variation of Thai food, a long list of appetizers and all the classics of Thai gourmet, including Pad Thai, curries and fried rice, etc. If you want to explore something new I highly recommend Tom kha, the coconut soup and duck fried rice.
Sweet Basil is a very cozy place, serving flavorful Thai cuisine in downtown Albany. I had lunch there and ordered the fried calamari, and Thai fried rice with shrimp. The calamari was interestingly cut. It was not in rings, but in strips, so it was actually more meat than you'd expect, and less of the batter. It was served with a pleasantly sweet dipping sauce. When my entree came out, it was a huge bowl of steaming shrimpy goodness. The rice was perfectly browned, and had a really great smoky flavor you can only get by taking your time. The shrimp was well cooked, but not overcooked and there was enough there to be a dinner. What really made it for me were the little things like how much egg and vegetables were in the rice to balance everything out. I'm kind of ashamed to admit that I ate every grain, but it was that good. The *only* critique I could possibly say is a little more salt on the calamari would have made this a 5 star. That being said, I will definitely be back! Yum.
Always heard great things about this place, and was not disappointed! I have now become a frequent visitor. Small space with street parking (not usually an issue). Food is delicious! Portion size is great for left overs. Do yourself a favor and try the Thai coffee and Thai tea... SO yummy! They do require a minimum purchase for credit cards, and close for an hour during the day for lunch.
Cozy little place with one of the best Thai food offerings I have come across in Albany. Had the Chicken Fingers pad Thai special. Was quite good. Not too greasy, subtle on the flavors and with the right level of spice. Would definitely re-visit this place.
Amazing Thai cuisine! I noticed menu items that I haven't seen in other Thai restaurants. Limited seating so make a reservation. Taking off a star for slowish service and the fact that a couple came in well before closing time (other tables were not reserved) and were turned away.
I went to dine in this restaurant with my UAlbany cohorts. Had green curry which was excellent. I also tasted their Pad Thai but it didn't taste very good. I went to Thailand twice and went to some of the city's iconic restaurants. Sweet Basil, like so many other restaurants in the US, serves American Thai food. It is totally okay because some of their curry dishes are truly excellent.
Excellent customer service very good atmosphere and vibe highly recommend
Overall the food was good. Fried chicken wings were small and could've been had anywhere (what was I expecting ?). Tom Yum soup was good. Andaman seafood was tasty and a medium sized portion with the rice. Asking for spicy, the dish came out with a nice level of heat that made me want to eat it up. Service was a bit slow, but they were busy even on a Sunday night.
First of all, I should mention that Sweet Basil has the best noodle/dollar ratio in Albany! My pad thai was like $13 and large enough to take home an entire lunch for the next day. I ordered it spicy and the flavor was on point! The fresh rolls were also delicious. I can't give 5 stars only because the restaurant was freezing and everyone had their winter coats on. Also, our table was in an awkward spot, close to the front door and right on top of another table. Still, I plan to come back here many more times for the delicious food, generous portions, and great service. Next time I want to try the curry.
I loved this place (with 1 small exception). The place was small but cute and the food was AMAZING. I was surprised they had such an extensive menu for a relatively small place. The only letdown I experienced was when I opened my doggie bag and found my tofu appetizer without the dipping sauce which is a large component of the dish. I would definitely go back to this restaurant and look forward to it!
I went early one evening and there was only one staff person to wait on all the tables, so as it got busy the service became slower and slower for everyone. I ordered the green curry with pork and it was fabulous! It was a large serving and I had to abandon it because after being at the restaurant for an hour and a half I had to leave and the staff was nowhere in sight for about 10 minutes. I stood at the counter, finally paid my bill and was able to leave. If you have no concerns about time, this could be a really tasty treat!
A nice spot with good Thai. I got the pad see ew with chicken and the ingredients were good quality. I just wish they used the wider noodles that are typically used for that dish. Nonetheless it’s a good spot and I’ll certainly be back
Awesome, quaint & cozy spot off Delaware Ave- great vegan options and vibrant Asian dishes. I loved the flavor of the Kao Soi noodle, I recommend ordering noodles over the seafood or meat (my boyfriend didn’t love the duck as much as my noodles) Small space with room for about 10 -15 dining customers at a time. No alcohol is served here- better to know this ahead of time! Great spot
Previous reviews were quite positive; but lately, my orders have been mostly rice, and very little of the main dish that was ordered. Today, I paid more than $22.00 for mostly rice, two small shrimp, and one bit of beef or pork?
Lovely people, and all the fried appetizers are delicious, but the noodle dishes and curries really leave something to be desired. Ingredients are barely chopped so portioning is difficult when you’re sharing, and the noodles tend to be very undersauced and stuck together. I really want to like this place, but wish they’d prepare their entrees with a bit more care.
I will start with the negatives in hopes of the owner seeing this and taking action. Their hours of operation need to be updated so that people don't drive there and find them closed when it clearly says they should be open. The lady server whose also behind the counter ( not sure about the name) is RUDE! Please fix your attitude; customers pay for their meals and come for a reason, you should be welcoming its only good for your business. The male server is very pleasant tho. Positives- food is absolutely deeeeeeeelish!! and you will have leftovers to take home too! I am giving this place another try this Friday and will update if there's any improvement as this visit will determine whether I am a loyal customer or will be running away!
When I came in, they were closing for a minute to take a break so I ordered Kee Mao to go. Which sucks since the Kee Mao tasted totally unfinished and missed one of the main ingredients: it's spice. I'm sure it's a good restaurant but my food has no flavour and no spice
Second time we've been here. As usual the shrimp rolls, coconut soup and crab cakes were awesome. I was hesitate to order the seafood combination....I asked what seafood is in it. She said Shrimp, squid, mussels and scallops. The price for the combo was $25. We ordered 2 different seafood combo entrees. Neither had shrimp. They brought us 2 each but in my sauce. I definitely expected a little more actual seafood and our other entree had one scallop. She didn't care. Make your own choice.
Absolutely Disgusting Experience The staff at this restaurant is extremely rude and blantantly racist. So shook to see them pass racist comments. Also, if you order less food, they will make a point to make you feel bad. Not to forget, they WILL harass you to tip them, even if you are single person, ordering single dish and don’t want to tip.
I decided to go for dinner at Sweet Basil restaurant last night after I read good reviews about it.But I found them totally opposite and had a very bad experience for the first time in my life. We six people including 3 kids were there for food and we took like 5-10 min to go over their Menu to decide the type of food we wanted to, but staff ( a woman) came up to us as soon as we sat in the chairs and asked us to place a order very quickly in a rude manner. Very impolitely. After we finished our dinner, she ( the same woman, very rude) gave me a bill where she added $12 tip by herself in the bill. However I signed the bill without arguing , I know the tip is something that customer can opt for. I never see any restaurant where customer can expect a bill with set up tip amount. Very poorly served place I ever see.
Very disappointing experience tonight. The flavors are on point however both seafood combination dishes we ordered had very little seafood. 1 scallop, 2 Mussels, and no shrimp. The crab cakes and Thai spring rolls were out of this world.
Me and a friend walked in at 8:48 Friday night, we just got to Albany from West Point and we were told we can't eat there since it's almost 9:30 we still had over 40 minutes until closing time and were refused to be seated. We were told to order takeout. Decided to get one drunken noodle to share , it came out in 10 mins. Still there was 30 minutes on the clock and we were told that we couldn't sit there and eat. The food is not that great compared to other Thai places and the service is horrible. Stay away if you are a tired traveler going here to look for some hospitality. They should change their hours to 8:45 if they don't want any customers to come in at that time.
Absolutely terrible customer service. Very rude, not knowledgeable of their menu or ingredients. I had called with a question about an entree for my fiance that has allergies. The woman acted as though she didn't care of his allergies, nor customer care. When asking about fish sauce she said "whatever it is". Just based of of my belief conversation I will not ever go to this restaraunt nor recommend it. I have managed restaurants in the past, this is NOT how a business should conduct themselves.
Food is good but service is poor. Forcefully asking someone to put over gratuity rate is not acceptable. Tip is payed per service, not per your choice. You can raise food price if you want more money for same food & service.
I never leave reviews and tend to give benefit of the doubt but I felt obligated after how bad this was. I ordered the pad kee mao and it was oily, had absolutely 0 spice, few vegetables (only 1 tiny cherry tomato), and barely any flavor. What little flavor it did have tasted like oyster sauce and carrots which shouldn't even be in kee mao in the first place. I couldn't finish it. Super disappointing after seeing all of the good reviews for this place.
I usually do not write reviews but I feel compelled to express my experience at this restaurant. A person, who identified himself as the restaurant owner, was very rude and disrespectful. I ordered food for pickup and when I received it at home and open the container, it was not what i wanted and not what we had talked about on the phone. I called the restaurant and expressed that to him and proposed some type of credit because it was not edible to me as is. He accused me of wanting to eat the food and wanting the credit also. He was a very rude and disrespectful person. I eventually hung the phone up without anything being resolved. I ended up having to drain the soup and preparing my own broth so I didn't waste the seafood. It was the worst customer service I had ever encounter. Stay away from this place.
This restaurant has the most horrible customer service ever I ordered my food at 2:50 it’s 3:25 and they’re still telling me that I need to wait 10 minutes. When I come the door is locked I had to wait for someone to open the door sounds like they just getting started with my food this is absolutely insane I don’t recommend this restaurant to anyone I ordered just before my lunch break. Thinking I’ll have it for my lunch break however I won’t receive my food for lunch. Everything was already paid for 30 minutes ago. Run the cameras somebody should be in charge of this place. May 28, 2024
Disaster experience and will not come back: 1)not seemingly to welcome patronizing customer by leaving them waiting while multiple tables have been cleaned up and fully set (not reserved) 2) eating food and found a metal staple wrapped with noodle while in mouth, this is safety issue. No exaggeration but have lost my trust for good. Good luck.
If there was a zero. I would have given zeros. The most annoying sever with no empathy. I ordered food and people came after me got their food and left before I got my order. No way to get updates on my food. When I discussed that with the server she told us we can have the food for free in the most condescending way you can imagine. We left immediately and I swear to god not only I am not setting a foot here again. I will make sure everyone I know does the same.
Walked in and we were very excited to order take out here as this was our first time. We waited 15 minutes before we could place our order. Due to the woman running the register and fixing the food! Finally ordered the food and the food came out quickly! As we were leaving I asked for two sets of chop sticks and the woman said they ran out and handed me one set. Get back to my friend's house and open the food what a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! The pineapple fried rice looked like it was not flavorful and I was correct! No season really, the presentation was horrible and my appetizers were dry! I will never give them another opportunity for me to waste another $35 again!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND EAT ELSEWHERE!!
