The Big Texan Steak Ranch is a fun, touristy spot known for its Texas atmosphere and the 72oz steak challenge. While some find the food good but not spectacular, the overall experience and large portions are a draw. Expect a lively, busy environment and friendly staff.

You can’t miss a big steak on your way through Amarillo. It’s truly a most! The steak was incredibly delicious, and the Mac 'n cheese was a 10/10. The ambiance was over-the-top, with a wild west vibe that was on point. We scored a table with a 10-minute wait thanks to our online reservation, and we spent the time browsing the store and sipping on a cold beer. If you don't book ahead, be prepared for a 45-minute wait. It was so good, we came back the next morning for steak and eggs for breakfast that was spectacular. Highly recommend!
Oh my God This place is amazing, wonderful. We had a perfect time there. If you are looking for something very Texan this is the place. Good is one of the most delicious that I had ever! The place had a perfect atmosphere, with very generous waitress and very friendly. The beer 🍺 was incredible. I would have so much for seeing about The Big Texan. In summary You must go there and see for yourself. Thank you everyone there.
FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE! There is not enough space to truly detail what a great time we had at The Big Texan. 100% worth a stop should you find yourself anywhere near Amarillo. The esthetic is remarkable, the amount of decoration and props and the overall feel of the place is incredible. The staff are extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The entertainment was wonderful. The food was very delicious and there are multiple, multiple options and choices to make. Not enough good things can be said, 10/10 worth the stop!
This place is really fun. We had a party of 10, including 4 kids. Everybody loved their meals and had a nice time at the gift shop, simulated shooting range, and game area. We would like to have stopped at the ice cream shop area or for cookies and cake, but nobody had room after dinner. We were in-route to Santa Fe from Houston, and this was the perfect stop after a long drive!
Took a shot at the 72oz steak challenge at Big Texan Steak Ranch with a friend and let’s just say… we gave it our best effort. Unfortunately, we failed. No free steak for us. That said, it was an awesome experience. The atmosphere is fun and over the top Texas, and the whole place has a great energy, especially when someone attempts the challenge. The steak itself was actually really good just massive. I was eating leftovers for the next three days. Even if you don’t take on the challenge, it’s worth stopping in just for the experience.
Service, the food, the atmosphere, it all hits different worth coming out And seeing for yourself and I'm on vacation and I wish I can come back like next week And I know I can't make that happen, but that's what this place does to you makes you want to come back. Plenty of stuff to see awesome gift shop highly recommend going. Seeing how big that rattlesnake is never seen one. That huge, at least that close and for what I understand there's a hotel literally next door if you can just make this a vacation destination, it's worth it.
Nothing like a Texas sunset. A true Route 66 experience and a must-stop in Amarillo. The Big Texan is fun, lively, and full of personality from the moment you walk in. The Western theme, music, and energy make it more than just a restaurant—it’s an attraction. Portions are generous, the steaks are flavorful and cooked just right, and the sides are classic and satisfying. Watching the famous 72-ounce steak challenge adds to the excitement, even if you’re just cheering from the sidelines. Service was friendly and efficient despite how busy it was. Whether you’re here for the food, the atmosphere, or the nostalgia, this place delivers on all of it.
Ookay first off I cannot express how hospitable the staff was. Our waiter was James and he gave us excellent recommendations. There's an amazing souvenir shop and a huge live rattle snake 🐍 fun games. The only flaw i had was my chicken fried steak was entirely too salty l I couldn't eat it , also it was very thin. But my sides the we're phenomenal and I nibbled off of my hubby's streak plate that was literally perfection on a plate !!!! Overall yall must stop here !!! Oooooh and they have semi truck parking.
Lots of Fun! We loved the nostalgia of the Old West. April made our customer service experience exceptional! She was a breath of fresh country air and made us feel like family coming to visit. She was attentive, very sweet and accommodating. Our food was delicious and the atmosphere was fun & entertaining. Traveling table musicians and updates on the 72 oz Steak participants made it dinner and a show. All guest’s drinks come in a souvenir plastic cup you keep for free and kids meals come in a straw cowboy hats the kids get to keep for free. This is a great place to stop and eat while in Amarillo. They serve breakfast, lunch & dinner!
Stopped here on my road trip to Arizona and I’m so happy that I did! The food was awesome. I got the beef tips and fried okra. The beef was great! The mash potatoes were on point. The vibes were immaculate! There was a little cowboys mariachi band walking around playing their guitars and singing. Kk da awkward, but it set a dope vibe.
This was my first visit here and it won't be my last. I stayed in the hotel and had breakfast at the steakhouse before heading off on the rest of my trip. First the hotel. Check in was quick, convenient, and I didn't have to stop at the front desk by utilizing keyless self check in. The room was clean, comfortable, and decorated with a wild west flare. The perfect room for a trip layover. Now the steakhouse. The building is large and has plenty to look at. I didn't get to explore the whole facility which has me regretful but excited for my next visit. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was amazing! It definitely reflects their dedication to a well cooked, full of flavor, perfectly cooked steak. The prices were more than fair for the quantity and quality you get. They offer an electronic option to pay your bill so there is no standing at a register or handing your card to a server which is great. I can't wait to visit again.
This place is a roadside classic. If you are in Amarillo, you have to check this place out at least once. Its not a steakhouse, its not a place that you go for a the best steak you have ever had, its a place that you go for the fun experience. When you think of Route 66 and the kitchy fun things along the way, this is a shining star. From the shooting gallery, to the tableside singing, the 72oz steak challenge, the fun cocktails, this is what Americana vacation is all about.
I've been wanting to come here for several years because I passed through in my semi fairly often. They actually have truck parking in the back and quite a bit of it! My steak was perfection and the atmosphere was great there were three guys trying to eat the 72 oz at the top table in front.. one finished his the other had his potato left and there was a third one still working on it when I left! Lots of stuff to do here such as a shooting gallery a little country store a dessert bar candy stand and just all kinds of cute things.
Everything was delicious and portion sizes are what you would expect... huge! The place was very busy, but we were seated quickly with no wait. The staff was attentive and friendly. I would highly recommend trying their chicken fried chicken. I had a strawberry shortcake to go and it was huge and so good (pic attached). Just to understand the size, the container is a large food container, and it took up the whole thing! This taste like scratch cooking and fresh ingredients. Nothing disappointed in this restaurant. Somone even tried the 72oz steak challenge when we were eating. I didn't stay long enough to see if he beat the challenge, but it was exciting for everyone and they had him on a platform in the middle of the room with the countdown clock. I was so impressed with the food that I even went back the next morning and tried the French toast plate. It was just as good as the dinner. Thanks for a wonderful experience Big Texan!
Texas BBQ. Variety of BBQ and steak/chicken items. Great rolls served up when you are seated. Jalapeño on every plate we ordered. We had brisket sandwiches, i added grilled jalapeños to mine. Great food, lots of taxidermy to check out, gift shop. Drinks looked great, but i was the DD so had water.
Awesome place to visit!! It’s got its own section with lots of places. The restaurant has so many stuff to do in there. They have gift shops games dessert shop etc. very huge place. We made a reservation when we went. We drove to Dallas. So it was a pit stop for lunch. Kids had its of fun! Our waitress was super nice. She explained the menu to us. Our food was sooo good. Loved everything we ordered. There was a small play place for the doggies. So our dog had fun playing there. Definitely recommend this place to anyone.
This was a nice place to visit traveling across country. My burger was cooked well done. It was bloody rare. I had to send it back and I never do that. By the time the new burger got to the table, my spouse was finished. Oh well, such is life. Atmosphere was great. Staff were friendly. Very disappointing that the crush penny machine was out of order.
Very busy so be patient with the staff! The steak was one of the best that I’ve had, seasoned well and cooked to order. Wife had the chicken and it also was very good. We had the carrot cake and are still eating it! Portions are very large. We stayed at the Big Texan Hotel and it was really cool decor reminded me of the ranch house I use to live in on the ranch! Had breakfast, the breakfast bowl which my wife and I shared, highly recommend having.
A MUST VISIT! This place is worth ALL the hype. If you are in the area or could be, GO! The atmosphere is fun and is as Texas as it gets! I used to live in DFW area and visit the stockyards all the time and this place is up there with the cowboy vibes. This is also better food than anything I’ve had out there. The atmosphere is so fun, all dinner long at least one if not two people were trying the 72oz’r challenge. It is so fun to watch and cheer them on. The steak and food is beyond fantastic! Huge delicious portions of everything. Wait staff is all amazing and friendly. This place is what it’s all about. Every restaurant steakhouse or not should take a que from the playbook of Big Texan on how to run a restaurant. Will DEFINITELY return!
What a hoot. Our server Bill was great. The steak was excellent. We ordered the 38oz Ribeye and split it. The Caesar Salad was cold and crisp, baked potato was soft and hot and cowboy beans were very tasty. Family style seating, so get ready to mingle. The hostess was fantastic and was able to seat us out of way with our dog. Big thanks for that. Stop by the front table and encourage the patrons going for the 72oz steak and meal. They need all the encouragement they can get
This was my first time eating here and my girl.Second time and the food was delicious. Surprisingly, there was no availability online, so we had to walk in and make reservations, which you can also do walk ins and we were surprised as we were told one hour, but got served before that. Depending on the group of people you are with, it will benefit you. If you either by a pitcher or a tower, if you are drinking beer. The food was delicious as we both had a t bone stake and it was well served, and we also got to view two people, which only one made it to eat the 72 ounce steak. The dessert was amazing and a must try at the end. If you have enough room. We ended up going back for breakfast. The next day and it was well worth it, and we also got what was half a liter of mimosa, and let me just tell you they are strong. Overall, the price, it's worth the experience. If you don't mind paying a little more compared to roadhouse, but believe me, you will not be disappointed.
While our steaks were cooked as ordered, the cut and seasoning could have been a bit better. Had too much fat and not enough seasoning for our taste. The sides were good but lacked enough seasoning. The rolls were spot on and absolutely delicious! Size portions are very large. You will not walk away hungry! The store has a lot of souvenirs to offer. Something for everyone! The employees were engaging and very nice. Overall a fun experience.
Fun family restaurant. Good service in the restaurant proper, but not the bar area... The one gal tending the bar left when I arrived. There were about a dozen people in the bar area and no one to serve them... I waited 5 minutes for someone to return, they did not. So I went to the main restaurant for lunch. Good Sweet Tea, sweet server's (treat them kindly), and large open parking in the back for trucks and RVs
Drove 5 1/2 hours from Dallas to visit the place. Really wish I could have tried the 72oz but without the 1 hour challenge its a splurge of 200.00 , so I passed. I did get the 10oz prime rib with coleslaw n potato salad. The slaw had pineapple in it! I dared myself to taste it. ..Highly recommend for my slaw lovers. It was refreshing and tasty. For being Texan, the potato salad was a miss, salty n mush. No texture at all. My partner picked the 16oz ribeye ..yummy! His mac n cheese was a no with its dry n hard to swallow shells. He really enjoyed the cheesy potatoes, they didn't skimp in cheesy! I was hoping for a grand slam finish with my cherry cheesecake but it came iut frozen. I asked if I could get one not frozen and was told nothing was thawed. So we boxed n took the cheesecake for a late snack. Overall it was worth the bonding time and company. Id give it a yes on returning to try other menu items.
The three of us ordered the same steak platters that came with two sides. Although one person ordered medium rare, another ordered medium well, and I ordered a medium, they all came out cooked exactly the same. That said, steaks were still tasty and tender. The rolls were served warm and very good and the sides were decent. It was a good dining experience overall.
Whole family loved it. We were headed to colorado and stopped in Amarillo to experience The Big Texan. We made reservation which prevented a 1.5 hour wait. We had a fantastic waitress who helped the kids get what they wanted. I am used to Austin restaurant prices for steaks and CFS. Prices were on par non-steakhouse restaurants but sizing was bigger than we would normally order. Quality met my expectation for the type of place this is especially as busy as it was. Their beers were decent - $10 for the (22?)oz large which was reasonable. Their whiskey selection was impressive but unsure of pricing. Kids also got ribs but they were dried out and tough. This place was VERY BUSY for a sunday night. There was very little room at the shooting gallery or to walk to the bar in the back and the parking lot was full. Im glad we went and the family talked about it the rest of the trip. We will go back if we are ever in Amarillo.
The atmosphere is really neat. Food was ok. I ordered a medium rare steak and got a well done steak. Tiny baked potatoes. If you order loaded you put everything on it yourself. Which isn’t a big deal. Just use to how Texas Roadhouse works. If I’m ever in town again with someone that hasn’t gone I’ll stop by.
If you are Big Hungry I would recommend you try this Big Texan steak ranch and brewery! It is very loud, lively and touristy with a lot to see. It was nice checking out the gift shop as there was quite a wait to get seated. If you have a fear of snakes I recommend you don’t go to the back of the gift shop! A big and very real Rattler was in a class aquarium. I had a big steak, Not a 72 ounce big steak but still big. I saw a few people complete that challenge and I was very impressed because they did not have Heavy set Statures at all. I don’t know where they put it all away. Since their challenge was live streamed with overhead cameras there definitely was no funny business. They won that challenge fair and square. I really enjoyed the fresh warm buns and the Carrot cake was realllllllly good! Will definitely go back hopefully at a less busy time. Our waitress was friendly enough but had to run around like a chicken with its head cut off because it was super busy. As fun and lively as the atmosphere is, we were sat at a big long table with perfect strangers. Luckily our table mates were good courteous people if we were sat with loud rude people it would have been a different experience all together.
I'm not gonna lie, I came to try the 72oz challenge. I try to avoid carbs, so they let me sub the potato for a second salad. There was another man that just started the challenge before me, so I was extra motivated to do it with someone else. When it came out, it ws definitely a monster steak. My only complaint is that it was very chewy. I understand, it's a sirloin, but it was tough. I eat 3-4 lbs of beef every day (I'm on a carnivore diet) and have no issues doing so. Even very fatty and gristley meat is fine with me. The sirloin they serve you for the challenge seemed like very dense and tough fibrous meat. I'm not complaining, it was very tasty and I had a blast doing the challenge but if the steak were a ribeye or at least had more fat, I could've gotten it down faster. I simply ran out of time from chewing. I even tried tearing everything into tiny bites by hand to make them easier to chew. The guy that started before me said he was simply full and gave up. If I had more time I would've been fine, I simply couldn't chew it that fast. The salad was simple lettuce, the shrimp were butterflied and fried (I scraped the breading off) and I didn't try the roll. There was no reason to force the carbs if I couldn't finish the steak in time. During the challenge, people came up to get pictures like we were famous. That was kind of interesting. After the challenge, I received a t-shirt that said I tried, I was able to keep the boot cup you drink from, and I got a napkin as a souvenir. Overall, it was a great experience and I really enjoyed it. Next time I visit, I'll get the 36oz ribeye instead. I'm sure it'll be a better flavor and experience, since I crave higher fat content. I accidentally left my jacket on a chair at the contestant table and Holly Hooper was more than gracious and sent it to me. The customer service here is top notch. I don't frequently come to this part of Texas, but I'll absolutely visit again when I do. I could spend hours (I actually did on this visit) and still not get bored. It's a very fun place to visit and to get a break from the road.
A little confusion on where to get in line for seating and staff just let us stand there instead of giving direction. Once we got to the correct line, we were seat quickly. Our server was great and they all made the atmosphere fun and lively. Not being from the area, I wasn't expecting my steak to be cooked plain in the grill. It was cooked correctly just not seasoned. Loved the variety of sides! Would definitely repeat coming here if ever in the area again!
We definitely went here for the hype! As tourists, we couldn’t miss this famous Amarillo landmark. I don’t think many locals eat here often, but it’s one of those iconic spots you just have to experience at least once. We started with fried pickles, which were absolutely delicious. I also tried the spicy mango margarita, but it was way too sweet and syrupy for my taste. For dinner, we ordered two 12-oz Fort Worth cuts with sides, one with broccoli and mashed potatoes, and the other with fried okra and corn. The steaks (medium and medium-well) were just average, nothing extraordinary. The steaks were flavorful but had more fatty and chewy portions than I’d prefer. The fried okra and mashed potatoes were solid 10/10! What really made the visit memorable was the atmosphere. We even got to watch someone attempt the famous 72-oz steak challenge, which was so fun to see. Our waitress, April, was very friendly, attentive, and polite. Overall, the food itself wasn’t anything special, but the experience and vibe make it worth visiting at least once. This isn’t your typical steakhouse, it’s a landmark with a fun, lively atmosphere you won’t forget. Gift shop is nice and I bought some souvenirs.
I had heard that this place was somewhat of a tourist attraction, but I still wanted to try it out to see what it had to offer. I want to start by saying that the service was absolutely wonderful, our server was attentive, kind, and truly made us feel welcome. That said, the overall atmosphere was a bit challenging for us. There was a strong scent in the air that was difficult to ignore, and the seating arrangement was not very comfortable, especially for those who value personal space. While there are a few booths for individual parties, most of the seating consists of long, shared tables meant to maximize capacity. This setup reminded us of cafeteria-style seating, which made it difficult to feel relaxed or enjoy any sense of privacy. Unfortunately, we were seated very close to another couple who were having a very personal and emotional conversation, which further highlighted the lack of separation between guests. If privacy is important to you, this is something to keep in mind when visiting. The food was also a bit disappointing. Although we understood that this is a popular tourist spot, we were hoping for a more flavorful experience. I ordered the spicy chicken quesadilla, but it lacked both spice and seasoning, and the main flavor that came through was the grease from the cheese. Interestingly, the most memorable part of our visit ended up being the large rattlesnake in the gift shop, which certainly made the experience unique.
We were excited to visit the restaurant and when we walked in and was seated right away and seeing the atmosphere we were happy until it came time to get waited on. We kept getting told our waitress would be with us and kept getting told without service. Then waitress showed up and told another waitress she didnt want to wait on us because she had other things to do so we had to wait more, finally a different waitress waited on us and food was good and plates were well served. Prices match the plates. Did watch the 72oz steak challenge. Wish experience could have been better especially driving so far just to see the hype..
Update: Returned to this fine establishment and everything was the opposite of the first time we came which was the month prior. The server wasn’t very friendly, and our steaks weren’t juicy, and they were lukewarm, and burnt on the outside. Understandable they had a new cook on the grill, but our expectations were high considering how fantastic it was the month before. We live in CA so we won’t be coming back anytime soon. If we ever do, and it is better, we will update our update. Original: Probably one of the best Ribeyes I’ve ever had! Nice crust, rendered fat, seasoned properly, and perfect cook temp. Excellent rolls and sides. Loved the fried okra. April was our server and she was awesome! We loved her! This place has a very lively atmosphere and vibe. You can watch the competitors in the 72oz steak challenge while you eat.
I was looking forward to trying out this place especially after seeing it enjoyed from afar by others. Life finally took me to Texas and I made sure this place was on the route taken. I came away from it, like many do after meeting their hero's, very disappointed. We walked in, no reservations and were sat right away, in the nick of time too, as the crowd came shortly after. We ordered a couple of apps, the onion rings and a half-order of the Smothered Barbeque Texas Fries. The onion rings were okay, they looked way better than they tasted, way too much breading that fell off. The fries stole the show. They had a weird flavor when trying the individual components, together, as a dish, they were probably the best fries we've ever had. As for the main course, the steaks, that's where the problems begin. Actually the steaks weren't the problem, it was the person/people, running the grill. I got the 32oz Double Duke, ordered medium. It was butterflied, but the temperature was all over the place. Some parts were next to rare, other parts, very well done. My guest ordered the double filet, which was 2-8oz fillets, again, ordered medium. To say they came out still mooing would be an understatement. The outside was very well done, but the inside was raw. We told the server about this, she was very understanding and took it back to the kitchen to continue cooking. 20 or so minutes later, not exaggerating, they were brought back. One was super well done, the other, wasn't even touched, still extremely rare. We gave up, told the server again and it was removed from the bill. This turned into a very disappointed experience, that I don't wish upon others. A steakhouse that can't cook steak. Don't waste your time or money, many, much better options, are around.
