Sam Hill is cozy with a great menu. We came specifically for brunch and it was enjoyable. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. We’ll bring a group back to check it out during the summer where the open patio is sure to be a good time. Try the tomato pies!
Stopped for lunch in August for lunch. It was easy to get seated not many people here. I got the smash hamburger with fried potato chips. The hamburger was delicious but the fried chips were way to salty. I love salt. You might want to substitute for sweet potato fries or salad for an upcharge. Looks like there is an outdoor patio and chairs on the lawn. Looks like they have entertainment outside on the lawn which might be fun in the warmer weather. I would stop again if in the area.
We got salads and smash burgers . Smash burgers were super good. Super good. We, got the expresso martinis. Waitstaff was super courteous and helpful. Seemed very knowledgeable.
Great Happy Hour, nice staff, fun atmosphere. I love Culvers across the street, but I can’t believe they can compete with Sam Hill since the food/prices are on par but the atmosphere is way better. I’ll keep this place in mind if I need a party space…
This place was great. Highly recommended. Vegetarian friendly, wheelchair accessible, excellent food, good beer list.
Great food and service! Came here with about 10 people, had Christian as our waiter and he was excellent. Plenty of parking. We had the tomato pies (to die for), The Hot Brown (beautiful open faced sandwich), toasted ravioli, shrimp and grits with fresh big shrimp, grits were seasoned well, and the Creekside Cobb which was so good with the goat cheese. We would definitely come back for the food and the sit at the bar for cocktails. The bar is nice!
First time here and for my 40th. The customer service was outstanding. Food was absolutely delicious. The place is a vibe. Definitely looking forward to coming back. Missing the burger picture but I ate it so fast I didn’t even take a picture.
Sam Hill has a cool, modern atmosphere, but it was a bit empty when I visited. Everything felt fresh and new, and I can tell they put a lot of effort into the design. They have a nice outdoor space that will be perfect for summer dining. The food was good, and they had a nice whiskey selection. I'm excited to try them out again when it's warmer and I can enjoy the patio. Went back for a second visit and sat outside, great outdoor space. Highly recommend the smash burger. It's my favorite burger in all of Ann Arbor!
This place is awesome. We came on a rainy day so we didn’t get to see the outside, but sounds like it will be cool. The food was great- I recommend the mini pasties and the tomato pies! Service was excellent! We were greeted at the door and our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend! :)
It was our first visit to Sam Hill. Staff was very friendly. Service and food were very good
We love Joe behind the bar!!! Food and drinks were excellent !!! Service was the best I’ve had in Ann Arbor!
Love what they've done with the place. Food was excellent and fairly priced. Tons of seating, and great views from the patio. Can't wait to see when they've got all the outdoor bits up and running.
We had a really good experience when we visited Sam Hill for the first time recently. Nice variety of unique menu choices, including mini pasties and cauliflower enchiladas (pictured). Everyone was able to find something they wanted to try and we all liked what we got. I enjoyed the blues music that was playing and glad that it wasn't so loud that I couldn't hear the other people at my table. Prices were responsible, too.
First time coming here they are so nice the place is beautiful. We ordered broiled oysters and there fries amazing no complaints , for are dinner I ordered the hot brown and he ordered the short rib dinner .
We are so happy we found this place. We can't wait to come back and sit in the outside patio. Service, food, and atmosphere were fantastic.
Came here for lunch/brunch. The food came out fast. I had the crab cake benny and it was delicious. The bourbon cake was good. Service was friendly. Looking forward to going again!
Excellent food and drink at reasonable prices! Very family friendly. Would definitely get the tomato pies and boudin balls again.
We came to Sam Hill for a lunch with coworkers on a cold and icy Tuesday. Graham was our most excellent host! The Hot Brown (as recommended by Graham) was the perfect dish for the weather! I would highly recommend coming and trying out the tasty menu! I know I’ll be back again for weekend brunch!
Absolutely family-friendly yard, kids love playing the games, and even making new friends. Food has been great every time. The menu is slightly limited for guests in the yard, but the atmosphere is awesome.
The three of us, each, remarked, independently, that the food was exceptionally good! Love the atmosphere here, especially In the afternoons and evenings when the fire pits are lit on the deck and patrons are enjoying themselves outside.
Brunch is cheaper than the 3-course dinner offered for the Ann Arbor Restaurant Week. Crab Cake Benny looked really delicious.
my boyfriend is from the UP and was so excited to try the pasties here. He said they were amazing and would be a fan favorite in the UP!
We celebrated a baptism for our son on Sunday November 23, 2025. We reserved a room for up to 30 people, and it was the best choice for our party. The restaurant dedicated two servers, named Chance and Rachel, who worked full time to help us enjoy the dining experience. Chance and Rachel went above and beyond to provide excellent customer service. We were able to order from the full menu and bar as well. While there was a required minimum to spend to hold the room ($750), it was achievable to me with a party size of 20 or more if guests order appetizers, drinks, or dessert. Given the importance of the event, the privacy of our room combined with the emphasis on customer service made the dining experience very enjoyable. Several guests were very impressed and mentioned how nice the restaurant was given our party size. I prefer this dining experience to several tables pushed together at any other restaurant with servers who were already spread too thin. One final point; this restaurant uses a 3rd party booking service that communicates promptly when you email, but infrequently answers the phone or returns calls. I made 3 calls that were never returned, but received an email back within 24 hours.
First time here. Staff and service were fantastic, even late at night. We got the mini pasties and burgers. The pasties hit a spot thats hard to describe in words. Flakey, meaty yet light, and oh so gravy-ful. Everyone in the family got a burger. The onion fondue burger was hands down, the best burger I've ever had. Everyone agrees, the foods phenomenal! We'll be regulars!
We recently had a gathering of family & friends at Sam Hill after my dad's funeral on January 8th. When my cousin called & left a message to make arrangements she received a call back soon after from Johnathon Tipton even though he was on vacation. The room was really nice and the server was fantastic! She was especially patient with my mom who has dementia and a garlic allergy. With her help my mom was able to help her pick out a meal she really enjoyed. I look forward to dining at Sam Hill again!
From the start we arrived to waters prepared on our table for our reservation. Ordered some cocktails and they were all perfect from the ingredients to how theyre crafted and the carefully selected glasses. I had the peppercorn burger with the onion fondue added and it was incredible. I will definitely be back!
We went to Sam Hill’s for the first time last night and had a fabulous time. Our server, Aoife, went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. I have an allergy to garlic and she made sure I had many options to choose. The Icelandic cod was outstanding. After our meal we went outside, sat round a fire pit, and listened to a wonderful band. It was an enjoyable evening. I can’t wait to return. I highly recommend Sam Hill Restaurant.
Very nice and relaxed. They had truly some of the best cooked steak I've ever had. Too many places cook it a bit longer than what you request, but Sam Hills cooked it perfectly! Plus their cherry aioli is a must try!
My first time at Sam Hill and it was a good one! Food was delicious and the servers as well as all staff were very kind, professional, helpful, and very attentive checking often for drink refills or if we needed anything. It was hard to decide what to pick as there were so many yummy options. We’ll be back!
Stopped in randomly for a late lunch. Sat at the bar and had Joe serve us. He was amazing! Friendly, personal recommendations, just the right amount of engagement at the right times. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend the fondue burger, best I’ve ever had!!!!
Fish tacos were good, but pretty bland. Crab cakes were quite tasty. Staff was very friendly, attentive and accommodating. Awesome outside area during good weather and a really good place to watch a sporting event and have some good food.
Such a cool place with lots of fun things to do. The nitro brew beer on tap had me in heaven. The buffalo chicken sandwich has me missing it already and the home made caramelized onion dip left an impression on my pallet I will never get anywhere else... this place is amazing
This was our first time trying out this restaurant. The food and price was awesome. Watching football and having drinks was great. They also have an outside area where you can play different games like corn hole which is very cool. I highly recommend this restaurant and we will be back soon
Good American Classic Standards of hot food choices: Potter Roast, Chicken Fried Steak, Beef Steak Tips and Large Chicken Pot Pies. Really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere
Party of six celebrated my daughter’s birthday on Tuesday, 5pm reservation. There were games that started at 6pm which got a little loud but the timing was good so we stayed and played. Fun evening!
We particularly like Sam Hill because 1) they sometimes let us eat outside on their covered patio when the weather is less than perfect, and 2) they have a comprehensive chart of all the potential allergens and whether they can or can't be omitted -- including allium (onions and garlic), which most restaurants are oblivious to. Very friendly, tasty food, smart and caring staff!
Great eats. We've patronized this location through Creekside to The Standard to Lalas and now Sam Hill. I think Sam Hill has the right vibe and menu to endure. Fish and Chips were outstanding, the Pesto Grilled Cheese was delicious, and the happy hour Verde chicken skewers were amazing.
We had my Mom's 90th Birthday Celebration here. Such a great team, lead by Jonathan. They were attentive, helpful and caring. They made the event worth every minute. The food was GREAT, some a little spicy (which I love), and plentiful for a 50 person event!!! As a family of adults and kids, everyone had a great time. Thank you for making it such a memorable time. We'll be seeing you again, for drinks, music and socializing in the summer!!
This review is for outdoor dining on the lawn. The setting is amazing for families with kids. Great views, great games, clean, awesome seating options. The drink options were good too. Food is decent but super limited (chips and guacamole, pretzels, chicken steak tacos, hot dogs and chicken fingers and soft serve ice cream)…so if that could be expanded even a bit, this place would be 🔥 also- another suggestion to chef, please pare down the salt on all your chips!! Ty!
Went here for the first time during their soft-open, so I definitely want to cut them a little slack. I'm sure they will gain experience quickly and things will run more smoothly as they figure everything out. That being said, I had no real complaints. The food was pretty standard and not especially inventive, but it was executed with competence. The atmosphere was also not particularly special, but I'm sure they're still working on that. The outdoor areas have particular promise for next summer. I'm excited to see what they do with the place!
Saw this place once on a drive through this part of town, looked up the menu and saw they had chilaquiles, so I made it a point to try it out. Not bad! The atmosphere is definitely "southern inspired" but not too over the top (by which I mean its not a cracker barrel type). I ordered the chilaquiles, which doesn't come with any sides so I also order the breakfast potatoes. The serving was HUGE which was nice until I remembered 1) chilaquiles don't reheat well and 2) I don't really want that many tortillas in one sitting. So I only ate like a third of it. I will say that what I did have was right-on for what I want out of chilaquiles-- salsa verde, thick tortilla chips, crema and queso fresco. I'd probably order it again if I was C R A V I N G chilaquiles (which is not uncommon for me) but otherwise skip it. Maybe if they served it with beans and rice and reduced the serving of chilaquiles. Anyway, the potatoes were fine and so was the coffee. I'm definitely going to go back and try other menu items, like the shrimp and grits.
Went with group of 8 for a birthday dinner. They are well equipped for larger groups. Service was great. Food was tasty and fresh. Should have asked for dressing in the side for salads. They were drenched. Particularly enjoyed the cauliflower bites. The outdoor area looks really nice too.
Bit pricey for what you get, the guacamole and dips don’t come with enough chips. The chips are fantastic and made in house but they need to lower the prices on all menu items by $3-5 for it to be worth it, I’d come back but there are other great options in the area too so I won’t become a regular
Though no fault of the restaurant, we had a screaming child near us that made it hard to carry on a conversation with others at my table, some of the time. The Fish & Chips were much greasier than my husband likes, but the Avacodo Toast was excellent. Great place, fun!
My girlfriends and I went here for brunch. I had looked at the menu beforehand and there was only a handful of things I would eat, since I’m picky. Most stuff had feta or stuff I didn’t want in it. I stuck with the grilled chicken sandwich and let me tell you, it was not good. It was served on Texas toast, which was too buttery and the wrong shape and size completely for the chicken. The chicken breast was thin and too small for the bread and the sandwich was doused in avacado aioli and was dripping! The chips were just ok. My friend got a grilled chicken side salad, which looked good. Other friend got the breakfast plate, said it was ok, and the other one got a pasta dish (don’t remember the name) and she said it was very good. The yard was cool with yard games and fun things. The deck outside had a shade cover which was nice since it was hot. The server was nice, but after we paid, she never came back to give us water or anything even though we were there for like another hour talking. I probably won’t be going back.
I came here for restaurant week and I am very glad I didn’t come when the food was full price. This place deserves 1 star if it weren’t for the very kind wait staff (shoutout to Courtney to being an amazing server). I’m pretty sure this place is a Sysco kitchen (although they won’t admit it). We ordered the onion dip, the jambalaya pasta, the pot roast, and the pecan crumble. The onion dip tasted like the packets you get at the store (Lipton I’m pretty sure). The chips were great, they were obviously made in house, but the dip was mediocre at best. The jambalaya pasta, or should I say soup, was a disgrace to Creole and Cajun cuisine. The sauce was so watery it was pooling at the bottom of the plate, the sausage was cut in so many different ways, and the entire dish lacked any flavor (which goes against everything both of these cuisines are known for). The pasta was also incredibly mushy. The pot roast actually ruined my taste buds. It was so incredibly salty I needed to chug my water. There was also a 2:1 ratio of meats to carrot (carrots being the majority of this dish). The mashed potatoes tasted like they were powdered. Finally, the pecan crumble. Or rather the pecan oatmeal. It was literally oatmeal that had pecans, microwaved, and topped with ice cream. I was so disappointed but I ate it because I couldn’t eat anything else that night. DON’T COME HERE. the food is so bad that I can’t even begin to fathom spending $25 for a plate here is justifiable. If you want something equivalent to the food quality (or maybe even better) go to chilis or Applebees. At least they are honest that their food is not fresh.
We were seated in the bar area next to dirty tables. The food was ok and the server was ok. We had the smash burger and the pasties (gross deep fried and don’t taste like pasties- it was more like fried dough with chopped up mushroom filling).
Food was ok but our server was sick, did not want to be there and it showed. Never was asked how the food was and only did the bare minimum. We did not feel welcomed and will not return.
So I made a reservation for two, once upon arrival we were seated by the bar area. I just wanna tell you that we were an interracial couple, even though they were multiple seats in the main dining area that they could’ve sat us in and no it was not a closed area because they were customer seated in that area. So that was unusual because we were seated next to only people of color in the bar area. When you look outside the bar area, it was nothing but white people. But I decided to give them the benefit of a doubt. The waitress arrived at our table. Did not say hello did not introduce herself. She placed two glasses of ice water without straws and walked away. When she did come back, still did not introduce herself and asked us if we were ready to order, at this time I was not ready since it’s my first time and I wanted to review the menu so I politely said if she could give us a few minutes, but I am ready to place a cocktail order. She took my cocktail order without saying a word and walked away. She came back with my cocktail and asked us if we were ready to order at that time. I said yes I placed my order, my Husband placed his order and I asked her if we could have straws because I do not like to drink my cocktail without a straw. She didn’t respond and walked away. That was the last time we saw her. The food arrived by another server, and that’s when I asked if I can have a straw, and the server grabbed it off the bar and tossed it on the table. The food was ok, nothing special. Before we were done eating another server, dropped off a to go box (even though we didn’t ask for one) and dropped off the bill without saying anything again. We paid the bill, left a lousy tip, wrote on the receipt why the tip was low, and proceeded to walk out. I always leave a minimum of 15% tip even for mid service, this is the first time in my 50 years that I left less but the service we received truly was offensive. So I will keep my hard earned money to spend somewhere else. 1st and last time I would step a foot in that place
My wife’s Chicken pot pie was sour, like it was spoiled. We questioned the waitress and she said it was “supposed to taste like that”. My wife ate no more than half and ended up sick all night long. I had the fish tacos and they were greasy and fishy. It’s Cod, which is generally not a “fishy” fish, so that leads me to believe the fish was old. Won’t be back.
