We had a truly magical experience here. From the building to decorations to food and services, everything was first class. The food was delicious. The drinks really strong. Our favorite were the Mussels. Curry was incredible. Yummy 😋
The food is absolutely amazing. And so is the service. Thank you Sebe. She is professional and friendly and offered several suggestions and recommendations. It was quiet this afternoon. We had dahi puri and tandoori tudke for appetizers. Both were delicious but the tudke won hands down. Hubby and I both had old favorites, lamb vindaloo and tikka masala. First time for our son and he tried butter chicken. All the food was delicious. Added bonus is the story of the hauntings. We will definitely be back.
I want to preface this by saying the staff, food, and atmosphere were incredible. My friend and I would definitely recommend to anybody looking for a good Indian cuisine restaurant. That being said, the experience we had was definitely interesting. We sat at the bar and were very excited because we’ve never sat at a bar before. We ended up seated near this customer who was just non stop jibber jabbering to anybody who would listen. First, it was another customer that he made stay and listen to him for about fifteen minutes. Poor guy was just trying to get a drink. He found his next victim very easily, as it was the bartender. He would ask a plethora of nonsensical questions and would have really strange critiques, justifying the questions by saying he, too, was a bartender. The questions were fine at first and could be taken normally but eventually they just became invasive and hypercritical. The bartender, lovely man named Peter, was answering them with grace but anybody would have reached a breaking point with the sheer amount of questions. It genuinely sounded like an interrogation and Peter was the target. The questions ranged from, “How do you not know *insert nichest Star Wars fact in the world*,” to “How much do you get paid?” or “If my girlfriend wanted the butter chicken but I ordered her the mussels, how mad would she be?” and “How spicy is spicy?” The questions were rapid fire and nonstop. We were there for around an hour and he did not relent. This being said, Peter and our other server we didn’t get the name of, were incredible. If you can stop by, definitely do.
Delicious food! One of the highlights of Austin. We found this restaurant by accident, just driving by after visiting the Capitol. Top notch Indian food, great service and a nice location. Couldn’t be happier!
I ordered the lamb korma it was very delicious. I would recommend hot as medium didn’t have enough spice for my liking-delicious nonetheless. Service was fast and the waitress was nice. It is a very beautiful restaurant!
We actually went there for an after hours paranormal investigation experience/tour with ATX hunted tours. Nice place food smelled delicious but they were closing and did not get to try anything.
Clay Pit absolutely exceeded expectations from start to finish. Every dish we ordered was packed with flavor and beautifully prepared. The appetizers set the tone immediately — fresh, well-seasoned, and the perfect balance of spice. Each entrée was just as impressive, rich in flavor and clearly made with care. You can tell there’s real attention to detail in the kitchen. And the gulab jamun for dessert? Incredible. Warm, perfectly sweet, and the ideal way to end the meal. It truly tied everything together. The service matched the food — attentive without being overbearing, consistently checking in, and quick turnaround times between courses. The entire experience felt smooth, welcoming, and well-coordinated. Clay Pit delivered on every level. Highly recommend.
We recently hosted a wedding reception dinner in Clay Pit’s Bertram’s Hall for 55 people. Shay was fabulous - responsive and super-helpful throughout the planning phase. Additionally, he was hands-on and incredibly supportive on the evening of the dinner - even providing a last minute special meal for a guest who had dietary restrictions following recent surgery. The Hall was recently refurbished (painted, etc.) and looked great. The food, of course, was fabulous. The cost for renting the Hall was reasonable. I am happy to highly recommend Clay Pit!
Walked past this place a few times and the smells wafting out got me hooked! I ordered the Tikka Masala with paneer and cheesy garlic naan. The tikka masala was great but the naan was out of this world! Portion was huge, I left with a full stomach and still left a lot of food on the plate! I sat in the bar area which was cozy and had a nice vibe. The bartenders were super friendly, and the food came out quickly. I would love to go back next time I'm in Austin and try something a little more adventuresome from the menu.
Amazing Food, great service! Some of the best Indian food we have ever had, and we have had it around the world. We would not have known about this hidden gem unless we took the haunted Austin tour in a hearse, so fun (also highly recommend!) where this restaurant allows the tour to pop in and see the amazing building and hear the history there. The FOOD was on point and so perfect! We are total foodies and eat out around the country and world. From the start with the Marsala lamb bites (love that they have a Marsala taster option with any meat choice) to the moist chicken pakora light, crispy, and flavorful, to the crispy cauliflower with hummus as appetizers. The main course was chicken rice biryani and butter chicken! 3 stars was perfect for some definite heat if you like that but we could taste all the complex flavors too, it was so perfect. Nothing was greasy, all the meat was so high quality and tender. One of the at meals we have had in a whirl where everything made our mouths water. Thank you for a wonderful experience while visiting Austin, we will definitely be back next time we are in town!🎊
I have visited this restaurant several times since 2006, most recently in Dec 2025. It has never disappointed and provides flavorful Indian food with a nice ambience. The location is very convenient and they have a good selection of Indian food including some entries which distinguish them from other Indian restaurants in the city. Furthermore, the quality of service is admirable. Its not just a place to get some Indian food but also a great place for a date or an event or a business dinner or to just bring someone visiting from out of town. We will definitely be visiting again.
Clay Pit never disappoints! This is easily one of our favorite spots in Austin—from dinner date nights to bringing friends and family, it’s always incredible. The food is absolutely outstanding, especially the Lamb Kadhai (so flavorful and perfectly cooked!) and their fresh, perfectly soft naan. The drinks are not only delicious but also so beautifully presented. The interior is stunning—warm, elegant, and such a vibe—and the service is consistently amazing every single visit. Nav even stopped by our table to personally check on us and make sure everything was perfect, which was such a thoughtful touch and made our experience even better. They also have a fantastic party hall for events, which is a huge plus. Overall, Clay Pit continues to be our go-to, and we can’t recommend it enough! 5 stars every time.
Claypit is your place to get that best of Indian food. It's near UT Austin campus and the customer service was great. They also have halal options for lamb and beef which was amazing. I loved the food and drinks and it was not noisy like most restaurants I have gone to. Definitely recommend
Really enjoyed our first time dropping in. The repurposing of the old building structure is very cool for a quaint dining experience. Our service was friendly and helpful, and we agreed that the cauliflower was the big hit w its crispness and pack of flavors. The menu has plenty of options without being too big. I also enjoyed the lamb and was glad that I could choose my level of heat. Will be back for sure!
We've been there a few times recently and this place is quickly becoming one of our favorite stops either as a couple or with family and friends. The staff is excellent, courteous, and efficient attending to all our needs at the table or up at the bar. They have discounted happy hour bar dishes (small plates) and I think we've just about tried then all now. Fantastic! As well as all the main dishes. I typically get something with chicken and my wife some sort of curry. We've enjoyed all the various dishes we've tried. Highly recommended as a date night or with family and friends, this is a can't go wrong pick.
This is one of the most delicious meals I have ever had!! I can truly only say positive things about the Clay Pitt. The staff were amazingly kind and fun! Answered all our questions and made us feel incredibly welcomed. The interior is clean, well decorated, and an overall very comfortable place to be! Plenty of seating for groups of all sizes! And my god, the food and second to none! Every single dish, from apps to main dishes, to sides, not a single thing we ate was less than spectacular!
I WOULD LIKE TO SAY TO THE MANAGER DREAD YOU ARE AWESOME ❤️Let me start out saying I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!! Gwen is so sweet and awesome❤️I will be requesting her when I go back. TO THE CHEF'S YOU ARE ONE OF A KIND AND THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE ❤️The food is so FREAKING GOOD!!!! OH MY GOD when I started eating I had tears in my eyes. It is AMAZING. First time I had Clay Pit food I ordered through Too Good To Go. I went back in 3 days and ordered the Cucumber Salad and Tandoori Broccoli. I will be back to try something else on the menu. ALL THE STAFF IS WONDERFUL❤️
This is a modern Indian restaurant. It is very convenient to the capital and many downtown hotels. The service was quick and polite. The food was excellent, and there were so many choices to choose from. The bathrooms could use little more cleaning. However, the restraunt was clean and comfortable. If you are looking for a Indian restaurant you have found it.
Food isn't too spicy and can be a quick Indian meal around Downtown. Friendly staff helped to pack the togo order. Not much crowded and has outdoor seating option as well. Parking is the challenging part especially in the weekends, paid parking kiosks available within walkable distance. Have a good dining.
The food was good overall and met expectations. A few dishes were quite tasty, though some could be improved with better seasoning and consistency. Portions were fair, and the menu offered a nice variety of options. Service was pleasant and timely. Overall, it’s a decent place for Indian food and worth a visit if you’re in the area, with some room to grow.
Clay Pit: Good Kebabs, Frustrating Service, Disappointing Drinks I recently visited Clay Pit Contemporary Indian Cuisine in Austin, TX, prior to the Tim McGraw concert, eager to relive some of the incredible flavors I experienced traveling throughout India. The kebabs and curry did not disappoint. The Tandoori Kebabs were perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor, a true taste of tradition. However, the service left a lot to be desired. We had a 5:00 pm reservation for three, but upon arrival, we were informed they wouldn't seat us until our entire party was present. Our daughter, who had just arrived on an international flight, was stuck in traffic 15 minutes away. While the restaurant wasn't packed, with only six other patrons and several empty tables, they were unwilling to accommodate us for seating. This inflexibility was frustrating, especially considering our extenuating circumstances. The food, as mentioned, Tandoori Kebabs were good. However, skip the cocktails. My "Indian Nights" drink was a major letdown. It was watery and barely tasted of gin, a far cry from the photo on the menu. Overall, Clay Pit is a mixed bag. The food is good, but the service needs improvement, and the cocktails are a definite miss and avoid. While I wouldn't recommend it wholeheartedly or plan to return myself, if you're looking for an Indian food experience in Austin and prioritize the food over everything else, it might be worth a try. Just be prepared for a potentially inflexible seating policy and underwhelming drinks.
I walked into Clay Pit for a family lunch with high expectations. The reputation set the bar high. The reality didn’t even come close. Let’s start with what works. The space is genuinely pleasant. Spacious dining room, comfortable table spacing, decent parking, and an ambiance that suggests care and intention. On the surface, it looks like a restaurant that knows what it’s doing. Then the service and food unravel that illusion fast. Our waiter, Zack, was yawning while taking our order. This was lunch, not a late-night closing shift. It set the tone immediately. We weren’t offered a drinks menu. When I asked for a fresh lime soda, something basic and standard in any Indian restaurant, I was told they don’t have it. Fine. But when I asked again for a drinks menu, I was told they don’t give one on weekends for lunch. That explanation made no sense, and only after pushing did I finally get the menu. I ordered an Old Fashioned. At that point, expectations were already slipping. The food arrived quickly, which turned out to be the only efficient part of the meal. I ordered a bowl, a curry, and assorted breads. The bowl was painfully uninspired. Rice, curry, and some greens awkwardly pushed to the side. No balance, no thought, no creativity. Worse, the rice served on the side with the curry looked stale, sticky, and pale in color, the kind of rice that’s clearly been sitting too long and reheated without care. The tikka sauce was aggressively tangy, completely off-profile, and tasted more like something poured straight from a jar than anything simmered with intention. It didn’t resemble tikka in flavor, texture, or aroma. The malai kofta was worse. It shared the same sharp, tangy base, stripping the dish of everything that makes malai kofta what it is. Creaminess was absent. Warmth was missing. Depth was nonexistent. It tasted like a generic curry pretending to be Indian. The breads were fine. Not memorable, not offensive. Just fine. Here’s the thing: this kitchen does not understand Indian food. Not the balance, not the soul, not the fundamentals. It feels engineered rather than cooked. If you’re going to serve Indian cuisine, you need someone who actually knows it. Right now, this food doesn’t taste Indian at all. Clay Pit looks the part, but the food tells a different story. And unfortunately, that story ends in disappointment. I can’t recommend this place to anyone genuinely looking for good Indian food.
I knew i should have trusted what others had told me about this place. I came with my wife and ordered several plates. One of my curries had a melted PLASTIC LID in it. The meats tasted old or maybe they had been sitting there for few days. Manager was nonchalant and wanted to give me a new curry to take home, he didnt get the hint that I didnt trust anything coming out of that kitchen. I refused the take home offer and he brought it anyways. I left it on the table for him to enjoy the microplastics in the curry.
