El Secreto de Abuela #2 is a hidden gem loved for its authentic, homemade Mexican food, friendly service, and reasonable prices. Customers rave about the flavorful dishes and attentive staff, especially Sandra. Some note the basic setting, but the food quality wins them over.

Manchaca location: 5700 Manchaca Suite 570 I ordered the Huevos Mi Pueblo two over medium eggs with a green chili and the other one with a red sauce on top of two tortilla de maíz and beans. DELICIOUS! 🥰👍🏼☕️🍽
Best breakfast taco deal in South Austin. Really liked this place. Nice people running the restaurant. Will come again.
Feels homey. Machacado was really good. The beefiness of the barbacoa really shined! Good salsa
Goated food very Spanish
Food was great and the cute girl at the counter had the best suggestions on what to eat. Will definitely return for this hidden gem.
Great authentic Mexican food. Comfy environment. Good breakfast tacos. Friendly staff.
My first experience was excellent. I absolutely love the steak poblano.
The food and service are both amazing! My favorite spot for breakfast tacos!
I went through the "AnyTime" car wash... Supreme choice. By the time they got thru with my vehicle, it was like going thru the H2O joint for a fraction of the cost. Zero wait time. Their market next door had MILK. The most important thing on my list. Zero wait time. It's nice to see them successful. I wish they had cheaper diesel fuel! Dont' miss Mina Authentic Mexican food truck out front for some killer Mexican food. Very nice staff at the car wash and the market. A well satisfied customer.
These folks braved the crazy Texas snow storms to provide much needed food for folks without water and power. The tortilla soup was delicious and perfect on a cold day. Thanks to this awesome staff!
This place is down the street and I come here at least once a week! Its delicious. Home made tortillas and food that taste like back home. Authentic and so so good.
Went here for the breakfast tacos. Large portions, good prices. Genuine taqueria atmosphere. I look forward to going again.
I usually go to the #1, but u tried the #2 and is as good, the MOJARRA was cooked real well, not soggy nor burned, and avocados were real fresh as well as the rice being cooked real fluffy and with great taste
Flavorful fajitas ,service is great with friendly staff atmosphere is casual lots of air spray paint decor and funny phrases in Spanish
Best breakfast tacos!! Love their green salsa, too. We always enjoy stopping in or picking up to-go!
Awesome service very nice setting
The atmosphere here is slightly lacking, but the food is always delicious and the service is attentive. I eat here regularly
Tasty, fast and reasonable. Especially the breakfast taco special is unbeatable. The location on Stassney is also very convenient for our neighborhood.
Great staff! Great food! Very good experience! If you haven't tried them you need to. Thanks for the great food.
Great place very big portions and food is very flavorful. If you like mecican food youll love this place. Its a small resturant but excellent in food. Fast friendly service.
Very friendly staff and great food. I had the bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast burrito with a side of papas. Muy sabor !
Tacos are reasonably priced for breakfast, excellent start to my day thanks yall!
Lovely atmosphere and service! If you respect Mexican food come here, one of the best al pastors I’ve had in austin.
It's my fave place in town. The rellenos are super big with your choice of cheese, ground beef, beef fajita, stewed chicken, chicken fajita or shrimp. Comes with red sauce but ask for green for a tasty treat. The Abuela plate and Steak Poblano are on my frequent flyer list but everything is so good. Super friendly wait staff, honest food...we come here 2-3 times a week. Generous portions, reasonable prices...cant be beat!
I’ve eaten there several times since they opened recently. Everything so far is really good. their cheese enchiladas and their mole is excellent. Good lunch specials.
We went on New Year’s Day and sooo glad!! The food is so authentic and delicious, this is definitely a hidden gem. The server was great too! ♥️
Chips are good. not like the other restaurants
The food here is excellent. Enchilada plate with fajita meat on the side is amazing. Rice and beans taste similar to Moms.
The best authentic Mexican food we have had in a VERY long time
Amazing tortilla soup, like, freaking fantastic 😍
Love love this place great food never disappoint my top 5 go to Mexican restaurant 😋 🙌 the lady is so sweet and patient very clean place cool air great food great people
Best little secret on stassney and menchaca. The beans had lots of flavor, the tacos where a good size and the migas where on point for a great price!
I've only eaten here since the start of the pandemic, so everything I've gotten has been take-out. Everything I've tried so far has been good. I really like the Fajitas Texanas for two. It's a lot of food for two people - more than we can usually eat. They marinate their beef fajitas in something that gives them great flavor. My only complaint is that their rice and beans are both a little too bland.
Delicious, fast & friendly... We are lucky to have a location in South Austin, as well as their original legendary spot on the east side
I had their shrimp enchilada plate to go as I've never had shrimp enchiladas before. Oof it is hot but I'm a super mild person and my heat tolerance is minimal. That said, the food is freshly made and it is flavorful beyond the heat. The enchiladas are also stuffed with a lot of shrimps which is delightful. The dining area didn't smell unlike what some of the other reviewers said, and it is comparatively cleaner and better maintained than some other Tex-Mex places nearby.
El Secreto de Abuela was a much needed installation, for the Manchaca/Stassney area. I have enjoyed every dish they have served me. There is so much attention to detail within every recipe and you will taste the quality after your first bite. I appreciate what the cooks and staff are doing (daily), and I know the best has yet to come.
The best menudo in town, and the staff are always excellent and very pleasant!
The tacos were good. Orange rice was surprisingly nice and not dry. The beef soup tasted good as well. Unfortunately they didn't have desserts when we went.
El Secreto de Abuela is a cute, unassuming little Mexican place. The prices are a tad high, but the food and service are certainly something to come back for again and again. We swung in on a weekday morning for some breakfast. I'm a huge fan of chicharrones, so I got the Huevos con Chicharrones. My boyfriend leans towards Huevos a la Mexicana, but he decided to jazz them up with machacado and nopales. Both of our meals were delicious! The chicharrones were nice and tender. The potatoes were hot and crispy. His eggs came out perfect and were delicious with the added machacado and nopales. We also split an orange juice which was really good and came in a giant goblet lol. Our server was very friendly and attentive throughout our entire meal. We will definitely be back to give lunch or dinner a try soon.
For me the best Mexican food that fits my taste buds. Oh my goodness from starter main course everything was just yummy. Environment wow, people are so welcoming. Sandra is the best. Food best in austin. I would definitely visit again and again.
Best kept secret in town. Don’t let the exterior sway your impression. The food is great and staff is kind. Cheap eats and fantastic green salsa.
Excellent food! My only complaint is the refried beans were too finely mashed, but still delicious. Went on a Friday night at dinner time and were the only ones, I have no idea why. So glad we went!
My friends and I tried this place because we live in the neighborhood and like the silly signage. We couldn’t have been more thrilled with the food and the price, it all came out fast and the service was super friendly. We have definitely put it on our list of favorite Mexican joints in town. My group got chicken mole, chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, ceviche chalupas, and a crispy beef taco. My friend with the mole said it was his favorite he’s had in Austin. The ceviche was perfectly cooked and balanced. Not too acidic, served on a really nice light crispy tostada. The crispy taco was also excellent…great flavor and a really nice shell. The two breakfast dishes were well seasoned, and the bacon and beans tasted great. Looking forward to trying all the other dishes. We’ll be back soon.
Why was I sleeping on this place? I came here to have lunch while my car is being inspected and was pleasantly surprised. Service was top notch, food was even better (if that’s even possible). I had the #1 lunch special and found it super satisfying and a great bang for your buck. I definitely will be recommending this place and coming back for more!
I've been eyeballing this place for a while and finally decided to stop in for breakfast this morning. While I was there, a few people came in to pick up to-go food, but I was the only one in the dining room. The server took great care of me and came to check on me several times, refilling my tea and salsa before I even needed it. I ordered an iced tea, chips and salsa, and a five mini tripas taco plate. The tripas were different than I've had before. I don't know if this is down to this being a different regional cuisine or what. They were the crunchiest tripas I've ever had. The chips were warm and seemed very fresh. 5 hours later I'm still so stuffed that I had to skip lunch. The whole meal was about 15 bucks. So with a $5 tip I gorged on yummy Mexican food for 20 bucks. Not bad! I'll definitely be coming back to try some more of the menu.
The location is quite hidden in plain sight: while it is at a well known intersection, I've never noticed them before. The food tasted very good and they provided a lot of it! The fajitas for two (the one with steak, shrimp and chicken) would have been sufficient for all three of us, and were meat eaters! The place was cozy and the staff was very patient and friendly. Will go by there again and bring friends.
Went for breakfast after church. The seating is cramped. Food was mediocre but delivered quick and warm. Employees very kind.
Tried to beat the crowd at Veracruz this morning, but alas- I made it too late and I was on a schedule. I saw this spot on my way there and saw they claimed homemade tortillas so decided to stop by! My love for Veracruz stems from their homemade *corn* tortillas. This place make their own corn tortillas too! The tortillas were delicious. My breakfast tacos were fresh and super fast. The two women working were very friendly. The migas taco was very good- a different kind of migas from Veracruz so I won’t compare them. My bacon, egg, and cheese taco was fine- but I’m picky and prefer the bacon mixed in with my eggs rather than just a strip of bacon placed on top. This style of bec taco is hard to find in austin! I’ll try chorizo or potato next time instead. I will definitely be back! The tortillas make the taco imo and this place has got them!
Authentic food, friendly staff. Love their green salsa. We like to call ahead or take out as it gets pretty busy inside.
Best green salsa and chicharron & egg tacos in town. Haven't been a fan of other dishes I've tried, though. Potatoes are kinda bland. But the dishes they do well keep me coming back!
The food was really good. The horchata was delicious . The food was a little pricey and the portions were small but however the breakfast tacos were very tasty .
I ordered Migas Rancheras... which arrived without ranchers sauce as the menu states...apparently according to a friendly server the salsa is mixed into the eggs. Still not believable view the photo. If you order tortillas ( which are delicious!) they are as a side item with this entree. The refried Beans are average to runny they are not over spiced with cumin and are also excellent for a comfort breakfast. The food is definitely hot (finally a restaurant that knows the importance of temperature) I would recommend this to anyone wanting friendly fast service. Thank you El Secreto de Abuela! One of my 3 star picks definitely better than most in the area of any cuisine so I give it 4 stars in the end!
Kind of a dive but good Tex-Mex. Good lunch specials daily.
This little restaurant was far the best homemade mexican food I ever tasted. I gone to many others and this is best authentic food I tasted and enjoyed. We ordered Migas which were so tasty full of flavor. I order the House Chilaquiles, which were so good and crunchy! Taste just like homemade from home! I wanted to try there breakfast tacos, which I did and were delicious and hand made tortillas freshly made! Definitely recommend this restaurant and the service was wonderful, they are so sweet and kind. Will definitely be coming back to this hole in the wall!!
Service is ok . Food is ok . My only problem is that I ordered beef tacos and they brought pork. I asked the waitress to check on that and the cook told her they were beef.. I’m allergic to pork . That’s how I knew the difference
I prefer the restaurant across the street. He they have two salsas, but the red salsa is too oniony. Across the street they have better salsas, three types. Here the use plastic ware and across the street they serve salsas with steel spoons. I go across the street because they use steel utensils for same quality food.
The staff were SUPER friendly and it's a cute little restaurant, but the food was blah. I had a chicken burrito and wasn't very impressed. It just didn't have much flavor at all.
I’ll give this place a 3. Great service and aqua frescas. Decent tacos. Decent Tex Mex. The breakfast decent. Not exactly anything more then Tex Mex though. If you’re looking for more authentic flavor , this is not the place. Pretty sure the carne guisada came out of a can.
Food is not as good as in their original location
It was great. I got the chilaquiles verdes. Omg! When I say it was spicy, it was burning my mouth. But they were delicious. It also came with an egg on top... but i requested it to be on the side since i am not a big fan of eggs. I gave it to my son, but they had put it on top of the chilaquiles originally and took it off, and brought it separately. They thought I wouldn't have noticed. But my son took a small bite and felt the burning sensation of the green salsa. So i asked them to remake it. Since I did tell them, i wanted it on the side. I was very disappointed. I have to say I only got 6 little potatoes on my plate. They were very stingy with them. I wish I had taken a picture. I was able to eat more than half of the chilaquiles until I just gave out how spicy they were. I ordered a carne asada taco. Delicious. One thing I didn't like that they didn't have kids size drinks. They charge you a regular adult size cup. My nephew didn't even drink half the cup. Hubby said menudo is good, but it does have a kick to it as well. It's a very small location.
The food was ok but way overpriced. We thought we were getting lunch specials but this meal was $30. The service was great, very friendly and cheerful and we got what we ordered but were just surprised at the prices, should have checked before we ordered. For example, almost $3 for add avocado, and another $3 for add pico de gallo. The chips tasted anything but homemade, which made me seriously doubt the claim of fresh, homemade tortillas.
Been coming for quite a while and I consistently get some favorites like the Aguacate con queso and Huaraches with chicken. I tried a new seasonal item the corn cup they offered and had to say for the price point and the original photo it was very disappointing. For $8 you get about a 12oz cup of warm sweet corn with about a tablespoon of mayo a lime and a sprinkle of tajin style seasoning. I get it's a seasonal menu item but specifically posted next to chilequiles and a margarita and churros and menudo. None of these items had any prices listed so be sure to ask. I guess part of my disappointment comes from the price point. My chicken huaraches were only 7.79 but this side item was more than an entree and let's be honest its about 8oz of canned unroasted sweetcorn with a tablespoon of mayonnaise and a dash of seasoning. Its too much for what it was. My fault for not asking. But then they should have advertised the price with the signs.
1st time trying this place. The customer service is very friendly. Felt welcome which is a plus, cause a lot of these kinds of restaurants in austin aren't very welcoming to others. Didn't have any issues with placing my order, however the server didn't give me back the correct amount of change. But Ima let it slide for now. Next time Just be sure in the future that you're counting & giving your customers their change back. I also wanted to point out there is a odd smell in the restaurant like another person mention, A deep cleaning is needed. The food was pretty ok. I would probably try something esle off the menu cause The burritos are very ...I mean very small...felt like a kids meal. So If you want an actual big burrito you'll have to go somewhere else. :)
We had the tacos suadero, steak poblano, quesadilla, gordita, and chicken enchiladas. *Tacos were ok but they told me they were beef but I swear they were pork. *Steak poblano was well enjoyed by the person who ordered them. *Gordita was very good. Will definitely come back for that. * chicken enchiladas were good *quesadillas needed more cheese
I was excited to try this place out but will not be returning due to frozen refried beans being served on our breakfast plates. The waiter gave us a plate to scrape the beans onto so she could cook them in microwave by the time we got the plate back we were pretty much done with our breakfast.
My son and i had been calling on different days to order and the phone is always busy. One day i decided to go in as i was walking in i saw the waitress/cashier picking up the phone from her pocket and turning off the phone and the phone started ringing...so my question was to her your phone always is busy she didn't answer me back. I believe they don't want my service i guess or from any one else food is good, the service i don't appreciate.
It’s pretty bad in terms of food but the lemonade is delicious. Chips were stale. Homemade flour tortillas don’t necessarily mean fresh. We got the beef fajita nachos, chalupa, and enchilada plate, all of which would have earned this place one star. You don’t want to know Grandma’s secret.
The only 2 things I liked about this restaurant were the Tortillas and the Agua de Jamaica!!! Staff was nice. The food, negative!!
Previous experiences here were good, the food was relatively tasty, brought out quickly, and the service was good. However, the last time I ate here, I felt very sick afterwards and my food tasted very odd. I believe there was still some type of grill cleaning solution on the grill when they made my eggs. Because of this, I won’t be returning.
The food was not as delicious as other restaurants I've been won't be going back sorry 😐
The tortillas are not homemade the mole is sweet and wasn't to my liking and the chicken looked gray. The salsa had a good heat to it but had too much lemon juice. The abuelas plate didn't have much flavor and the meat was overcooked. TBH I should've just gone to Casa Maria's
First time here I ordered a breakfast plate to go. Didn't get several sides and they substituted them with rice....super disappointed. Will not be back.
Everything tasted vaguely strange, even the side of rice and the tortilla soup. The queso compuesto was inedible (gross plastic cheese that holds form even when "melted"). We didn't finish our food and I still spent the rest of the day and all night feeling unwell. Feeling disappointed (among other things)
I ordered the Tex-Mex Enchiladas. There were no beans and rice. It came with chips and queso. The queso was poured over the chips and the chips became hard and uneatable when I got home. The enchiladas had at least 2 inches of cheese and were not tasty. The prices are very high for the atmosphere and uneatable food. Will not go there again. Spent over $16 for lunch, with no drink.
We had really high hopes for this place. My boyfriend had been bugging me to go. Although the waitress was super friendly and kind and fast for service. The entire establishment smelled terrible. I’m only posting this to offer help to the restaurant. We could not even sit down to enjoy the food the smell was that strong. It really needs a strong, antiseptic, deep clean.
Food is amazing. They advertise $8.99 lunch with a permanently painted sign on the window outside in two places. Find out after you order at the counter (where there are no signs) that it’s $13.95. Change your sign outside. Also, I come back after leaving with my to go order to get a fork they forgot to put in the bag, I ask for one extra tortilla, and I’m told it’s another 75¢. Y’all. Come on. If I dined in I would have had free chips and salsa.
It's true you either can't trust reviews or Austinites are so used to the smell of urinals and toilets they've gone nose blind to it, but the minute you walk into this restaurant you are hit with a very bad septic smell that rivals truckstop restrooms nationwide. We sat down and immediately had to leave it was so bad. Like dining in a well used bathroom. Fresh sceptic smell hovers in the air, and it's impossible to enjoy any type of food. Can you really trust food in an establishment like this? Look at other reviews and you will see the septic smell problem is at least 3 years old. They won't be fixing it anytime soon. That's just how it is. You've been warned. I kept bugging my gf to go and we finally went and it was a major disappointment and downright disgusting. 1 star. Zero if I could. Server was nice, though. Not her fault this place is nasty.
asked server if flautas were available, and she confirmed they were. I was unexpectedly charged over $30. What Mexican restaurant doesn't have flautas? Imposters! food was horrible btw
