Emerald Tavern is a unique cafe, bar, bookstore, and board game venue. Customers rave about the extensive game selection, friendly staff (especially Joseph, Casey, Sam and Marcie), and the overall cozy atmosphere. Some mention slow service and overpriced drinks.

When our merry band of travelers embarked upon our journey through the capital of Texas, we happened upon a mysterious tavern. Nestled between an overpass and a menagerie of exotic beasts, The Emerald Tavern beckoned us toward promises of adventure and respite. Upon arrival, we paused to admire the spaceship of a well-loved alien creature, disguised as a call box. We made acknowledgements and stepped into the tavern. We were met with an unfathomable array of magicks- a wall of beautifully colored stones and games designed to preordain one's fate. Throughout the adventure, we were met with surprises at every corner: a collection of incantations for the mastery of dungeons, lands, and universes; an emporium of boxes each containing their own adventure; a wondrous array of magickal colors and figures with which one might speak life into existence; and in one far corner, a hidden portal through the Warp to a future universe of chaos and grimdark known as Warhammer. The Tavern sits invitingly at the apex, overseen by an ancient dragon whose loyal subjects serve its guests and wandering folk. Our sprightly barkeep gave excellent recommendations for the pub fare and amazing variety of drinks, each with an adventure unto itself. We chose a Ranger and mead for our barbarian, a matcha latte for the druid, and pretzel to snack on for the red-haired dwarf (who then progressed to digging a hole and quested to snatch a beloved friend from the dragon's jaws). The halfling of our party chose to assist our alien friend, The Doctor, in eliminating a common enemy. The Adipose met its fate in a mug of steamed milk and molten chocolate, which was promptly devoured by the young creature. Upon our departure, we also defeated the mimic that had been plaguing the staff, which we would possibly recommend doing before one chooses a drink. All in all, this was a noteworthy undertaking which we would recommend to anyone up for a good time. Hope you enjoyed this review; May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out. ❤️
10/10 reserved a booth one day for a few hours, went with friends, ordered BLTs with British back bacon, ginger ales and loads of fried potatoes and played dnd until we had to leave. A luxury location for board game geeks and TTRPG players. (They've also got the best mocktails I've ever had) The food is truly incredible and the service is spectacular, but you are paying for said incredible food - it's not cheap. (But it's not expensive either)
really great spot. I reserved the big party room for about 10 of us and it was very nice. we were able to keep the door closed which kept literally ALL of the sound isolated. we couldn't hear anything from outside and (I hope) no one could hear us. they also had a private water station, which we almost drained completely by the end of the night. very nice touch! they were able to easily ring up our food & drink orders with a handheld device, and keep track of all our different tabs. the food was pretty good, but a little bit overpriced for the quality. very good portion sizes though, not small but not massive either. their cocktails and other special drinks were the star of the show, the London fog was DELICIOUS as was the matcha latte on their special drinks menu (forgot the name of it). the mead selection is nothing short of exquisite. the staff were exceptional. they were so fun, so kind and happy to serve us, came in regularly to make sure they got us whatever we needed. 15/10 staff at this place 👏👏 the ONLY thing I could possibly improve is the size of their game library. it was a little smaller than I expected, with only a handful of games for large parties. they have a 1-game checkout policy, so you can only have one at a time. this made it a little difficult for our larger party to find games we could all play together. however, we managed to stay entertained for 5 full hours with the games they already had, and they do allow you to bring your own games. we'll probably bring a couple of games next time that are tailored for 9+ people, just in case. WE WILL BE BACK!! ❤️
This place is such a hidden Austin gem, we can’t believe we stumbled upon it by accident. Emerald Tavern is a board game and card game focused tavern and cafe serving up delicious bites in between unlimited play for just $10 (day pass; you can select your board games at the front). The deal itself is good enough but this place is just awesome. Our waiter was fantastic, funny and informative; the staff clearly cares deeply about what they do, and the concept is just so cool. We came early on a Sunday and the place was packed by the time we left it, which the waiter warned it would be. The hot chocolate and matcha drink we had were great and had we not eaten before we got there we would’ve dove straight into their pretty extensive menu. The whole place is just fun and cool and exemplifies the adage of “Keep Austin Weird”, which we love. There were people of all ages there playing games from Catan to Chameleon to Monopoly, there’s something for everyone. They also have an extensive card and figurine collection so if you’re into collecting things this may be a spot to search for some worthwhile stuff. If you like board games, D&D, or anything alike then you HAVE to give this place a try, it’s just a fantastic spot.
After going there once I’ve been coming every Saturday with my friends to play board games and eat some pretty good food. Every time I go I always ask Joseph what games to play and he always recommends something that is beginner friendly and fun to play! 10/10
I spent $130 to book the 18 person room for a team event. The room was great with several big tables we could move around to fit our need. We were able to grab several different board games and try them all out. We ordered several of their tasty appetizers and a lot of drinks, I really appreciate the variety they have in both. Overall we had a great time and the excellent vibe, service and food played a big part.
This is a fantastic, low key, and chill place to play board and card games! You can either bring your own or borrow from their game library. $5 for 1 game or $10 for unlimited games. If you get hungry while playing they have a menu filled with pub food that is delicious. The bar has tons of options, from coffees and teas, to local and non local craft beers. The cocktails are also fantastic and their rotating seasonal menu is always fun to order from. My wife and I regularly spend 2-4hrs there a week. We LOVE it there and highly recommend it!
A great gaming pub and store with plenty of space. They have a larger miniatures and paint selection than you'd expect. And the TTRPG section is well stocked with both D&D, Pathfinder, and other games. Make sure to reserve a table on busy nights. The drinks are excellent and cocktails are the price you'd expect at any bar. Coffee, espresso drinks and tea is also available. The food is good but nothing to write home about. It's mainly there to keep you fed while gaming with friends. Rentable rooms are a little tight for the money they charge.
Fantastic spot for gatherings—hidden gem! I recently hosted my birthday party at Emerald Tavern, and it was absolutely perfect. Everyone raved about the food and drinks, and Ryan and the entire staff went above and beyond to make the night special. The service was friendly, attentive, and accommodating from start to finish. So many of my guests asked, “How did you even find this place?” It really is a bit of a hidden gem—especially for folks who aren’t part of the gaming community—but it deserves to be on everyone’s radar. It’s a wonderful spot for small gatherings of up to about 30 people. They were extremely flexible with the menu and offered a great variety that worked for both my vegetarian friends and the meat-eaters. And the drink options? A huge hit. There was truly something for everyone. If you’re looking for a welcoming, unique venue with great service and even better food and drinks, Emerald Tavern is an excellent choice. Highly recommend!
I really do love this place, our server seemed new and didnt keep up with our table well, but the next people sid great. The atmosphere is always wonderful, though if the ac was more powerful I think it would be good because it gets busy and hot but I love the design of the place and I love the music playing in the background. The food ranges from very good to sort of bland and overpriced, but the drinks are top notch and the ability to rent a table is really nice for a communal place to play games without having to figure out also where to eat. Reserving a table is your best bet, but sometimes there are tables on the bar side ans the bar is always an option.
You walk in and immediately feel at home as a neurospicy human. The staff are like your new best friends. You can bring your own games or pay a little bit to rent one of their board games they have. Also, the food is far better than it has any right to be for just a cute little board game Cafe. And I don't know who comes up with their drinks, but they're an alchemist.
This place is great! Store, cafe, bar, and restaurant all in one. You can play games at your table, can roll a D20 for a drink selection and keep it if you order the drink, can shop, and enjoy all of the food and drink they have to offer. Was a fun time with great service and many glittery, if rather sweet, drinks.
This is THE premier board gaming space to check out. I brought my nephew and brother up from San Antonio for a day of board gaming and from SA to Austin, there is no contest. No gaming store comes close to the level in their medieval theme and atmosphere. The retail area is spacious and not crammed next to the gaming area like some other stores. There is plenty of seating space in the main area and they also have a completely separate area that gives space for larger war gaming. The war gaming tables are set up and ready to go, no need to wait for special table modifications. While they do charge to rent games, the gaming library is well stocked and the level of diversity in the selection makes the charge well worth it. The restrooms are clean they have multiple stalls and urinals; which is nice compared to other stores in SA that only have a single toilet/urinal for its customers. This space is also kid friendly. Which might be a weird thing to mention but there are some "comparable" stores in SA that aren't kid friendly. Imagine? Running a game store and not being kid friendly? The food pricing might be a little on the steep side, however, you're paying to be able to eat a decent meal while being able to enjoy a clean, not to mention, well-lit gaming space. The menu has enough variety and selection so there's a bit for everyone. Additionally, having a bar that serves alcohol, sodas and even sachet tea is something that is greatly appreciated. Some advice for those looking to make their way, I recommend reserving a table because this store definitely can get busy with customers but that's not a deterrent by any means; they stay packed for a reason. This store is echelons above those "comparable" in SA. And even though I'm cities away, I will definitely be coming back and recommending Emerald Tavern to friends.
Went here to play board games with friends and had a great time. It was $10 for the table for the day, and I played 3 games. You also have the option to bring your own board games. Ahead of going, I didn't see anyone really talk about the food, so I ordered a few things - I got the poutine, the grilled cheese, their seasonal mocha, regular mocha, and a seasonal non-alcoholic drink. I really enjoyed the poutine and would order it again. Something to do is it was a really messy dish, fries were great, but the gravy and cheese curds made it messy. The grilled cheese was okay but could have been more melty. I enjoyed all the drinks I got, especially the mocha. Would definitely come here again.
The staff was amazing. Beer selection was out of this world. This is a quirky place with tasty, different food. I had tomato basil soup, I believe, and wow, was it flavorful! Very fresh tasting... I also ate their fried chicken thighs, but I don't remember the name of them on the menu, and amazing homemade mashed potatoes that I thought I would have leftovers of because the helping was very generous, but they were so delicious that I had to eat every last bite! Many tables for playing games on, lots of seating in the back area, lots of different things to purchase. So much cool stuff that I took pictures to show my family.

I love this place so much, it's such a vibe if you just want a chill night playing board games with friends, but I will say that their food game needs a little help. They have an extensive menu with fun seasonal drinks (including mocktails!) and a variety of food options that are kind of Western European themed (think England and Ireland), which goes along with the theme of the place. I got the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with English Chips and while the sandwich was okay (can't really go wrong with cheese, pesto, and grilled chicken), the chips stole the show for me and will for you if you like thicker/potatoey friend fries. As for their fish and chips, they were fine, but the fish was more breading than fish and was on the sweeter end, which I didn't expect, but didn't hate either. We also tried their Ranger, Bard, and Cleric mocktails, and I have to say that I was a little disappointed as the drinks were extremely overpriced compared to what we got... the Bard was essentially a fancy glass of Trix cereal, the Ranger was cucumber soda, and the Druid was sparkling lemonade, all priced at $8 per drink. I can appreciate that they have mocktail options, but $8 for a cup of cereal is too much for my taste They get four stars from me because the ambiance, concept, service, and experience were fantastic, but the food quality and prices need some work.
Good food, great staff, and a fun casual atmosphere - you can rent games or bring your own, and party rooms are available to rent if you want to have a private party. My group had a great time running a DND one shot there. The autumn cocktail specials I have to give a shout out- if you like whiskey, try the Ravem's Descent; it's awesome! (On the regular cocktail menu, I like the Dodecahedron. It's a daiquiri and it's great.)
Edit: I am so glad that Emerald Tavern is doing well. The game selection is better than ever and I am loving the novelties that they have for sale now, too. I know that a higher volume of customers is going to change the experience, but the quality of service we received at our last visit was not great. We came at around 12:30 and it took 45 minutes to an hour for our food to start coming out. The host that sat us was very informative and friendly, and our server was fine, but not friendly and our order wasn't completely correct. I ran in to someone I know while we were there and they were also off put by the service. Overall, I would definitely come back to buy a game and maybe a drink, but I wouldn't plan on staying for a meal. (Previous review) This place needs more hype. You can play board games free, the food is AMAZING (bacon and Brie sandwich is so good and I don’t like bacon), their iced chai tea is my favorite in town, they make great Moscow Mules, AND EVERYONE who works there is friendly. They’ve treated me and my partner like friends every time I visit. I love emerald tavern🍻
We didn’t get food but this place was awesome. We googled “board game bar” and found this GEM of a place. Harry was super sweet and really wanted me to buy the Owl Bear, but I didn’t fold. I wanted four specific things and they didn’t have any of them so that was the one -1 star bummer. 1. Local made games 2. Store stickers 3. Guild of Merchant Explorers expansion (they had the base game) 4. General pieces to build your own board game The Minstrel’s Mead is the absolute best.

Emerald Tavern used to be one of my favorite places to go in Austin, and I do not say that lightly. As an introverted person who enjoyed meeting up with like-minded tabletop roleplayers, board gamers, and card gamers, I was surprised by how enjoyable the food at the atmosphere was, but I feel that things have gone downhill, especially in the service department. While some of the servers are incredibly knowledgeable, polite, and understand the vision and the vibe of this cafe, they are few and far between. There is a massive gap in talented, skilled service workers here, and while this wouldn't be a problem for a cheaper establishment that is food-focused (something like a Chili's or Applebees), for what used to be such a unique and fun place to hang out, play games, and eat food at, it's spotlighting a serious problem that can only get worse. A couple of sour experiences that have made me decide to no longer continue gaming here, as follows: 1. I've witnessed servers spill multiple glasses of water across game spaces, one of which was hosting an EDH game (for those unfamiliar, VERY expensive trading card game). Now, while I understand that accidents happen, this has become a pattern. In fact, nearly every time I've gone in recent memory, something like this has happened. 2. Servers regularly forget my order, or completely ignore simple requests. It's become a bit of a running joke now that each time my partner and I go, we have to ask multiple times for a carafe of water. Last night, our server ignored our request to split the tab, leaving me scratching my head as to how I ended up paying $13 for a single diet coke. 3. Servers are completely unfamiliar with the menu, to the point that I had to avoid an argument with one over whether or not an Athletic N/A brew was indeed non-alcoholic. 4. You'll wait for your drink or food while you can visibly see your server on the showroom floor chitchatting with other servers and employees. You get my point. While all of these incidents could be excusable at a cheaper, more mediocre establishment, Emerald Tavern -was not- that for the longest time. I don't know where or why so many of the talented service staff have left, but it is a shame. Until things improve, I advise you take your business elsewhere.
It's a cute place but the kitchen and bar leaves a lot to be desired. I really like the themed drinks and they even have a cute little game where you can roll a d-20 dice which entitles you to a buck off their mixed drinks. It's nice until you realize it's 14 dollars for a cocktail (that's with the discount). Fish and chips were 18 dollars and not particularly impressive to be honest with you. And if the service made it for it I would understand but I had to ask three times for my water to be filled up after sitting at the bar for 10 minutes with an empty cup of water. The bartenders (plural) weren't even taking anyone else's order they were just putting glasses away or wiping surfaces down. The staff aren't necessarily bad, I'm sure they're sweet people. They just seem inexperienced and don't really have what it takes to understand running a bar. I haven't had a lot of experience with their board game selection but from this experience I don't necessarily have high hopes. If you can't get the little things right, what hope do I have for the big things?

Been here twice. The food is over priced for the quantity and quality. The waitstaff are a massive mixed bag. Saturday morning/early afternoon, the staff was great. Sunday evening... they were pretty bad - ranging from unknowledgable about the menu while being pushy to generally inattentive and forgetful. Oh and they double charged me. Meals and drink were 70 before tip. Got charged the $70 + tip... and additional $50.
We came with a larger group and it was... Not great. The reviews saying you have to beg for service are accurate. The appetizers and drinks were pretty good (although the potato soup sucked and they've phased out several things on the menu and not updated it). Our group all ordered at the exact same time though and some of our people had food brought out within the same reasonable timeframe (not fast, but mostly together or within 5 minutes of each other) while the last two entrees took 35 extra minutes after everyone else's, and that was after us finding our waiter and asking about it a couple of times. We were told "well, there are a lot of tickets.." but the place was empty when we ordered and one of the missing meals was the same thing I ordered, which was... Literally a sandwich. They couldn't get a sandwich out of the kitchen. That meal was for one of the people there for their birthday and I strongly felt theirs should've been comped (wasn't going to make a stink, not my birthday) but they didn't even get an apology. The food got dropped and the guy ran away before they could even ask for a condiment. The price to reserve a table also borders on ridiculous, and the game master was moderately nice but didn't really highlight any games or ask anything about what we wanted to play. We probably won't be back, there are better options.
