Las Palomas is praised for delicious food, margaritas, and fantastic service, especially from staff like Andreas. The atmosphere is beautiful with live music. Some find it overpriced or inconsistent, with complaints about specific dishes like the queso fundido.

Tip: Enjoy the live music, especially on Saturday nights. If you like spicy, choose racheras enchiladas.

This is one of my favorite Mexican food spots across both San Antonio and Austin. The drinks are some of the strongest and best value you'll find around town. The food is excellent... but where people tend to go wrong is that they expect your average Tex-Mex. This is not a Tex-Mex restaurant, so if you're expecting greasy enchiladas and Spanish rice, you may be disappointed. However, if you are interested in real Mexican flavors and good margaritas, you can't go wrong here.
This is my favorite place in to go. When it comes to all-around experience, this is the place. I love coming because of the staff is so friendly, and when it comes to the food, I believe the term is "fire". I dined in for Valentine's Day, and it was fantastic experience. Needless to say, the food is one of the best in Austin!
I had the ceviche tostadas and it is some of the best ceviche I've ever had! Chips and salsa were great, too. We were able to be seated in the back room which allowed us to have a conversation and still enjoy the music. Great service.
Andreas was amazing! He was always ready for the most complex orders, if I owned a restaurant I would hire him in a heartbeat!
Delicious food and margaritas. Great parking. Live music on various nights. The service is fantastic. The menu selection is very good, from appetizers to entrees, you can find something fun to enjoy. I highly recommend Las Palomas.
First and foremost, they accommodate seafood allergies! The staff was so kind and professional. Our server was on point and made sure we were taken care of with our seafood allergy. He was on top of everything! He was always checking on us, refilling our drinks, making sure everything tasted good. He was fabulous!! The food was delicious, hot, fresh, and seasoned well. I loved the live music. They weren't overbearing, and I could still talk to my table with no issues. I loved everything about this place! Clean tables and good menu options. Also, the food was well priced. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area. Thank you for accommodating us!
First time eating here as my wife and I met up with her sister and husband for lunch. We had great service and the food was excellent. The Spicy El Mejor margarita was fantastic. The drinks are not the cheapest, but they also don't rip you off with cheap ingredients or a watered down, tasteless drink, either. Really one of the best margaritas I've ever had. Overall, a great first impression, and we'll go there again next time we're in town.
The President of the University of Austin called Las Palomas "the best Mexican food in Austin." He may have been exaggerating, but you can't go wrong here. The enchiladas are excellent with great vegetarian options. If you like spicy, choose racheras. If you prefer milder, potosinas or spinach are both savory. Kitchen opens at 11am and closes at 2pm for lunch, then reopens for dinner.
The margaritas were truly good. I would happily order them again. 8.5/10. Please learn from my mistake and pass on the queso fundido. It was more veggies than cheese, and the vinegar onions are not complimentary. Just don’t. 0/10.
I can see this place being a best kept secret when it comes to live music and atmosphere. Beautiful on the inside, live music most nights. Had to give it a four stars though because I wasn't entirely happy with the food I ordered, which was the spinach enchiladas. However, The dishes on the menu did seem authentic. However don't let the four stars deter you from stopping in here and enjoying a cozy little meal, I'm sure the rest of the menu is fantastic.
I’ll admit, my first time here was not remarkable. After giving it a second shot, my mind was changed for the better. We had their classic Paloma’s combo, that had chicken, and Cochinita pibil with an enchilada. The fish tacos was also hearty and the tostadas were fresh. The chips and salsa was excellent as well, the chips were crispy and not greasy at all.
Down the road from an appointment I had in Austin the other day. Figured it was close, and I could compare Austin TexMex to San Antonio. The chips were extra crispy and were not a bit greasy. The salsa was balanced and on the spicy side for the “standard”. Typically I will ask for something spicier, but this did nicely. The mix fajitas were a balanced blend of meat, peppers and onions, the comal however was barely warm, let alone hot or sizzling. I also expected hand made corn tortillas and instead had machine made. The cheese, shredded lettuce and sour cream all seemed to be fresh, hand sliced and shredded. The sour cream a traditional thinner Mexican variety, which I use in my own cooking. Worth a visit, off balance if good and bad, but expensive at over $20/ guest for lunch. And in the end….San Antonio wins!
Food was fine. Nothing exciting, but fresh & good. service was prompt and adequate. Not much in the way of atmosphere. We ate indoors. They also have a patio (both beside the parking lot, but patio is screened.)
Longstanding doesn’t always mean great things. The Mexican Martini & Traditional Top Shelf Margarita were stand outs. Fresh squeezed lime, not a premix. The Queso Fundido was just bad. No one should put vinegar soaked vegetables on top of cheese. Not good. The skillet was heated to the point that the cheese we did eat had a burnt taste. Avoid this appetizer. Tortillas were made elsewhere.
To my group and myself the food wasn't favorable. Service was very good. Two people in my group didn't even come close to eating all their food. At $30 a person more was expected.
First time here and pretty disappointed. I ordered the beef fajitas to go for $22 and the portion was really underwhelming. Very little beef, mostly onions, and just 3 tortillas. For that price, I expected a lot more. Definitely didn’t feel like good value and left still hungry. Won’t be rushing back.
First off I felt like a little kid at the bar, they need taller chairs. I ordered the steak tacos expecting guacamole which was stated on the menu but when I asked the bartender about it, he said that the steak tacos don’t come with guacamole. The meat in the steak tacos had no flavor and the meat was really chewy. I was also surprised to be charged $2.00 for chips and salsa, which was never mentioned when the bartender asked if I wanted them.
The atmosphere here is beyond perfect and lovely. So welcoming and inviting!! However, I find that the rice is not good at all and maybe they should consider changing the recipe. I ordered the beef fajitas to go and was extremely shocked to see no beef at all. For over $20 I was not pleased. However, I have had the chicken dish in the past and it was very good. Came with the same rice though which is just not good. Overall I would come back but would genuinely like to see changes with the food because it’s such a great place otherwise.
Didn't advertise fixed menu for VDay, which was incompatible for our party due to dietary restrictions and wildly expensive for what it was, said they would charge us for cancelling reservation when we tried to leave and go elsewhere (as if half the establishment wasn't empty). Only way we could get out of being charged was to order an overpriced drink at the bar. Staff and management were rude to us when we tried to leave. I'm sure the food would have been good but their entitled staff need an attitude adjustment before I would ever try them again.
Not sure how this restaurant has such good reviews. We are vegetarians and the food was horrible - barely any flavor. Way overpriced for the tasteless food they serve. Server was not friendly and like someone else mentioned kept staring at the screen to see how much we tipped. Never coming back again. There are so many other wonderful mexican places in Austin! Save your time and money and go somewhere else!
We’ve tried this place multiple times….it’s overpriced and the food is just ok, at best…and that’s being nice. Overall just really underwhelming. They charge for chips and salsa. A single a la carte taco was $8, dry and not much flavor. The enchiladas were meh, and the soup we had was just not good. The atmosphere is ok and the service was good but if you’re looking for great Mexican food, this is not the place.
