Best way to describe this place is a warm hug. I think the nicest people in the world work here. They make delicious soups and salads. If you’re lucky enough to be there when they have a the asparagus soup or the pumpkin chocolate chip muffin they will change your life. Shout out to Tara and Whitney!
Everything here is excellent. The soup of the day is always soo good. From the food to the service. John and Chelle have been serving excellence for years. Through the good times and the bad in Austin. One of the few good ones still around. I have been a customer since I moved here in 2002. I will be until I'm gone.
How have I lived in Austin since 2020 and never tried this gem until today? It has the quaint atmosphere of cafe from the 90s that most places don’t have anymore. The pastries look and taste amazing, and the asparagus soup was out of the world delicious. Can’t wait to go back for more of everything honestly, but I really look forward to the thick cheesy quiche options they serve.
I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant. It’s the best restaurant around by far. Their soups are incredible .. clam chowder, French onion, cream of asparagus and chili.. they are are outstanding. And the unique other entrees., quiche, boars head sandwiches, Omelettes. You gotta come here! And they have great coffee too! And I gotta say that the Owner John is so hospitable.. great staff., wow
I've never been here, I've always pass this place all the time. But now thst I'm inside of this establishment. WOW! Must come!! They have pastries, coffee, sandwiches, quiche, salads, soups, and serve breakfast. Soda, water, cold or hot tea. Man, I wished I knew before I would've became a regular, I'm just visiting. They play soft music. Jazz, contemporary music. Pretty quiet. No long lines to wait. They serve the food while you sit & wait. You can call in an order. Sorry, Sundays & Mondays are closed. All the pastries/ bread are made fresh everyday.
Loved this place! Will be back again soon. Such a welcoming experience. The two people at the registers were kind and attentive even though there was a slight rush. The food came out quick, and was really good.
John was extremely friendly and greeted my boyfriend and I right away! We were seen and welcomed from the start by him and another worker. The breakfast croissants were amazing and served with love. Can’t wait to come back!
I started coming to San Francisco Bakery & Café years ago for their delicious food, but I’ve kept coming back for the sense of community. It feels like home. In a city where local, family-owned has been the backbone of the community— and, sadly, disappearing over the years- Austin needs places like these. If you’ve never had the pleasure of stopping by for a croissant, loaf of sourdough, or a lovingly prepared sandwich I implore you to make a point of visiting.
Stopped by this local restaurant for lunch. Everything is from scratch. We ordered two French onion soups and split a Union sandwich. We met the owner, John. We told him it was our first time. He brought out samples of 2 soups ( cream chicken and clam chowder), chili and their sour bread. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. We'll be back soon. Need to support good, local bizs.
We stopped into San Francisco Bakery and Café, and it was hands down the best lunch we’ve had in a long time! The menu is full of fresh, scratch-made items, and it really shows in the flavor. We tried the chicken and broccoli quiche with a Caesar salad, the Santa Cruz chicken sandwich, and the clam chowder—every bite was incredible. The staff was friendly and personable, making the experience even better with great conversations. We’re already looking forward to our next visit and trying the cream of asparagus soup, which we’ve heard is a must. Oh, and don’t skip the cheese danishes—they’re absolutely to die for! Highly recommend this gem if you’re in the area.
This place is very charming. The hibiscus planted outside gave the experience a cheery start. They sell “yesterday’s bread” at a discount, so we bought a loaf to take home. There was a slight mix up where they gave our loaf to someone else, so they gave us a fresh loaf instead! We sat outside, sipping coffee. I had the breakfast sandwich with veggie sausage. The bread was great but the sandwich was dry if I’m being honest. It needed sauce or some fresh greens to wake it up a bit. My partner ordered the veggie quiche though, and ohmygoodness… that thing slaps 👏🏽 I honestly didn’t know that quiche could be delicious like that. Is there a list for Best Quiche In America?
It feels great knowing that we have such a wonderful local business within walking distance of our home. Everyone there, especially John (the owner) are extremely friendly and it seemed like the employees knew the names of every customer that came in! On our first visit we just got coffee and tea and John offered us a free baked good of our choosing (we picked the cinnamon bun and do not regret it!) to welcome us in. We came back for lunch the next weekend and we got some sandwiches which we loved! And once again John gave us some free asparagus soup because he really wanted us to try it. We also left with some croissants and a baguette. Everything we have had there has been delicious and everyone is so friendly! A must-visit for anyone in the area!
the tuna salad sandwich tasted delicious. I wish I had known that the portion of tuna was going to be inadequate for the bread ratio, I would have gotten an extra scoop. I had it a few years ago and the bread to tuna ratio was much better. good, clean flavors... just a little disappointed in the portion balance
Soup and salad disappointing. New England clam soup mighty short of clam flavor and content. Cesar salad crisp but croton laden and dressing had no hint of anchovies or sharpness. Nice place, though, I’ll order differently next time.
Went there for breakfast takeout. Serena was so nice, she explained the menu briefly and had nice smiles. Meeting nice ppl in the morning makes my day so I would come back if she's still there. I had a cinnamon roll and a decaf latte, my husband had a breakfast sandwich and cold brew. ($27 without gratuity) Sandwiches are a bit pricey, but taste good like it's homemade.
Staff is nice and I like the vibes. Cozy. Good customer flow but not too too packed. Think the food is mid and edible but could be improved. More sauces. More flavor. Slightly less dense sourdough. Cup of soup is slightly overpriced at over $7. Whole loaves of breads are cheap and priced well. Wish they had a different side than just the chips. Wish they did pickles. I wish they would use a different deli meat provider. Don’t think places should still carry Boar’s Head after the scandal last year where the company got in trouble for severe sanitation failures, including mold, pests, and product residue.
ordered the ham, egg and cheese sandwich and the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. in my opinion the egg and bacon are way overcooked. the egg is made omelette style and it's completely browned on the outside killing the flavor. the bacon was cooked so much it became almost hard to eat. staff was nice and I like the atmosphere but I wouldn't go back for the food.
Diners beware. I really want to like this place. I’ve been multiple times and unfortunately the food was bland every time, nothing stood out. My last visit I ordered an omelette only to be served the egg breakfast. Toast came out burnt, bacon was burnt. Strangely a good handful of reviews use the same keywords and are written very similarly 🤔 Will back, just hoping for the experience I’ve always desired from this place.
