For a little Chinese restaurant in the “Cowboy Capital” I was quite surprised! Food was fresh & delicious! I don’t think they add MSG - because I wasn’t sick after stuffing myself on General Tso’s. Keep up the good work - I’ll be back!
Great place... I must admit though... I am a little biased, I'm the manager. But it is really great Chinese food in the most unsuspecting of locations. Stop if you're just in the neighborhood or even make the drive, IT'S WORTH THE DRIVE!
I've eaten here a few times now once or twice before I moved to bandera and a few times sense. They have great wait staff the portions they serve are nice and you always have enough to take home. The food taste fresh and the variety of options is fairly large. The atmosphere inside is clean and bright a bit cozy and fit a nicely with the theme of a Chinese food restaurant.
Great Chinese food always. But i really wanted to post this because my kids and I recently went here and had the best waiter for real he was constantly attentive but not pushy at all and he had great suggestions. He also kept my kids laughing and was very informed about the town and was able and willing to answer all my kids silly questions.
My dear family and friends and I thoroughly enjoy eating at the China Bowl restaurant. I usually order either the shrimp with vegetables or cashew chicken. It is an excellent and relaxing meeting place. It is super clean with a welcoming environment. The owners are very friendly, hospitable and accommodating to your needs!!!!
Great parking, easy in and out. Greeted at door, escorted to our choice of a table. Staff was attentive, food was fast, fresh, well made, excellent presentation. Restaurant was clean, quiet even with eight tables. Lunch is a future trip. Our new go to resturants when on road!
Best Chinese food in Bandera. Been here 5 times and try something different every time and it’s amazing. The twice cooked pork is to die for. Sesame chicken is amazing with Thai peppers. All the host have been wonderful . Will be my go to once my utilities are on and I get in my house.
One of the best Chinese restaurants I've ever been to. And I've been to a lot. I ordered shrimp and vegetables. Cooked perfectly.
Really good Chinese food. Now they recently got a new manager and the orders are coming out correct, the place smells better as if it’s being cleaned finally, the people that work there are always smiling and polite. Great job.
The hot and sour soup changed and is now mostly inedible to me. Very sad that they keep lowering the standards of this once great restaurant. I've eaten here on occasion for years. service has always been excellent.
First time visiting this restaurant. The staff are very friendly and the food was excellent! Recommend Beef with vegetables :). My husband could not stop talking about how good their tea is! We will definitely return!
As always the food was good
We always get our food to go from here, but the wait to pay is much longer because the hostess is often seating customers and taking payments. She/he is often Very busy!
First time ordering food here. Ordered three different plates, and three different soups. Vegetables were crisp and fresh, everything else was very good as well. Will definitely pick up food from here next time I'm in Bandera.
Food is good, very hot and filling portions. The staff are fast and friendly. The menu has a good variety. I grab take-out from here often.
I got 2 orders of steamed dumplings for my visit and they were very good. Staff was friendly and food was ready quickly.
I have been there since you open up. Since day one It's been the best fresh food to this day,But it's a little sad that the prices sre forcing us to eat at home more often. I still Make an effort to go at least once a month.
Almost always pretty delicious!!! Lived out of town for a few years, and nothing was ever as good! Also, pretty fast!
Great local place to eat. The food was amazing and very warm. The staff was nice and helped us. Would eat here again.
I love their food. I had a slight problem with my order tonight. I called them and politely explained why I was not happy with the order. From the lady answering the phone to the waitress making sure I was satisfied in the end. Great job to management and employees. You are creating winners in life. I'll be back tomorrow for Crawfish. Thank you.
We drove in from Splendora only to find the Medina river was almost dried up. Very disappointing. So we drove around and this place : China Bowl and we were shocked. This place is awesome!! Some Chinese restaurants serve this egg drop soup that’s either concentrated or comes from a can,, this place no way, you can taste the freshness even in their egg drop soup. My wife ordered salt pepper shrimp, she loved it,, she even ate the fried rice, said it was delicious.. I was amazed! I got the sweet and sour chicken,, way better than I expected, seriously we will be coming back. And the cherry on top was our waitress Sheila she was so awesome very attentive to our request and our cups of sweet delicious tea, she really contributed to our wonderful dining experience. Most certainly the best I have experienced in a very long time.
Loved that it wasn't packed, enjoyed the food-lumch portion was enough for my lunch and dinner even though the portions are not excessive in size. The food had a lot of flavor! Customer service was exceptional! I saw many said customer service was subpar but that was not our experience.
First time here. Was in Bandera for the day. Some friends recommended it. It was very good!! Had the chicken with cashews, egg drop soup and egg roll. We had a big group and our waiter took great care of us. Will be back!!!
This place was delicious!! Passed through Bandera on my way home we spotted it and stopped. My 4yo tore up the plate of lo Meir. When this dude sits through the whole meal without picking a fight with his brother you know the food is good! Service was great, nice environment and clean.
Very nice staff. Good food and plenty
Genuinely good people serving delicious food at good prices. Involved with community.
The food was absolutely delicious, we strongly recommend the General Tso’s Chicken and Egg Drop Soup! The fried rice was a bit dry but we did order towards the end of the day so a fresh batch of rice may not have been readily available. Amazing experience overall! Very kind staff.
We love everything about it. The food is great and prepared in a timely manner.
Super friendly staff, especially our waitress, April. The food was also really good. The Twice Cook Pork and the Egg Foo Young were both amazing. The sauce for the Egg Foo Young was the best I've ever had. This isn't just a great place for a small town, it really is great. Live near Bandera? You should come regularly. Visiting Bandera? Make sure you eat here during your stay.
I got the lettuce wraps and they were amazing
Ordered to go. Food was ready when they said it would be and was very hot. Hot enough to travel 45 minutes and be at a good temperature when got there. Then there was the itself got this for mothers day and everyone was very pleased with everything.
👍🏽DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH💎 I had a bad experience here two years ago and let me tell you something’… This place has surpassed my expectations and I am very pleased and this is coming from a guy from Philadelphia who lives 20 minutes from Chinatown. Service is impeccable.
Usually order takeout and it's always fresh and delicious! Some of our favorites include the crab rangoon, egg rolls, lemon chicken and beef lo mein. I'm sure there are many other tasty options but we haven't tried a lot of others because our favorites are so great. Service is quick and staff are very friendly. Prices are reasonable, especially for the large serving sizes. All around a great experience and some of the best Chinese food we've found in this part of Texas, including in San Antonio. We always order extra so we can have leftovers the next day! Worth a drive if you're craving delicious Chinese food, even if you don't live in Bandera!
China Bowl in Bandera is a hidden gem! Not in it's hard to find but it is really great food and well priced. It is consistently good and we've been going there for years. The restaurant is always clean and they are always nice. Even when it's really busy. If you want Chinese food, it's a solid go to! And they always have specials if you want to try new things. **Most tables accommodate 4-6 but I believe they have a party room.
We visited The China Bowl Restaurant today for some of the finest Chinese Food we’ve had in quite some time. The Owner met us upon arrival and the service is only equaled by that of the finest 5 Star restaurants. A Real Class Act!!!! The Chinese Food we ordered was tender and cooked to perfection. It’s a very clean restaurant and the staff waits on ya like you’re royalty. I recommend everyone visiting Bandera, Tx should stop in and experience excellence.
Been here 3 times now, never disappoints. Always delicious and reasonable prices. Clean and spacious. Always welcomed with smiling and friendly staff. Love their funny quick come backs. Usually have the General Tso's Chicken, always delicious and large portion. This time I had the sesame beef with Sriracha. I've got my new favorite. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Feast after our 5hrs hike! From Lost Maples we tried to find a worthy restaurant to go to, to eat our heart out. And found this asian restaurant in Bandera. We were assisted immediately and have our order taken and served in sequence. We had our soup (egg drop and wonton) and appetizer (egg roll and crab rangoon) Both of the soup tastes so well! It just help me calmed and feel home. While the egg roll, you know you are paying a real deal - you get all the ingredient you need. While the crab rangoon it just so generous with the cream cheese. The staff were just nice and attentive. By the way, I am comparing these foods to all of the asian food we visited in San Antonio, Texas and other states that serves the food. General Tso was on point - one of the bests we had. The chicken still crispy even soaked with sauce. While the Clay Hotpot was just giving away all the meat and veggies they can. I One more plus in this restaurant, the water doesn’t taste off - one thing we were so happy. This is one of the treasures in Bandera. And a good place to go to after a long hike or trek.
My boyfriend and I had dinner here after a long day on the road. We both like different things, but we definitely both found delicious food. They have the best fried rice and lo mein I have had. They serve a good amount of food for the money. We were seated fast, had great service, and got our food quick quick. We will for sure go again.
The food is cooked perfectly. Very generous portions. Speed of service is fantastic. Truly the best tasting ice tea in town. Which I know sounds strange, I don't judge restaurants by their tea, but there is something soo smooth about it. The facility is clean, handicapped accessible, clean bathrooms.
Service was excellent! The ladies were so sweet. Food was good. Husband’s dish was better than mine! They topped his off with peanuts. Delicious!
Food is pretty good and service is not bad. There is a lot of turn around with employees so it is very common to get a server who is in training, but everyone is always nice and helpful. Prices are a little high, but it is a small town so that's to be expected. Definitely recommend
Good fried rice, served with egg roll and soup on lunch menu. We had great service. Shrimp were fat and tasty in my dish. Food could have been a little hotter. We would return to this restaurant if in the area again.
Have only done takeout. They def need to figure out how to cook the noodles and some other dishes when the order is "to go." We have gotten to go orders 3 x and the noodles and some other dishes are always overcooked when we get home, 20 minutes after pick-up. I am used to big city delivery, so this is a thing for me. I'll bet if we eat in the restaurant, everything would be on point - food is yummy, veggies are fresh, and servings are generous.
Best Chinese food anywhere nearby. Friendly staff, great for takeout because they prepare it quickly, but great for dine-in because they have a nice atmosphere. I love that the kitchen doesn't mind adjusting recipes for dietary restrictions if you ask. A great place we will enjoy again very soon!
Was very nice, sat outside on upper deck. Coffee was good, lots of option. Ordered gluten free breakfast sandwhich. Bun was as expected, the sausage and cheese were good. Will go back.
The server seemed new but did a good job and was attentive to our table. I really like the spice used on my beef, scallops, and brocolli dish. The fried rice had decent flavor but could have been hotter temperature when served. I would visit again. Generous servings so I had a take home box.
Good food and initial service. We had a little trouble getting the waiter’s attention. We had to ask for more drinks and the bill. They were not busy. We go there several times a year.
Love this place, although, most of the time when you order shrimp it is overcooked and chewy. Shrimp dishes are very small compared to the price point. Most chicken and pork dishes are absolutely awesome. Absolutely love the fried wontons with the sweet and sour sauce as an appetizer. The fried crab rangoons are absolutely out of this world! The staff is super friendly and accommodating.
The service is expedient, the food is pretty good. I had the house rice and it was delicious. The egg foojoung is good and presentable. The facilities are in very good condition. The reason I give 4 stars is because of the annoying flies I encountered while at the restaurant, other than that you will have an overall good experience. If you are visiting check this place out. It will not break your wallet.
We had an excellent meal here last night. It wasn't perfect but kind of unexpected... We had a Wonton soup that wasn't quite traditional, lots of greens/veggies on top that were crunchy and quite nice since being in town here eating a lot of foods that don't have a big vegetable presence. The calamari was nice and tender but the breading was not crunchy. ( The waitress later told us we could request it to be fried crunchier). The highlight of my meal was the Garlic Shrimp. This dish literally had everyone in the restaurant asking what it was....a LOUD sizzling could be heard from across the room and the dish was "popping" and "crackling" as the waitress carried it high above her. She actually wouldn't serve it to me until it had settled down....I ordered mine with extra spice and it was just excellent. The veggies we're served steamed on the side and all you had to do was set them on the sizzling plate to heat them up a little more in the sauce. The shrimp we're well cooked and flavorful. Watch your tongue though, that plate stays hot for a long time!!! Husband had Garlic chicken and pork egg foo young and also enjoyed his entrees. I wasn't super impressed with the egg foo young/didn't care for the gravy, slightly sweet to me but there were big pieces of meat present. The service was perfect and even servers that weren't waiting on us, would check on us. The lack of five stars is due to the atmosphere. "New" country music was playing (yuk), would have preferred some thing more Zen. Husband said they could jazz up the decor and it would be perfect. Overall, this place was darn good!
Good food, but I wasn't very happy with the service, girls laughing at the register, we had to wait to seated, the waitress kept forgetting things we asked for. I think she was new, but she didnt even noticed we needed tea refills. We couldn't get her attention. Tea is expensive enough, I'd like to get a second glass.
Food was decent. Our waitress forgot about us. A good number of table seated after us received their food before us. The tall waitress was fast and attentive with her tables. Try to get her.
We had 4 family members eat there. It was mediocre tasting. We had 4 different food plates. I shared some with my son. Now..., This COULD POSSIBLY BE A COINCIDENCE, however in the middle of the night both my son and I got sick with a violent upset stomach, running to the bathroom ect. By the next day the symptoms stopped. I just dont know for sure......We have not been around any sick people. I hope it was not from the food.
I had the sweet and sour chicken and crab rangoons and wonton soup. They were delicious and the tea was tasty but I felt sick after eating here. A couple hours after eating here I felt really bad. So the food is good and the people are nice but come at your own risk.
Some of the food was good. The rice, lo mein, and egg drop soup were the only things we really liked. We tried 2 of their vegetarian options and we were very disappointed. My husband ordered a sweet tea and it tasted fishy?... Pretty weird. Overall we most likely won't be coming back. A few other people in town mentioned that we probably wouldn't like it and I agree. The reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of one is this is one of the first restaurants I've been to in town that doesn't smell weird/bad when you walk in and the servers were all pretty nice.
This has been our favorite place that we weigh all others against, until today. I don't know what happened, but the food quality has taken a dive. Hopefully, this is a one time thing and not a trend. The egg drop soup was no where near as "eggy" as before. The fried rice had sizable chunks of undercooked onion in it. The sweet and sour pork was more dry than moist. The square dinner plates have been replaced by oval ones with no lip on them, which would have been fine, but the black bean sauce on the Basil Chicken was soooo thin, it pooled and ran over the edge of the plate and made a river across the table toward my husband. I had to go get extra napkins to stop the flow. Also the Basil Chicken (which I had been told was the same as the Thai Basil Chicken on the lunch menu) had no heat unless I bit into one of the jalapenos on the plate. Needless to say, we were disappointed with our long awaited road trip to Bandera for the best Chinese food in several counties. We heard new ownership? Perhaps new chef? Not sure, but we'll give it one more try before we search for a new favorite. In the past it has been 5 stars all the way. We hope to see it return soon!
Food was ok for the price. Nothing to write home about. Some of my food was on the colder side. I didn't complain though. Prices were fairly low so it evened out I guess. Waiter was REALLY GOOD at his job though. 👏 He was great! Very good service!
Food at lunch time is great. Fried rice is on point. If you go after 5 fried rice is burnt🤷 not sure why but it's Everytime.
It was good but not excellent as far as Chinese food is concerned.
The restaurant has gone through several owners and food quality and quantity has deteriorated with the current owner.
I was very disappointed with the food that we ordered, I have eaten at China Bowl many times throughout the years and this was by far our worst experience. I ordered take out and I should have checked my order upon pickup, so the missing egg rolls and crab Rangoon could have been avoided if I would have checked my order. The wanton soup was not edible, the wanton was extremely mushy, way over cooked and the ball of meat which was outside the wanton was disgusting. The fried rice was undercooked and lacking flavor and did not seem fresh. I ordered the triple delight, the chicken was undercooked and the shrimp was overcooked. The young lady that took my order over the phone and waited on me when I picked up my order was very professional. I believe it might be awhile before I dine here again. I know we all have bad days now and again, but the entire meal was not a positive example of my past meals at China Bowl.
I ordered take out, told it would take 20 min,ok sounds normal. Get there to pick up waited 45 minutes while other pick up and new orders were getting there food and leaving. I finally asked about my order I was told the cook lost my ticket. I stayed patient was offered a soup, really a soup..finally got my order got home and food was under cook, and wrong, when I called to speak to mgr he was to busy and was told they will give me 20% off next visit and left it at that...hey lady you never even got my name...horrible experience will not go back
I gave it at 2 because I ordered sweet and sour chicken and the chicken taste it old and dry and so did the shrimp shrimp tasted little on the rubber East Side so it wasn't very good at all I was very disappointed. The people there was nice and the waitress, she was a very nice young lady.
They take advantage of being the only Chinese place around. They have NEVER gotten our order correct. Only place Ive been to, when you order a dinner you have to pay extra for an egg roll. We order 4 dinners and we have to order egg rolls extra ONLY TO NOT GET THEM. Rice was dry and burned tasting. So almost $70 down the drain .... AGAIN.
Service was great, my son's enjoyed his food. Some of my chicken was raw and unable to eat but 2 pieces before finding raw chicken. I then had to cut open every piece and showed the server that 2 other piece were raw. Manager told me it was sauce. Yet the server watched me cut it open. No sauce on it. Manager came over and never offered to remake it or even look at anything. He just told me sorry you are mistaken and that is sauce. He didnt care the server watched me cut up another piece with the same problem. Paid for food I couldn't eat. Horrible experience.
With the old owners and cooks gone like Elvis has left the building the food tastes horrible. There is no flavor the hot and sour soup is really viniguray and flavor. They were supposed to continue with the old recipes and they didn't. We will not be going back to this place. So said because we lived it when it was with the other staff
Atmosphere was great our waitress was amazing very attentive but the food was not so Chinese.I got the chicken lo mein and it tasted like spaghettios it looks like ground chicken mixed with bbq sauce noodles. I thought I was trippin and my husband tasted it before I even said anything he said hey this tastes like spaghettios and I said I knew it! I thought my taste buds were off. Anywho food looked mehhhhh smelled delicious though that was the sad part. Egg drop soup was good thank goodness I didn’t eat my food. Oh and let’s not forget to add my husband got food poisoning and our bike ride was cut early due to him being sick from his food. We only ate there and instantly after stared feeling symptoms.
Ordered the sesame shrimp and the shrimp were way overcooked. The sauce was just a brown water with absolutely no flavor. The broccoli was swimming in the brown sesame water. I tried to eat it and couldn't so I called and asked for a refund. Was told by Luke I'd have to being the food back. So I drove back up there and was refused a refund because he said I had eaten half of the meal which simply was not true. I was refused a refund and told to leave. Really bad food and not even an apology by the management that I wasn't happy with my food. It's ok Luke my voice is my money and I won't be spending any of it at your restaurant.
4/14/23 Ordered dinner on my way to my ranch to eat in. Got to China Bowl and the staff had mistakenly packed the order to go. I sat down in the dining room to eat and was approached by a new manager (with beard) who began ranting and raving about the cost of to go containers. He INSISTED THAT I COULD NOT EAT IN THE DINING ROOM. HE INSISTED THAT I LEAVE. I explained that I had ordered eat in. He rather bizarrely blamed the staff's mistake on me. I called to get his name for this review and he refused to identify himself. Instead he LAUGHED. China Bowl has traditionally been one of my favorite restaurants. The food is great but staff too often ruin the meal with their antics. I will not return until the owners get the staff under control. To treat paying guests as I was treated by this manager last night is not acceptable in ANYONE'S imagination. Edit: As the nonsensical response from the owner shows, either (1) They think this happened in Boerne (it happened in Bandera) or (2) They are saying go to Boerne if you don't like the way my Bandera China Bowl is run. Please take note. Avoid this restaurant until it is back to its former standards.
I hated it soooo much... They got my moms order wrong and when I asked for a refill i never got the drink back the chicken tasted weird and in my moms food there were only two little pieces of jalapenos which she didn't like. My mom wanted more than just two little jalapenos.... That is why I'm go being this place a bad rating - curly haired girl 3-24-18 😡
Ordered chicken cashew. Worst ever. Had a weird plastic taste to it. They need to get sone real cooks in the back. Horrible!
Food was excellent. Our waiter was awesome but the owner was extremely rude because we changed our mind and decided to eat in instead of taking to go. The owner berated us loud enough for all the customers to hear. Two of the wait staff came over to us and apologized for their boss's rudeness. We had been customers here for over 10 years. No longer customers now.
Do not eat here. The servers might seem nice at first, but take forever to bring out your order which might not even be what you asked for and will often having put out attitudes about having to check up on you. They will refuse to serve you at all the previous time you ate at the establishment if you don't leave them tips on the table even if you leave them tips via card when paying at the register when you don't have spare change. To sum it up. A horrible experience all around.
Most people exaggerate or over extend the experience when it’s bad . So here’s the facts about mine. After many years of ordering food for take out and being happy every time I’ll share not go back again. After I got home and saw the order was less than half in portion size than What I had preferred before I drop back to explain it was not what I expected . The manager said you got what ordered . He offered no option for me other than take It or leave it . So I left it . He had absolutely no concern for my experience what’s so ever . I found that I received a lunch portion not the dinner one. So if you call make sure you clarify because it’s not only at the gas pump people it’s everywhere. I get like my business was not important . They kept my food amd my money . I’ll never return . They need consultation and training for service . Your a number at this place . Owner and manager has poor customer service skills .
It’s a sad day when regular customers at China Bowl get better service at Burger King. We know because that’s where we went to eat instead. It wouldn’t have been quite as bad if it had been a first time occurrence. This has been happening to us on several visits. Two to three parties that arrived after us would get served first. Today after three tables I tried to wave down the manager who was two or three booths away. It’s possible he didn’t hear me as I don’t like to draw attention to myself. However the fact that he didn’t look our way but scanned the rest of the restaurant seemed telling. It felt like we were being purposely ignored. I asked the host if we were going to get service or should we leave after the fourth party was served. I was a little frustrated because this time no one acknowledged our presence. In the past there were always apologies and assurance that someone would be with us shortly. When the host talked to a waiter, the waiter waved us off dismissing us. Not cool. After the fifth party with two already getting their food, my husband, a disabled Veteran having an exceptionally bad pain day went to speak to the manager, he was told they’d get to us in time and then the manager waited on table number six that was served before us. Frustrated my husband said they’d better get us some service or we’d leave. We’ll, don’t EVER tell the manager he’d better do something, even if it’s to ensure you stay because he said “I’d better? No man tells me I’d better do something!” That’s when we were told to leave. The manager did a good show trying to make my husband look bad, and to some I’m sure he succeeded. I don’t know who there was more important than us, but I truly hope they had a good meal.
I ordered food from the Bandera tx location half way through eating my food i found a long black hair in it i have dyed red hair absolutely disgusting this isnt the first time either it has happened to several of my friends ive found hard plastic in my food when i confronted the restaurant they refused to do anything about it i tried calling them this time around only to be hung up on im definitely going to contact the health department because this is ridiculous
First off the reviews come from Bandera so that should tell you something. Numerous times placing an order there is something missing. The same story, I'm so sorry, you can come back and get it. DAH, you need to specifically ask for sweet and sour for egg rolls.
Bought some chicken dishes and a beef and broccoli plate to go, got food poisoning from all of it, There were MULTIPLE blonde hairs in our food spanning across 4 dishes. Server behind the counter did not look like she cared whatsoever, she wasn't mean just not very enthusiastic about serving us, basically just dropped a couple menus in front of us. Some of the food tasted and smelled like it had been Drenched in enough garlic to make you want to throw up and the smell of it, and most it tasted like if the chicken was thrown into a bucket of expired fish, just a horrible experience all around, if you want dinner for between 30 and 50$ just go to the Mendozas Mexican restaurant in the shopping center across from dairy queen
