Wonderful spot to dine in Basalt, right along the river. Great indoor and outdoor seating options. Our server José was so friendly and lovey all evening. Every dish we had — from the gazpacho, arancini, free range salad, to the roast chicken, Colorado corn ravioli, salmon, and burger — were all delicious. We also enjoyed our cocktails! Our party of four loved every last bit of food in a great setting as the sun set. Highly recommend, the flavors, plating, and size of the dishes will not disappoint!

A Culinary Revelation in the heart of Basalt. Officially. a game Changer. From the moment we walked into this gem of a restaurant, we knew we were in for something extraordinary but nothing could’ve prepared us for what Chef Luis Contreras has created here. This isn’t just New American cuisine it’s a reimagining, a rebirth, a revolution on a plate. This place was not the same before him. Every dish that emerged from the kitchen was a masterclass in balance, innovation, and soul. Think bold yet refined flavors, seasonal ingredients elevated with technique that never feels pretentious, and plating that borders on art. The kind of food that makes you pause mid conversation because your taste buds demand your full attention. The chef’s vision is clear and unwavering. every plate is consistent in its excellence, and yet each one surprises you. You can tell this isn’t about trends. This is craft. This is passion. This is the type of food that sets the new standard for what dining in this area should be. From the Incredible Cocktails, a magical cheese board full of flavours, the best hamburgers in this valley and the exquisite pastas and meats! OMG the desserts were the best❤️ And it’s not just the food—it’s the way the entire experience feels curated without being stiff. The atmosphere is warm, the service effortless, and you leave not just full, but inspired. Chef Luis has changed the game, he even came to our table to say hi and make sure everything was luke we expected! It truly exceeded our expectations and if this is the future of New American dining, we want a front row seat. There is a reason the restaurant is always full! This is the kind of restaurant that cities build reputations around. We will be back 100%.

March 2025 Okay, I'm kind of obsessed with this place! We had a fabulous meal here on our first night in Glenwood Springs/Basalt and I would go back again in a heartbeat! Just the view from our table of Basalt River Park at sunset was divine, never mind all the adorable hairy coo decor. We started with the Bavarian pretzel bites and discovered that I'm actually in love with Düsseldorf mustard. The elote off the cob was the perfect side complement to our mains, NY Strip and braised short ribs. There was simply no room for dessert, though I was definitely eyeing the skillet chocolate chip cookie. Definitely worth the drive to this little town and this fantastic restaurant!

Had a lovely dinner here with family. The atmosphere is contemporary with rustic finishes. It was very busy and loud but also created a fun environment. The menu was creative with plenty of variety for everyones tastes. The food was excellent, cooked perfectly, and flavorful with good portions. The service was also stellar with enough staff to ensure all needs are taken care of. Will definitely return here and highly recommend.

Really nice place to dine in. 2 steps from the river, perfect for a digestive walk in the nature after an amazing meal. Renee was very friendly and professional! I had a blast. Highly recommended.

Great vibe. Yummy cocktails (old fashioned, barrel aged Manhattan, pomegranate martini). Burrata share plate had roasted brussels sprouts, olives, pickled beets, and other veggies. Duck bao were amazing. Then the entrees. Short rib falling off the bone was to die for. The pan seared trout was incredible. Chorizo bolognese was solid. The burger was a bit dry but had yummy cheese sauce, but I’d skip it. Too full for dessert but the options looked enticing.

What a lovely surprise in downtown Basalt. Crispy duck wings, killer Mac n cheese and a perfect smash burger. We wanted to eat outside because the weather was unbelievable but next time we are going to enjoy our fare inside amongst the fabulous artwork!

Really yummy food and great service. I called to get a table and the manager told me unfortunately they were booked. After I hung up a few minutes later The manager called me back and said that if we could get there quickly they would have a table for us for 2 hours. Luckily we were right around the corner at tipsy trout! Got a great table outside for the dogs. Have drinks at tipsy trout next to the river then head here for dinner the burrata board is a must!

Lovely atmosphere, nice dim lighting, pierogi was very well put together and delicious, great wine selection and owner Steve was a great host and checked on our table several times.

Free Range has a contemporary look with a rustic charm of the Roaring Fork Valley. The farm-to-table approach takes your tastebuds on a delectable journey of local, responsibly farmed, freshly harvested ingredients without hormones or antibiotics, while supporting the local Colorado farming and ranching communities. You MUST try the Chili Honey Pork Chop!!! Steve and Robin Humble are gracious hosts that make you feel welcomed and part of the Free Range family. The staff is the highlight of the whole experience! They make you feel as if you are the only patrons in the restaurant making sure all your needs are met. Shout out to Anthony! Make reservations in advance as Friday nights have live music with the very talented Rodrigo Arreguin!

I can’t find any thing to improve! This place is a gem! Ditch Aspen & head to Basalt (Yes, Basalt). Food, atmosphere, service - Free Range Kitchen has it all going on. And we got to enjoy good live music on top of it. Thanks for a wonderful dining experience!

Only disappointing thing is that I didn't take a photo to show you how good the food is! Chef Kamron makes the best dishes in the valley. Every experience here is great thanks to Josue, Seth and Ryan. You guys rock!

Perfectly-crafted dishes, high-design environment in a lovely setting, next to a river. Like having a top- notch NYC dining experience in laid-back Basalt. Can't say enough good things about the food here.

Came in for dinner with a large group (6 of us) and had a great time. We had a reservation and we’re seated immediately. They have a great wine list and the Som was very helpful and friendly. All the food we had was delicious, and the pacing of dishes was good. I will certainly be going back next time I am in town.

Great spot for great food. Been here at least 5 times, usually a group of 6-8, after a day on the river, and the staff is amazing. I love the pork chop!!

We recently had the pleasure of dining at Free Ranger Kitchen in Basalt, Colorado. The restaurant offers a variety of interesting dishes that are both creative and delicious. The service was outstanding, with attentive and friendly staff who made us feel welcome. We especially enjoyed the ROASTED ELOTE OFF THE COB and the BRUSSELS SPROUTS side dishes, which we had as appetizers. They were both outstanding and set the tone for the rest of the evening. We also selected an Open Range Syrah from Washington, recommended by the sommelier, which we thoroughly enjoyed. It paired perfectly with our meal and added to the overall dining experience. To top it all off, we had the SKILLET CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE with caramel sauce, chocolate crumble, and vanilla gelato for dessert. It was a delightful end to a great meal. Overall, Free Ranger Kitchen is a must-visit in the Basalt area.

We have dined twice in the last week at Free Range and are so thrilled. The new space is very welcoming, warm and vibrant. Everyone in our party loved the choice of dishes and outstanding presentations. We love the local ingredients used in a very creative ways. The trout with horseradish is a favorite and last night the Cod special was off the charts delicious. The beat salad was the best I have ever had and you must try the flourless chocolate cake. All of the staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. Our server Baker made our Valentine’s dinner with our friends a very special evening.

First time going, and it was excellent. Lively but not too loud, the lighting was perfect, and the food made it hard to hold a conversation since you couldn’t get enough of it in your mouth. Andrew was an amazing server and a great guy, he took good care of us and made sure we had everything we needed.

I love this restaurant so much! It is my favorite restaurant in the valley as it ticks all the boxes... fabulous food, my favorite spicy margarita in the valley, great live music, and warm and friendly service. The owners, Robin and Steve, are always buzzing around making sure that everyone is happy and comfortable. Sometimes I prefer to just sit with a friend at their cozy bar. The energy and vibe in this place is beyond amazing! I can't wait for summer when we can sit outside along the Roaring Fork River!

We had a great meal. I especially enjoyed the salmon entree, which was perfectly prepared with delicious sauces and accompaniments. Everyone in our group was happy with their drink. We ate outside and enjoyed a very pleasant setting on their patio. Great service.

Out of respect for the restaurant industry, supporting local and the work it takes to get wholesome food on a plate. The French onion soup is 🤌🏼 the burger & truffle fries also 🤌🏼. Sorry for my out-of-line first review. It was based on a bitterness I feel towards dining, inflation, the cost of living in this valley and not so much your individual restaurant and I realize that wasn’t fair. Keep up the great work

Robin and Steve, the owners were invaluable in helping me plan a 70th birthday celebration in Free Range. Robin was extremely friendly, flexible and accommodating. She and their entire staff truly made it an unforgettable night! We could not have been more pleased with the hand selected wines, apps and dinner. Highly recommend this establishment for a special event (location is stunning and charming) or just a nice night out.

This is the best meal I've had in Basalt in awhile, the pork belly dishes and pork were the best things on the menu, service was great too.

It’s my second time dining in this spot and I would say I had a great time. The first time I came in was only for starters . I was surprised how big the charcuterie board was.It got us filled up so we weren’t able to get entrees. The crab cakes tasted good too. The second time was really the full course . We enjoyed the pork belly starter that was paired with the fresh watermelon. We had the tenderloin for entree which was okay . The corn ravioli on the other hand was delicious. We finished it off with their tasty and sweet chocolate cookie skillet 😋 The cocktails were good too . We had a bit of delay with our food but over all the experience was great. Our servers were really nice and attentive. I recommend this spot .

We ate on the patio. The town is doing a lot of construction in this area right now, but I’m sure it will be great once it’s done. I enjoyed my meal wholeheartedly. We had the tacos to start, which were juicy and well-flavored, but a bit messy. I had the salmon special for my main course, and it was excellent. Perfectly cooked with bright flavors. The 1 star reduction was for my husband’s meal, the pork chop, which was rather overwrought with too much sauce and confusing flavors. He also found the meat to be dry. The churro sundae was also a throwaway. Overall, a good experience with some room for improvement!

This was our first dinner at the new location. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the live music. Lovely ambience - the restaurant is modern, very lively, and the the patio is spacious. We enjoyed the atmosphere. The prices are very reasonable 👏 The views from the patio are not very scenic but sitting outside listening to pleasant live music makes the experience nice. The food is flavorful and has an awesome aesthetic appeal (see pictures!). We had the ceviche, buratta board, brussel sprouts as appetizers; the trout, coconut curry with shrimp, and burger with fries as main course; the soft serve ice cream and skillet cookie for dessert. Everything was good except for the ceviche. I wouldn’t recommend it. I’m a big fan of ceviche, did not like it at all. The skillet cookie was extremely sweet, my friend who is a sugar addict was hardly able to eat one third of it. Compliments to the bartender for the best spicy paloma I’ve ever had. Better than the ones I drank in Cabo San Lucas two weeks ago. Outstanding. The service was okay, our waitress wasn’t very attentive. I wasn’t able to order a second drink for a very long time. I guess she saved me from drinking more than 2 Palomas because they were so good that I was probably going to end up drinking 4😂 But the restaurant was very busy and she seemed to have a lot of tables. We definitely didn’t feel rushed. Overall, a great restaurant in downtown Basalt. I would recommend it for its ambience, outdoor seating, affordable prices, and live music. Most food options are delicious and creative. We’ll go back to try more.

We enjoy the food. Last time we were there, live music was offered - we thought wrong kind of music for this place. It was super loud. Many old songs were sang by one guy. Would have been nice if the music choice was something more soft and relaxing that we could talk at our table while we had dinner. It was like some kind of cheap local dive bar entertainment in a movie. There were two old people dancing among tables for many songs. ??? This restaurant had totally different and much better vibe before. Just cheapen the restaurant. We will totally avoid when the live music were offered next time. We will let our friend know as well.

The food was good as usual except the trout dip is not nearly as good as when it was served hot in the cast iron skillet. Please go back to the original dish!

The potential here is off the charts, and that roasted red pepper bisque was a top tier soup. Soup does a lot to move the needle forward for me obviously, but I couldn't in my heart go above three stars for the kind of night we had. The food here is the true star of the show; our two pasta entrees were compelling deviations from the usual valley menu staples, plated beautifully and absolutely delicious. Portions for everything from appetizers to dessert are well above average. Overall there's a lot of value for your money here, (for food anyway). Service is where things get rocky, and it started from the first cold greeting from the hostess. The vibe was just so incredibly off from everyone we came in contact with. Our waitress was attentive at least, but not personable and woefully uneducated about the menu. Free Range has a well deserved reputation for a diverse and unique wine list, but our server could not pronounce nor remember the order of our three glass wine flight. A shame considering all three were heavenly. Preferring to get a bottle but left hung out to dry not knowing the names of anything we tasted, we decided on cocktails instead. Woah boy! This valley has a high bar for craft cocktails, so it's baffling that Free Range hasn't even mastered the basics yet. The whole menu needs to be stripped down and redone by a real mixologist. Like the wine, the server of course could not tell us what brand of liquors were used in any of the drinks. For a restaurant at this price point that is just bewildering. There were confused and dissatisfied looks from many diners in our section. Plates were slammed down unceremoniously without a smile at our table, and we noticed more than one server carrying wine to tables by literally palming the bowls of the glasses. We watched this whole scene while thoroughly enjoying our dinner, sometimes in amusement and sometimes in shock. Huge shout out to our one food expo, she was literally the only authentic employee interaction we had all night. Other than her not a genuine smile was in sight, or even a "thanks for dining with us" as the check was dropped off. Everyone was just so indifferent to our patronage. Truly baffling. My sincere hope is that this was just an isolated incident of epic proportions. Maybe the owners were out of town and the staff was letting their hair down for the night so to speak. The aesthetic here is refreshing, welcoming and comfortable. The view from the picture windows untouchable. The food delicious. Still, one of the weirdest date nights we've had in a long long time.

We at here tonight, the view is beautiful, the atmosphere was nice, and our waitress did a good job. The best thing we ate were the Brussels sprouts. They were very good! Had lots of good options on the wine list. As for the other food, we were let down. 3 ppl got the steak, cooked good but SO tough. So much chewing. Told the waitress. She apologized. A little later the manager asked how everything was and we told her. She apologized. We also got the lamb shank, the sauce was GROSS, the sides had zero flavor. Took about 3 bites and asked the waitress to take it away. They didn’t comp anything. Didn’t try to send a free dessert over. Nothing. We will not be back. If you don’t eat meals and complain about the bad food to 2 ppl and you don’t care enough to try to make it better… that’s not ok. On the way out I told the manager we would leave a bad review, she apologized again and was willing to talk about how to take care of us but things should have been felt with before we’re complaining a third time. Very disappointing.

In May of this year, we went to celebrate my mother's birthday. Based on the good experience we received and the incredible attention from the owner(lady), we decided to return for my birthday. Unfortunately, this time the experience was not pleasant at all. We sat inside and we could not enjoy our food as much as there were too many flies, we asked the hostess to help us move to another table but the situation did not improve. The worst part of the experience is that a hair was found in one of our dishes(trout dish). The hair was in the piece of trout and my husbandit out of the trout and put it on the edge of the plate. This was communicated to the waitress, she only took the plate and returned it two minutes later. In the kitchen they only wiped the hair off the plate. It was totally disappointing the little hygiene that the chef manages in the kitchen and the little respect that is shown to the clients. There was never a floor manager who came to the table to apologize. The bill arrived and the plate obviously was not removed from the bill as a courtesy. The waitress just said "the owner says that if you are going to order dessert it will be on us due to the hair".I know obviously they can do better and we all have bad days. At that time it was more disappointing to know that one of the owners was on site and never came by. what it tells me is that the proper personnel were not working that day.We left and obviously won't be back. I worked many years in hospitality and a sincere apology goes along way.

One of the most underwhelming and disappointing meals I’ve had in a while. The trout dip didn’t even taste like trout . Our food took a long time to arrive and when it did my crab cake and asparagus were cold and my boyfriend’s chicken was rare and bloody inside. Wouldn’t come here again and don’t recommend.

We’ve eaten at Free Range several times over the years, and recently ate at the new location with extended family. Unfortunately it was rather disappointing. The new building and the overall atmosphere are great, but the food was inconsistent. Three in our party had the grilled flank steak and found it to be very tough. My wife had the pork chop, which was overcooked (and tough). (None of these are difficult to prepare.) To their credit, the Verlasso salmon was very good. We’re used to paying more for good wine these days, but we generally get a decent pour. Free Range seems to pour about four ounces in a small glass, which is dishonest. One last comment is that the wait staff tried several times to deliver food to our table, before we’d even ordered our food! Maybe they could use a table numbering system? Overall this is not the Free Range Kitchen that we used to know. We won’t be returning anytime soon.

As a local, I’ve always loved Free Range. But recently prices have increased noticeably — for example, the burger went up almost 30% and most drinks/desserts 15% since summer — and service is not quite as warm as it used to be. For this price, I’d rather drive up to White House Tavern in Aspen.

My partner and I discovered Free Range Kitchen while researching fine dining options near Glenwood Springs. We made the 30-minute drive and were initially greeted politely by the host. The environment was intimate and beautiful. However, shortly after being seated, the experience declined. For context, we are a younger couple, and throughout the evening we felt judged and unwelcome. Our server did not introduce herself and interacted with us very minimally. We were asked if we wanted drinks, but were never offered refills, neither for beverages nor for our water pitcher. She checked on our table only once during the entire meal and eventually dropped off the check without saying a word. Overall, the service felt inattentive and unfriendly. We ordered the trout dip, the horseradish flavor was overwhelmingly strong but really tasty. My partner ordered the lamb, which the restaurant was out of; it was replaced with venison at the same price. I also ordered the house-made pappardelle, which was decent but arrived with an overly watery sauce. After finishing our meal, we waited approximately 20 minutes before receiving our check, and when dessert was mentioned, it was asked in a noticeably curt and rude manner. Overall, this was a disappointing experience after we were so excited for dinner.

food was exceptional, but the restaurant was very loud because of one table and the wait staff refused to ask the table to quiet down, this ruined the meal for me and my party

We came here last night to celebrate my son’s 21st birthday, just the two of us, and left feeling disappointed. The good: The atmosphere is lovely with great lighting and well-spaced tables. We started the evening with an excellent server, Kelly, who made a fantastic tequila recommendation. Unfortunately, she was pulled into the kitchen partway through the meal due to a staffing issue. The meatballs were a great starter, and the potatoes served with both of our entrées were excellent. The neutral: We both ordered the filet, which was fine but not particularly memorable. The disappointing: Our replacement server was unfriendly and abrupt, which noticeably changed the tone of the evening. The biggest issue: Dessert service. Our desserts were delivered to the wrong table. I watched our server leave the pizza cookie (with a lit birthday candle…those guests were understandably confused) but then retrieve the crème brûlée a d deliver it to me after it had already been sitting at the other table for several minutes. I declined it and asked for a fresh dessert, which was met with clear attitude, despite being a reasonable request. Checkout was equally impersonal — the check was dropped off with a quick “thanks for coming in” as the server walked away. As Aspen locals who don’t dine out often, spending nearly $300 on what was meant to be a special celebration felt disappointing.

Really good food. Unfortunately terrible service. My wife arrived at 5:30 when they opened to get table for us. The owner asked if we had a reservation, which we did not. My wife asked if we needed one, and was told no not this early, but would have needed one if it was later. She was seated and ordered drinks and an app while waiting on me to get there from work. I arrived 20 min later, and immediately ordered a drink as well. My wife received a phone call we had been waiting for, concerning our special needs son, so she had to take it. She was on the call for 8 minutes. During the call, the owner came to our table and basically told us we needed to hurry up as she had a reservation for our table at 7:15. Or we would have to move to a smaller table; during our meal! Obviously my wife became upset, for being treated like our business wasn’t as important as the next seating. Why not seat us at the smaller table to begin with, if time was a concern? Or at least tell us that up front? People don’t come to this type of restaurant to be rushed, or told to hurry up. We will never go back. They knew we were upset, yet made no effort to rectify the situation. Then, as we were leaving people at the bar yelled bye Beth (my wife’s name!) out loud to her! So they obviously shared personal information with other customers! The most unprofessional restaurant I’ve ever seen. I’m in the travel industry and am always asked for restaurant recommendations. Needless to say, this will not be one of them!
