We stopped in at Red Ocotillo while in Borrego Springs and were genuinely impressed. The space has a clean, upscale ambiance that immediately sets the tone. It feels thoughtfully designed without being stuffy. Service was excellent — our waitress was warm, attentive, and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. The menu is enticing and creative, and the food absolutely delivered. Everything we ordered was flavorful, well-presented, and clearly prepared with care. It’s the kind of place where you can tell the kitchen takes pride in what they’re serving. My only criticism — and this is purely personal — is the seating. As an older guy with a not-so-great back, I found the chairs to be quite uncomfortable. That said, I fully recognize that’s my issue, not the restaurant’s. Overall, this is a spot I would recommend without hesitation. And yes — despite my back’s opinion on the chairs — I would absolutely return.
We had a delicious lunch at the Red Ocotillo. We sat on the covered patio, which has views of the mountains and palm trees. All three of us were *very* pleased with our orders: Quinoa Salad, Cobb Salad, Shrimp & Avocado Salad, and the soup of the day. Our server was friendly, and the food arrived promptly. We’d be delighted to return!
Had lunch there, today. French dip was a bit "fatty" but tasty. Tater tots were awesome!
Wonderful experience! Very nice patio, very good food and pleasant staff. The server wasn't able to answer my question about the IPA beer so she brought a sample... Now that's service!
While visiting Borrego Springs we stumbled upon a great breakfast place. They have both indoor & outdoor dining. Both very stylish and comfortable. Waitstaff very nice & attentive. We had a great cup of coffee and to our surprise two pieces of homemade coffee cake arrived at our table. It was heavenly. Our breakfast arrived a few minutes later my Quiche Lorraine was good but I felt like it was over microwaved as the crust was chewy, not flaky. The fruit accompaniment was plentiful and delicious. My husband’s egg burrito and potatoes were outstanding. He said one of the best he’s had. I would not hesitate to return to this lovely establishment.
Good service, great food and a lovely garden patio to enjoy while dining. We had the Beyond Burger, served in an excellent bun with good fries, and their awesome cold peanut sesame noodle salad, which was filling and very tasty. Highly recommended. For EV drivers, it's just a short walk from the EvGateway chargers, so is convenient for lunch while charging.
I enjoyed a delicious omelet with fruit. All fresh and scrumptious. The coffee was also really tasty. The service people were three beautiful women in black. Smiles and welcoming hospitality added to their charm.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the service was friendly despite the long wait for lunch. We should have expected it to be busy, given the day after Thanksgiving and tons of snow birds and tourists, but we enjoyed the ambience and people watching. The chowder was yummy as was the tuna melt and my partner had a very tasty burger that was two fisted!
Great service, beautiful atmosphere incl surrounding well manicured gardens. Terrific service both friendly and attentive. An impressive bloody mary with all the accutrements. Tasty pancakes with pecans. Biscuits and gravy avail in a half order. Happy with our order. Would eat here again!!
We first came to this restaurant and were blown away — not just by the amazing food (seriously, the clam chowder on Fridays is a must), but by our incredible server, Sherry. The moment we walked in, she had us seated with menus, drinks, great food recommendations, and a fun, upbeat attitude that made the whole experience special. We enjoyed it so much, we came back the very next day! Fast forward a month — we couldn’t wait to return. Unfortunately, we found out Sherry was no longer there, and the difference in service was noticeable. The server we had barely checked on us, seemed to spend most of the time in the kitchen, and only really came out when it was time for us to pay. I was even looking forward to trying the cherry cobbler she told us about, but never got the chance to order it. That said — the food is still fantastic, especially the clam chowder on Fridays. I just hope the level of service returns to what it once was, because with the right staff, this place is truly top-tier.
This is a lovely restaurant near the big roundabout in Borrego Springs. Food was well prepared, menu is eclectic but not overly complex. Very nice outside seating areas with lovely garden atmosphere. Our server Gloria was super. She was very welcoming, professional and attentive. Chef Ignacio makes a great burger - best burger I have had I a very long time. Fries were done to perfection with a crispy surface and not oily. The Asian Quinoa salad was generous and was easy to modify for Gluten Free diet. There is an inside bar.
Came for lunch after a hike. Sat out on the huge covered patio and enjoyed the views of the flowers and mountains. Food took a bit to be served, but not horrible. Had fish tacos (a little bland and the fish is breaded) and a Reuben sandwich (awesome with huge chunks of corned beef). Prices were not outrageous. Staff very nice.
One of the finest hamburgers I've had. Perfectly cooked and seared high-quality beef with cheese, bacon, avocado, tomato, and red onion on a fresh brioche bun with a pickle. Served with mayo, mustard, and ketchup on the side so you can customize it. Many side options, and the coleslaw I chose had all the classic elements in perfect balance. Very nice outdoor seating too.
Quaint little oasis with fresh and high quality food for all times of the day. Being our first time in Borrego Springs, we were suprised by the food options in this little town. Summer is the off season, but there is still a good handful of choices to eat. We chose the Red Ocotillo after finding out what the ocotillo actually is. It's the plant that grows in abundance in this area and it's pretty cool looking. We stopped in for breakfast. This place is charming and quiet. There seemed to be one waitress working at the time and she was hustling all over that place. She was fantastic. There seems to be a separate menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner here. For breakfast we ordered for the four of us pancakes, a breakfast plate with eggs, sausage and toast, biscuits and gravy (I'm still trying to find one that lives up to my standards after growing up in Oklahoma) a breakfast burrito and huevos rancheros. The food is fresh, made homemade and comes out piping hot. This place is truly a gem. I don't care the price, because for this quality of food and to have the pretty views of the desert; priceless. My biscuits and gravy were flavorful and pretty close to what I had growing up, the pancakes were fluffy and delicious, burrito was well balanced and savory and my huevos rancheros were light but flavorful with killer salsa. Honestly, everything was really good and we probably will end up back there for dinner. The homemade potatoes were also probably the best I've ever had. I don't think you'll find ultra trendy foods or techniques used here, but the food is anything but stale and flavorless. It's almost like the comfort of eating at a diner, but minus the greasy and low quality food. I really enjoyed our breakfast and I'm sure we'll be back. Also, after having our battery die in the parking lot, the staff helped us jump our car and get back on the road. Thanks to the Red Ocotillo for the great food and hospitality we were shown and for our first visit to Borrego Springs, the staff and food will definitely make us want to return. Until next time.
We've been many times over the years. The food & service is always good. We split the Quesadilla with grilled chicken. It was very good. Gloria was very helpful. I highly recommend. The only down side is it takes a while to get your food, so be prepared. However, it's worth the wait.
Good was good! I had an Asian quinoa salad it was pretty good! It was pretty busy when I was there so service was a bit delayed but understandable as it was a holiday weekend. Very nice server.
We had multiple take meals from there, mostly breakfast and picnic lunches. Food was really, really good. On our last night I wanted a small meal and ordered the cold sesame noodles...excellent! And this comes from a New Yorker used to Chinatown and Flushing quality Chinese food (and oh I travel to Asia too).
Let me say that the food made everything else acceptable. Very young front of house staff that was very reluctant to tell people walking in that the wait was over 50 for food . I believe if they had more servers then this would have been a 5 star review. Walked in and. Told to seat ourselves, No menus offered or even pointed to. Staff was not rude at all, just overwhelmed. Overall a beautiful place with delicious food . I had the breakfast crab cake with Benedict sauce and the rosemary potatoes and it tasted like a home cooked delicious meal. I can tell the cook put heart into it. My husband had Peg Leg breakfast -French toast and bacon (cooked perfectly crispy) and the portion was smallest out of all of our order, but very very yummy.
Our group of 11 motorcyclists arrived at Red Ocotillo after a three-hour ride, looking forward to a relaxing meal—and we were not disappointed! The restaurant provided a peaceful ambiance, which was exactly what we needed after our journey. The food was delicious, with a variety of flavorful dishes that satisfied everyone in our group. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home, adding to the overall positive experience. The combination of great service, tasty food, and a serene environment makes Red Ocotillo a spot we’d highly recommend to anyone passing through Borrego Springs. A wonderful place to take a break and enjoy good company!
Diverse menu of fresh dishes, well portioned for the price. But, as others have said, don't come hungry; you're at least an hour from food after you order. I feel like they might honestly not have enough plates. They were eager to take them off the table.
Food was good , Service was laking. Had the Fried chicken was good and the sides of veggies were really great. My wife ga the Asian salad with a salmon add. The salad was great but the salmon was way over cooked. Service was spotty at best. After there's were getting rolls as they sat we had to ask for them. Very little attention from the server, having to ask others for to go boxes and our check s she chatted with other customers. Just didn't feel we were worthy of her attention. Never asked if my wife wanted more wine or if we wanted dessert. Really missed the mark.
Typically I'm always looking for the positive things in life, But theres a couple things that I have issues with, I don't care to wait, Let it be the DMV, a signal lights and waiting 45 minutes for my lunch to be served. I avoid the DMV, I tolerate red lights, and now will ask for a different waiter when returning to this establishment. My main course was delicious and the fries were warm. Never asked to have my drink refreshed . Lesson learned....
I have been going to the Red Ocotillo for many years. The last two visits will be my last. I believe the cooks are doing a good job but the servers are no longer professional in the slightest. We waited about 50 minutes for our food which the server blamed on the cooks and them being busy. There were seven tables with an average of four people each. The portions were average, no longer generous as in the past. The prices have gone up considerably. The server changed her tip on the bill after we paid the bill and I went back to discuss with the manager. I would no longer recommend this restaurant unfortunately.
This is a cute little restaurant with a patio but don't waste your time here, literally. There is no reason for such long wait times considering the staff seems to just disappear for long periods of time then come out without drinks, checks or food. Having worked in the food service industry it almost seems like the owners are trolling people to see how bad the service can be before people stop coming here. The most inattentive, incompetent, slowest staff I have ever seen. If you get the correct order and it is the right temperature the food is appropriate, meaning what it should be, not great not bad. If you have a lot of time to kill and are very very patient, give it a try but be prepared for mind boggling waits for every single thing. You could walk to the store, buy and cook your own food then come back here and your order still wouldn't be on the table. Prices are slightly high if service was normal. Several tables were visibly frustrated with the service and inaccurate orders.
