I ate here on the night of February 15th. I stayed at the Kixby hotel and when walking to the subway station I always inquired of the long lines. Finally one night I decided to eat here and am I happy I made that decision. First of all, I am happy to have gotten seated immediately as it was lines and a long wait time for parties of two and more. I eat Japanese food often, maybe once-twice a week and it is limited to what I am familiar with. So I was completely going in bling but in a good way! Thank you to my waiter, an older woman whose English was not that fluent but I enjoyed her as she answered my curiosities and questions pertaining to menu items. I got the beef and tofu hot pot and shrimp patties. Everything was to die for! I am not a tofu girly, but she urged me that it was delish and omg was it! Let’s just say, had I been in the comfort of my own home, the bowl would have been licked clean! Not to mention the pear sake that I had that was so devine. This place was such a treat for someone that likes to experiment and call expanding their palate fun. I will be returning!
I don't get why this place doesn't have higher reviews! Service is fast and warm and they have the best jjajang I've had in NYC. I go for the jjajangmyeon/tangsuyuk combo. Their tangsuyuk is made with chapsal and beef and the prices are reasonable.
This place is actually so delicious. I bring every Korean person I know here. The jjajjangmyeon is very homey, with springy noodles and not too greasy or sweet. It’s not *not* greasy though, as that wouldn’t be right for jjajjangmyeon. I love the jjangppong there sooo much too! It’s the perfect compliment and a good amount of spicy. The broth is rich and very seafoody! Of course, my favorite thing about this place is the tangsooyook. Yummm. It is crispy and juicy every time. Of course, I always ask for the sauce on the side. I recommend this for everyone trying it at first, as it keeps the fried coating from getting soggy. If I was to choose between this place and the many Korean-Chinese places I’ve tried in Korea, I would consistently choose this one! You can always find a table no matter the time of day. It’s clean, quiet, open late, easy to get to after exploring midtown, and definitely one of my favorite places in the city.
We came here for the jjajangmyeon based on a recommendation and left happily full of delicious food. Fried dumplings and sides were delicious. Pho was savory and satisfying. Our server was so attentive and friendly, but we also felt treated to an intimate and quiet dinner without being hovered over. The neighboring restaurant had a line down the road of people waiting while we enjoyed a very calm and beautiful space-- if you're in the fence about going here vs. the popular next door restaurant--don't be. We'll absolutely be back to Hyo Dong Gak the next time we're in NYC for a show.
I’m not sure how this place doesn’t have a phenomenal star rating- everything about our experience this evening was superb. We were greeted and taken to our seats immediately. The atmosphere was lovely. Great music. Lovely aesthetic. Smiling faces running the place. They helped us pick out entrees that we both thoroughly enjoyed. (If undecided- I suggest the spicy brisket soup). We will definitely return on our next trip
A friend introduced me to this place years ago and it's been my favorite Chinese-Korean restaurant to go to. So underrated and easy to miss spot. I mainly come here for their jjajangmyeon (N2. noodles with brown sauce). It's my favorite here and as of right now, better than any spot in the town area specifically this dish. Noodles are perfectly chewy and combined with the fresh aroma of the sauce, filled with sweet onions and baby chunks of meat- it's hard to find any fault with it! Maybe except that if you didn't know what it was, it's not exactly visually appealing. But taste wise... mmmmm!! I've passed the word along to other friends and coworkers and they always ask to come back here with me. "When's our next Noods date?" Haha Besides the jjajangmyeon, I also recommend their Spicy Seafood soup! It's not terribly spicy- just a tiny kick to your taste buds. The soup tastes especially good on a cold winter day. When I'm not sure what I'm in the mood for, I usually go for their N1, which is a combination of the jjajangmyeon and their Spicy seafood soup. A bowl split down the middle so you have half portion of each. Best of both worlds! Also have had their fried pork dumplings. They're very oily but if you can overlook that, they're crispy yet juicy on the inside and filled with lots of meaty goodness. Also comes with a sweet dipping sauce. I don't get this every time but when I do- definitely no regrets. Their kimchi is a hit or miss. Somehow not always consistent. But their yellow pickled radish tastes good especially with the jjajangmyeon. Every time I come here, the staff are always nice and welcomes you at the door. I've always been seated right away and service has always been excellent.
Originally, we planned to go to the restaurant next door, but the wait was way too long, so we ended up coming here instead. The staff greeted customers warmly with big smiles, which was really nice. We ordered the jajangmyeon+sweet and sour pork combo, the jajangmyeon+pork cutlet combo, and the chicken with garlic & pepper sauce. Tbh, the kimchi that came as a side dish wasn’t good at all, so we didn’t have high expectations for the main dishes. However, the jajangmyeon was surprisingly good. The sweet and sour pork was a bit disappointing because the sauce was poured over it, so it wasn’t crispy. The pork cutlet was decent, and the boneless chicken was tasty as well, though the portion was smaller than expected.
Had Jjamjjamyun (half jjajangmyun and half jjamppong). It tasted like the nice jjajangmyuns and jjamppng I had in Korea. The noodles were chewy, and both the jjajangmyun and jjamppong had the nice oiliness and richness in flavour. The fried dumplings had nice crispy surface. I would however not recommend the tang su yuk, that was made with beef instead of pork. The meat had slight unpleasant tone that can come from defrosted meat. The place looked like a cute pub.
TLDR: If you are craving for Korean-Chinese in the city, it'll get the job done. Go for lunch time and take advantage of the combo that gives a small sweet and sour beef with the spicy seafood or jajangmyun noodles. I had walked by this place so many times so I figured let's give it a try. Price was decent, the interior is a bit dated but let's focus on the food. Fried dumplings. Standard, crispy (almost too crispy maybe) lots of filling but what you'd expect. Crunchy, greasy, fatty meat, lots of garlic chives. I opted for the jjampong and small sweet and sour beef combo. The beef is already dressed which I don't love the sweet sauce in general but it was still decently crispy. Spicy seafood noodles were decent, good wok flavor. For $21.95, this kind of combo in this area; it's not bad.
It was just ok. Service a bit here and there, we ordered something from the photo which is not as per what’s written on the menu. They had to re-prepare our order again. Lucky we had steamed dumpling to start with.
Got bad food poisoning from here, but the food was good till it wasn’t. Seems like a classic Korean food spot. There weren’t any customers when we came in.
Updating my below review —————————————— Service here is horrible. I went there by myself for lunch. I was the first one came there. But the host was keep hosting other group came after me telling me that she has to host bigger group of people first even though they came after me. There were even empty table for 4 people and she not let me sit there because that table should be saved for bigger group than single customer… i have been waiting for freaking 30 minutes for nothing. There are only a few 2 seater table which already occupied and there are a lot of available empty 4 seater table. But still I could not be seated because I am a single customer and wait for nothing for more than 30 minutes. I ended up going to other chinese-Korean reataurant in K-town near by. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANT NICE SERVICE AND NOT TREATED AS MONEY. If you want peaceful food stay away from this place ——below is my review before——- Foods here are below okay for the basic item, black bean noodle, it was way much better before. It was tasty before not anymore. The service is very bad. Interior is what you can expect it to be as typical korean restaurant. But the bathroom is not pleasant at all
I’ve eaten here several times and every singe time I got a bad stomachache. Which can only mean bad or spoiled ingredients, or bad sanitation in the kitchen. These people just don’t know how to run and manage a restaurant safely.
