We had the Skate Wing, Oshizushi, House Silken Tofu, Clams Sakamushi, and Wagyu Sukiyaki. Every dish was earthy, nourishing, and beautifully balanced, made with very fresh ingredients and delicate flavors. The presentation of each dish really added to the overall experience. We also had sencha green tea served in a teapot, and the taste — wow. It was so good that I even asked the waiter what kind of tea it was. Now I actually have the same one at home. The staff was excellent — attentive, welcoming, and very knowledgeable. At one point we accidentally spilled some tea or sauce on the table, and they immediately cleaned it up with a smile, which we really appreciated. Throughout the evening we felt very well informed, welcomed, and genuinely taken care of. The music created a great atmosphere, and the whole experience felt close to perfection. We’ll definitely be coming back to try more dishes — especially the duck, which looked incredible.

Beautiful space with beautiful food that honestly just tasted fine. Like everything was good but nothing really blew me away, until the dessert that was stellar. Generally shared everything to get a taste of a bunch of things. To start with, the Karaage was really crisp and had a nice sauce. The Oshizushi tasted fresh. House Silken Tofu was very interesting, super duper soft almost like a pudding. Also got the Almond Miso Soup which was divine. Unfortunately did not taste as much almond butter as Id hoped but the broth was incredibly flavorful and super creamy. Tried a few of the Binchotan and sides too. Chicken Meatball had a nice marinade. Macaroni Salad was a large portion. Yaki Onigiri was one of my favorite items despite literally just being rice, but the char and the chicken fat wash made it so delish. Then came dessert which was def the best dishes. The Rice Cooker Cheesecake was so light and airy and the pumpkin, caramel, and persimmons were such a good touch. Then the Yuzu Soft Serve was one of the best soft serves Ive ever had. Sweet and super tart too, perfect level of creamy too I just couldnt stop eating it. Also the soft serve with the cheesecake in the same bite was a legendary combo.

Everything was GREAT. My boyfriend and I had the karaage, gyu don, and the souffle pancake with a yuzu mini soft serve. The Karaage was crispy and fresh, I think this may be the best Karaage I’ve had in a long time. The sauces had deep flavors that truly added to the experience The gyudon was also great! I usually don’t get to enjoy gyudons because I find the meat too fatty and at times it feels like there’s more onion than beef. I did not find either of these issues with our gyudon. The pancake was better than I expected. As a texture person I thought it would be too mushy for my taste, instead it was fluffier than I ever imagined. The honey butter added enough sweetness so I only used the maple syrup occasionally. The yuzu soft serve was a 10/10 in my opinion but my boyfriend found it too citrusy. The atmosphere was wonderful, the staff was amazing and even though the place was busy our water cups were never empty. Shout out to Zack for making our experience so awesome.

I was in NYC spontaneously and I've heard about this place, decided to just stroll in solo and try it out for lunch. I had previously seen pictures of the Chicken Katsu Sando on IG and google, and I had a craving for it. I was sat a at the bar, and Brittany (I think?) was super nice and friendly. I ended up chatting up with another solo stranger next to me, and Brittany complimented that it was great to see two strangers connect like that. Truth is, it's probably the vibe that was created at the bar. I've worked in restaurants/bars for a while before, and the timing and the non-verbal skill of waiters/bartenders is hard to teach. Mago was also super down to earth, sharing some knowledge about his passion for wine and jewelry. Finally, Sophia (a waitress) came and offered a yuzu ice cream dessert and a cup of Brooklyn Kura sake, on the house. She mentioned it was simply coz I was giving off good vibes and I also shared the same name as a Michelin star chef (that I'm really not associated with), so she just thought it'd be a dope thing to do. Needless to say, vibes and service were over the top, making it easily one of my best experiences of the weekend. I actually even went back the next evening for a quick drink and appetizer with my wife, and was served by another super chill down to earth bartender (I think it's Steven?). Other than the service, the clientele that was there is also a great mix of everything, from gen z to millenials to young boomers, no pretentious feels from the crowd, everyone minding their own business but positively non-verbally interacting with each other too. Somehow, this place attracts the right chemistry of people, even if the patrons don't realize it. I only had the chicken katsu sando and the wagyu tartare for food, as well as a sample of that yuzu ice cream. Chicken katsu sando: TENDER chicken, crispy and flaky panko-fried, fluffy bread Japanese style, daikon; brought me right back to Japan Wagyu tartare: 5/5, good acidity without compromising sweetness and flavor. Oh and the bread, shiiiiii you know what i'm saying? Yuzu ice cream sorbet: never had that before, loved it and would totally come back for more! Greatest little sweet sour touch to wrap it up. Anyway y'all got me going on a roll here, but it's been a great experience, would definitely recommend and would definitely come back. Cheers!

Nick is the reason this dinner turned into one of the highlights of our Brooklyn trip. The restaurant was already an easy five stars, but Nick took it somewhere else entirely. This guy knew the menu, the food, the history, the details, the why behind everything. Not in a rehearsed way. In a real way. We honestly thought he might be the owner based on how deep his knowledge ran and how much pride he had in the place. On top of that, he was fun, sharp, joking with us, reading the table perfectly. Zero stiffness. Just great energy and total confidence. Every recommendation was dead on. Every explanation made the food better before it even hit the table. He made the experience feel personal, not transactional. Restaurant is five stars without question. Nick is a ten. Nick, if they ever let you go, we’ll follow you wherever you land. Best in NYC.

rule of thirds blows me away every time. first, the interior and the atmosphere is very cool. i love the style of everything in the restaurant and the large open space. second, the food is mind blowing. the unique combinations never fail to impress me. my favorite dish from my most recent visit was the chicken onigiri - i ended up ordering a couple more for the table. i always love the seaweed martini as well. i brought my parents here and they were highly impressed. great spot!

So delicious. Still thinking about the smashed potatoes… I had the Japanese breakfast set and it was perfect with two appetizers to share: not overstuffed or still hungry after. Perfectly content!!! Can’t wait to come back and try more of their dishes. Cozy atmosphere and kind servers made the experience extra memorable!

The menu is so thoughtful including the drinks. We loved trying skate wing for the first time. the Crab Mazemen was our fav dish of the night. The Zabuton Steak was incredible as well! The mushroom special left a little to be desired but it was still solid. The restaurant is beautiful, the staff is so lovely (shoutout to Julio) and we will be coming back to try brunch very soon!

It’s evident they take a lot of pride in providing a wonderful experience for everyone that dines there, shoutout to Chris for being awesome! Ambiance is perfect for a date night. Everything we got last night was delicious! Highly recommend the duck hearts, tuna nori, smashed cucumbers, seared mackerel, steak, grilled mochi cake and white sesame ice cream!

Finally got a chance to visit Rule of Thirds tonight. All the staff were so friendly, and my server Julio was incredible! Everything was delicious and really reminded me of the amazing food I had in Japan. My favorites were the chutoro sashimi, wagyu sukiyaki, and the white sesame soft serve. We spent about $110, and it was absolutely worth it. Can't wait to go back soon!

One of my favourite restaurants in the area! Rule of thirds consistently has a great menu, friendly service, in a beautiful setting! Last time I was here, got the corn salad and mazemen (faves), karaage and tuna tartare, as well as the hamachi collar and pork katsu. Highly recommend everything! And if you’re feeling like drinking, the house special sake and cocktails are great.

Rule of Thirds is a superb modern Japanese restaurant. The skewers are flavorful, the fluffy umami pancakes are incredible, and everything feels thoughtfully prepared. Beautiful decor and a relaxed, welcoming vibe — brunch and the breakfast set menu are especially worth trying.

Vibes were immaculate. Food was extremely yummy. Cocktails were top notch. And the servers were soooo helpful and friendly. The server really helped guide me through the menu and pick the perfect dishes that matched what I was in the mood for. So many unique and fun cocktail options. Would absolutely come back here. Walked in Wednesday at 7pm and there was no wait for a table for 2.

We got married at Rule of Thirds a couple of years ago, so it’s become our anniversary tradition to return. This year was extra special as it was our first restaurant outing as a family of 3 with our 10-week-old. We booked a 5pm reservation to keep things easy and as always, the team here was warm, welcoming, and so accommodating. We never once felt out of place with a baby in tow. The food was fantastic as always, but it’s really the staff that make this place so memorable for us.

First time visiting this unique place with my bestie, and it truly felt like stepping into Japan. The interior design is stunning. rustic touches mixed with modern details, and the ambiance is cozy yet vibrant. The food was on another level. I tried the fried chicken katsu and the soufflé pancake.. both were absolutely delicious, with perfect textures and flavors that stood out. The service was exceptional, super attentive without being intrusive. From start to finish, it was a delightful experience. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a unique Japanese dining vibe in the city!

Came here on a Sunday at 12:30 with a reservation for a party of two. We were able to get a great pair of seats that looked into the kitchen which was a lot of fun. Our orders were promptly taken by the wait staff and they were helpful with any questions we had about the menu. The karaage was crispy and was drizzled with an awesome tartar sauce. Great appetizer! I got the chicken katsu sando which was large, crispy, and was complemented by the soft Japanese milk bread. The mustard, mayo, and radish was a fantastic addition to this sandwich. We were too full to order the enormous soufflé pancake, so we went with the sesame soft serve which was a great dessert to top off a very enjoyable meal with. Definitely recommend trying this place if you’re in the area!

Rule of thirds has fantastic service, picturesque food, and tasty cocktails. Its just too expensive, I think. If you really value atmosphere, then you'll love it. I just couldnt stomach paying 30+ for a thimble of chirashi. The katsu sandwich was fine, and so was the kakuni. Nothing to write home about. Go here if you value ambiance, story and marketing.

We had a wonderful dining experience at Rule of Thirds, with a lukewarm indifferent ending. Since we were celebrating our 6 year dating anniversary, they had a custom greeting card on our table, which was a nice personal touch. The server also offered each of us a complimentary glass of wine (non-alcoholic per our preference). Overall the food was delicious, arrived to our table in a timely and friendly manner, and our waiter was lovely and pleasant. However, we left the establishment with a not-so welcoming vibe. When placing our orders with our waiter, we also placed a takeout order, which he mentioned would be “coming out shortly”. After we paid for our meal and tipped well, we were left with a clean empty table, waiting for a seemingly nonexistent sandwich. We made anxious/frustrated eye contact with service people passing by catering to other tables for what seemed like an eternity before we became fed up waiting and stood up to leave. We mentioned to one of the servers by the front door that we had been waiting for our take out order for a long time and as we were about to step out, our to-go bag magically arrived just seconds later. Our entire wonderful dining experience was tainted by those lasting moments of frustration and lack of care/service while waiting. We understand that dining orders are typically cooked with precedence, over take out orders. But we placed our order at the very start of our meal to prevent such timing issues. Overall, this should be addressed to prevent ruining the lasting memory of a dining patron. Some positives I would like to highlight are the delicious hottokeki (Japanese soufflé pancake), my husband really enjoyed their special: tuna belly, and their matcha latte was also superb. We appreciated the greetings wishing us a happy anniversary, and overall the service and waitstaff while dining was prompt and friendly. I simply wish their service didn’t turn cold/blind eye after we paid and finished our meal.

Amazing service and atmosphere. Favorite dish was the chirashi (smoked roe was amazing) The branzino was ok- flavor was unique but thought it wasn't evenly distributed in the dish. The mazamen had great texture and using three types of noodles was innovative, but the sauce lacked the seafood "umph" Tuna and nori were edible but not flavorful. The food here is decent but not amazing. The presentation was really nice as well. Overall thought it was a bit overhyped and overpriced.

Was really excited to try this place, have been wanting to go here for a year. My boyfriend and I got reservations for Valentines Day. We had recently come back from a trip to Japan, I am Japanese for context. The food was underwhelming. Tasted like vague Japanese flavor with French or American influence. Not what I thought the restaurant would be. Did not feel catered or for Asian people, even though it is Asian cuisine. I would not recommend the black bass, macaroni salad, skewers, or almond miso. My favorite was the Wagyu beef tartare with the house bread. Very fun and fresh flavors. The service was really lovely and the ambiance was great! Since we were celebrating Vday/our anniversary, they brought us some non alcoholic wine to taste. Fun! We will be returning to try the brunch to see if it can redeem this dinner. Will also have lower expectations because it’s clearly not Japanese food, but Japanese inspired for the Brooklyn American palate.

I had high hopes coming in, as the restaurant always has served memorable meals for me. Unfortunately, my experience today was concerning. The pork cutlet I was served was significantly undercooked in the center — still very raw and pink — which poses a serious food safety risk. When preparing a dish like tonkatsu, presentation and flavor matter, but so does ensuring it’s cooked properly. Serving pork at this level of doneness is not acceptable, regardless of how good the breading tastes. I hope the kitchen takes this feedback seriously and improves their quality control, because the atmosphere and service were otherwise fine. Until then, I would advise caution to others ordering pork here.
