In my opinion, it is the best Russian restaurant in North America based on quality/price/service. I enjoy visiting it every time.
I love this place old fashion all the workers are great. I have been here a lot never regretted. Foods are very delicious. You should try ones and you will come every time.
Always fresh and delicious- never fails. Reasonable prices. Attentive and frendly staff-you get served right away!! Menu-typical russian food, cooked very well! Dumplings (pelmeny) simply just the best!
Great meal. Small played, big plates. A variety vegetarian or meat dishes. My only thing I love here are the cheese and potato ravioli. Each plate filled with 24 pieces for only 5.95!!!!!!!! No place can beat it. Service is quick and efficient. Recommend it very much
I and my family and friends are frequent customers of the restaurant. We just LOVE the food !! The cooks name is LUBA and she is grate? Kitchen is always clean even on the busiest days (I actually looked inside). Service is very good and fast. It is a little to loud when the place is busy(it was before Corona), but other vice it is an excellent place to eat! I highly recommend. If you try ones, I bet you'll go back again and again !!!
Really good and cheap place for Russian food. Big portions. Always crowded. I know a lot of people who like this place. Food fresh, no complaints. Busy location on Coney Island avenue. Really big choice of dishes. Self made drinks. Any type of food preference could be satisfied. I recommend this place.
Love this place! We are enjoying food & service! Food is absolutely delicious!! Highly recommended for any date or anniversary!!! Salad with el -amazing !!
The Borcht makes a great start for a meal as did the Mushroom varenyky. The highlight of my lunch was the rabbit with white sauce which tasted like turkey albeit more boney. The cherry punch was nice with just the right amount of sweetness. The prices were not bad at all. The place was a little small but the tables can be placed together if one is dining with a large group. There is only one washroom so just be prepared to exercise patience.
Unbelievably good food. I bring visitors and friends here as often as I can. I’m always impressed that the servers can recommend a specific dish because everything here is wildly good.
I put 5 for the atmosphere, depending on your company. The food is very good, so service. Like this place.
This place is awesome! The style reminds old Soviet buffets, which is cool if you have nostalgia or want to see how it was in Western Europe 30 years ago. I hate communism with all my heart and it's only one downside. The food is unbelievably delicious!!! The taste is exactly like in my home country! I was there 1st time like 8 years ago and it's still as good as it was before!
Great traditional menu, good prices, quick service. Definitely a must for anybody who wants to try Soviet cuisine. Simple interior with some Soviet themed posters.
Very authentic food! We loved everything we got on our plates. The atmosphere is nice.
Everything was delicious, the service was great, and the best dish was the potatoes with mushrooms.
Always great service and it's always good to back to your roots and have your culture food that's memorable
I don't normally share reviews but this place was so delicious and so authentic. The pelmeni were exactly how my mom used to make them. The food came out super quick. The prices are unbeatable. The portions are fantastic. Can't wait to go back.
It was my favorite place to family lunch and work place celebrations, but we moved to Greenville SC and over here everything is great. Weather, people, nature, business regulations, houses priced on the lower end. Plenty of all kinds of restaurants, but nothing like Stolovaja. We have only one great authentic Georgian restaurant, but nothing else related to Russian and Ukrainian food. You should move here or just open second Stolovaja and enjoy great success.
Walked in on a busy Friday night by myself and enjoyed a fantastic meal. The decoration inside goes along with the old Soviet theme. I don’t speak any Russian but you’ll hear it throughout the restaurant. It’s bustling, so if the locals love it that’s a good sign. I had the dumpling soup and beef stroganoff. The stroganoff comes in a huge bread bowl. Though a carb heavy meal, I enjoyed it thoroughly. The staff is super attentive and the food came out promptly. The prices are modest and abundant portions. I highly recommend to try this place out!
This is the best restaurant I have been to in NYC so far. I've been to about 15 or so. This is the best. Everything was 10/10. The fish, the beer, the sides, dumplings, blintzes, cooked apple, salads, coleslaw, borsch. Everything 10/10. And the prices are very fair. Incredible place. I went here on my birthday. Best birthday feast I've had in a long time.
It is one of the best places for some Easter Europe traditional food. And the prices are not that high, I mean you can easily spend 20$ and eat enough!
Came here with a homie. She said this was the spot to contemplatecommunist isms. Walked around the outside for ten minutes looking for the entrance. Did not know that the name of the place was in straight up Ruski First time having Borscht. Tasted like the nectar straight from Lenin's loins. Had me some Ruski Boiled Empanadas. Softer than new born doodoo and so savory Putin woulda had no problem Putin more in his mouth. 🫠 Had some of their commie kebabs. Made me want to try everyone's food. Or as I would like to say. Our Food. Great place. Would come again. Warning. If you never had Borscht before, it will make you Borscht right out of your Borscht hole, and the TP roll is in the most inconvenient position in relation to the throne. But it is a Russian place so, suffer.
Flavorful food. The chicken kebab was juicy and flavorful. The fried pelmeni (dumplings) were great too, which I always get. Overall, a great place to come with family and food is always good here.
Great place, come here whenever Im in the neighborhood. The food is great. My only pet peeve is that they take long to bring out the next dish
Although slightly pricey, the food is really good. Service was pretty good and attentive. The soups were hearty and delicious. The beers on tap were pretty good. Go with few people, so you can try different dishes.
I can’t ever get enough of this hidden gem. They’re always consistent every single time and I’ve been ordering from this spot for maybe 15 years now. My go to dishes are the pan fried Branzino with mashed potato’s, lamb ribs, beef stroganoff, chicken broth and or borscht, Vareniki with meat, and everyone gets their Siberian pelmeni. You can even order frozen ones if you want to have some at the ready in your freezer.
Everything on the menu is good and authentic. The red Borscht and schnitzel with a fried egg (order the mashed potatoes...the best) are delicious. Prices are very reasonable.
Perfect ate it all small princess really nice did not have. To wait at all fast serving
Atmosphere is great, food is always fresh and taste awesome. The manager Andrey is very polite, very kind individual, always comes by every few minutes to make sure we have what we need, but does it in a very cool way, he dosnt intrude on convos which alot of Russian cusine places tend to do in a very shameless way. the staff is very friendly too. but the best part .... THE FOOD IS AMAZING! just like mama makes it at home. i definetly suggest giving this place a try for that warm home type Authentic Russian experience.
reminder:: bacon and lard is technically pork fat 20240331::trying something new, i didn't fit in this resturant. our waiter was awesome, i showed him pics and got the translations for me. i have been googling maps this place for days studying the menu. that really helped. 1)not on menu, tomatos, scallion, horseradish, hot garlic and pork fat(yummy) 2) spring salid, diced egg on top, pink mayo salid of some kind, then red beets inside, and clumpy mash on bottom.(interesting, not bad flavors) 3)beef stroganoff, peas and cabbage salid, mash potato( this was VERY GOOD) 4) vareniki mushroom and potatoes dumplings (pretty good) 5)fried pork chop #8 on menu(pretty tasty) 6) the stroganoff didn't soak through the bottom of the bread bowl, side of the bowl was deliciously crunchy...
This spot understands what customers want in a meal. Their cooking creates uncommonly good flavors. People who care about dining environment will like what they see. I return for both the fantastic food and caring employees. I found nothing to complain about.
Great place for home-style Russian food. I've been coming here (not too frequently) for over 10 years and the food is consistently good. The prices for this type of food are better than most other places that I know. The place is adorned in Soviet-style art and posters, which is quite interesting.
One of my absolute favorites! This unfussy restaurant serves up delicious comfort food, complete with charming train car decor that always makes me smile.
I came here once with some friends. Let me just say this: The experience was truly something to write home about. It was my first time in a Russian restaurant and I will most certainly come back to this one. The service and the food are great!
Tons of food options. I went with a party of 7 and ordered at least 10 different dishes. Everything was amazingly good. Including the tea and the bread.
Delicious foods very great place to sit down and enjoy authentic Russian meals
Homemade food for a reasonable price: simple, unpretentious and consistent. Service is typical to the former USSR's collective eateries: efficient, usually prompt and without fake smiles. However, it's been updated to the American customs and is lacking rudness and inhospitability. Enjoy! On weekends prepare to wait for a table. They accept reservations for parties and BYOB.
You'll appreciate the effort put into appearances. The kitchen doesn't use frozen products. Stolovaya worked nicely for our social group. The staff balanced speed, efficiency, warmth and skill. This establishment creates a great atmosphere.
My single visit proved this restaurant's worth. The decor and atmosphere work together. Their dishes come straight from the kitchen. They customer service was spectacular! The concept here is refreshingly different.
Borsche was so good with Pilmeni. Ahh god bless Ukraine for creating such a soup. Thank you guys for a pleasant evening. We will be back as soon as we are in neighborhood. Spasiba vam!
The chef makes traditional dishes taste alive and current. It's rare to find such capable workers these days. The space here has endearing quality. The servings exceed typical expectations. Our next visit to town will bring us back here.
The meals show attention to detail, the staff shows personal care, and prices show customer appreciation. The food excels completely at reasonable prices. The standouts are evident but quality is consistent. Their employees deliver flawless attention alongside remarkable dishes. My future visits to this neighborhood include this place.
Food here is exceptionally tasty! I was lucky to stop by right at noon when they opened, so I didn’t have to wait—because it does get packed quickly (and for good reason). The atmosphere is inviting and cozy, but the highlight is definitely the food. Every dish feels homely, comforting, and absolutely delicious. I can’t recommend this place enough!
They make dining out feel special through their approach. This restaurant maintains highest quality always. The workers' timely responses were appreciated. This cozy spot creates impressive meals. The visit felt like a reward to ourselves.
So many ppl were saying this please is a must! And yeah, so tasty, hospitable, fast, clean and affordable. We had chicken Kyiv, varenyky aka dumplings, shashlik and fruit juice aka kompot☺️ Everything 10/10. Staff is amazing, the kitchen Team and a chef are about and beyond💫 The atmosphere and interior will be good for seniors. They should get that nostalgia moment.
A review from a Chinese person: It's quiet great to be honest. The food is delicious, the portion is huge, the price is affordable, and the server is helpful. The only inconvenience that I had is communication since basically everyone there (customers and staffs) mainly speak Russian (or maybe other slavic languages, I am not sure), so it is kinda hard to order or getting staffs' notice. But to be fair, this kind of situation happens in every ethical restaurant, like Chinese restaurants. Therefore, I don't really blame them for this, so over all, it is a nice place to go. Would recommend to others.
I enjoyed my visit, just as much as I used to 20 years ago. This place didn't change much, everything is still made fresh, tasty and the bill will surprise you in a good way. The atmosphere is somewhat noisy but nothing excessive. Crowd, as you can expect, composed of ex-USSRs - both babushkas and young people. Dishes are huge. Kompot is a drink you should try, comes in pitchers. Waiters are fast but busy, so they don't trouble you with too many unnecessary questions.
Very good! The staff can try to be more polite. Just cause I am not Russian doesn't mean I should be looked down on. The portions are big, cute decor around the restaurant. They include a service fee in the bill so you do not need to tip.
Very good place. Has some kinks to work out in regard to serving customers who do not speak Russian, but that hasn't stopped me from becoming a regular there, as of late. Beef stroganoff in a bread bowl is super. Salads and sides are a pleasant bonus. Schnitzel is great, too. Atmosphere rocks, like a well- kept secret. 2 thumbs up!
Nice place to get back into USSR,with amazing food, but small portions of meat, should order 2 , because price was telling me about, really cheap and good . Only no one asked if to go or stay,so I got plastic bag to go ,but I wanted to eat in. Attention to detail is very important in hospitality business. Wait time 20 minutes also little high. Otherwise just good. Thank you
Great service and atmosphere, but the food is bland. The blintzes were good.
Good Russian food and fast service at fair prices! Since it was our first time there, one of the women could've been nicer; she expected us to know everything and wasn't very helpful. They seem to be nicer if you speak Russian. All the staff zoom past you when the restaurant gets busy (it got very busy on a Sunday at 3pm!) I was impressed at how well they clean each table after each use even when they're very busy (not normal in NYC even if a restaurant isn't busy.) I might go back.
Visited Stolovaya for lunch. The Charcho and Russian-style chicken dumpling soups were excellent! The Kiev chicken (I had it with mashed potatoes and my wife had it with buckwheat) was disappointing - dry and lacking flavor, felt overpriced. Kompot was perfect. The atmosphere was good, bustling with people. Service was excellent and fast. Overall, it has a Soviet Union vibe, though the food quality back then felt better. Good for a quick bite. I'd suggest trying other items on the menu.
One of my family's favorite places, delicious and not expensive. The kebabs and salads are very tasty, but I don't recommend taking the fish (it tasted like it was frozen). Very rude waitresses, both of them, the guys who served us before were very polite and responsive. The women are rude, snap back and it feels like they've been there too long and don't want to hold on to their jobs😡
I'm a latino guy who loves to taste food of different countries. So I decided to eat Russian food with a friend. The food was excellent, so delicious. The place was clean and well-organized. Everything was perfect until the staff were rude. One guy wanted to take my plate with food. He didn't ask me if I finished, he just took it. Another guy was looking at us with anger and keep an eye on us all the time, only us. I felt that they didn't like our presence.
Deceptive charges on the bill I rarely write reviews, but this experience deserves attention. This cafe in Brooklyn operates with the same scam tactics that are becoming way too common lately. When we received the check, a service charge was already added. On top of that, they added tax ON the service charge, which is not right and not even supposed to happen. And of course, after all of this, they still suggest leaving an additional tip - which we did before noticing the issue. When I called the restaurant for clarification, the administrator immediately started with the typical line: “Was there something wrong with the service?” Our concern had nothing to do with the service - we simply wanted to understand why there were extra unexplained dollars on the bill. The only explanation we received was that “half of the service charge is a tip and it goes to the staff.” When I asked where the other half goes, nobody could give a clear answer. This is the same scheme used by places like Anatolian Gyro. Please, STOP scamming people P.S. Borsch soup goes without meat. It is a joke
Several people recommended this place to me. Today, I came specifically to eat. Honestly, I wasn't particularly impressed by the food, I took half a kharcho - the taste is normal for soup, home-style fried potatoes, which were oversalted, the chicken shashlik also tasted so-so, I didn't finish it. The atmosphere - you could hear a female waitress scolding another waiter about temperature control. For me, when I come somewhere to have a tasty meal, I wouldn't really want to listen to such things, I think the employees could solve such issues after work or before the start of the shift... Overall, I give it a 3, no more.
Granted this place claims an unique handle on Soviet style food it is still located in New York and should have a menu in English. Our first choice was unlucky. Liver, Turkish style was awful, not fresh, over breaded and very salty. Had to be sent back. Schnitzel was better but still too generously salted. The tap beer is served with a ton of foam on top. There were no sodas on the menu. The borscht was good. Very ordinary place after all. Not sure the cook is good either.
An update: visited this place recently: prices got much higher! Food got a bit worse, sizes are a bit smaller. Ordered grilled fish - was too fatty and soggy. My wife didn't eat it. French fries were also soggy. Looking at the menu- Prices wise- fried potatoes with mushrooms is $13?! That's greedy. 2 sticks of shish kebab (shashlik) from beef is $14?! That's grabby! No side-dishes are included for that place. It's a no for me. What a pity, it used to be a great and delicious cafe! Awesome Russian cuisine cafe! The food is authentic, portions are nice, prices are affordable. The staff is pleasant, always double-checks on orders making sure they are correct. The kitchen gives food fast! Food itself is tasty, you can't go wrong with salads, soups, or entrees. As a desert we order "pirogi" (vareniki) with cherries and with sweet cheese. For the prices - you get a great portion on your plate. Really happy with this place!
Food was horrible. Borch was disgusting like tomato paste w vinegar. Pelmeni were tasteless. The service is 0 stars as usual
When I first came in I was surprised how dirty and messy this place. Then they brought high chair for baby- was dirty. For a minute I thought, if this chair is dirty how it can be a good place to eat?! However, I decided to order cherry vareniki which looked like soup. The place itself is very gloomy and tables not wiped out.
Well, to be honest, I don`t like . There are lots of Russian traditional food, but they are not making it tasty at all. Service are even worst than a food. Servers are not smiling and I after opening their door I have a feeling that I come to somebody`s home without invitation. That was my first and last time there.
I ordered a kebab and it was the most disgusting food I have ever eaten: tough, tasteless meat with a huge amount of salt. I said this to the waitress, she just shrugged her shoulders and asked to pay the bill, which already included a huge tip. I still feel like I ate something spoiled. The salad wasn't much better. DISGUSTING PLACE.
I had a disappointing experience when trying to make a reservation for my daughter's birthday. The person who answered the phone was incredibly rude and lacked basic customer service skills. Despite my efforts to remain patient, I decided to cancel the reservation after she asked how long we would be eating there—it just felt like a strange question. The food at this place is decent, but nothing extraordinary. The atmosphere, however, is great and really gives you the feeling of being in an old Soviet cafe.
I am absolutely appalled by the lack of understanding and disrespect shown by this restaurant. I was denied entry because of my service dog, which is not only incredibly rude but also illegal. As a person who relies on my service animal for medical reasons, this was beyond frustrating. The staff seemed completely unaware of the laws surrounding service animals and made me feel unwelcome. I will never return to this establishment and advise to stay away as well
Been coming for many years for good food. Called today to inquire about having dinner with family after the funeral service (поминки). The lady who answered was very insensitive to the type of occasion , kept talking about how much money we need to spend minimum (money wasn't an object only availability so I don't know why that was mentioned numerous times ), said I have to come in to order food ahead (I could have ordered ahead and paid in advance over the phone or spoken to in a different manner to come in and I would have ) and then she said we have a large crowd that afternoon coming and it will be busy (again not sure why). It felt so terrible talking to her, that in this difficult time all I wanted was to speak to someone who would help me make reservation and be nice. Her tone , her attitude made me regret calling. For that reason I won't come back even for the better occasions. You have to serve kindness , not just food.
Ordered food for pick up came waited for over 40 minutes they ended up giving my order to someone else waited again for another half hour this is bad reputation waste of my precious time !
BE AWARE OF BAD SERVICE I would not even give a one star. So sad.. We were four people and patiently were waiting when table for us would be available. As u can see only table for two was available. New customers came after us ,couple. They were also patiently waiting. Finally, the lady got time to clean table for SIX and give it to new customers . BUT not for us . She looked at couple and said them to come and sit … We asked if they maybe had reservation, and serving lady lied to us , “they gonna be 5 “ !!! She lie , after we heard that couple were looking for table for TWO PERSON!!! Waiters left us with a word “ wait for available table” We left. I am really upset. I came to that place for the first and last time. Maybe it happened for better to us. At least got couple candies.
I never write reviews and especially on food that I am not native to. I love borscht! I have had borscht a thousand different ways since i was 8 or 9 and this was absolutely one of the worst I ever had! How do you make borscht with out meat and have the nerve to charge 20 for a half pint 🤔 and on top of that its like an American trying to be russian made the soup because u can clearly taste its tomato soup that just had veggies put in! Even if you dont put meat in it it should taste like it had some! No beef broth no beef no real taste of borscht. The beef stragnoff was good cold but good I am not the only person who had borscht and they are not happy I doubt we will ordering from here again ! Mind you I had been told to stop in but I most likely never will so sad cause I had been looking for a place to get Russian food from :(
