I travel to the Burlingame/Redwood City area about once a month so I like to try different places to eat. This was one of my favorites. Service was great and very knowledgeable. My server answered all my questions and made great recommendations based on my feedback. (I like spicy 🔥). I ordered the Vegetarian Samusas, Curry Chicken with coconut rice, and Pork Basil stir fry. It was all awesome & I have plenty for my lunch tomorrow. The parking is a bit tough, but it is on downtown Burlingame. But there are parking lots around with signs directing you.
This is a go to for me and my family! Everything that we have not disappoint us. It doesn’t matter if we dine in or delivery. This is a few of our favorite dishes. Tea leaf salad, pork and pumpkin stew, salt & pepper prawns, basil spicy fish, any type of curry, and won’t forget about the paratha.
I’ve been to a few Burmese restaurants and Mingalaba is my favorite! When we arrived on a Tuesday night the restaurant was full with a brief wait, so clearly others agree. They have the best tea leaf salad I have ever tasted. We also enjoyed the other dishes we got: -Burmese Style Noodles were very good, we weren’t sure what to expect since they come room temp but we loved every bite. -Pan Fried String Beans with Pork was salty but flavorful -Rangoon Beef was solid too Overall a great spot!
Authentic food and friendly service. What else can you ask for. The vibe is cozy and relaxed. The staff have always been accommodating when I have my toddler. The chicken curry and catfish chowder noodle soups are perfect for cold weather.
Loved their Burmese coconut chicken soup! Service was great, waiters were really nice and attentive. Ambience was nice and cozy. A room for improvement would be to add a small portion (half bowl?) of white rice with any curry, with option to change to other type of rice or bread for additional cost.
Mingalaba is a wonderful restaurant - interesting mix of different food types. They do have my favorite spring roll of any restaurant I've ever eaten at - a spring roll (not deep fried) with tempura shrimp wrapped in avocado with a Burmese sauce that is really delicious. Also like the string beans with tofu, the Tea Leaf Salad and the vegetable chow fun - just very delicious. The service is wonderful, the people are nice, not long waits - just a nice place. Very casual - nothing fancy but if you want authentic food that tastes great, this is a wonderful place. I've also found that their take-out is really good too - comes hot, timely and not overly-priced. Strongly recommended.
Really impressed by the staff’s attention to detail. Just one small example of how much they are paying attention was that they noticed my two year-old had chewed up her paper straw and they brought her out a new straw without us mentioning anything. The food was excellent. We liked all the dishes we ordered. We especially like the samosa soup and the house noodles. We would definitely come back here again.
The perfect weeknight dinner. The waitress made us feel right at home and was managing to sell everyone in the restaurant on young coconut or ginger lemonade, both worth it. I loved the samusas which weren’t spicy at all. I didn’t love the house special noodles with coconut chicken which consisted of overcooked linguine with tiny bites of chicken and crispy noodles thrown on top.
We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered, with each dish bursting with flavor. The Shan noodles and samosa soup were standout favorites for us. However, the portion sizes were on the smaller side, and one main course per person was not quite enough to leave us fully satisfied. While the prices were a bit on the higher end for the quantity, the quality of the food was exceptional, so we felt it was worth it. Additionally, the service was top-notch, with attentive and friendly staff. There is a mandatory 16% service fee, so be sure to factor that in if you're not comfortable with it.
This was my second time eating dinner here. The staff is by accommodating to making dishes vegan so there are plenty of choices (as well as fish and meat for those who enjoy those options) all of these dishes featured in the photos would be highly recommended options + coconut rice - just show the staff the image and I’m sure they can help you figure out what it is 😇
The fish curry was flavorful and perfectly spiced, with tender fish that soaked up the delicious sauce. The coconut rice was fragrant and creamy, a perfect match for the curry. The service was friendly and the atmosphere cozy, making it a great place for any meal. If you’re looking for authentic Burmese food, I highly recommend trying the fish curry and coconut rice here.
Delicious and unique vegetarian food! My only gripe is the quantity compared to the cost. For around $20 per dish, I expected a more generous quantity for entrees.
Very tasty food everytime we have been. One feedback for the restaurant is that for the price, you may consider the portion size .its very very small portion sizes. When you are charging almost 18 to 20 dollars per dish, offer more than a cup of food so customer feels a bit satisfied. It won’t cost you that much more and it will make your customers even more happy.
Been here a couple times now. Their usually pretty busy and requires a wait. It's a relatively small sized restaurant. Had the tea leaf salad $18.50, coconut chicken soup $18.50, lamb curry dahl $25, Burmese style curry chicken $19, Burmese style curry prawns $24, tampoi rice $10. All the food is slightly above average. Portions are a but small for the price. Service is decent. Food takes a while to come out. Overall, it's decent. But I do have pretty high standards for Burmese food since I have Burmese family and have tried a lot of Burmese restaurants
Found Mingalaba off of Yelp. Two of us ordered: palatha crispy pancake with curry $11.50 lap pat dok salad $18 house special noodle $18 Flavors were good. Staff was friendly. Sat immediately for a Monday dinner. Street parking only. Came on a holiday, so didn't need to pay, otherwise, seems like metered parking only. Can definitely be hard to find spots during peak hours.
Mingalaba is a solid spot for Burmese food. I visited with a friend and overall, we had a good experience. The dishes were flavorful and well-prepared — definitely captured the essence of Burmese cuisine. We ordered three dishes along with a bowl of rice for each of us. While everything tasted great, the portion sizes felt a bit lacking. For two people, the amount of food wasn’t quite enough, even with three different dishes. We left still a bit hungry. That said, everything else was great. The service was attentive, and the waitstaff were friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was casual but welcoming. If the portion sizes were just a bit more generous, this would easily be a top pick. Still, worth visiting for the taste and overall experience.
came here on a weekday evening and we were seated immediately. we ordered the pumpkin chicken curry and the rainbow salad. the salad was flavorful and delicious, and the curry was good although the portions were small, there were only a few pieces of chicken but 3 massive pieces of kabocha squash that basically took up the entire bowl. overall was a good dinner, just wish the portions were more reasonable for the price.
Samosas and paratha first dishes were very good. Samosas were large and not over oily. House noodles was middling. Curries and basil pork were very good. Tea salad was tasty but a small portion. Fairly expensive with the mandatory service charges. Service is uneven quality. Outdoor eating area can be very noisy with the hard, low ceiling and the car traffic very close by.
TL;DR: In a vacuum the food is okay and the service is great, but in context with the pricing and competition it's not good. Good things first - The service is fantastic. It's quick, courteous, and enhances the experience noticeably. The tea leaf salad is very good and I have gotten it every visit. It's seasoned very well while being pretty light, and the crunch and nuttiness is unmatched by any other similar salad I've had. Okay, now the not so good - The mango chicken was disappointing. The white meat chicken pieces used were small, all of them being as small if not smaller than popcorn chicken pieces. The mango part of this dish was literally just pieces of mango mixed in with the chicken. Mixed in. Not fried with the chicken nor was there a sauce. The dish was dry sauteed bits of white meat with chunks of mango in it. When the fish fillet with black bean sauce came out, my first question was, "is this it?" and my second was, " where's the black bean?" There were only about 15 pieces of black bean in the entire dish and the flavor reflected that. The dish was also 60% steamed/blanched broccoli too. This $24 dish gave us 5, maybe 6 bites of unnamed white fish with a black bean garnish and a head of broccoli. Overall, this most recent visit is the most disappointed I've been. I gave it 3 chances before posting this review and won't be revisiting.
