Had an amazing dinner here this weekend, ordered the rib-eye for mains and it was superb, fat beautifully rendered and very delicious with all the trimmings on the side. Wine was lovely too. Service was nice also despite it being a busy Saturday evening. Only thing that could have made the experience better is if our special occasion note on our booking would have been perhaps acknowledged throughout our meal. Although I would definitely still recommend!
Can't rate this place highly enough! They accommodated my request for a specific table, even though we booked quite late, and our slightly awkward changes to standard dishes were dealt with easily and with a smile. The service was fantastic, the food fabulous, and there is a nice choice of non-alcoholic drinks, so we could have some sparkling dealcoholised wine. Would absolutely recommend thst you eat here if you're in Cambridge!
Absolutely lovely food, one of the best meals I've ever had. The portion sizes for the price were more than enough. The food itself had lovely complimentary flavours and the dishes themselves were presented lovely. Waitresses checked often to make sure the food and everything was okay but not too much we felt harrassed.
You guys are winners. All I can say is well-done. I truly think this place is amazing. Yes I like steak 🥩 as I have mentioned in my profile but I do eat other things lol... This place gets everything right. The food is really good and they are a nice bunch of people. I had the exceptional time and this I must say is dining at its best. Go check it out.
Absolutely amazing! One of the highlights of my trip. Coming to the Cambridge Chop House for a Sunday roast was the best decision I made - it completely redefined my view of English cuisine. Now, when I think of English food, I think of their beef Sunday roast. The interior is warm and cozy and its location in the heart of Cambridge makes it perfect for a relaxed lunch after exploring the city. The team is incredibly kind and welcoming. I recommend making a reservation if you’re visiting for Sunday roast. Portions are generous, the food is delicious and the prices are very reasonable. I wholeheartedly recommend this place!
Loved this place. Had a beautifully cooked fillet steak. Mash and mushroom sauce also lovely. Whole table really enjoyed their meals. Got the sharing platter to start, some interesting takes on classic British food such as haggis fritters! Staff were very friendly and attentive. Would recommend booking in advance and getting a table upstairs. Sticker toffee pudding perhaps a tad too sweet
Another one of those occasional finds that deserve 6 stars. Food, drink, service, venue all absolutely superb. You'd be forgiven for thinking that it might be overpriced and tourist quality given its location, but it's nothing of the sort. We had Haggis fritters and pork crackling bites and they were superb. Then we had mains of steak, Burger, Mussels and Pie and Mash and all were absolutely perfect. I had the burger, and it was one of the best I've ever had. So well seasoned. Though they were busy, the staff were friendly and warm and had time for us. The wine list was excellent. The Cinsault with the burger was exceptional. We had cocktails as well. The Old Fashioned and the Elderflower Collins were fantastic. Can't fault the place.
First time visiting and I have found my new favourite restaurant in Cambridge. The food was outstanding the staff were all very friendly and the service was quick and efficient. The prices are on the higher end but the quality easily made it worth it, will definitely be back Addition - Been back for our second visit to the Cambridge chop house and revived the same 5 star service and food as the first time, cannot recommend this restaurant enough if you are happy to pay slightly higher prices but the quality and service justified the prices!
Upstairs is bright and full of light so you can watch people go about their day as they walk past. Downstairs is darker and much more pub lunch/dinner vibes. Both really lovely depending on what you want. The food was good - the roast dinner, but the cauliflower cheese seemed to have only been shown the cheese, rather than it being incorporated into the dish - more cheese please!!! Other than that, it was a lovely experience for me and my friends
Absolutely stunning meal!! We just happened to wonder in and we were so glad we did! The beef short ribs were outstanding! Melt in your mouth meat and extremely tasty. We also ordered the pie and were very impressed. Upstairs seating has a lovely ambiance with views of the university & downstairs is in the cellar, again very pretty place to sit.
Had a nice lunch at the chop house this week. Good was a little slow coming out, but with the wait. I had the sausages with mashed which were very tasty, my wife had the grazing plate... Appetizer sampler and enjoyed everything except the pork skins. I thought they were fine but she didn't like the texture being too hard. My son's dish was the start though, the burger... Very tasty, perfectly cooked and we all thought it was great. Lovely view from the table and spot on service.
Tried the Sunday Roast here at the Chop House after hearing some recommendations. I ordered Pork Crackling to start, this came with a small dish of Apple Puree which I would recommend dipping the very (VERY) crispy and crunchy pork skin in to soften up first. Salty but very flavorful, it was a good introduction to the meal. Our drinks came out, Passionfruit Martini and an Espresso Martini. Both were delicious and hit all the spots. It was a tough decision deciding on which Sunday roast meal to order; Chicken, Pork Belly, or Beef. I ended up choosing the triple which gives each of the three selections. The meal came out and all three meats were delicious and cooked well. Only thing I can even try to say is negative is that the beef was very tough to cut and chew, but it still was incredibly flavorful and that more than made up for it. The gravy that covered the meal was rich and complimented the texture and taste of the veggies and meat in an exquisite manner. I would recommend coming here for Sunday Roast to anybody that is looking for a great meal and good environment.
Fabulous Food! This was a great find for us with my family. We were looking for a place that was dog friendly were we could eat outside this summer. The Chop House was perfect. The food was fabulous, they were really nice with our dog (even bringing water in a bowl and the view is incredible. The menu was also large enough to suit all the difficult taste of the four of us. Highly recommended!
Ate here on 4th Nov. Service was lovely, friendly and inviting. Food was delicious. I had set menu 3 courses for £29 which was excellent value and included haggis fritters, treacle cured pork ribeye and dark chocolate delice. Husband had full menu with scallops, rump steak and sticky toffee pudding. Couldn't fault food or service.
Fantastic place, great cuisine, master Chef 5 stars menu, wonderful venue and everything is perfect! 100% recommendations, this is the best Cambridge Restaurant with super atmosphere. We have excellent experience and we are back with group soon. Thank you for the best XMAS time and quality food. Chef is the best! Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE
Excellent steaks, great wine, superb service… and a great place to people watch. Get a window seat if you can which overlook King’s College. Prices on the higher side, but you’re paying for quality. Recommend the T-bone - absolutely sublime.
Delicious modern British food and the best place for steak in Cambridge. The service is always exceptional and I love the atmosphere downstairs, especially in the side room with vaulted ceilings. A little on the pricy side of course but definitely worth it. Portions are big and there are some cheaper dishes available too. Haven't tried the Sunday roast yet but looking forward to it!
Delicious food, especially the starters. My steak was cooked to perfection and exactly as requested. Staff were friendly and attentive. Easily accommodated us with a pram which we were delighted with. Would recommend and will definitely return!
Excellent place for meat ! We had the Chateaubriand and it was cooked perfectly, nice side dishes and a decent wine list. The service was so friendly and atmosphere like a French brasserie. The view out the window is of Kings College which isn’t too bad !
Charming restaurant in a central part of the city. Great menu choices, and the food was fantastic. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and gave good recommendations. The food was delicious, served quickly and hot. It is one of the best places in town for steak because it has plenty of choices. I'd recommend the potted rabbit on the current menu and a decent rib eye with chunky, hand cut, triple cooked chips. I am looking forward to coming back again soon.
A MUST GO. The staff are so welcoming and nothing is too much trouble, they really made us feel welcome and comfortable and their knowledge on the menu and drinks was exceptional. The food is outstanding, we will definitely be back. Thank you so much chop house
We got a lovely warm welcome, even though we were slightly late and got seated by the window and Vito brought over a complementary glass of prosecco each as it was our wedding anniversary, a lovely touch. The food and service was outstanding, couldn't fault it and my wife loved Vito's cocktails while l enjoyed the OTT pale ale. Alexandra our server was amazing, as l forgot to ask when ordering to take out the tomatoes and onions from my burger if there was any due an allergy but when l did ask when the starters arrived, she also checked if we had any other allergies, even though we had already been asked, spot on! When she served the burger, she had made sure that the dressing, coleslaw and onion rings (as my wife had them) were served separately as the dressing had tomato in it and the coleslaw had raw onion in it, l hadn't asked for this, Alexandra took it upon herself to arrange my burger like this and thought this was amazing service. When we left, Vito, walked us to door and thanked us for custom wishing us lovely evening/anniversary and recommended a further bar to visit for cocktails. We would highly recommend this restaurant in Cambridge, a lovely find amongst the many other places in the city.
To call this a restaurant would be a crime against the passion for life. I came alone and experienced absolutely amazing dining. The atmosphere could make you fall in love. The palate experience could keep you in love. And the service helps you understand what love really is. Would recommend…
Absolutely delicious meal. Steak was cooked to perfection Service was excellent. I would certainly dine here again
Walked in and lucky to have a table for 2. Next visit, safer to make reservations. Ordered 2 set menu. The Soup and Sardines were the side dishes that were served as starters. Then came the main menu, The Coley and the Steak. All served in a timely manner. First time having Coley, tasted fresh and fleshy. Loved the place and service.
We had all the “pre chew” side plates, which were fabulous. The Brie bites were a particular highlight for me, the olives were huge! My wife had a burger, which was unbelievable. I had the chop house steak, which is a shoulder cut marinated in herbs, cooked perfectly, mouthwatering. Service was friendly and attentive. The 12.5% service charge actually goes to the staff too, so the company as a whole have a big fat yes from me. Really enhanced our trip to Cambridge and we will definitely revisit should we return to Cambridge in the future.
Steak and cambridge burnt cream were both very tasty. Service was great and they gave a little candle for mother's day for my mum. It was a little expensive around £34-44+ for a steak, but a good treat on occassion.
Our last dinner with my daughter, Izzy, during our final trip to Cambridge was a truly fantastic experience. We chose the Cambridge Chop House, and it turned out to be the perfect place for a special evening. The atmosphere was just right—quiet yet lively—allowing us to enjoy our time together without distractions. Izzy chose the T-bone steak, while I had the ribeye, both cooked to a perfect medium-rare. The steaks were exceptionally flavorful, tender, and juicy, prepared with the kind of care and precision you’d hope for in a great steakhouse. Every bite was deeply satisfying. We paired our meal with Malbec #26 from the wine list, an excellent choice that complemented the richness of the steaks beautifully. The wine’s deep, complex notes elevated the entire dining experience. Cambridge Chop House exceeded our expectations with its high-quality food, well-curated wine selection, and warm, inviting ambiance. It was the perfect place for a special farewell dinner with Izzy, and I would happily return on a future visit to Cambridge.
Family dinner Very polite and friendly service from all staff Food was very tasty. Very fresh, good portion size and worth the money. Nice atmosphere we sat by the window watching people walk by. But the downstairs looked nice too. Would recommend.
Perfect dinner place for celebrating a beautiful May day. Do not miss out on their set menu, available from Monday to Thursday, before 6:30pm. We went for the two-course set, with a cauliflower soup as the starter. Rich and delicious, great combination with their house bread. A little bit salty but overall it’s quality stuff. We then got the butler steak and the pan fried coley. I would particularly recommend the steak, which is very tender. Service is excellent too! Nice experience overall!
This is the second year we have had a family get together at the Chop House on New Year’s Eve. The food was delicious and we were looked after very well. Thank you for sitting us in the cosy area we had asked for! Happy New Year to all at the Chop House.
A truly fantastic meal and they were able to fit us in on a busy Saturday night. The staff and service were on point, knowledgeable and friendly. The steak was brilliant and perfectly cooked. The chefs were kind enough to let us see where the sausage gets made which was a real treat. Not a single thing to fault from start to end, left feeling well feed and happy. Safe to say, recommended.
We made a reservation for Sunday at 12.30 lunch time to try their roast dinner. We arrived ahead of schedule, around 12.10. Despite this, the host was very welcoming and quickly showed us to our table. Once seated, we ordered two soft drinks (rhubarb lemonade and a ginger beer) and two roast dinners - pork belly and chicken. The drinks were brought first and then after another 5 minutes, the roasts came. Once we started eating, my partner told me that her chicken was very dry, and she asked the waiter to bring some extra gravy. My dish had a bit too much fat for my liking, although the taste was ok. I ate everything apart from the extra fat, as the picture shows. We did not receive a check-back whilst eating. However when we were getting ready to pay for the bill, we gave our feedback to the host. At this point, Vito - our host, was very professional and offered his apologies for the weak points of the dishes and from the original bill he deducted the chicken roast. We were very pleasantly surprised by this and whenever we'll be back around the area, we'll try one of their other dishes. I had originally planned to give 3 ⭐, however Vito has gone above and beyond, so just for him I'll give 4 ⭐
One of the most famous steakhouse in Cambridge, is it worth the hype? Sharing chateaubriand was tender and juicy, cooked to the right temperature however flavour was not very strong which is understandable as it’s from tenderloin but even without chargrilled flavour it tastes bit bland. Ribeye was better, cooked to the right temperature and great flavour and still tender enough. Nice chips and salad, sauces were okay but red wine sauce was bit watery as the seasoning was not strong enough. Very quick and friendly service, foods arrived in good time, cool and cozy interior but some chairs and tables felt bit uncomfortable. Overall, great service with average food, not sure if it’s worth the price as I can think of good couple of other steakhouse in Cambridge that has better value and quality of the steak
Lovely restaurant immediately opposite Kings College. The atmosphere is cosy and relaxed with hearty food. The burgers here are outstanding. One of our guest’s meat dishes wasn’t great (tough) but the staff were very responsive and replaced it as quickly as they could. Impressive. I can highly recommend the chocolate tart dessert which came with an incredible tangy berry compote - perfect!
The restaurant was so disappointing that I haven’t been here for four years. (Yes the steak was bland and lackluster even after two weeks of post-arrival quarantine, and the second meal with friends was equally bad despite the good companionship.) Now with the coming back of tourists, even the staff become ruder than before :) Starters are slow. 40 min wait is unacceptable. Steak is still chewy and tough despite the pinkness. Brighter side- haggis is lovely anyways (redeeming bites); fries are alright; capers are nice addition to the salad. The prawns on the next table are quite impressively large… maybe it can justify +£9 onto add on the salad.
Large Portions The restaurant is always busy whenever I pass by this restaurant. Looks like a popular place. Feel gutted when reading the menu, as it's quite expensive. Now I understand why it's more expensive. Because it has the largest portion size than other town centre pubs. You get what you pay for. Food tastes nice though. The pie was full of tender meat inside. It's a well made pie with quality meat. 100% fool proof pie. While the pie of The Bridge( at the Waterbeach) has only a little bit of meat and a lot ofvegetables with a puff pastry on the top. The Sunday roast had quality beef slices. The vegetables were well cooked, no overdone issue. The potatoes were crispy outside and soft inside, not hard. Spot quite a lot of customers failed to finish their plates. I wondered how much food waste the restaurant creates everyday? Oh no. I strongly suggest you go if you have a serious appetite. Or with empty stomach. Busy restaurant, busy staff. The staff misheard me that I do not want to have a look on their dessert menu. Nevermind. We were too full to have dessert anyway......
At the prices you would expect amazing food. If I’m paying £38 for a 10oz steak I expect it to be exquisite. I don’t expect it to be undercooked and/or bleeding all over the plate. Nice chips, and other people seemed to have nice looking food but, for me, the serving of steak was well below par.
I have to say I was disappointed. I wanted to come to this place since the first day I arrived at Cambridge. However the quality and service didn’t meet my expectation. The appetiser were good, but the porterhouse we ordered was burnt. So I asked for solution when my server came to ask, and the manager told us there is no way to get this fixed cuz the fillet part supposed to be thinner. So a chophouse can’t serve proper classic steak? Eventually we were convinced to change our order to a regular fillet, it was fine. The venison was also over cooked, the meat was dry and hard. The overall experience made me dissatisfied, the quality of steak is under expectation.
