From the moment we walked into Via Roma, we knew we were in for something special. The atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between cozy and refined, making it ideal for both a relaxed dinner and a celebratory night out. What truly elevated the experience, however, was the exceptional service, attentive, warm, and genuinely welcoming without ever feeling intrusive. We started with two appetizers, and both set the tone beautifully. The Fritto Misto — flash-fried calamari and zucchini served with a spicy marinara — was crisp, light, and perfectly seasoned. The calamari was tender (no rubbery bites here), and the zucchini added a subtle sweetness that paired wonderfully with the marinara’s gentle heat. It’s the kind of dish that disappears from the table quickly. Next came the Polpettine, housemade beef meatballs in tomato sauce. These were rich, hearty, and clearly made with care. The tomato sauce deserves special mention, balanced, flavorful, and comforting without being overly acidic. You can taste the depth and slow-simmered quality in every bite. For the main course, we ordered the Mare, a generous medley of lobster, shrimp, calamari, clams, and mussels over linguine, with your choice of white or red sauce. This dish was the star of the evening. The seafood was fresh and cooked perfectly: the lobster tender, the shrimp plump, and the shellfish briny and vibrant. We opted for the red sauce, which complemented the seafood beautifully. The pasta was cooked al dente, tying the entire dish together with classic Italian precision. If there was one minor disappointment, it was the soda. It was poured from a can and unfortunately tasted flat, which felt slightly out of place compared to the otherwise polished dining experience. That said, it was a small blemish on an otherwise excellent meal. Overall, Via Roma delivers on flavor, freshness, and hospitality. The sauces are memorable, the seafood impressive, and the service truly outstanding. Aside from the minor soda hiccup, it was a fantastic dining experience, one we’d happily return for.

Via Roma is a charming and vibrant street filled with history, style, and energy. Lined with elegant shops, cafés, and beautiful architecture, it perfectly captures the spirit of Italian life. Whether for shopping, strolling, or people-watching, Via Roma is a must-see in any Italian city!

Service here was great. Several people helped wait on our table so we were never without a full drink and food. The ambience inside is nice and intimate feeling. The food was all really good. We tried the seafood special, ravioli, chicken dish, carbonara and scallops. Everyone at our table enjoyed the meal.

We had an amazing time at Via Roma! The lamb shank was ridiculous, risotto and scallops were perfectly cooked, the pasta is all homemade. Our server was fantastic, the restaurant was jam packed but she checked on us multiple times and had a great personality. It was our anniversary and they made us feel special 😁

We enjoyed this small, intimate restaurant and highly recommend it to others! The star dishes of the night were the Pasta del Giorno and the Osso Buco followed closely by both appetizers we ordered and the panna cotta for dessert. Roasted Octopus Appetizer - Polipo Best octopus we ever had, cooked perfectly and very tender. Flavorful, tangy, Mediterranean-based spices. Crab Cakes Appetizer- (Daily Special) Well-seasoned, heavy on the crab meat and only minor filler. Surprisingly good and held-up well in comparison to a quality Maryland crab cake. Pasta del Giorno (Daily Special) This was a lovely, notable pasta dish. The fettuccini tasted homemade with a nice al dente texture in a light white wine and garlic sauce. The beef tips were an excellent addition as they balanced the light sauce and increased the depth of the dish without being too heavy. Further, the arugula and cherry tomatoes added a fresh, sweet summer taste to the dish without overcomplicating the dish. Overall, we loved this special and it was a highlight of the dinner. Osso Buco Fantastic, the veal was so tender that you could cut it with a fork. It was complemented well by the saffron risotto which was very flavorful and had a smooth, creamy texture. The sauce was a rich, tomato-based sauce that complemented the veal and risotto. They were thoughtful and included a small fork to access the bone marrow - which was delicious. Pesce del Giorno (Daily Special) Good pan-fried flounder that was cooked perfectly and paired with a well-seasoned spinach. Mare Classic seafood pasta in a marinara sauce. The clams, mussels, and lobster were tender and cooked perfectly. Panna Cotta This is one of my favorite traditional Italian desserts and it was well-represented here. It’s a sweet and tangy dessert that is fresh and light. The strawberry sauce was a strong, tangy complement to the sweet, custard. Tiramisu Good ratio of coffee to sweetness, not too bitter or too heavy on the cream. Crème brûlée Fantastic, hit the spot after a savory meal with a good balance of caramelized sugar to custard.

One of those hidden gems you hesitate to share because then the secret gets out. Great ambiance! Very attentive staff, our visit was seamless. Antipasto appetizer was good. I had the NC prawns with butternut squash risotto with balsamic reduction. Amazing! Tiramisu with cappuccino was delicious. Highly recommend. *2023 update-another incredible experience! From start to finish, great service and amazing food. I had the pasta del giorno which is cheese tortellini in parmesan sauce with truffle oil. *Late 2023 update-what can I say that I haven't said already...yet another amazing dinner. We started with the calamari and this time I had the carbonara and chocolate torte with an Americano. Great service as always.

So, the 1st thing to note is the restaurant is fairly small. Get there early, or their will be a wait. Next, the ambience is great. The pictures are beautiful. The waiter was amazing - so much so, that I had black pants on and had gone to the restroom to take a picture of the picture hanging in the restroom. I noticed that there was white lint all over my pants. I asked him if they had black napkins - they did! Then he also showed up with a lint brush! Amazing. The food was delicious - my husband had the Eggplant Involtini appetizer, the Pollo Ripieno, and Tiramisu; I had the Ensalata, it was really fresh, Pesce del Giorno, and Panna Cotta – chilled vanilla custard. The bread was light and airy. We couldn't have had a more delightful experience!

Via Roma is on the top of our list for revisiting. There are so many restaurants to chose from in the CLT area that make it hard to not explore the city however we will forever visit this amazing Italian spot. The service is always top tier and the food is amazing.

Via Roma is a great resturaunt. Polite staff and great food. The pasta was cooked/drained perfectly with an excellent cream red sauce. The fish was very flaky and tender. Chicken parmesan was crispy and flavorful. We enjoyed our experience.

By far, the best Italian restaurant in Charlotte and I have been to almost all of them. Very great for a date night.

I ate here with a large group (10+) and our waitress was superb. She was very knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the carbonara with chicken for my entree and I enjoyed the dish. The dining area is not the large so don’t expect to have any real privacy.

Romantic restaurant, perfect for a date or an outing with friends. The service is great and the food is delicious.

This place does fresh pasta and Roman cuisine right. I had the Mare pasta was fresh tagliatelle instead of linguine in white sauce. My husband Jim had the lasagna. The service and atmosphere was very pleasant.

What an excellent meal! Treating our friends to dinner - 6 people total. Our friends praised the quality and overall taste of their meal; and they should know since they lived and traveled in Italy for years. The beef fillet special entree was very good. The gnocchi was tasty, but there could have been a bit more cheese. Spaghetti and meatballs were excellent. The sea food plate was very good. Overall each plate was different, yet all tasted fresh and were not overally salty or spicy. Portion size was filling, maybe even a bit too much. Desserts were really terrific. Bread pudding was very good. Tiramisu and chocolate tort were great. The cream brulee was outstanding. All totalled, 6 people with entrees, one appetizer, 2 coffees, and 4 desserts was just under $360...and you got more food than you could eat. (Although we found a way to finish the desserts.) We are already planning on coming back again and trying more menu items. Reservations are preferred but not needed. Seating at the bar and outside I believe. Very nice seating inside. Only critique was the service. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu, but didn't return to the table for a while after serving the main course. We ended up asking a bus boy for butter during the meal and a dessert menu afterward.

Our family LOVES THIS RESTAURANT because there is something delicious for everyone on this menu. The wines are beautiful and accompany the cuisine perfectly. The atmosphere is elegant and inviting with a fun bar and festive cocktails. I can’t say enough about the staff, they are all fabulous!! They are always welcoming and offer friendly intuitive service. Thank you for so many wonderful celebrations!

Paul and Megan are probably the only reason I go there but it also would keep me coming for the fantastic calamari, gnocchi pasta and the desserts are amazing. My personal favorite is the panna cotta, I'm drooling just thinking about it. Paul has such a great personality that makes you feel welcome but also keeps it at a high class level, he knows how to conduct the table around him and a guest never leaves unhappy with any of his suggestions. Megan always has my usual order ready to go when we get to the host podium. If you want good food and an enjoyable experience check this place out.

This place is amazing. I’ve eaten here many many times. I’ve even moved further away and continue to make the drive to Via Roma. The staff are professional and efficient. Owner caters to the guest and is as authentic as you can get. If you want a restaurant that cares for its people and will provide consistent good service Via Roma is your spot.

By far one of the best meals and service I had in Charlotte for the longest. I had a 07:45PM sitting time and left a message to call if they had an earlier time, and they called me twice to offer different times to accommodate me. They seated our group of 7 as soon as we arrived. Meghan, our server, was fast, responsive, and on point. Drinks, appetizers, main course, coffee and dessert were served quickly. No food was left under the heat lamp before it was served. The bill was fast, and so was the box to go. The food was delicious!! Finally a restaurant in the area that is properly staffed.

This was my first time at Via Roma in Waverly. I can without doubt say that it was a real pleasure eating at this restaurant. It started with a waiter that was gracious as well as enthusiastic of serving our table. Secondarily, the food was well beyond normal Italian fare. The calamari was well prepared and tender. All the four main courses were wonderful. My “Mare” was excellent with half a lobster which I was not expecting. Just a superb evening.

Absolutely fantastic food! A little hidden gem away from uptown that definitely still deserves its flowers. I do recommend making a reservation on Fridays/Saturdays. I prefer their appetizers and entrees to their pastas, but their pastas are delicious as well. I enjoyed the beef carpaccio, the roasted octupus appeitizer, and the mare pasta with white sauce. I didn't find the caesar salad or the osso buco as delightful- the caesar dressing was missing umami, and the osso buco was not very tender. In terms of desserts, the tiramisu was amazing.

Very good service and great Italian inspired dishes. We eat here regularly (at least once a month), and have never been disappointed. All the dishes are top notch, reasonably priced and quite generous portions. Meghan is our favorite server (and she is also a great mixologist). She has been able to accommodate several special food and drink requests we have had. On our most recent visit, the weather was very nice, so we enjoyed the outdoor dining option. Highly recommended as the only negative to this restaurant is that indoors can be a bit noisy when the place is packed. PS. Make your weekend reservations at least a week in advance to secure a good time, and don't make it too late or some of the more popular dishes will run out by the time you get to dinner.

Great food! I mean top rate, tasty and has a great atmosphere. Definitely try out the pasta. The only complaint I have is that they seemed to be a little short staffed, as our waitress was running around in between a lot of tables and it took her a little while to get back to us. She was never unpleasant!

After a super busy day, my husband and I called ahead to Via Roma on a week night to express our need for quiet, delicious meal. We were not disappointed. Given a table far from the bar in a little room, we were able to relax and enjoy a sumptuous meal. The staff is personable, efficient and attentive. Our dietary needs were honored (no salt for me), and our food was delicious. We will definitely return.

We enjoy Via Roma EVERY single visit. Fabulous Italian food, wine, cocktails, and desserts served impeccably in their intimate dining room. It's a great place for a romantic evening, celebration (have a Charlotte Master Singer deliver your "happy birthday" serenade), dinner with good friends, or for someone you want to impress. Highly recommended!

Horrible experience…. Maybe because it’s close to Christmas but still.. who wants to pay that kind of money to not get what you are paying for! Terrible service at our table. The food was ok. Couldn’t get refills on your drinks without asking.

6/4/2024 Went here after 5 years. Just couldn't go after pandemic. In celebration of my birthday. The place lives up to its quality and ambience. Their service is one of the best. Staff is super friendly. Love love the food. It was so noisy, that going with my toddler was just fine (was nervous if it's gonna be super quite)... they are open only for dinner, reservations are highly recommended.. 2019 Nice ambience .... cozy.. fine dining... went for a celebration... loved the food.. a small restaurant.. a little expensive ..

Food and service were amazing! I ordered the chicken Parmigiano and it was very delicious. My guest and I also ordered the bruschetta (great flavor with a nice cruch) and she got the Rigatoni. Server was helpful and knowledgeable, although she was busy on this Friday evening, my drink was only empty once. A few notes: Need to make a reservation to get a regular table, I ended up at a high top which was okay, but my dinner guest wasn't as comfortable (she is shorter and doesn't do well at high top tables). Parking is a bit cumbersome because of the shopping center design, you may need to park on the other side of Carolina Ale House and walk around. Not terrible just something to note if you are accompanying handicapped or elderly persons or if it's raining. I would go back for a special occasion or celebration, it was on the pricey side for just a regular dinner in my opinion.

We really liked the restaurant and were fortunate to get maybe the only round booth? So we were able to sit closer in order to talk and hear each other. Food was very good, lovely upscale/intimate ambiance...but very loud. No sound buffers. Lol may try sitting in the more quiet bar area next time. Will definitely be back!

Our visit was impromptu, so we did not have a reservation. It was relatively early, so we were able to be seated, although the scorn of the hostess that we had no reservation, was obvious. Once past the gatekeeper, the experience improved greatly. Our server Paul, was friendly, engaging and enthusiast about the menu. Strong drinks, smooth wine, and exceptionally well-prepared food. The Polipo as an app was very pleasing, scallops were jumbo and tender, Mare full of tasty seafood, everything presented to appropriate temperature and seasoned perfectly. Minus the initial greeting, a fine dining experience that we would easily enjoy again.

Had work xmas party here. Food was good. Portion size was exceptable. Staff were friendly. The table we sat at was wobbly and the chairs looked tattered.

S

Its really nice looking inside and the service is good, but I don't consider this great food, prior to the pandemic the quality and portions where much better and price to quality was fair, it's not terrible but it's not great Italian food whatsoever, and it's super noisy and loud, you can't here yourself think, portions are very small and food was bland. Sorry but it's true.

E
Elena Pickering

Unlikely previous pleasant experiences, we were rushed through dinner. Several staff members hovered over the tables asking if we were done. Our server was great, kiddos to her. Today’ other staff has much to learn from the staff at Toscana.

M
Michelle Smith

The service is wonderful. Let me start by saying that. The atmosphere is as well. The food and the wine not so much. The wine selection is sub optimal in that you cannot get a lovely Oakey chardonnay. The food was my biggest issue the last time I was there. I ordered Angel Hair Pasta and wanted just olive oil and garlic and that seemed to be too complicated. They do not have Angel hair pasta so I ordered the regular Spaghetti pasta with Alfredo sauce. The portion was that of large side. The sauce was awful. It did not taste good and it had a paste like texture. I ate a bit of it since I was there with friends but discarded most of it. The kicker was my bill. I was charged $24 for a reasonably small bowl of a pasta with a sauce that was sadly really not good. The atmosphere is great and the female bar tender is amazing. I was just appalled at the cost of the awful pasta. Next time I will have a mixed drink beverage and I probably will not dine. :(

We recently moved to the area and were recommended to dine at this location. Our experience was mixed, as the service and atmosphere were excellent, but the food fell short of our expectations. Specifically, my chicken parmigiana was overcooked and dry, and my wife's lasagna had a processed taste. The prices did not match the quality of the meal.

d
david ramsay

I'll start by saying that the service and atmosphere, as well as the wine, were excellent. Unfortunately, the food just was not up to snuff for the price point. Our server was great, extremely attentive, polite, and knowledgeable regarding which wines they had on hand and which were out of stock. Service was fast and the wait for the food was nice and short. The food was disappointing. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't actively bad... but it really was not great. The osso buco and risotto had a chemical taste that was unpleasant, and unexpected. For a $40 plate that is a permanent menu item, I'd expect it to be perfectly ironed out. The salmon was perfectly cooked, yes, but it didn't taste particularly fresh, and the glaze was *extremely* orange-forward. The glaze also just came on the side as a sauce, it wasn't brushed heavily over the salmon and roasted on the meat to form a nice thick layer of, well, glaze, as one would expect. Again, not distinctly bad, but certainly not exceptional, and at this price point I expect greatness. The chocolate cake was excellent, however. For ~$145 after tax and tip, we got 2 glasses of wine, 2 entrees, and a dessert. Frankly, most of the other Italian restaurants in the city that weigh in around $20 an entree deliver *much* better food, and you can easily walk out for less than $90 with the same items. Bottom line, I would not return.

J
Jane Gray

Overall, I would have rated all at a 5 except for two issues. The branzino that was ordered was under seasoned to the point that the fishy taste was almost overwhelming! I thought the fish was spoiled and would have sent it back except this was a business dinner I was hosting. The second issue was that we were nicely asked to leave because there was a large party waiting for our table?¿ never have I had this happen and again was with customers which caused a truly embarrassing situation for me. Needless to say, I would question whether I would return, particularly if my business guests are involved.

C
Cody Maxwell

Nothing was necessarily bad but at this price point everything should have been better than ok. Waiter told us to wait to order appetizers at the same time as our entrees because the kitchen gets busy on Friday nights. I’ve never been told this at a restaurant and if they want to delay appetizer tickets, that’s something they should deal with in the back of house, not put on the customer. The appetizer and entree were mediocre. Dessert was good.

M
Michael J. Sammut

For the price and the plating, this restaurant is mediocre at best. The food is tasty, well some of it, I found my veal to be quite overcooked and the marsala to be verging on bitter and burned. The staff is exceptional. I think their prices would be warranted if they amped up their food game and put more care into preparation. Overall, I have to say I will not return to this restaurant. It is sad because it gets a lot of good hype, but very disappointing in the end.

S
Sandy Khaled

Sorry to disappoint but the food was not good at all. Presentation was nice but it was so, so salty! The bruschetta was sad, the martinis (melontini and pomegranate) were meh, just alright, I’m sure this place is meant to serve wine and nothing else (stick with what you know best or do better with the martinis). However service was excellent and the staff very kind.

J
Jack M

Unfortunately, this was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had at this price point in years. I usually give local businesses the benefit of the doubt, but in this case I cannot. The atmosphere was immediately off-putting: the dining room was dimmed so low it felt more like eating in a cave than in an upscale restaurant. When we went to order appetizers, we were told entrees had to be ordered at the same time or we’d face a 50 minute delay between courses. Even if it was meant as 15 minutes, it was a bizarre comment, pacing between courses should never be an issue like that. Service declined steadily after that. Urgency seemed to be the main theme: we were rushed through appetizers, then our entrees arrived quickly, with staff making an unnecessary fuss about timing. Dinner itself was mediocre at best certainly not worth $30 a head. A side of “julienne vegetables” turned out to be what looked like scraps hastily fried together. The “seasonal vegetable” required checks with the kitchen and was ultimately revealed to be sautéed spinach, a side already listed on the menu. Service execution was equally sloppy water refills were done by reaching across the entire table, something I’ve never experienced at any respectable establishment. The final straw came with the check. Our server immediately assumed one person would pay for the entire party, then dropped a bill with a glaring discrepancy: the itemized copy and the gratuity slip differed by exactly 15% or $50. For a party size that does not qualify for automatic gratuity, this looked very much like an attempt to sneak in a 15% service charge while hoping we wouldn’t notice, and then tip on top of it. Once the check hit the table, staff disappeared entirely, as if anticipating we would not catch the “error.” I really hate to make any sort of accusation like that but there was one other table in our section and the chances of their bill being 15% more on the nose are astronomical. For a restaurant positioning itself as upscale, this was a deeply disappointing experience. Between the rushed pacing, subpar food, sloppy service, and what appeared to be a dishonest handling of the bill, I cannot recommend this establishment.

T
Ting Lu

Caution, Check your balance. They may overcharge your card! We came to this restaurant for the first time. To be fair , we really like the food. Waiting time for the food is not long either, I like that as well. The service, however, is not good. Every single waitress/waiter looks pretty cold and boring. I would have give it 4 star for the food. However, when the bill came, I realized they over charged me for more than 30 dollars, out of no where. My bill is ~$90 and my card is charged for $130. Luckily we checked the bill and find out the issue. The waitress looks pretty unnatural when she said “oh, it’s a mistake. Please ignore it. ‘’ It’s very hard for us to believe that it was really a mistake. And she did’t even apologize for it. So, I don’t think we’ll go back again.
