Excellent experience from top to bottom every single time. Truly what I would consider the best restaurant in Chicago. In a city that is steak, potatoes, and beer dominant, Le Colonial is a breath of fresh air. I have been around 5 times now, for lunch as well as dinner, and every visit the service and food have been 10/10. The crunchy spring rolls are quite literally my electric chair meal. The mocktails are divine. I am vegan and they do an incredible tofu version of both curries which are heavenly. The pickled mango beet salad is very refreshing as are the fresh rolls. The service is attentive and always friendly. The atmosphere is so warm and happy, I love the decor. I do not live in Chicago but visit about 2 times a year and visiting Le Colonial is always the night I look forward to the most.
Le Colonial is hands down our favorite Chicago restaurant. The atmosphere is so unique and cozy, especially during Chicago winter. You feel like you’ve been transformed. The food is high quality ingredients, each bit is full of flavor and veggies. It’s delightful! And the service is next level. Located on Oak Street, we have started to come here for every special occasion. And now that we are celebrating more often at home with a little one, Le Colonial takeout is our favorite! SO DELICIOUS! Highly recommend the chicken curry and beef noodles. Can’t recommend Le Colonia enough.
The ambiance of the restaurant is fantastic. Each of the rooms is distinct and offers a different vibe for you to enjoy your food. I also love the homage they pay towards Vietnam’s culture in terms of art and food. The food is also fantastic. We got the yellow curry and the tofu stir fry, neither of which we could finish fully.
Le Colonial was the perfect place for our small wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception with 70 guests. Pat went above and beyond helping us choose our menu and recommending an incredible florist who fit our style perfectly. On the day itself, Pat and the team were everywhere they needed to be - making sure everything ran smoothly without us having to worry about a thing. The food, the ambiance, and the service were all exceptional. Truly - a great venue for an intimate wedding.
A wonderful dining experience from start to finish. The food, service, and atmosphere were all outstanding. The manager was extra helpful and made us feel truly special for our birthday occasion, adding an unforgettable touch to our trip to Chicago.
Every dish was very flavorful and did not disappoint! I’d recommend this place for those who are interested in trying Vietnamese dishes with a modern twist!
Excellent food & ambiance. Came in at 1pm Jan 5, waiter (tall&brunette, I forgot his name) provided excellent service and constantly checked up on us. Would go again
I visited at the invitation of my friend's mother, and the quality of the food, the harmony of the flavors, and the atmosphere were all so great that it was a great restaurant to enjoy the food. The price is a bit high, but considering the atmosphere, it seems worth it.
Our server was the best (so sorry I didn’t catch his name) and the food is fantastic. Love the ambiance, great place for lunch, dinner, or drinks.
This place was such a treat! My fiancé and I went here to celebrate our engagement and the food, service, and ambiance all exceeded our expectations.
I like this place; the elegant seating is perfect for special occasions, such as weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays. A variety of delicious starters and entrees. Great food.
What an amazing dining experience at Le Colonial. The food was utterly delicious with wonderful flavors and combinations. We had the chicken dumplings, beef ravioli, pho, filet mignon, fried rice, green beans, pineapple cake and sundae. We loved everything! Our server was Francisco and he was knowledgeable, attentive and personable. He made the dinner special. Rafael, the manager, also stopped by our table and gave us some history of the restaurant, and was simply a pleasure to speak with. This restaurant hits all of the boxes for being a top notch restaurant in a competitive dining scene. Our meal came to $230 for 4 including drinks and taxes. We felt that it was very reasonable and of the highest quality. Rafael and Francisco truly are gems at this restaurant and we would definitely recommend them for an enjoyable and outstanding dining experience.
I had a wonderful dining experience at this restaurant. The ambiance was elegant and beautifully designed, creating a very enjoyable atmosphere. The food was absolutely delicious—especially the pho.. which had a rich flavor and a generous portion of meat. The drinks were fresh.. well-balanced…very tasty. One standout item was a rolled dish I unfortunately can’t recall the name of..but it’s definitely a must-try. I highly recommend showing the staff a photo of it—you’ll be glad you ordered it. Overall, an excellent spot for both food and atmosphere. Highly recommend!
Le Colonial is hands-down one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had, not counting steakhouses, this is easily in my top 3 restaurants in Chicago. We started with the chicken soup, phenomenal flavors that left me wishing for a second bowl. The chicken fried rice, I’m still dreaming about it. Brussels sprouts, perfectly done. Garlic noodles, so good I wanted a vat of them. My lady had the curry chicken for her main dish and loved every bite. And the star of the night, the Shaking Beef, absolutely unforgettable. I even asked if the chef was still in the building so I could thank them, but sadly they had already left. If I could, I’d eat here every single day, reservations can be a little tricky to snag at times, but it’s worth every bit of effort. Highly recommend. And to the wonderful team at Le Colonial — if there’s a secret handshake that gets me a table whenever I crave Shaking Beef, just point me in the right direction.
Fantastic experience all around. Every dish we ordered was delicious, but the chicken curry was the star! They even make a Diet Coke look fancy. This was a beautiful restaurant and the service was excellent. I can’t wait to return.
Everything from food to service was 10/10. This was my first time trying Le Colonial and I have to say I’m a huge fan, definitely coming back to try some of the other dishes. Everything on the menu looked so appetizing, there wasn’t a single item I wouldn’t want to try. I got the chicken and mushroom ravioli and pork and shrimp rolls to start off. Both were amazing! I also got the shaking beef and chicken fried rice. The beef was cooked to perfection and went so well with the sauce and greens. The fried rice had a great flavour and it was a generous portion. For dessert I got the warm chocolate cake, it was so soft and moist and paired perfectly with the ice cream. I also tried their lychee cocktail and it was really good. Everything is reasonably priced. The atmosphere is really vibey, very french. Can’t wait to go back!
Everything we ordered tasted fantastic! First, we got mushrooms&chicken ravioli as a starter and it was soaked in fish sauce which we loved. For salad, we got the lotus root salad and it was beyond the expectations! Loved the dressing and the texture of lotus root was interesting. Finally, we got the shaking beef for main dish and it was such a long wait until we got the plate. It was worth the wait tho. The combination of vegetables and meat was a perfect match, making the dish even more enjoyable.
Le Colonial in Chicago gave us such a great dining experience from the start. Our server was all smiles and super attentive, which set a really positive tone. The chilled shrimp roll and pho bo were honestly some of the best I’ve ever had. The shrimp roll was packed with fresh veggies that blended perfectly for a refreshing, bright flavor. The pho bo had a beautifully balanced broth—flavorful without being overly spiced. We also tried the shaking beef, and the filet mignon was incredibly tender, with a soy-based sauce that added a nice twist. Definitely a spot I’d love to go back to!
This was my third time dining at Le Colonial and the food, service and atmosphere never disappointed me. Simply one of the best Vietnamese restaurants I’ve been to. The dishes are perfect balance of authenticity and creativity. You can’t go wrong with any of the dishes on the menu. Definitely recommend!
Excellent service ! We had our little furry friend and they gave us a nice corner table. The food was authentic and service was excellent. We ordered Pho, Thai Shrimp Curry, Stir fried chicken and upside down pineapple cake. Everything was delicious , flavor full and just the right quantity !
A beautiful place with lots of natural lighting and amazing food. The price is a bit high but it is definitely worth a stop. Some of the dishes are authentic and full of flavors. The pho soup is light and absolutely delicious. However, it is very small compare to actual Vietnamese restaurants. My all time favorite is the red snapper. It is crispy, sweet and savory all in one bite.
Took a group of six for my daughter’s birthday and we couldn’t have had a better experience. I was apprehensive at first but they won me over with each dish. We shared a few small and large plates besides a few sides. My personal favorite was the fried rice, so fresh and no grease but the Tuna was a close second. everything was awesome including the deserts. You will not be disappointed.
It’s a fine dining restaurant even lunch, make sure you dress properly. We love the decoration, vibe, food, and service. Everything is great. We like to go back for dinner. This place is always fully booked.
I reserved this place about a month in advance for my big proposal. As soon as we got in they had our spot ready for us. One of the chefs noticed that the first area we were in was a little too cramped and less intimate, I honestly think she saw that it was for my big moment when I booked the reservation so she took us to a more dim lit area where we had the luxury of sitting next to one another in a comfy seat with candles on the table. This place has a slight dress code and rightfully so, the staff was very attentive, they made sure eveytime we finished a course that we had fresh silverware and never had to ask for a refill on our beverages. The food was beyond amazing, from the drinks, to the starters to the soup all the way down to the dinner and dessert. This place made my day and my soon to be wife's day and we will definitely look forward to returning, even on a regular day this place is great and topnotch. I recommend if you like fine dining and a change of pace as far as the regular Chicago food choices, you come to this place.
I did last minute booking at this restaurant, but had great experience. Food portion overall was on the smaller side, but it sure was tasty. I really enjoyed pho and wide noodles! Atmosphere was really pretty and nice. Servers and all workers were super friendly too. Would definitely go back sometime soon.
Unique menu featuring authentic Vietnamese dishes with a French twist. Every item was delicious. Some dishes were on the saltier side but still amazing. Will definitely be back again.
Wonderful experience: when we arrived, we were promptly greeted by the hostess, she acknowledged our special occasion and the ambiance was beautiful. Our server knew the menu and ingredients in the dishes quite well and was able to make special recommendations to assist someone in our group with dietary restrictions. We especially loved the starter: chicken and mushroom "ravioli" and the main dish: curry chicken with vegetables. The wine list was outstanding. Very fair prices for the quality of food and the attention to detail by staff, as well as the beautiful location.
If you're looking for the best and most authentic Vietnamese food in Chicago, look no further than Le Colonial. This restaurant beautifully blends traditional Vietnamese flavors with a modern twist, creating a dining experience that's both unique and memorable. The ambiance is inviting, with a charming decor that transports you to Vietnam. The menu offers a variety of dishes that highlight fresh ingredients and bold flavors. From the pho to the banh mi, every dish is crafted with care and attention to detail. I highly recommend visiting Le Colonial when you're in Chicago. It’s a must-try for anyone who appreciates authentic Vietnamese cuisine. You won’t be disappointed!
Take the elevator up and you will be taken to another world. The food here was stellar and we had some of the most attentive waiters. As this is a gold coast location its very seen and not heard service (which really isn't my style as a born working class individual) but I still had some of the sweetest waiters and waitresses. Despite all that the fish was very fresh and very well done. You do pay a lot for the experience and some of the food just wasn't 10/10 more....8/10. But the presentation and space were immaculate. My heart goes out to the chef whoever you are you made me and my girlfriends late valentines day amazing!
Really good — a staple in Chicago. Better with more people because all the food is shareable
My favorite place in Chicago, I always have to go when I am there. The food is super good, especially the duck. The service is also perfect and the atmosphere super nice. Only negative thing the price
Phenomenal! The food is flavorful and drinks are unique. Try Lychee martini and Green Shrimp Curry. Perfect combo to feel like you’re in Asia 😊
Le Colonial’s happy hour is such a vibe! From the moment you step in, the elegant mix of French and Vietnamese decor sets the perfect mood. It feels warm, intimate, and just the right amount of upscale without being too formal ✨ Their Lychee Martini? Absolutely delicious! 🍸 Light, slightly sweet, and super refreshing. The cocktail list in general is well-balanced, and they do a great job with flavors. The wine selection is decent too, but I definitely lean toward their mixed drinks. Food-wise, the crispy spring rolls are a must-try! 🥢 Perfectly crunchy and packed with flavor, especially with the dipping sauce. The dumplings are tasty too, though I wish the portions were a bit bigger. Service is usually great, but when it gets busy, you might have to be a little patient. Overall, it’s a fantastic spot for happy hour—elevated but still relaxed. Definitely a place I’d keep coming back to! 🍷💛
Each dish is better than the last! Mouthwatering! Mel and the bar staff are rockstars too! Lovely ornate decor! Best lychee martini in Chicago! Other locations are not as good and reliable as Chicago!
This is our third time at Le Colonial, and they have been consistently delivering a great experience every single visit. Our favorite dishes this time were the elevated vegetable rolls, the pho, and the shaking beef — all outstanding. Service, food, and atmosphere are always on point. It’s definitely best to reserve in advance — especially for dinner — since it tends to fill up quickly.
Hands down the best lychee martinis I’ve had anywhere! Perfectly balanced, refreshing, and dangerous in the best way.🍸✨ Carlos behind the bar (with the glasses!) and JT truly made the experience unforgettable—their hospitality was next-level…Attentive and genuinely warm and welcoming, without ever feeling overbearing. The food was impressive and unbelievably fresh, with the best spring rolls and stir-fry noodles packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. The vibe is beautiful, comforting and inviting — the entire team was incredibly friendly and accommodating. This is the kind of place you come for drinks and end up staying all night. Can’t wait to come back!
Le Colonial is amazing. I appreciate the staffs and managers kindness to me even though I have autism and their food is amazing and really good. Owner Joe and GM Valerie and manager Sam is very nice. The restaurant is in good condition. Amazing Vietnamese French cuisine. Definitely come back. 10/10.
The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The ambiance of the restaurant added to the overall experience, making it a memorable evening. There was however a high level of noise and the tables were very close together which made it difficult to have a private conversation. Despite this, the overall experience was enjoyable.
Le Colonial: A perfect escape, assuming you don't mind the crushing reality of returning to your real life afterward. This Gold Coast staple nails the assignment. The atmosphere is so lush and transportive, it feels like they spent 90% of the budget on lighting and exotic plants. It was, without question, my favorite part. I'm already mentally decorating my non-existent veranda to look exactly like the second floor. The French-Vietnamese hybrid cuisine was really good—no complaints there. Specifically, their version of the Peking Duck was very well done; perfectly crispy and entirely too satisfying. But let's talk about the Garlic Noodles. These noodles are the reason I am now planning a highly inconvenient solo trip back. I would betray someone for a bowl of those noodles in an instant. They are criminally good, and I resent them for making me feel such intense, singular devotion. The service? Impeccable. They moved around the room with the silent, terrifying grace of people who are paid far too much to care that much. It made me feel simultaneously pampered and judged, which is the Gold Coast dining experience in a nutshell. Come here, get excellent food (and those noodles), and witness interior design so stunning it will actively ruin your appreciation for every other space you occupy. It’s great. Don't miss it.
🍜 La Colonial, Chicago: French-Vietnamese Fusion Oh, La Colonial! This place is where chic Chicago meets a cool blend of Parisian elegance and vibrant Hanoi. I stumbled in and immediately knew my wallet was going to be lighter, but my soul? Fully nourished. 💰 The Damage Report: Yes, it's pricey. Like, "I need to check my bank account balance after the appetizer" pricey. But honestly, the moment the plate hits the table, you realize it's an experience, not just a meal. Totally worth the splurge. 👨🍳 The Vibe & Service: They nail that perfect balance: Friendly, but incredibly respectful. The staff makes you feel like an old friend they haven't seen in a while, but they maintain that classy, polished service that makes dining out special. Top-notch! 🍲 The Food (Pho-nomenal!): I went for the pho soup. Seriously, it was a hug in a bowl! The broth was deep, complex, and just pure comfort. It was a cold night and this warmed me right up. 🍸 The Drink (French Kiss Martini): And for the drink? I tried the French Kiss Martini. Ooh la la! It was the perfect blend of sophisticated and fun—smooth, a little sassy, and dangerously easy to sip. Highly recommend you give it a smooch! The Verdict: I liked it a lot! Go for the food, stay for the drinks, and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere. If you're looking for a special night out in Chicago with killer French-Vietnamese cuisine, this is the spot. Bring a date or treat yourself! What other city or type of food should I review next? Let me know where my next travel adventure should take me!
I really enjoyed my dinner at Le Colonial Chicago; the Vietnamese flavors were fresh and well-balanced, especially the spring rolls and sea bass. The service was attentive and elegant, but I found the portions a bit smaller than expected for the price. The cozy, stylish atmosphere made the evening feel special, even though the dining room felt a little crowded
Food was good especially all the vegetables dishes that we got. Most of the dishes are on the sweeter side. One dish that is not my favorite is seafood ceviche. It’s kind of bland. The portions are small compared to the price that you pay for it. Our server was attentive.
Pretty nice spot with clean and flavorful pho. I wish the serving size was larger though, felt like an appetizer instead of a main dish. Their signature fried rice was delicious. They also have a dress code so I would wear biz casual/no flip flops. Restaurant is well decorated and service was nice too. Would revisit occasionally.
From start to finish, our experience at Le Colonial Chicago was simply delightful. The moment we stepped into the lush, palm‑filled dining room, we felt transported to a chic French‑Vietnamese escape—elegant but comfortable. We began with a beautifully balanced yellow‑coconut chicken curry and shared the “shaking beef” which was tender and full of flavor. The mains arrived beautifully presented, and each dish had that perfect balance of subtle spices and fresh herbs. The terrace overlooking Oak Street was a highlight—especially in the evening with the lights and passing city buzz. The service was polished, the staff knew the menu well and offered excellent wine and cocktail suggestions to pair. All in all, it was a perfect spot for a special evening out. The atmosphere, food, and service were all just right. Highly recommend if you’re looking for an upscale Vietnamese‑French dining experience in Chicago.
This is a restaurant specializing in Vietnamese cuisine. I was there as part of a large group with which I had been working. The place is located upstairs in a building surrounded by jewelers and other high-end boutiquea on a street in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood. The interior is tastefully atmospheric, the staff efficient, hard-working and courteous, the food —again, Vietnamese— delicious. Le Colonial would be a fine choice for lunch for the boutique crowd or a romantic dinner. I spent $0 because I was working with the group, but I estimate that the cost per person would start at between $20 and $30, tax and tip included. Fair value for money.
Sadly, Le Colonial didn’t live up to the hype. The atmosphere was lovely, but the food was just average—nothing memorable. The two of us had the Cha gio, Banh Uot, Pho Bo, and Bo Luc Lac. Portions were surprisingly small for the price, and we left still hungry after spending quite a bit. For the cost, we expected more flavor and substance. Beautiful setting, but overall a disappointing experience.
This one was a difficult one, but I think its mainly a fault of Chicago culture. We are not from Illinois, but we know immigrant influence is strong here. Don't get it twisted, this place is in a very wealthy part of town and the clientelle reflect that. The food is really no better than a hole in the wall type vietnamese restaurant, but you are paying a lot more for it here. Now the decor and ambiance are on point, as to be expect for the location, but I dont see the correlation of the french vietnamese immigrant theme to all the wealthy people sitting around being wealthy. It seems laughable if you are an outsider looking in. I came here bc I wanted to try to a "premium" restaurant for its food, but the price didnt reflect it. Moreover, the service was hit and miss. It didnt give me high end restaurant level service. Go to Boston and you will see what I mean and without spending as much. Its not worth it for a foodie to be honest.
Been wanting to come here for a long time and found it pretty underwhelming. Some dishes were amazing but I found some of them not anything special for the prices you pay. We got the ribs and the crispy pork and shrimp rolls as appetisers and those were both really good. We got the shaking beef as a main along with garlic noodles and eggplants. For those, I found that I’ve had much better at other smaller owned Vietnamese restaurants. It’s definitely a nice place to have a nicer, fancier dinner, but in terms of the food itself, I feel like for the high prices I would be able to get the same quality if not better Vietnamese food at smaller owned places around the city.
Le Colonial is a really beautiful restaurant and the atmosphere alone makes it feel like it should be a great dining experience. The beef roll appetizer genuinely exceeded my expectations. It was fresh, flavorful, and easily the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, that was not enough to make up for the garlic noodles, which were honestly one of the most disappointing dishes I’ve had in Chicago. They were severely overcooked, made with udon style noodles, and completely underwhelming in flavor. The overall menu and flavor profiles also felt more like a stylized version of “Asian food for people who don’t really eat Asian food,” rather than something that understands the historical and cultural context of Vietnamese cuisine. It’s polished, but not particularly soulful. Service was fine, but I wouldn’t rely too heavily on the server’s recommendations if you’re very familiar with authentic Asian flavors. I would absolutely skip the noodles and stick to the appetizers or salads. Overall, it’s a cute, well designed space, but the food felt more like a mediocre upscale chain than a place I’d return to.
I had a very disappointing experience at Le Colonial. From the moment we arrived, the service felt inattentive and disorganized. We waited far too long to be acknowledged, drinks took forever, and it was difficult to get anyone’s attention throughout the meal. Unfortunately, the food did not make up for it. Several dishes arrived lukewarm, lacked flavor, and did not match the quality you would expect for the price point. To make matters worse, I felt sick later that night and experienced what seemed like food poisoning after eating there. That alone makes it impossible for me to consider returning. With so many dining options in Chicago, I would strongly recommend going elsewhere.
