Thai Canteen is a local favorite in Davis, known for flavorful and well-priced Thai dishes. Many reviewers praise the yellow curry, pad thai, and the vegetarian options. Some note inconsistencies in food quality, particularly with overcooked meats and overly sweet curries.

Delicious Thai food. Everything I’ve had is good here, especially enjoyed the drunken noodles. This is straightforward, delicious and affordable.
Really great Thai food! I've eaten here twice now both for sit-down and take-away and both times the food has been excellent. Would definitely recommend.
Great and probably best option for vegetarians in Davis. I've eaten all throughout Davis as a vegetarian. Thai Canteen has a great selection of delicious vegetarian Thai dishes that makes me keep wanting to come back (I've probably eaten here like over 30 times) I've eaten here with friends and we have always said that Thai Canteen is probably the best restaurant in Davis in terms of quality selection and price. I've never had a poor experience with the food here and I've never spent more than $25 on a meal (my go to meal includes extra toppings and a Thai tea). But I find that the meals you can get here are really complete (carb, protein, veg) in comparison to other restaurants in a similar price range. And the portion size is more than reasonable and I often have enough for leftovers. Not to mention that everything tastes really fresh and that alone makes it worth the price. But what's better is that you can often get discounts according to their weekly specials. It's a great place to eat out especially with friends. I'll always be fond of Thai Canteen. If you come to Davis to study here this is one restaurant you must try.
Really great Thai food! There are so many options you can choose from and they are pretty cheap too; every dish is less then 10 dollar. Good place to eat by yourself or share with your friends. My favorite dish here is probably the Pad Thai. (You have to tell them if you want the full Thai spicy experience and they will probably add some fresh chilli into the dish to spice things up a bit.)
Quick friendly service. We got the duck fried rice , fried tofu and red curry. Duck was very flavorful and tasty. Tofu wasn’t soft like I’ve had in the past. Had a good texture, the sweet and sour sauce that came with it had a Smokey taste to it. Red curry was good. The portions are HUGE so come here hungry! You will leave happy. Only complaint would be it can get noisy in there especially with the kitchen noise.
This restaurant is a local favorite among college students for good reason. Food is flavorful, well-priced and relatively healthy. Service is quick and professional. Personal favorites: 1. yellow curry with chicken - so nutritious and soothing on a cold day. 2. pad thai with shrimp - big portion, bright fresh flavors, tasty chewy noodles Atmosphere is casual and welcoming, outdoor seating can be quite pleasant. My only gripe is the noise levels inside can get out-of-hand, sounds really just bounce around in there. If you are noise-sensitive, it may be prudent to sit outside.
Amazing food and big portions! Everything was delicious and full of flavor. Great value and great service. I’ll be returning for sure!
My friends and I had quite a winner dinner! The outdoor entry sign is kind of inconspicuous, but with google maps it's easy to spot. There is open seating; you order at the register. Most tables are for 4, but if it's not busy you can combine them for more space. I ordered the crispy pork belly, and the meat was good! The combination of sauce and rice complemented the meal nicely. But, there were too many veggies (in my opinion).
First time here at Thai Canteen and it didn’t disappoint. I ordered the Pad Thai and the Panang curry both were delicious and full of flavor. Everything tasted fresh and well balanced. I’ll definitely be coming back when I’m craving Thai food again. 9/10
One of my favorite restaurants in Davis ! I've been here numerous times and have enjoyed each and every experience from the food to the customer service to the atmosphere. I really enjoyed their khang know wan, khao soi, and pad thai ( not in the picture ). Overall, highly recommend giving it a try if you haven't already !
Easily the tastiest restaurant in Davis. Plenty of dishes can be made vegan/vegetarian by asking. Price is a bit high, but totally worth it in my opinion. The yellow curry, pineapple fried rice, and drunken noodles are my top choices.
The deals here are pretty great! When I ordered I got a free Thai tea with purchase of any curry. There is no outside food allowed but the seating everywhere is cozy. I enjoyed the food very much. I was however concerned that the pineapple rice was staining the white plate with a neon yellow. Overall, enjoyed!
Thai Canteen has been one of my favorites since I attended UC Davis over a decade ago. Their pad si ew is one of my favorites, their pad Thai isn’t pad as well as all of their other dishes and drinks! You order and can sit anywhere or take it out and service is quick. They also sell beer and have tons of drinks. I remember hosting one of my graduation dinners here and they were able to accommodate our party without having a reservation but that was years ago. This place is also open pretty late too. Parking can get busy downtown if it’s busy.
Very vibrant and their thai boat noodles is legit. Better than some I had in Bangkok myself. The staffs are very friendly. 11 out of 10 will come again.
Absolutely love this place! Especially if you are vegetarian, they are super considerate and flexible with their dishes and making them vegetarian. Service is usually pretty fast, <20min even during busy hours. Totally recommend for all!
Must be one of the best Thai dishes I had in California. I had the pad Thai and fried rice with shrimp and they both are amazing. I will be coming back for sure.
At Thai Carteen, as Africans trying out new dishes, we thoroughly enjoyed the rice but didn't have the same appreciation for the noodles. Nonetheless, we had a great overall experience, complemented by the fantastic staff. Will recommend checking out if you are in Davis.

The food here is incredible every time I come, I try to convince my cousin to come here every time I visit. This is my favorite Thai place in all of Davis. My favorite things to order here is the yellow curry, the session pumpkin curry, and the pad med mamuang.
well first this is a top-notch place to go while you charge your EV at the EVGO which is right over by the Arboretum just about three minute walk away. They have both level two and level three chargers there. Next if you have your fuzzbutt with you you can sit on the patio oit front that has a dog bowl for water and plenty of shaded seating. water is self-serve so you can go get a cup of water and fill up the water bowl that’s outside for your little schnoogins. I came here because Chatty-G. The notorious G.P.T., told me i should according to this artificial intelligence it was one of the best options for vegan food in town! Thai cuisine is my favorite so this was an easy choice. My Pad Kee Mao, a.k.a. drunken noodles came out very fast and the tofu was perfectly braised. I think I would’ve ordered it a bit spicier but I told them to go mild since they had ample condiments that fulfilled my capsaicin requirements. Note to vegans: the condiments are not all vegetarian exactly. There is one that has little sliced red peppers in it that has a fish base. All the other ones are animal free. For instance the green peppers are jalapeños and they're just in a vinegar brine. I do wish they would label the ones that have fish sauce in them, which is probably my only complaint. Anyway, The interior looked comfortable as well. you can actually order inside and they’ll deliver to you wherever you may be if you've got the number on your table. That is all the information that you require.
Great place with excellent service! The food is delicious and reasonably priced. I made a mistake when ordering during our most recent trip, and they graciously offered to prepare a new meal.
My sister and I met here for lunch and was very impressed! Food is delicious for the price , the guys serving were friendly and courteous. The shrimp appetizer was so scrumptious, the crab rice with fried pork belly was amazing and the drunket noodle dish with chicken was authentic. We will go back again! I recommend it highly! Parking is on street but available! The town is fun! A good weekend joint to visit.

Pretty solid, inexpensive Thai food. We visited on a recent Wednesday evening. There was a consistent line to place an order of 3 -5 people around dinner time. The dining room was pretty full. There are several tables as well as a long table to share opposite the front counter. Ordering is done at a counter and food brought within ten minutes. We had Pad Thai and Yellow Curry along with the fried chicken skins. Both mains were tasty but not spectacular. Definitely plentiful in portion size--the Pad Thai could easily be shared. The curry was zesty and a little thin but with lots of protein (chicken in our case.) The fried skins were yummy though got ordinary after a few. There really isn't any table service other than bringing your food. The staff was kind and unobtrusive.
You can never go wrong with Thai Canteen as a last resort when you do not know what to eat. However, I would give it a 4 star because out of all the times I’ve been here, there was greasy oiled hair in the pad Thai about 3 times now. Also lots of flies flying around :p Other than that, the food is good. Thai Canteen is also great for to go food! Call in and pick it up within 10-20 minutes :)
Thai Canteen: I ordered the pad khing ($13) and an iced Thai tea ($4) for take-out. There is ample seating indoors (including bar stools around the counter area) as well as outside in the patio area. Relaxing atmosphere and plenty of seating with large tables, great for friend/family gatherings. Staff were attentive and friendly, they recommended rice dishes and personally came outside the restaurant with my order when it was ready (it took <20 min). I chose mild as my spice level and I'm glad I did, the pad khing still had a nice kick to it but not to the point of tongue-numbness. The stir-fried chicken, mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions were a bit plain without the sauce and the ginger flavor was not as impactful as I expected. This dish is perhaps best enjoyed immediately when served, before the sauce is greedily soaked up by the rice, leaving the chicken dry. I felt the portion was a bit small for the price but noticed that it's probably due to the size of the container, where portions for dine-in seemed larger. The iced Thai tea has the usual familiar, comforting sweet taste of condensed milk and the price is about the same as elsewhere. Overall, the Thai Canteen offers dishes with great potential and is perhaps best enjoyed by dining in.
Fantastic proportions, very flavorful and Thai spice is spicy! Ordered for delivery, pad gra prow with tofu (basil tofu) and pad kee mow with beef (drunken noodles) and it was delicious. Rice fluffy and bountiful and noodles were bouncy and packed full. You can even order the spice on the side.
The panang curry was the best curry I have ever had. The curry was loaded with the right herbs. The curry was very strong, which I liked. The downside was that the chicken was overcooked. the side of white rice was cooked with too much water. The noodles were hit or miss. I have had a pad kee mao where the noodles were way too soggy and broken. Same with their fried rice.. They make their noodles and rice with way too much water. *The panang curries were taken over a year apart.
A no-frill Thai restaurant. Had to say their happy hour from 4-6pm is really worth it. $5 on all appetizers and $3 for all beer. We only stayed for a quick bite and drink before heading to airport. Taste and ingredients of the dishes were quite authentic.

We loved the food! Served really hot which we love. Staff was “meh” as far as friendliness but I’m all about the food quality as most important feature. Didn’t like the restrooms much down that hallway/corridor. Kinda had that I don’t wanna touch that without a paper towel vibe. So I’d say food was 5/5 and atmosphere/vibe/ambiance was a 3/5

We love stopping by here. The food is always very very good. We have been coming here in about 10years. Today was the first time the food was very mediocre. The flavor was not there, the potatoes in my curry were raw, the pad see yew was weirdly saucy. Not sure what happened or if they have a new chef, but hope they bring back the old taste.
Food is bussin! I came here before, but today I was so hungry and I came here at 9:40pm, and they said the kitchen is not taking anymore orders. I walked out sad. Why did they juke me? I thought kitchen would close at 10pm. That’s all. I can’t come back here for another week and a half.
Fine casual place, but their curries have been overly sweet for some reason. It's all starting to taste more like Chinese food rather than the iconic Thai flavor profile. It's missing the savory, spicy, salty, and acidic elements. Leaves much to be desired. I guess I could see why so many non-SE Asians like this place.

Kao Nar Bpet was my favorite dish in this store. However, for both my order from April and today, the duck meat was overcooked! I ordered only once after the April, due to the bad experience. But today I was thinking they may be better now, so I ordered again. However, very disappointed! Below are the pictures for both orders to prove my words. If they can’t maintain the quality of the food, like 2 of 3 orders are overcooked, they should remove this dish from their menu. Especially, for healthy, it’s not recommended to eat overcooked meat. So not only my money is wasted, but I also have to find something else for the dinner. I heard from other people that they changed their chef and also find food doesn’t taste as good as before.
Ok, to start off. The food was good, but wow the portions are astonishing. Smallest bowl of tumyum I have ever had. For nearly 10 dollars, I could think of better places to go. Overall I would come one a year, as a special occasion, definitely not becoming a regular.

I came in to have dinner here around 6:45pm on 8/26/25 with my service dog in training (she was wearing an appropriate vest). As a type 1 diabetic, she is being trained to alert to high and low blood sugars. The moment I walked up to the counter to order the lady cashiering immediately started looking my service dog and I up and down with a disgusted look. Before I could even order anything she asked me if she was a service dog which I then responded with “yes.” She then told me that I needed to sit outside because she said that the smell of dogs bothered her and she could “smell my dog.” While she said this she rudely pulled her shirt over her nose. I calmly explained to her that by law, I am allowed to sit inside with my service dog. She just kept complaining about the smell of the dog which I then just told her I was going to go somewhere else. About 10 minutes later I went back in to ask to speak with a manager. The same lady looked at me as I walked in and scoffed as I tried to politely ask her to speak to a manger. She proceeded to tell me that there was no manger on duty continuously blowing me off. Not only was she rude, and inappropriate, but she never once asked the appropriate questions that should be asked when someone has a service dog, which are as follows: “Is she a service dog?” and “What service does she perform?” The whole experience left me upset, and very uncomfortable. The discrimination I faced at this place was uncalled for and I will not be coming back here nor will I recommend this place to anyone.
Honestly, the scent that is inside this restaurant makes me gag. I don't understand why so many of my friends think that this is a tasty restaurant. Gross, oily food. Sorry for the harsh review. Not a fan. Davis has a serious lack of good Thai food, considering that Sophia's Thai is also not good at all.
Well went in after reading reviews for the first time. Poor veggie options. And ordered Tom YumnTofu soup and fried veggie rice. Taste of Tom yum: 1/10 Taste and amount of rice: no veggies and charged for tofu : 2/10 Free water: 10/10. I am.not coming again... this was not the thai Taste expected in The Downtown of Davis! Lastly the waiter couldn't even say thanks when I left ..only 2 people were dining... Also very expensive with the portion and taste.
My boyfriend ordered the crispy chicken fried rice and the dish usually does not contain peanuts which he is allergic too. He asked them twice if there were any but ended up having a reaction really bad. They did not take the situation seriously at all. They just apologized and refunded the money after the second talk with them. This is unacceptable. For those who are allergic, I don’t recommend because they simply do not care. It was not about the money, it was more about someone else having a worse reaction. They need to be more cautious.
Ordered Kang Kari with beef and mild spice. I got beef alright, but way too spicy and literally two chunks of potato and two chunks of carrots. If someone orders mild it’s because they don’t WANT spicy food- and if you advertise served with potatoes and carrots, make sure you’re providing enough to be considered a serving! So disappointed.
Want to preface this with the fact that I’ve been coming here for 2+ years and usually always enjoy the food. Today I ordered UberEats tom yum soup and when it arrived it genuinely tasted like sweet tomato water. The chicken inside is also so overcooked, rubbery, and dry I can’t even swallow it. What a waste of my money and fees. Idk if the management changed but the food is terrible. AND the portion was in the smallest takeout container possible. This is the only Google review I have ever given a restaurant because of how bad it was. I am sick and waited 50+ minutes for this soup that tastes like someone forgot to put the tom yum seasoning in. Never in my life have I wanted to cry because food was so bad but this soup made me feel that way. Go anywhere else.
I ordered online through their app on July 15( I attached the order on here). I order their Thai Fried rice that is $15 but since I wanted Calamari I paid and extra $3. I got home and saw that I got chicken instead. It’s okay I get it happens but also this is not the first time that they give me chicken instead of Calamari(as shown in the picture). This time out of the maybe three times this has happened to me I call. I call saying that I just ordered and that I’m sorry but I got chicken instead in my Thai fried rice instead of Calamari and if I can just receive credit for it. The person who answered the phone apologized and offered me a refund instead I said that’s fine too thank you! I’m eating my food and I get a notification from bank. Me thinking it’s the refund I continue eating, but then I see another notification from my bank and decide to check it. I check and see that I was instead charged $18 and then on top of that I was charged $16.56. I’m confused on what happened so I tried calling back but it was 9:16pm and I think the restaurant was no longer taking phone calls, which I understood so I said I’ll call the next day. I call the next day and I let the person who answered know that I think I was accidentally charged instead of refunded they respond with a bit of annoyance and told me to wait a few days for it to be processed I said alright. I wait a week and see that nothing has changed so I call back today July 22nd at 12:28pm and explain the situation to the person who picked up, who happened to be the same person who responded with annoyance the week before. Again they told me that it was refunded and I was letting them know that from my end the transaction of $18 that they charged me did not get refunded. The person who picked up the phone just sounded very annoyed and did not offer good service. I let them know that I was going to file a claim with my bank and which she responded with “you go do that” and hung up. I did not appreciate the service that I was provided and although I really like the food and have been coming here for a year or two and I will not come back if service stays like this. I did not think that I was being rude at all I was even apologizing that they got my order wrong… well that’s all thank you for taking the time to read this. Please do better!
