Completely in awe I’ve been coming here for a couple years now! Food is always the best quality and top notch on the taste! To top it off Peyton is one hell of a waitress and manager she’s very professional, sweet, and kind. The reason I will always keep coming back to this fantastic restaurant. Keep up the work ;)
On the way home down I45 to Groves, TX from our Durango, Co. Ski trip...googled a place to eat...pulled up several in Fairfield, Tx...Sam's Restaurant looked like it might be a fun place...had an expansive menu and a buffet. After 10 days on the road through Texas, New Mexico and Colorado...this by far was the best overall for food quality, service and price...we will definitely make it a stop on all future trips...PS their homemade bread is yummy!
Oh My Gosh Y'all!!! I'm not kidding, this is THE BEST HOME COOKED FOOD i have ever experienced in a commercial atmosphere!!! The buffet, and I don't normally like buffets, was SUPERB!!! Chicken fried steak that you can cut with a fork, fried chicken, smothered sirloin steak, bbq brisket & sausage, chicken & dumplings, mashed potatoes, broccoli rice casserole, butter beans, PLUS many more, along with a salad bar and dessert bar!!! Banana pudding, REAL BANANA Pudding, Bread pudding, peach cobbler, fresh hot bread & cornbread!!! I felt like I was at a Thanksgiving Meal!!! DELICIOUS!!! FRESH!!! CLEAN!!! FRIENDLY!!!!
The service was excellent. The bread was amazing. The salad bar was excellent. The main buffet had a lot of thanksgiving dinner items on it which would be my only complaint. I would have preferred a more traditional buffet menu but it makes sense for them to offer that at this time of year. Brisket was good. I liked the chicken fried steak of the buffet. They also had homemade style pies (coconut, chocolate, pumpkin). They were excellent.
We've been going for many years. We've also enjoyed celebrating birthdays there. Sometimes with 5-10 people, other times with quite a few more. The food is always good as is the service! They also have a small, well stocked gift shop. I've always managed to find a little gift for someone/or me there! If you've never been, go! You'll go back! (There were so many around the buffet, I forgot later to get a pic of the food... next time!)
Soooo good! We almost did not stop here because we all said we weren't quite hungry enough yet to eat the buffet but it didn't want to miss a chance at this restaurant again. Every time we're heading to Dallas our timing is just not right. After finally getting to stop and eat there my husband said from now on we're planning our trip leave times around being able to stop at this restaurant. I don't ever eat enough to justify paying for a buffet but this one was so worth it. Couldn't help eating some bread because it's so good like my grandma used to make. You know how you go to some places and the ice cream is just like frozen milk, it has no taste or flavor? That was not the case here. It actually had a really good taste. Wish we lived closer because it's so worth it!!! I think there were eight or nine stalls in the ladies bathroom which is great instead of having to wait in line because there's only 1 or 2.
Went to Sam’s a few weeks back for the first time. Very nice selection and the chocolate pie was AMAZING, 20/10 recommend the pie. The meats on the steam table were very tasty, but the sides were subpar. Still overall a very good experience. Would definitely go back. Oh, and you get a WHOLE LOAF of fresh bread which is very tasty. Update (August 2025): I am not sure about last time but when I was here this time the friend chicken was so good, some of the best I’ve bet had. The salad bar is amazing and they have a good spread. If you like a good salad bar go here. The deserts were okay but the lemon pie was very good. The price for the buffet was $19.95.
This is one of those places that you must make a stop at, at least once if you are in Fairfield. We decided to do the breakfast buffet. They have plenty of fruit to start your meal with. The breakfast buffet consists of scrambled eggs, grits, breakfast potatoes, ham, bacon, sausage, chicken fried steak, pancakes, muffins and probably more that I didn't see. You don't leave hungry! They also have a store located as you enter the restaurant.
Great spot to stop and charge car and grab food. There are electrify America hyper fast charging stations available in the lot. The food was great and while I wasn't hungry enough for the buffet it looked good. The bbq beef sandwich and onion rings were great and very big portions for the prices. Service was friendly and quick as well.
Sam's Original Restaurant is the hidden gem every Texan wants to find! My friend Jeff recommended Sam's as we were driving back from a road trip to an A&M game. Little did I know I would have one of the best American buffets in Texas! The food was wonderfully made, delicious to the bone, and packed with flavor. The salad bar was freshly prepared; I loved how they also served fresh fruit to go along with it! The service was a prime example of Southern hospitality - every single waitress so kind and greeted us with a gentle demeanor. The desserts you were definitely the best part of the buffet. There was a variety of pies, peach cobbler, and ice cream. My personal favorite was the Coconut Crean Pie - it was astronomically delicious 😋 Sam's was a wonderful conclusion to our trip! I recommend everyone traveling along I-45 to try it at least once in their lifetimes!
This place is in the middle of nowhere and couldn’t get any closer to the freeway without having striped lines on it, but they were packed with customers. The speciality is the buffet. They had something for everyone. I opted out because it was too much temptation. The chicken sandwich I had was excellent. As were the fried okra and black eyed peas. Our server was helpful and kept our drinks topped off. She had warm bread and butter to our table before we even finished sitting down. The bread is fantastic. They also have a cute little gift shop. Definitely worth the stop.
If you’re looking for a spot to go while you charge your EV, this place is the perfect spot! We had very tasty chicken fried steak with sweet tea and many pies to choose from. The dining area is modest, but it’s usually vibrant because of the buzz of the people. Clean bathrooms and a gift shop to hang out in if you’re not looking to eat. Really kind staff, really great home cookin. And the chargers were great! 218 kWh. Can’t recommend this place enough!

I travel a lot for work all over the country and love a good BBQ place, put all you can eat next to that and I am a happy guy. We asked some locals where to go for dinner and suggested Sam’s. The buffet was well stocked and had a really large selection. They offered soup and salad bar with fresh veggies and homemade style soups. The main buffet had so many options and I love a good brisket which was a little on the dry side but when it’s at a buffet sitting under a heat lamp you really can’t complain, they also offered catfish, fried shrimp, fried chicken with a variety of sides. I would definitely stop back in when back in town.
Nice place to eat that we found by accident. My spouse like to eat at a buffet, I would prefer menu items freshly cooked. This place offers both. This isn't the place to eat if you have dietary restrictions; it is definitely for meat eaters. However, I had a baked potato, our guests had pineapple chicken, and my spouse utilized the buffet only. Everyone left satiated. Our waitress was very nice, along with other staff. This is a nice family eatery. There's also a gift store.
Its the yummy cliché of taste good, feel good, get in my tummy comfort food. Chicken and dumplings, Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, fried chicken, brisket, pies, bread. Not keto friendly. Clean bathrooms, private stalls, and a gift store. Easy access to highway. Perfect stop while traveling between dfw and houston.Houston. $64 for 2 beers a Margarida and 3 buffets
I used to really like Sam's but it has gone way downhill. They need to change the grease or something the chicken fried steak was off. Most of the other stuff seemed straight out of a can.

I have seen this place many times driving between Dallas and Houston. It sits just off 45 in Fairfield. Big red Sam’s sign has been around for ever. Old school buffet place with a little shop when you first walk in. I was there for breakfast and chose the buffet. They do have some menu items as well. It was standard breakfast buffet items such as eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, pancakes, muffins etc. There were no fruit options or waffles. All the food was hot, but it was just very average. The place is large so they must get some crowds for lunch/dinner buffet which I think they are more known for as well as pies. I have no need to try the breakfast buffet again. Perhaps the lunch/dinner one day.
We drove 1hr 20min to this restaurant based on the comments of a friend that lives in Mexia. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME!!!! The food was just okay. Nothing special to write home about. If you’re driving from Waco through Mexia to Franklin, don’t go all the way to Franklin to go to Sam’s. You will be sorely disappointed. Just stop at the Farm House in Mexia. Now that place has EXCELLENT FOOD!!! Sam’s is sorely lacking. It may have been good years ago and still running off its reputation. The food was just average. Although, I do have to say I did really like the fresh bread that was brought to the table and the salad bar. The salad bar had a decent amount of different selections, not all of it fresh, but enough to make a really nice fresh salad. I also like the potato soup. A very nice can selection. The rest was just average or below average. The greens were a disgusting can selection of greens. That should be removed from the buffet. Also the desserts were atrocious!!! Anyway, if you live in Franklin you may have no other choice. If you don’t live there, don’t drive there for this restaurant. Very disappointing.
Have stopped here for many years to take home bbq on my way back from Dallas. It was always the best and worth the trip to the other side of I-45. Stopped last night around 6:30 for first time in probably a year. In my opinion, it is not what it used to be. Brisket was dry and it and the ribs and the smoked turkey were just bleh. I have never ordered smoked turkey from Sam's before but got some last night. It was sliced like super thin deli lunch meat. This was strange to me as we get nice thick slices from Rudy's. Bathroom floor was so sticky I had to wipe the soles of my shoes off with wet paper towels on my way out the bathroom door. Yuck. Guess I just saved 30 minutes on my trips from Dallas to Houston!
Food was cold. Waitress never came back when we complained the manager didn't even have the decency to come out just gave tiny discount. Then they wanted to charge 3% fee on debit card!
We traveled far to eat here just to be greeted by three roaches on the buffet. I have pictures but it's not letting me post them. The wait staff was friendly when we reported it and they did acknowledge that they knew about the situation and say they got it treated yesterday but in that case they probably should have been closed until the problem was under control. We left instantly. The lady that was going to be our waitress was very sweet.
Used to be one of the best places around. Took my kids there today. Everything was cold. I tried 5 different meats and they were all terrible. We left hungry. After paying 153$. And went to McDonald’s. Will never go back after 20$ a person for cold bland food. Someone call bar rescue or Gordon Ramsey.
