I saw a random Facebook video or TikTok or something, I don't remember. I was just doomscrolling. Anyway, saw someone eating here taking about the margaritas and birria tacos and decided to drive down and give it a shot. Really great food and the prices were about as good as you can hope for in 2026. The salsa is really spicy, and that's exactly what my heart wants in a place like this. Also tried the queso and some enchiladas with rice. Everything was fantastic. I'll definitely be back.
My mother in law had been here wanted us to try it. It was wonderful. The staff, the food, it had it all. Priced reasonable. Would very much recommend. 5 stars easy
I dined there last night. If I could, I'd spoil myself again tonight, in the caring service of LA Carreta. The portions were perfect! The price was perfect, matching the portion size. The staff was perfect: attentive, friendly, made me smile and feel at home, from the moment I walked in to the moment I waddled out. The food was prepared and cooked right there in their kitchen. You don't *eat* there, you *dine* there. But that's not the kicker! Id love to tell you about "the kicker," but I'd be giving away a secret. Let me just say that they *listen. The kitchen is *not* a machine, *not* an extension of "the factory.* It's where they make their food, where they make friends - like me.
This is our favorite! We keep coming back for great margaritas and the best queso around! There’s a big menu with lots of options, including vegetarian options, and the soups and carnitas are phenomenal. We’re here almost every week!
Great food and service. After trying the chips and salsa couldn't wait to try the food. Was very happy with the taste and portion size will definitely go back to try some of the other entrees
I don't know what's going on but there's just too many flies. It's not good. The food was ok but expensive now even more. What's worse is that the prices when up which we understand but they don't serve enough so price up less food. They should really take care of the flies. Health department should really pay them a visit.
Food was excellent and prices were great. The hotsauce was also very good!
Great food, pleasant service! My wife and I love coming here and we'll be back again soon.
Now listen here, if you’re lookin’ for real-deal, no-joke, grandma-approved Mexican food, La Carrenta is where it’s at. Soon as we walked in, I knew we were in for somethin’ special. There was Mexican on the walls, Mexican on the ceilings, Mexicans everywhere—I looked over at my two brothers and said, “Boys… this is gonna be a good one.” We rolled in on a Tuesday—Taco Tuesday to be exact—and let me tell you, the air smelled like cumin, glory, and a little bit of lime. We ordered the chicken flautas and the beef flautas, and them chips and salsa? Good night. I don’t know what they put in that salsa, but it was scrumptious. Like, “put it in a bottle and sell it at Buc-ee’s” scrumptious. Super fire. Absolutely goated. Then came dessert. Now I don’t normally get excited about dessert unless it’s deep fried or homemade by someone named Nana. But buddy, the fried apple pie here? Possibly the best Mexican dessert I’ve ever laid tastebuds on. I almost shed a tear. The fried cheesecake was good too, don’t get me wrong, but when my brother took a bite of that apple pie, he looked up at the ceiling and said, “I love it.” Like it had just proposed to him. Now, was it a little expensive? Yeah. I think we spent about 60 bucks for the three of us, and the portions weren’t huge, but everything we ate tasted like it had been blessed by a tortilla angel. And y’all—I ain’t no salad guy. I don’t trust leafy things. But their salad with the fried rice? Lawd have mercy. That rice was so good it made Jalapeño Tree's rice taste like it came from the microwave section at Dollar General. Sweet tea? Pretty stinkin’ good. Service? They were polite, fast, and didn’t judge us when we ordered seconds on the fried pie. Place was quiet too—even on Taco Tuesday. Which is perfect for guys like us who like to hear ourselves argue about flautas. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. 10/10. Five sombreros. This place is the real enchilada. 🌮🔥
My daughter and I have started going here atleast once a week, in the last two months,we met the sweetest waitress and try to get her section, her name is Savannah. The other waiters and waitress are great as well. The food has been great.
Great find! There’s limited choices in Gilmer so I’m so happy we got the chance to try this place today. The service was absolutely wonderful, our waitress was the sweetest. The prices are great and they have a really good bar selection. We will definitely be back.
Always amazing food. Great service. My wife and I try to go weekly. A nice family ran business! They recently did some updates to the dining booths and decor and it's great!
The burrito challenge was a pleasure to under take. They were very accommodating of a group of 20 with 8 people doing the challenge burrito. The challenge burrito is absolutely massive. It is the size of a small child and weighs in excess of 8 lbs as served. The flavor was awesome the steak fajita meat was perfectly cook. The jalapenos in the burrito were great drinks were served quickly and refills plentiful. I will definitely be back if I am ever in the area.
Good food & value, but - Some things to note that need some .. attention. There is a table placard listing all kinds of drinks with a happy hour banner, but when we asked about it, none of those are happy hour. Apparently according to our server, the only happy hour offering is a large draft beer? 🤔 We ordered enchiladas and they only came with rice. Asked about the beans and was told it doesn’t come with beans 🤔 also there are daily specials on Facebook only - but not on the menu, or an insert, or mentioned by a server, or even a sign at the entrance 🤔 all bizarre!
Wanted to take my wife somewhere different for Mother's Day. We drove from Mount Pleasant to Gilmer to try this somewhat new local eatery. We were quickly seated at 1pm on Mother's Day and promptly brought us chips and salsa. That is about the extent of where the nice things end. The menu was HUGE. There are so many things to choose from. I went with the Carne asade plate. My wife went with the flautas. We order the kids the 5 enchilada Platter. My Carne asada was TOUGH so hard to cut through with their dull steak knifes, I resorted to being primitive and eating with my hands and teeth. It was pretty awful. My wife's flautas were tiny and HOLLOW. Very little meat. Rice and beans were bland and quite plain. The kids' enchiladas were basically raw tortillas with the different sauces and meats. They ate them but really didn't know better. I do not recommend it until they fix many things.
The quality of the food has really gone downhill lately. This used to be my favorite place to eat Mexican food in the are.
Worst Mexican food in a 40 mile radius. Steak over done and no flavor. Chicken over done and no flavor. Flautas over cooked and again chicken was flavorless. Salsa not good. The only thing this place does well is queso.
Service great with our waiter the cook got my husband food in 15 minutes I waited 45 for mine. Never got our dessert paid for it never got it . Complained to the cashier she said they were busy we got there only four tables were busy bad management on their part will not be back . Be careful when you go there they do not care about their patrons or employees. Sorry that that is how I feel.
