Delicious food, the seasoning is very well done and the meats are cooked well. Some of the sides were burnt and underdone due to too hot oil, but everything tasted great so can’t complain too much. The Hog Fire sauce isn’t particularly spicy which would be my only complaint. Flavors are king here, I highly recommend!
Hands down the best part about getting the train to Gordonsville is being able to stop at this restaurant thats right off the mainline. The food is always fresh and delicious. The staff is phenomenal. We gotta eat on the train too, and BBQ Exchange is the best place for us to stop.
UPDATE: Now 5 stars! Been back several times and it has been consistently excellent! Thank you Chef Craig! ----- Has been hit or miss for the past few months. Our first time eating here was a few years ago and it was fantastic. Now we're hitting it a little bit more frequently. The first couple of times recently the food was cold with small portions. It improved somewhat the next time. This last time was incredible. Food was hot, portions were large, and ... the owner was present. I'm guessing the owner read some of the recent reviews and decided they need to take a more active role - at least that's what I'm hoping. Yes it is expensive. But if the food is consistently great, it's worth it. I will be eating here fairly frequently over the next several months. We will see where it goes. If it is consistently good, I will update the review with five stars, or possibly lower it - depending. P.S. - I do think the bbq could use more natural smoke flavor.
Barbecue Exchange is hands-down the best barbecue I have ever had in my life no exaggeration!! I’ve been ordering from here almost every single day for the past two weeks and not once has the food been different. The consistency alone is unbelievable. Every order is fresh perfectly seasoned and cooked with obvious care. Restaurants like this are rare and they deserve every bit of success that comes their way. The ribs are absolute perfection tender smoky beautifully seasoned and cooked just right every single time. And the barbecue sauces are unmatched. The Virginia BBQ sauce is my favorite the Carolina sauce is a close second and mixing the two is next level. I have never tasted anything like it. I’ve been ordering through Uber Eats and even the packaging shows how much pride they take in their food. Everything arrives hot neat and handled with care. Now let’s talk sides because WOW!! **The mac and cheese is the best I’ve ever had from any restaurant. It’s not dry not mushy just creamy rich and absolutely perfect. I’m extremely picky about mac and cheese and even pride myself on making great mac and cheese and they have this down pat. **The potato salad is out of this world. I’m very cautious about potato salad from restaurants but this is clearly made fresh daily. It’s creamy perfectly seasoned with tender potatoes and just the right amount of texture. **The collard greens are seasoned beautifully and melt in your mouth. **And please get the cornbread. I’ve never seen cornbread like this fluffy yet dense tall like a soufflé not cake like just absolute perfection. Easily the best cornbread I’ve ever had. ***You also must try the half chicken. It is the best smoked chicken I’ve ever eaten in my life juicy flavorful and seasoned to perfection. I’m genuinely in disbelief every time I eat it. I haven’t even visited in person yet but I absolutely will just so I can tell the staff face to face how incredible their food is. I just moved to the area and this is officially my favorite restaurant!! Hands down this is the best barbecue spot in the world!! The quality, seasoning, consistency, packaging and love put into every meal are unmatched. Kudos to the owner and staff you are doing something truly special!! If you do nothing else eat here. You will not regret it.
Excellent on all counts. Sorry Mom but they made the best collard greens l’ve ever eaten. In fact everything thing Barbq Mac & Cheese, Potato Salad, Cornbread exceptional
First visit and definitely not the last. The customer service was fabulous & the food was absolutely amazing! Best BBQ sandwich & the hush puppies were on point! Great variety of sauces. Highly recommend!!
We stopped randomly on the way back home from vacation we walked in it was very quiet but super clean nice atmosphere, the lady behind the counter was really sweet ! The hospitality was immaculate and they were soo generous! If you’re in the area don’t hesitate to try it ! Food was amazing
My favorite place ever in Gordonsville, i spent a lot of time there, all the food is amazing, the brisket is good, pork belly is the best one ever, and the pork ribs with a real tasty, i could eat there every single day, for sides i like the macaroni salad and potato salad, the sauce colonel bacon is unbeatable
I wish this place was closer to where I live. Everything looked and smelled delicious but I only had the sliced brisket, collard greens and broccoli salad. Brisket- well-smoked, tender, moist, delicious. Collards- perfectly cooked, kind of mild, delicious with a squirt of the Carolina vinegar on them. Broccoli salad- below average, oh well. Love the beautiful wood throughout the dining areas. Had a Stewart's cream soda which was awesome. Great service. I live about 1.5 hours away but I'll go back to try some more of their dishes. Most highly recommended.
Large Menu and very popular place! Even we had heard of BBQ Exchange via word-of-mouth from a neighboring city, and here we are! The line was out the door when we arrived and continued to be that way when we ate, but the employees keep a steady, reliable pace. The food was WORTH THE WAIT omg, seriously delicious, and there's a selection of BBQ sauce at every table for you to experiment with. The tables are also covered with white paper accompanied by a small tin of crayons.

I have nothing but good words for this place! The food was great, the staff was humble and friendly and the atmosphere was delightful!
The food was delicious. The staff was friendly. The atmosphere was casual and family friendly.
Well-reviewed local barbecue. Great menu lots of options sandwiches and platters. Meats were well-cooked good variety of sauces. Side dishes are stellar you can tell they were fresh cooked and well prepared. Certainly one of the best barbecue joints in this part of the state. Staff were helpful while we sorted out the menu options very funny very kind. They may be a little busy but it's worth the wait.
This place is definitely worth giving a shot. Cool bbq joint with a great feel and lots of outdoor seating. Being my first time I wanted to try as much as I could so I got the $25 3 meats and two sides Got a cookie and soda which was another $7. They definitely have something going here. I tried the sliced brisket, pork belly, and ribs. Cole slaw and potato salad. Definitely will not be retrying the sides. They had a spicy cole slaw that I should have tried. Next time. All the meats were unsauced with dry rub. Plenty of good sauces to select from. ALL were cooked great with a perfect amount of smoke. If you prefer the pull of the bone ribs these aren't those. Pullbout clean as a whistle and are SUPER tender. The pork belly was good. The star of the show was the brisket. The absolute best cooked brisket since Texas. Fall apart tender but holds its shape. Insanely juicy. The only "note" I would have is on their meats they are pretty heavy handed with the salt. Sides.. they could use a little more. The staff also couldn't have been nicer. I will definitely going back for them to get that last star.
Food was good, but overpriced for the portions we got. The pulled pork and pulled chicken were delicious. So was the green beans which were cooked in this amazing tomato sauce. SO GOOD! There is a sauce called Colonel Bacon which goes good with pulled chicken and fries! The desserts were huge, delicious and the best deal there! Recommend going.

Didn't like it. I tried the Ribs (They appeared to have been boiled first and very bland). The Potato Salad was (Speechless). If you ever had real pulled pork, trust me, don't order it there.

Love the smell when you walk in, you know it is going to be good. We tried the brisket and pulled pork, both were flavorful and tender. The collard green and corn bread were delicious.

Small off street parking area. Flavorful pulled pork! Garlic pickles! What's not to like?
Way to expensive for average bbq. A relatively small bun bbq sandwich is $11. A BLT was $15 I would not plan to return
They were ok. The food was very over priced. I ended up paying for an eight bone ribs. That cost me over $ 30 there wasn't enough meat to feed two people. They cut the bones so you only get the center part of the ribs. They offered sides but they were not worth the price either they dont fill up the small cups you get. The ribs were tasty the firist time but the second time they weren"t that tender. Honestly I wouldn't have returned but they were the only place I could go as we didn't have a car and I needed to grab something to bring home. But I would avoid this place if your on a budget. They wanted $17 bucks for pork belly which is about five pieces which wasn't sliced thick sliced. It was too much money, highway robbery. Just because they could doesn't make it right. I was told the owner raised the prices again. I get that its a small town so you can get away with high prices. But the prices and the amount you get is insane. Avoid this place if possiable. I can get a whole slab and a few extra 4 pieces with a ton of homemade fries for what I paid at the "bone yeard" at home. I hope the owner sees this and makes proper adjustments.
Great customer service. Sadly our experience ( spending well over $100 ) was not very good. All of the staff was very pleasant and professional. The ribs very very dry like leather. Baked beans unfortunately dry as well and slaw wasn't sweet at all. This was our first time here and if you eat here I would say the brisket and and pulled pork are your best options. I unfortunately can't recommend.

Sunday Jan. 18th First timers - put in a carry out order for brisket and a variety of sides to sample. Overall very disappointed. No smoke ring and the fat back hadn't fully melted away. No smoke flavor... not juicy, not much flavor at all and it was chewy. We had to cut it with a knife. It seemed like it had just been cooked in an oven. Plus the sides were bland. The only thing that was good were the sauces we tried. Spent over $70 for food and tip. This was supposed to be one of the best BBQ in the state. Maybe it was at one time, but not anymore. :( We have leftovers and we don't really want to eat it. We won't be going back again.
$12 for this sandwich. Just the sandwich, no sides, no drink. Twelve dollars. Added a quarter for scale. Look at it. To call it underwhelming would be an understatement. I’m not a cheapskate and have no problem paying $12+ for a sandwich, but I expect more than something McGriddle sized. And I had to wait about 10-15 minutes for it after I placed my order! I’d been here a few times over the years and thought it was a tad pricey but decent but this was my first visit in a while and definitely my last.
