I’m no stranger to food steeped in history and soul, places that don’t just serve you dinner but transport you somewhere else entirely. At Le Colonial, that journey begins the moment you step off the sidewalk and into a dining room that feels like Saigon as dreamed by a French novelist: graceful, warm, and just a touch impatient for you to relax and let go. From the first bite, it’s clear this is not your run-of-the-mill pho shop or barbecue joint. The kitchen here moves with purpose and precision. Dishes arrive served at just the right temperature, a deceptively simple detail that many restaurants still get wrong, but here, it matters; it tells you they care. The flavors are layered, balanced, evocative: bright citrus, herbaceous mint and cilantro, tempered heat, and that ineffable hint of nostalgia that good Vietnamese cuisine carries when done right. The decor is a story in itself: French Colonial elegance with an old-world tropical twist. Wicker, greenery, soft lighting, and high ceilings make the space feel at once luxurious and welcoming, like drinking a well-made martini on the veranda of some long-forgotten Indochinese villa. It’s a setting designed for lingering, for conversation, and yes, for cocktails. On that note: the bar is no afterthought. Order two well-crafted drinks here and you’ll feel it; not because they’re overproof, but because they’re good. A third might find you reevaluating your life choices at the valet stand. The menu thoughtfully bridges French technique and Vietnamese soul from crisp, satisfying small plates that set the tone to mains that sing with depth and grace. Whether you’re on a date night or entertaining clients over business lunch, this is a place that respects the moment. The pace of service finds that sweet spot between relaxed and professional, giving you space without ever letting the table grow cold. Sure, you can go to Houston’s International District or the Alief/Bellaire corridors and find some truly excellent Vietnamese classics for less. But what Le Colonial offers is something elevated: it’s not just food, it’s an experience: a well-designed, beautifully executed one. It doesn’t replace a bowl of pho at a tucked-away neighborhood haunt any more than a Bordeaux replaces an everyday table wine Both have their place, and both deserve respect. Will it be your everyday carry-out spot? Probably not. But as a destination, a place to remember and return to, Le Colonial earns its stars. Elegant, thoughtful, and unapologetically joyous in its celebration of flavor and hospitality, this is a Houston restaurant that doesn’t just serve great food, it invites you to savor life a little slower.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience, though I left feeling like I need a second visit to fully form my opinion. Food: We ordered the papaya salad, red snapper, sea bass, fried rice, and the mixed seafood in the bouillabaisse. The papaya salad was bright and refreshing — a great way to start the meal. Both the red snapper and sea bass were well prepared and flavorful, with the sea bass being the standout for me in terms of texture and richness. The seafood bouillabaisse was generous and satisfying. The only miss for me was the fried rice. It included sausage and possibly chicken — which I didn’t realize beforehand. I personally prefer fried rice with just egg and vegetables, so that one was more of a preference issue than a quality issue (and I’ll take responsibility for not ordering or reading the menu 😅). Service: Our waiter and the manager were both polished and professional. However, the front-of-house experience felt noticeably less warm. It wasn’t unkind, but it didn’t match the level of hospitality I expect at this price point. Ambiance: The space is beautiful — elegant décor, thoughtfully designed, and very much in line with the River Oaks setting. That said, it leans more formal than casual. I was dressed down and definitely felt it. It carries a refined, upscale energy that may feel a bit intimidating if you’re not dressed for the occasion. But one thing I strongly believe in is being yourself so do what feels right for you! 😅 $$: At around $75 per person, this is firmly in the upscale category. The pricing aligns with the River Oaks location and elevated Vietnamese concept, though I’d want a slightly more seamless front-of-house experience to feel it fully justified. I’ll likely return to try a few more dishes before making a final call. Apologies, my pictures were weak. I was really tired 🫣
We came in right before dinner for cocktails and stayed for dinner. We had first pick of the balcony seats and Ashely was so sweet to let us move seats due to our large order. The bartender was so funny. The lychee martini truly was delicious. We had the sommelier pick us a a delicious resiling. The view for dinner was almost as delicious as the ginger clay pot chicken. Additionally the r taste the papaya salad, beef pho, chicken fried rice, and beef stir fry. What a beautiful 3 yeah anniversary.
Le Colonial Houston delivers a fantastic French–Vietnamese fusion experience. Every dish was bursting with flavor, and nothing felt mediocre or forgettable. Standouts for us were the crispy shrimp and pork rolls, the seafood ceviche, and the shaking beef. If I had to nitpick, I’d say a few dishes could use a bit more protein. Service was excellent, with our server offering thoughtful recommendations throughout the meal, and the lush, plant-filled interior really tied the whole experience together.
Great experience at Le Colonial! My husband and I visited a few times while living in Houston for special occasions. We love the atmosphere and the food is delicious! On our last visit, we brought our 3 month old. We initially sat inside but it was too loud for our baby. Our waiter, Fabian, moved everything outside for us and made sure we had everything we needed. At the end of dinner, my husband ordered coffee and the cup broke while he was stirring. Fabian was the best-- got him a new coffee and covered dessert for us. Fabian was cheerful and attentive throughout dinner, helped us when we needed it, and gave us enough space to enjoy a special dinner. Thank you for making our last dinner in Houston a great memory!
Went for a friend’s birthday and had a great experience. The staff was attentive and accommodating, especially for the two vegans in our group. While the drinks were a bit sweeter than my preference, they were still enjoyable. Prices are on the higher side, so keep that in mind. Don’t miss the upstairs bar—it’s a whole vibe at night!
I had a wonderful dinner with my family at this restaurant. The food was truly authentic Vietnamese – rich in flavor and tradition. What stood out to me was how thoughtfully the dishes were served in generous portions, perfect for sharing, just like how it’s done in Vietnam. The service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Every detail showed that they truly care about the customer experience. Everything was simply perfect!
4.5 stars because the overcooked chicken in the curry detracted a bit from the overall dish but rounding up because we had a great time. For starters, got garlic noodles and pork ribs. Both were packed with flavor. For mains, we got the sea bass and chicken curry. The sea bass and all the smaller components like the noodles were delicious. Dessert was creme brulee and apple tartin, and they were both fabulous! Kylie was a fantastic server as well. Would love to come back to try other items
Located in an upscale shopping area, free parking in the garage, recommended Dress Code: “We politely request smart, sophisticated and elegant attire. Athletic wear, hoodies, and baseball hats are not permitted. This is not applicable to the patio.” We were here for a birthday celebration, delicate Vietnamese dishes, friendly service. I love their desserts.
The foods and service were amazing. The host wasnt welcoming when we came in tho, she didnt say thank you or goodbye even we did say to her when leaving. However, I still put 5 stars because the servers and the foods are just exceptional and simply amazing, very attentive and helpful servers. Overall, I will come back!!
Elegant, classy spot in the River Oaks District. This place has been around for decades - a French-Vietnamese culinary experience. The vibe is so well done - between the main dining hall and the upstairs lounge area and the wicker forward patio spaces. The food was all very yummy - loved the beef and the garlic noodle dishes the most.
Had a wonderful experience at Le Colonial Houston. I was a bit worried because several reviews lately did not give great reviews for the service, but we had a wonderful time. We did have a 9 pm reservation on a Thursday. So felt like we were the only ones there and the staff seemed super attentive to us. First of all, we were there about an hour early and went up to the lounge and had some amazing cocktails by the bartender/mixologist who knew what she was doing. There was also a great lounge vocalist that were crooning jazzy tunes that added to the mood. Next, we went down to our table when it was ready and ordered a feast. The crispy red snapper (ca chien saigon), garlic noodles and the beet salad (goi cu cai do) were superb. The way southeast asian cuisine prep and cooks fish has been lately astounding me in the most pleasurable way, and Le Colonial did not disappoint. It was $100 for the whole fish and was shared by the 5 of us. We also got the ginger glazed chicken claypot (ga xao gong) and 2 orders of garlic noodles that we polished. Also, the hanoi beef noodle (pho bo) soup and the spicy chicken soup (sup ca cai) were very enjoyable as well. Moreover, they had a decent wine list and we definitely went through 2 bottles of some chenin blancs! It was a birthday, so we enjoyed the coconut pineapple upside down cake and the vanilla creme brulee, and we barely had room for dessert!
It was a great restaurant located in a street side along luxury shopping arena. Parking was available in a parking lot situated right there. We reserved a table outside. The tables were beautifully decorated. It felt like a restaurant in Paris. The was light music playing in the background. We got few mocktails and had dumplings as a starter. The dumplings were scrumptious. We had a fried rice, green curry and chicken glazed with garlic and peanuts. The food was delicious. For desert, it was warm chocolate cake which was lovely. The service was great as well. All in all, great experience.
Second visit to this gorgeous restaurant with delicious food and truly crafty cocktails. It was my birthday and we were looking for a more upbeat vibe so this time we chose to eat upstairs in the bar area. We scheduled early (6:30) thinking it wouldn't be too loud, unfortunately, we ended up being seated directly in front of the very talented piano player/singer and her speaker. While she had a lovely voice and chose great songs, it was pretty difficult to have a conversation amongst ourselves during her performance. Never-the-less, we had a great time and great food/drinks and we will definitely go back.
We had a really good meal here. We really liked the vibe inside and the live music upstairs was a nice touch. The food came out so quickly! I’d suggest you valet or park in the ramp. It’s very close to the ramp and we didn’t have to pay for parking which was nice. FYI they do have a dress code, so check online prior to dining.
Ate here for lunch on a Sunday, restaurant itself was very beautiful and had a nice atmosphere. Service was nice at all. However, food-wise it was quite average. We tried the chicken dumplings, pho, and pork ribs, all were mediocre. Would not recommend coming here if looking for pho. Portions were smaller, but still comparable to the price. Overall nice dining experience, but there was nothing memorable or special.
We had a beautiful time at Le Colonial. Although it took a bit to get seated, the wait wasn’t too bad with great company. Our waitress and the servers treated us exceptionally well, and they will be the reason I return. Most of the food was delicious, though the rice was too dry to enjoy. Despite that, I had a lovely evening.
We visited Le Colonial on Valentine’s Day with reservations and high expectations, but the evening felt uneven. We were initially seated in a less desirable area and later moved, then informed that only a preset menu was available, which was disappointing for a first visit. The sea bass was excellent and the oysters were a highlight, though it was surprising that we could not order additional oysters, even when a neighboring table asked as well. Service felt rushed and required repeated requests for small items, and the dessert presentation took place slightly behind us, making it difficult for everyone at the table to fully enjoy it. An automatic 20 percent gratuity was added for our party of two. While we absolutely believe in tipping, the service did not reflect that level. The manager was pleasant, listened attentively, and adjusted it, which we appreciated. However, when the corrected receipt was returned, it was placed down in a noticeably irritated manner by our waiter. The most disappointing part of the evening came at the end. Standing in the rain waiting for valet assistance, I could not help but feel overlooked and unwelcome, as if my presence and my patronage carried less value. I had to request the umbrella as others did not need to ask. In a space where hospitality should feel effortless and inclusive, leaving without even the basic courtesy of an umbrella left a lasting impression that no guest should walk away with.
We went for the Valentine’s Day prix fixe menu and it was extremely underwhelming and disappointing. The table we had was wobbly and the food was very lackluster. The service and dessert were the only good part of the night. Do not recommend this restaurant. If I could , I would definitely would have liked a refund . Not worth spending $300 for forgettable food.
The server spilled my Coke, and some of it splashed on me. 🥤😡 To make matters worse, there was a large roach right next to my table. 🪳 I reported both issues to management. The manager offered to pay for my cleaning bill, but only after I had my dress cleaned. He then asked if there was anything else he could do. I requested that my meal be covered, but he shook his head no and said he would only remove the drinks from the bill. 😫 The customer service was horrible. I was extremely disappointed with the lack of accountability. He even excused the roach by saying it was because we were seated on the outdoor patio. The worst part was that he didn’t properly remove the roach—he simply kicked it out of the way, and it remained visible. 🤦🏽♀️ Overall, this was a very disappointing and unprofessional experience.
We are regular customers and have always enjoyed dining here, which makes this experience even more disappointing. We came for the Valentine’s pre-fixe menu and unfortunately felt it was not worth the price at all. With surcharge and service charges included, our total came out to about $400.We understand and fully accept the service charge — that part is completely fair. However, the additional surcharge felt unclear and unnecessary, especially given the overall value of the meal. For $125 per person, we expected a much more refined and memorable menu. The appetizers were very small and lacked the depth of flavor we normally get from the regular menu. The main courses felt rushed and underwhelming — the portions were modest and the preparation didn’t feel special or elevated for a holiday pre-fixe experience. The protein quality and presentation did not match the premium price point. Some dishes tasted average rather than signature or chef-driven. It felt more like scaled-down versions of regular items instead of thoughtfully designed Valentine’s specials. The only standout course was the dessert — it was well balanced, nicely presented, and genuinely enjoyable. Unfortunately, one good dessert is not enough to justify the full cost of the experience.
I went for the Valentine’s Day special dinner ($125 is not worth it for the quality) and was honestly a little disappointed with the quality of the 3-course menu compared to their regular menu. I have been come here for 4 years, so I know their usual standards and how good their food can be. That’s why I had high expectations for a special occasion like Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, the courses felt rushed and not as well-prepared as their normal dishes. The presentation was nice, but the taste and overall quality didn’t match what I’ve experienced here in the past. I truly hope this was just a one-time issue due to the holiday rush. This place has always been known for great quality of food, and service, and I’d love to see them keep that reputation.
I’m extremely disappointed with my experience here on Valentine’s Day. My girlfriend and I came in for lunch and were treated in a way that felt racially discriminatory. Several waiters walked past us, avoided eye contact, and made no effort to take our order, even while serving people who arrived after us. It was humiliating and unacceptable. The only person who showed any professionalism was the bartender, who stopped what he was doing and took our order when no one else would. After that, a server came over and apologized and offered a complimentary dish and dessert. While I appreciate the apology, it doesn’t erase how we were treated in the first place. No one should have to feel ignored or singled out just to get basic service. Restaurants should be places where everyone feels welcome. What we experienced was the opposite. Management seriously needs to address how customers are treated, because this was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had.
I rarely write poor reviews on restaurants but this was by far one of the poorest experiences I’ve had in a restaurant in a long time. Recently ate here with my family of four and had several negative experiences throughout the dining experience. To start off we entered at 11:27 on a Sunday and were asked to wait outside until 11:30 to be seated. Our server was highly unqualified and from the start was having to be reminded to serve our table. Throughout the meal while we were being served the dishes were frequently almost spilled and dropped on us. My mom’s glass was almost completely overfilled to the point where she had to ask for a straw to even pick up her glass. Then while our main course was delivered the waitress then spilled water all over me. She barely apologized and simply threw napkins on the table to try to make things better. To make things even better the manager didn’t even show face the entirety of the dining experience. At the end of the meal we were then charged a surcharge for the meal on a bill over $300. When we asked the server what that charge was for, she simply said don’t worry about it. As a paying customer that is absurd to say. Not to mention nothing was comped for the incident from the server spilling water all over the guests with little apology. We have been coming to this restaurant for years and this was by far the worst experience we have had at a restaurant in a long time in Houston. The food is amazing but the management is subpar and desperately needs to be corrected, would hate to see such a great restaurant drop the bar so much.
